AMD Athlon X2 450 Review
The Athlon X2 450 is one of AMD’s entry-level Desktop processors. It was released in 2014 with 2 cores and 2 threads. With base clock at 3.5GHz, max speed at 3.9GHz, and a 65W power rating. The Athlon X2 450 is based on the Kaveri 28nm family and is part of the Athlon X2 series.
Athlon X2 450 is also the successor of AMD’s last gen Athlon X2 350 processor that was based on the Piledriver and 32nm process and was released in 2013.
AMD’s Steamroller series has landed, upping the ante with Intel in its high-stakes game for desktop PC market dominance with a well-rounded lineup of new chips that push mainstream platforms to higher core counts and more raw compute than we’ve ever seen. As a result, Intel’s commanding presence in the enthusiast space is threatened in a way we haven’t seen in over a decade.
As we’ve seen, gaming remains an advantage for Intel, so if squeezing out every last frame is all you care about, Intel’s processors are a good choice. Much of that performance advantage will be less noticeable when gaming at higher resolutions, or if you pair the processors with a lesser graphics card.
We stand by that assessment, but that won’t escape us from running a few up to date benchmarks. We’ll focus on gaming performance which should make life a little easier for Intel’s CPU. For application performance you can refer back to our day-one coverage of the Core i3-4370 where the Athlon X2 350 was included. You can safely bet the 2.5% factory overclock isn’t going to make the Athlon X2 450 any more than about 1-2% faster than those figures.
Moving beyond games, it’s an easy win for the Core i3-4370. The Core i3 upgrade path on B85, C222, C224, C226, H81, H87, H97, Q87, Z87, Z97 motherboards, all support upcoming Haswell Refresh processors. So if you buy a nice B85, C222, C224, C226, H81, H87, H97, Q87, Z87, Z97 board now with the Core i3-4370, you’ll be able to slap a Kaveri processor on there later in the year, or whenever you deem it necessary.
The AMD Athlon X2 450 seems to be a decent performing chip that is readily available for $168.2 at your favorite retailer. The main competition for this processor is the Core i3-4370 2-Core unlocked desktop processor with Intel HD Graphics 4600 graphics ($242 shipped).
The Athlon X2 450 clocks up to 3. 9Ghz just as it promises on the box, and with AMD’s software you can take one of the cores all the way up to 4GHz. However, don’t expect to get much beyond that without seriously upgrading your cooling solution and manually tweaking voltages behind the operating system level.
That said, to squeeze out all the potential of this surprisingly potent entry-level chip, you’ll want (and need) to splurge on an enthusiast-grade A75, A78, A88X motherboard.
AMD arms Athlon X2 450 with a 3.5 GHz base frequency that jumps as high as 3.9 GHz under lightly-threaded tasks. The Athlon X2 450 also offers a 3.5 GHz clock rate with all cores active. Meanwhile, Intel keeps its Core i3-4370 operating at a static 3.8 GHz clock rate.
Below is a comparison of all graphics cards average FPS performance (using an average of 80+ games at ultra quality settings), combined with the AMD Athlon X2 450.
