Dawsons Music’s AMD Athlon 64-based music computers offer performance comparable to the very fastest Pentium 4 CPUs, and are ready to take advantage of 64-bit software when it becomes available.

With eight shops in the UK’s North West plus a dedicated education department, Dawsons Music are the one of the largest retailers in the UK, and sell both Macs and their own bespoke build of music PCs. Dawsons have been selling entry-level Athlon-based systems starting at around £550 for some time, as well as more expensive systems starting at £680 using Intel Pentium 4 processors. For this review, however, they supplied a rather more exotic AMD machine featuring an Athlon 64 3700+ (Clawhammer) processor, 2GB of RAM, two 120GB SATA hard drives, DVD-ROM drive and DVD burner for a total price of £1279. (The Athlon 64 3700+ model has only been available since August 2004, and as one of the fastest AMD models available, is still expensive at over £300, so for the more budget-conscious, Dawsons can build you exactly the same system but with a 3500+ processor for £999.)

The most striking visual feature of this system is its Suntek 7104H ‘EZ Cool’ Alpine Silver case, with its Apple G5-inspired styling. The case incorporates two strong carrying handles at the top, and includes fitted CD covers to hide the drives and complete the ‘all-metal’ look, while perforated top and side panels help let internal heat out. This case doesn’t have a PSU fitted as standard, so Dawsons had installed a 425-Watt quiet model from Hiper with thermostatically controlled fans. Most of Dawsons’ PCs are fitted with quiet CPU coolers, but the Athlon 64 3700+ on this one had been left with its standard heatsink/fan assembly to take advantage of AMD’s Cool & Quiet technology (more on this later), although this feature was initially disabled in the BIOS.The Asus motherboard provides five PCI slots, as well as the usual connectivity.Photo: Mark Ewing

Inside, the wiring was a model of neatness, and the various cables connected to the Asus K8N-E motherboard had all been dressed and clipped to various points on the chassis for long-term reliability, as well as having the various plugs retained with blobs of silicon to avoid them working free by accident during any journeys. Two sticks of high-quality Corsair RAM had been fitted for a total of 2GB of system memory, and the twin Seagate Barracuda 120GB drives for system and audio duties had been fitted in Silentdrive sleeves to minimise their noise contribution. The top CD bay had been fitted with a 16x speed DVD-ROM drive for reading duties, while the second CD bay held a Pioneer DVR108 DVD burner — the first to offer 16x speeds for both DVD+/-R and 4x speeds on double-layer media for up to 8.5GB of storage, and generally considered one of the best on the market for its wide media compatibility.

Dawsons had fitted a versatile Multimedia drive in one of the two 3.5-inch drive bays, supporting seven memory-card formats, although unlike the similar drive fitted to Inta Audio’s Opteron PC, this one doesn’t provide a slot for floppy disks. I doubt that this will worry many people, and Dawsons are happy to fit a standard floppy drive on request.

On the visual side, the Asus graphics card used an nVIDIA GeForce FX5200 chip with passive (non-fan) cooling. This is more than adequate for a musician’s PC, providing dual-head support and VGA, S-video and DVI ports. Of the five available PCI slots, only two were filled, one with an 0404 soundcard from Emu, and the other by a Firewire card that offered three extra IEEE 1394 ports on the back panel to supplement the one offered by the motherboard.

The supplied Microsoft Wireless Comfort keyboard is the largest I’ve ever used, so make sure you have plenty of desk space if you specify this model for your system. It features three clusters of extra keys, including transport controls and a ‘zoom’ slider, but although these are compatible with most Adobe, Corel and Microsoft applications, as usual they stubbornly refused to work with Cubase, which is a great shame. The associated mouse also incorporates a very handy ’tilt’ function into its scroll wheel, so you can scroll sideways as well as up and down, but once again this didn’t work with Cubase.

For this particular system:

  • LG Flatron L1730P LCD, black/silver, with 17-inch diagonal, 1280 x 1024 native resolution, and Pivot Pro dynamic rotation between portrait and landscape formats.
  • Audio interface: Emu 0404 with version 1.50 drivers.
  • Music software: Steinberg Cubase SX 3.0.

A quick peek in the BIOS showed that most of the normal tweaks had been applied, disabling such unwanted motherboard features as Instant Music, Game and MIDI ports, Smart Q-Fan, and RAID support. However, I was surprised to see that the DVD-RW and DVD drives had been connected as Secondary Master and Slave respectively, with the two SATA drives as Third and Fourth IDE Masters — while this lets you attach them both to a single IDE cable, it would seem more sensible to instead have them as Primary Master and Secondary Master.

On switching on, almost the only sound I could hear was that of the standard AMD fan/heatsink fitted to the CPU, which was running flat out at 3200rpm. Dawsons had fitted this largely so they could try out AMD’s Cool & Quiet Technology, which only works with this heatsink and fan assembly, but are happy to fit a Zalman cooler if customers prefer. I suspect this would be a much quieter option; even after running Prime95 ‘s Torture Test the CPU temperature only rose to 50 degrees Centigrade, suggesting that a much slower fan would still provide sufficient cooling.

Subsequently I enabled the Cool & Quiet function in the BIOS, installing the appropriate motherboard drivers and Windows utility, but while the CPU speed ramped smoothly up and down from 1GHz to 2.4GHz on demand, the CPU fan never budged from its maximum speed, and was thus no quieter. However, the alternative approach of enabling the Asus Q-Fan function in the BIOS was more fruitful, and let me reduce CPU fan noise almost to inaudibility.

Unfortunately, the two thermostatically controlled fans in the PSU made significantly more noise once the system had warmed up, drowning out the CPU fan. However, the PSU had a four-position fan switch on the PC’s back panel, and once I’d changed it from the Automatic temperature-controlled position (as shipped) to permanently Low it was considerably quieter and continued to cool the system perfectly adequately, although if it meets its manufacturer’s stated 18dB specification I’ll eat my hat!

I must admit to being slightly disappointed with the acoustic noise of this system, and although it wouldn’t cause problems for those running software studios, it might if you wanted to record with microphones in the same room. However, Dawsons could easily reduce noise levels by fitting a different PSU, and were already sourcing quieter alternatives when I later spoke to them. They are now also offering three further system-silencing options: the Standard pack offers acoustic foam lining and a Zalman CPU cooler for an extra £59.99, the Pro pack has more advanced foam options and includes hard drive enclosures for £99.99, while you can also have a fanless PSU fitted for an extra £139.99. Since this system already has low CPU temperatures, it therefore has the potential to be as quiet if not quieter than anything I’ve reviewed to date.

AMD processors have long proved popular with musicians with DIY PC skills, but many specialist music PC builders have avoided them because of possible incompatibilities between the associated chip sets and audio hardware. This situation seems to be changing (even previously staunch Intel supporters Carillon are now offering AMD Opteron systems), although I still do occasionally come across mentions of incompatibilities.

Like AMD’s Opteron range, the Athlon 64 range can either run in 32-bit mode (for ‘legacy’ or compatibility purposes) or in true 64-bit mode. Windows XP and all your existing 32-bit software should therefore run quite happily now, but you won’t get any of the extra speed benefits of 64-bit addressing until a 64-bit operating system and applications are released, along with 64-bit drivers for all your hardware devices. Although Microsoft have released an evaluation version of their forthcoming Windows XP 64-Bit Edition operating system, and some companies such as M Audio have already developed 64-bit drivers, there’s little practical benefit in having a 64-bit-capable processor until XP 64-Bit Edition’s commercial release, which is currently projected for late 2005.

Just to confuse matters still further, AMD have recently introduced a new range of Athlon 64 processors using the Socket 939 format (939 pins rather than the 754 of the model used in this system). It seems to be generally accepted that the 754-pin version provides equally good performance as the newer 939 format for the same clock speed, as well as being cheaper, which I suspect is why Dawsons chose it for this system. Unfortunately, the latest 3800+ and 4000+ versions of the Athlon 64 have only been made available in Socket 939 format, which suggests that the Socket 754 format may be nearing the end of its useful upgrade potential. So, just as Intel customers must currently choose between the Northwood or Prescott ranges, potential AMD Athlon 64 customers must also make the same choice between lower price and possible greater system longevity.

All the usual Windows tweaks had been applied to this system, and I could find nothing to complain about at all in this department. I was also very impressed by the clarity and brightness of the Flatron monitor when set to its native resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels and using the DVI connection, and especially with its ability to rotate the picture by 90, 180 or 270 degrees.

The two 120GB hard drives had been NTFS formatted, with the first split into a 24GB System partition and an 87GB Slave partition for backups and the like, and the other left as a single 112GB volume for audio storage. Dskbench measured 56MB/second sustained transfer rates for both read and write, just like every other system I’ve tested containing Seagate Barracuda SATA drives. Meanwhile, the Multimedia drive showed up inside Explorer as four separate Removable Disk entries labelled CF, SM, SD and MS, denoting the various card formats on offer.With plug-in and soft-synth performance roughly equal to that of a Prescott 3.2GHz PC, this Athlon 64 3700 system is surprisingly cost-effective.

I performed my usual raft of Sisoftware Sandra tests, the CPU Arithmetic Dhrystone and Whetstone measuring 10939 MIPS and 3949 MFLOPS respectively, while the CPU Multimedia results were 22930 it/second and 24753 it/second for integer and floating point. I include these for completeness, since each test result varies so much (some higher, and some lower) from the same test with other processor types such as the Northwood, Opteron and Prescott that it’s difficult to draw obvious conclusions.

I was, however, surprised by the Athlon 64 memory bandwidth figure — 2. 6GB/second was considerably lower than I expected, although I subsequently confirmed that this was in the right ballpark from some other Athlon 64 3700+ system reviews. It is more comparable to Intel Xeon systems at around 3GB/second than P4 or AMD Opteron systems, which achieve about 4.6GB/second and 5.3GB/second respectively.

Of course, benchmark results, while useful, are no substitute for trying out real-world software, so my tests were mainly focused on comparing the performance of the AMD Athlon 64 processor to that of Intel’s Pentium 4 range when running my usual Cubase SX Fivetowers song to measure plug-in and soft synth overheads.

At 20ms latency, the CPU overhead was identical with that of the Philip Rees Prescott 3.2GHz system I reviewed in SOS January 2005, which is extremely impressive for a processor with a 2.4GHz clock speed! At 4ms the results were also very close to the Prescott system, and by extrapolating the fastest Intel Northwood I’ve measured (the 3.4GHz Carillon system I reviewed in SOS September 2004) I calculate that on this music test at least, the AMD Athlon 64 3700+ would provide performance roughly equivalent to a 3. 7GHz Northwood processor, if we could buy one.

So, I can finally agree with all those musicians who have already extolled the virtues of the Athlon 64 range — it seems you really can equate AMD’s model number (in this case 3700+) with an Intel P4 Northwood processor of roughly similar clock speed, even when running audio applications. What’s more, performance should further improve once Microsoft finally release the 64-bit version of Windows XP (see box).

You can order Dawsons computers on-line using the web-site PC builder to assemble your own choice of components, or by phone to one of the Dawsons shops. They offer a 12-month guarantee on their PC systems, and during the first three months this also includes all handling charges to and from the workshops should it need to be returned to base. During the latter nine months the customer has to pay to send the system back, although Dawsons will still cover the return courier cost. After this initial 12-month period, they offer a free health check, and are still happy to provide customer advice and any other information that proves necessary.

First-line support is via the Hi-tech departments of their many stores, and if there are any problems that can’t be resolved by telephone support, their repair system provides second-line support direct to the dedicated computer department within 24 hours. They say that repairs are typically carried out and sent back on the same day.

In recent months I’ve been lucky enough to have three radically different PC systems for review, and the results have been fascinating. Inta Audio’s AMD Opteron 146 system was extremely quiet, and its 2.0GHz processor offered plug-in and soft-synth performance roughly equivalent to a Pentium 4C 3.2GHz processor, while the Phil Rees Prescott 3.2GHz Pentium 4 defied expectations by being even quieter and turning in results closer to a P4C 3.4GHz processor, showing that the Prescott is better than many people have claimed, although more expensive to keep cool quietly.

However, this Dawsons Athlon 64 3700+ system with its 2.4GHz processor held its own in my tests with the 3. 2GHz Prescott despite being considerably cheaper. Part of the reason for its lower price is reflected in the higher level of acoustic noise, but the Athlon 64 seems to be so easy to cool that it wouldn’t be difficult to significantly drop the noise level by using a different power supply and one of Dawsons’ silencing packs, which wouldn’t bump up the price significantly.

With plug-in and soft-synth performance for the Athlon 64 3700+ proving roughly equivalent to a P4C 3.7GHz processor, it really makes you question whether paying extra for any Intel Prescott system is worthwhile. Judging by various conversations I’ve had with specialist music PC builders over the last few months, there do seem to be a few remaining compatibility and reliability concerns with the Athlon 64 range when used with some audio interfaces, but I didn’t experience any problems with this system during the review period, and lots of musicians are using such systems in the field with similar success.

Overall I have to give this Dawsons Athlon 64 system a definite thumbs-up, although personally I’d forego the fashionable case in favour of a quieter one with a better power supply, and be prepared to pay a little extra — after all, it’s very good value for money to start with!

With the recent introduction of Socket 939 for the Athlon 64, the 3700+ is rumoured to be the last of the Socket 754 processors, but only time and AMD can tell if this really is the case. But let’s take a closer look at the 3700+ and what Mesh has on offer with its Matrix 64 3700+ Pro system.


On top of the 2.45GHz Athlon 64 3700+ processor Mesh has fitted a Radeon X800 Pro and has managed to create one fast PC that will laugh at any application you try to run on it. But high performance has always come at a cost and the Mesh Matrix64 3700+ Pro doesn’t come cheap at £1,807.16 including VAT and delivery. That said, Mesh is giving you a lot of PC for your money.


The motherboard is from Asus and is the top notch K8V Deluxe that comes with integrated Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire, S-ATA and IDE RAID to mention just a few features. Add a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum sound card, a set of Creative Labs Inspire 7700 7.1-channel speakers and things start to look very good indeed.


It doesn’t stop here though as Mesh has really pulled out all the stops and fitted 1GB of PC3200 DDR SDRAM, a 250GB Maxtor S-ATA hard drive, an eight-speed Sony DVD writer and a Sony 52-speed CD-RW drive. If that doesn’t add up to a fully loaded PC I don’t know what does.


Add to this a 19in ViewSonic VG910b TFT display with DVI input and you’ve got yourself a top of the range system. It’s a shame though that the ViewSonic display only supports a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 as it does limit your gaming resolution and doesn’t show off the Radeon X800 Pro card to its full potential. That said, you will be able to turn pretty much all the features on in a game and still get a decent frame rate.


A cordless keyboard and optical mouse from Logitech makes up the input peripheral package, while you also get a 56k V.90 PCI modem and a copy of Microsoft Works Suite 2004. The latter is a good inclusion since it features a full version of Microsoft Word – undoubtedly the most useful part of Microsoft Office. Mesh includes a three-year on-site parts and labour warranty in the price, which should provide a good degree of piece of mind.


If I were to complain about something, it would have to be the noisy CPU cooler. This is a real shame as the PSU and the rear 120mm fan produce far less noise. With a better CPU cooler the Mesh Matrix64 3700+ Pro would have been a very quiet PC, but with the current cooler it is too loud for comfortable use at home. The thick Mesh case does however block some of the noise produced, but even so, a modest investment in a better CPU cooler would have made this machine as quiet as it is fast.


The 360W power supply should easily cope with the components fitted, but it is getting to the stage where anything less than 400W is under powered. This is something worth considering for future upgrades. Although to be fair, you’re not likely to need to upgrade this machine for some time.

With its range of high quality components a PC such as this should deliver stunning benchmark results and I can’t deny that I was very impressed with the numbers produced by this Mesh. The Matrix64 3700+ Pro scored 196 in SYSmark 2004 which makes this the fastest PC we have ever tested.


Graphics performance was equally impressive, with a 3DMark03 score of 10,023; this is the first PC that we have ever looked at to break the 10,000 mark. You will however notice that the graphics score is missing from the PCMark 2004 graphs, but this seems to be an issue with PCMark not recognising the graphics card properly. Similarly high scores are seen across the board in all of the other 3D benchmarks and if you’re an avid gamer you’ll be very happy with the Mesh Matrix64 3700+ Pro.


The Athlon 64 3700+ shows that there is definitely some life left in the Socket 754 platform, even if this is the last CPU to make use of it. Looking at the SYSmark 2004 score, the Matrix64 3700+ Pro managed to beat the 3800+ and the FX-53 we looked at a few days ago, but these where tested on a pre-production motherboard with an IDE hard drive and a different graphics card, all of which will have an impact on the SYSmark score. But it’s also worth remembering that the 3700+ is clocked slightly faster than both those chips.


It is great to see that the new ATI Radeon X800 Pro cards are finally staring to filter through into the retail channel and that the performance is as good as our initial testing of the reference card showed. Of course the latest generation of graphics cards thrive on a fast CPU, so it’s not surprising that this Mesh produced great 3D results.


Mesh has put together a well built system with a plethora of features that showcases the latest Athlon 64 processor and ATI graphics card. It is however quite pricey, but for anyone looking for an extremely fast PC with top notch graphics, this could be the one to go for.

The Mesh Matrix64 3700+ Pro offers cutting edge hardware, great performance and a correspondingly high price tag. But even though it’s expensive, you’d be hard pushed to find a faster system for the money.

The Athlon 64 3700+ was released as a model of AMD’s desktop CPU series, using the Clawhammer microarchitecture at its core. It began to appear in component stores in January 2001.

Chipset models

                  Socket 754 the most powerful processor

It is very important that the decrease in the clock frequency was very small, and the cache memory of the second tier was somewhat reduced. At the same time, performance decreased quite a bit (you can only notice this in the most demanding applications and in special tests). But the temperature reached by the processor during operation dropped noticeably.

                  Socket 754 processors belonged to one of two families. The youngest of them was Septron. These chips have replaced the Duron line of CPUs. This renaming was due to marketing considerations. Celeron CPUs were the direct competitor of this family of chips. Here, for consonance with him, this renaming was carried out.

                  The most productive microprocessors in this case were Athlon 64 chips. The key differences in this case were increased frequencies and an increased L2 cache size. It was the combination of these two factors that made it possible to significantly increase the speed of such a computing system.

                  Budget CPUs

                  As previously noted, the Septron family of chips were socket 754 budget processors. They had a reduced L2 cache size. Earlier devices had 128 Kb and were manufactured according to the 130 micron technology, and the CPUs released at the testamentary stage of development of this platform were already equipped with 256 Kb and were produced using technology 90 nm. The minimum clock frequency of such microprocessors was 1600 MHz, and the highest — 2000 MHz. At the same time, for all chips, without exception, the thermal package was 62 W, ​​and the maximum temperature was 70 0C.

                  The most optimal use of such CPUs was as part of office personal computers. Such computing systems solved the simplest tasks, and in this case, the final cost of a PC came to the fore. Due to the use of cheaper components, this issue was resolved very successfully.

                  Premium processor models

                  Now let’s look at those chips that provided maximum performance within a computer platform such as socket 754, and which processors should have been used in this case. As in the case of Socket 462, this niche was occupied by devices from the Athlon series. Only in this case, the manufacturer added the number 64 to their name. It indicated that such a CPU supports 64-bit applications.

                  This series of devices still included one physical software processing unit. The key difference from the lower models of the CPU was the increase in the second level cache and the higher clock speed. The first wave of Athlon 64 for socket 754 was equipped with 512 KB, and the second — 1024 KB. Also, the minimum frequency of such microprocessors was 1800 MHz, and the maximum — 2400 MHz.

                  Introduction

                  Recently, the computer industry has pleased us with a huge variety of new products in the world of components. It seemed that quite recently, new DDR2 RAM standards, dual-core processors entered our lives, new platforms for these systems appeared, but progress does not stand still and quad-core processors have already been announced, for which new platforms will be developed. This naturally affected the video card market as well. Every day, leading manufacturers modify video card models, increase power, and improve cooling systems. However, not all users of personal computers can afford all these new items. What to do if you want to play modern games, but there is not enough money to buy a modern gaming computer configuration? After the emergence and distribution of the Socket 9 platform39, the old Socket 754 completely faded into the background. Many considered it a «dead end» branch. However, after the announcement of the AM2 platform, Socket 939 found itself in a similar situation. In addition, about a year ago, AMD pleased the owners of motherboards with Socket 754 with the release of AMD Athlon 64 processors based on the most modern revision of the Venice core of the E6 stepping. Therefore, we nevertheless decided to look at what the Socket 754 platform is capable of today and try to understand: is it really necessary to make hardware sellers happy with a certain amount of banknotes to buy a new computer that meets the requirements of modern games, or is it worth investing less money and breathing life into , which has already become native, the contents of the system block.

                  The fastest CPUs

                  Among budget microprocessors, Septron with an index of 3400 had the highest performance. This modification of the CPU was marked as follows — SDA3400AIO3BX. Its clock speed was 2 GHz, and the L2 cache was 256 KB. But even such advanced parameters did not allow using it as part of entry-level gaming computer systems. He had too low speed. But for the implementation of various office tasks, he was just perfect. This was the main area of ​​​​its use.

                  Well, the «maximum» socket 754 processor is the Athlon 64 marked ADA3700AEP5AR. This chip had a performance index of 3700. Its real operating frequency was 2.4 GHz. He also had a third-level cache of 1 MB. By combining these two factors, this CPU provided an uncompromisingly high level of PC performance. In this case, it was possible to run any software that was relevant at that time. Therefore, all gaming PCs of that time were most often based on it.

                  Description of processors

                  AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 754, Venice, ADA3000AKK4BX

                  , multiplier 10x. Given the good overclocking potential of this family of processors, we immediately increased the FSB frequency in the BIOS to 240 MHz, the HyperTransport bus frequency was reduced to 3, the AMD QnQ function was disabled. The system booted on the first try, the CPU-z program determined that the processor was running at a frequency of 2. 4 GHz (240×10), however, during the run of some tests, the system hung, therefore, for stable operation, the FSB frequency was reduced to 236 MHz, and further testing was carried out with a clock frequency of 2.36 GHz (236×10).

                  AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 754, Venice, ADA3000AKK4BX (OEM)

                  A counterpart of the above processor, only in OEM packaging, demonstrated similar overclocking capabilities with similar overclocking actions. A boxed cooler from a Sempron 2600+ Socket 754 processor was used as cooling.

                  AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+

                  Processors with reduced power consumption for Socket AM2 systems were announced by AMD back in mid-May. Then the company released two classes of economical processors — with a typical heat dissipation of 65 and 35 watts. These classifications are still valid today. The first group of CPUs currently includes fairly powerful dual-core processors operating at frequencies up to 2.4 GHz inclusive and having ratings of 3800+, 4200+ and 4600+. We tested Athlon 64 X2 4600+ running at 2.4 GHz and having 512 KB of cache memory. The processor was not overclocked, the processor frequency during testing remained default — 2.4 GHz.

                  The relevance of the computer platform

                  Of course, socket 754 has not been officially supported by the manufacturer for a long time. Processors for 2 cores are not particularly relevant anyway, and the computing platform in question could only process program code in one thread. At the same time, they lack the third cache level and low frequency values. Therefore, it is very problematic to cope with modern software for such a PC. And even with the least resource-intensive tasks.

                  In addition, the CPUs of this platform were manufactured according to today’s outdated technology and have a high level of power consumption. All of the previously listed factors indicate that the further operation of such system units is impractical. Therefore, this processor socket is already obsolete.

                  Socket 754 in Brief

                  Socket 754 is an AMD processor socket that was released in 2003 for desktop and laptop computers. The creation of this socket was caused by the transition from the Athlon XP processors that were released for Socket A to the more modern Athlon 64 processors. The new Athlon 64 processors used the HyperTransport bus and were equipped with an integrated memory controller, so they could not work on the old socket. Also Athlon 64 on Socket 754 became the first processors on the new 64-bit AMD64 architecture.

                  Socket 754 became a transitional socket and was quickly replaced by Socket 939, which was introduced half a year after 754. The main differences between Socket 939 and Socket 754 are a faster HyperTransport bus and support for two RAM channels (754 supports only 1 channel).

                  After the release of Socket 939, Socket 754 was used mainly only on laptops, where it remained relevant until 2006, when it was replaced by Socket S1.

                  The main chipsets based on the Socket 754 platform were VIA K8T800, nForce3, nForce4, GeForce 6100, SIS755, SIS760GX, ATI Xpress 200 and VIA K8T890.
