We got acquainted with the general capabilities of the Socket AM3 platform and its representatives in the previous article. Here we immediately introduce the hero of this test — the Athlon II X4 605e processor, and thank the Megabyte store for it.

This is almost the weakest representative of the Athlon II X4 600 series (the other one was not quickly found, so suffer so much). It is based on the Propus core, which was obtained from Deneb by disabling the L3 cache. The chip has 4 full-fledged cores in 4 threads with a base frequency of 2300 MHz. The L2 cache is 512 KB per core.

The built-in RAM controller supports dual-channel DDR2-1066 or DDR3-1333 modules. And the letter «e» in the name indicates a TDP indicator reduced to 45 W.

Now let’s introduce our test stand. It is based on the top board ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer with support for fast memory, a gaming LAN controller and a flagship audio codec.

A pair of its DIMM slots is occupied by a 16-gig 9 series kit0007 G.Skill TridentX . In nominal terms, it worked at a frequency of 1333 MHz with timings of 9-9-9-24.

The processor was saved from overheating by a 2-section dropsy Cougar AQUA 240 with a bright LED backlight of the water block. To set the illumination mode, you can use the included remote control or synchronize it with popular technologies from ASUS, ASRock, GIGABYTE and MSI. In games, the processor temperature did not exceed 30 ° C.

Operating system, benchmarks, games and all other necessary programs fit on a couple of terabyte SSD PATRIOT P200 .

This is a processor test, not an assembly, so the video card was taken with a margin so that it would not become a bottleneck. We are talking about the Palit GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER GameRock with reference frequencies, a 12-phase power subsystem and an almost 3-slot cooler.

Our CPU is energy efficient, but the video card is gluttonous. But the «platinum» Seasonic FOCUS PX-650 did not experience any problems when servicing this system. On the contrary, at this level of load, its efficiency was near the maximum values. It also boasts smaller deviations on the main lines: ±3% instead of the standard ±5%.

Full Tower case RIOTORO CR1288TG remained with us from previous tests. Its exterior is decorated with RGB lighting, which can be configured using the buttons on the top panel. Near them nestled a pair of USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 and two 3.5 mm audio jacks.

Monitor Philips Brilliance 329P9H helped with displaying the image. And an external system with AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K 9 coped with recording gameplay without loss of performance0008 .

In modern realities, the Athlon II X4 605e must be overclocked, but there are problems with this. In 2010, we managed to raise the system bus frequency of this processor from 200 to 239 MHz without increasing the voltages. And after raising them, the bar was submitted to 315 MHz for the system bus and 3620 MHz for CPU cores.

However, now not every motherboard is capable of such a result, because 10 years have passed and the element base has noticeably worn out. For example, the test ASRock Fatal1ty 9The 90FX Killer loses stability at 270 MHz for the system bus. We tried, but we couldn’t go beyond those limits. As a result, the core frequency almost reached 3100 MHz.

Along the way, we accelerated the RAM to DDR3-1435 MHz and improved its timings. But it was not possible to unlock additional cores.

In this mode, the system passed the AIDA64 stress test without unnecessary noise and throttling. The speed of the LSS fans did not exceed 1200 rpm, and the processor temperature reached an incredible 35 ° C.

After that, several synthetic benchmarks were launched. Working with RAM in AIDA64 accelerated by a maximum of 15%, and access latency decreased by 17%.

In the CPU-Z , overclocking increased results by 37%. This made it possible to outperform the Core 2 Duo E8500 in multi-threaded mode, but in single-threaded mode, the Intel representative remained out of competition.

In CineBench R15 , the overclocking bonus did not exceed 33%. And if the nominal AMD Athlon II X4 605e was in the company of the mobile Intel Core i5-3317U, then after overclocking it is kept in the tail of the AMD A10-7800.

And here’s how the situation develops with gaming benchmarks. In World of Tanks EnCore RT , the maximum increase was 34%, and thanks to overclocking, the gameplay will be a little more comfortable.
