Test and Review: AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition — New Generation of Drivers

In early November, AMD announced its intention to rename the Catalyst drivers to Radeon Software. In addition, a special Crimson Edition was introduced this year. Of course, a direct association with last year’s Omega drivers cannot be avoided, but the Crimson Edition is focused not only on improving performance and adding new features. A central role in driver development was played by the «reformatted» unit of the Radeon Technologies Group led by Raja Koduri over the summer. The new drivers lift the veil of mystery about the upcoming changes in the field of visualization and the gaming industry under the influence of DirectX 12 and virtual reality. Whether or not AMD succeeds with this strategy, we’ll see next year. But the first consequences can already be assessed just by the new Radeon Software Crimson Edition drivers.

First, a few words about the name: Crimson is translated from English as «raspberry». AMD and ATI have always been associated with red, so this name is hardly a surprise. However, with the same success, AMD could choose the next letter of the Greek alphabet. Perhaps next year, AMD will choose another shade for the new version of the Radeon Software drivers. AMD plans to release up to six versions of Crimson Edition WHQL drivers, and AMD will continue to release beta drivers for new games. How often they will appear and how timely is another question. The stability of the Crimson Edition is yet to be tested.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition

In recent days, we have been able to test Crimson Edition in detail. We were able to do the same job as with the other drivers before. We ran some tests and also checked a number of settings. Here I would like to note that AMD developed the Crimson Edition from scratch based on Qt. The driver shell now starts faster, submenus also work more smoothly. However, AMD delays shell startup by up to five minutes under Windows so that it doesn’t block other startup routines. In any case, the program starts much faster than before. The procedure for uninstalling the driver has also been improved, which removes all components without leaving «ballast» in the system.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition

The first two screenshots clearly show the interface changes. AMD has completely said goodbye to the old design, now the menus look flat, the structure has also been changed so that the necessary functions can be reached faster. For gamers, most likely the most important will be the settings for various filters and effects. They can be set globally or individually for each game. To do this, the Crimson Edition driver wrapper scans hard drives for games. Games, by the way, can be launched directly by selecting them in the shell.

In addition to quality settings, overclocking settings can also be saved in profiles. You can also create multiple profiles for one game, then you can choose the one you need.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition

In addition to the usual image quality and filtering settings, Frame Rate Target Control (FRTC) can be adjusted. With FRTC you can set the maximum frame rate for the game. Of course, the function is only interesting if the game gives more fps than required. The purpose of the technology lies in energy saving. FRTC works not only in the game itself, but also in the menus and loading screens, when the video card can deliver several hundred frames per second. The same applies to watching movies, since more than 60 fps is not required here. In our Radeon R9 reviewFury X, we have already presented the test results and estimated the potential energy savings.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition

OverDrive support has also changed significantly. Here you can set the GPU clock speed, as well as configure power consumption, temperature and fan speed limits. You can either adjust the sliders directly or rearrange the point on the graph in the upper right. Also, overclocking can be set both globally and separately for certain games.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition

Depending on the gamer’s habits, the difference between global and individual profiles may or may not matter. It seems to us that selective application is important for features such as Frame Rate Target Control. For less demanding games, FRTC can be enabled, but for everyone else we would disable it. The same goes for overclocking. For games with high demands, overclocking can be activated to get the most out of the graphics card. For less demanding games, overclocking is not needed at all.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition

For most users, Crimson Edition’s video and display settings will no longer be as interesting. You can set up color and rendering profiles or video filters. Demos are available to help you evaluate the effect of the setting on your footage. The display options are important for those users who plan to take advantage of Virtual Super Resolution. The user now has full access to resolution settings, timings and refresh rates and can change them (regardless of the default system modes). Previously, this could only be done on FirePro graphics cards.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition

In the display settings, we found in some places the heritage of the AMD Catalyst driver, which consists in the old interface design and slowdowns. According to AMD, the corresponding options are gradually being redesigned for the Crimson Edition, so that fragments of the old Catalyst will disappear over time. So far, we haven’t been able to test the Eyefinity settings, which are important for a multi-monitor setup.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition

The last important tab in Crimson Edition is system information. All basic information about the installed software and hardware is displayed here. The tab will be especially useful in the case of FreeSync monitors, as it allows you to find out if the technology is working. Previously, this information had to be looked up in the monitor’s documentation.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition

Displays detailed graphics card information. Individual tile values can be copied to the clipboard. They can be easily transferred, for example, to a messenger. All this clarifies the situation in the case of confusing driver versions.

Additional options are available in the driver settings regarding displaying the driver shell window or adding advertisements. You can also undo any setting you have made.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition

Alerts can be used to report any problems or incorrect options to the user. Radeon Software Crimson Edition keeps itself up to date and updates are installed automatically.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition

Finally, note the new icon that is displayed on the taskbar or appears on the right click on the desktop. Through the taskbar, you can not only launch the Crimson Edition shell, but also activate global profiles without starting the shell.

in short, my personal review of this program, the program is complete go * but, I installed it in the hope that there would be at least some increase in fps, but the increase was in fps 10 but there is one thing, but, the next day after the launch of the metro 2033 redux game, complete slag began, the bodies of the characters were missing in the game, there were also no weapons visible, i. e. an empty model of hands and nothing in it, the fps was 15, although the last day it was 60 fps, after restarting windows, he began to write that the video driver was completely absent, which is why I had to return to catalyst version 15. my opinion about this program is very bad, since it is still very raw and they are not even going to fix it, it’s better to wait a while optimization, I’m sorry for the mistakes already very boiled.

Okay, let’s try it in a moment. No matter how the Khrustmaster’s joystick flew off it, otherwise it uses a virtual mouse and keyboard, and here AMD somehow «speeds up» it all.

Everything is in order — the joy has not fallen off, the firewood is super! Again I began to see through the muddy plexus in BzS (Battle of Stalingrad) as it was in W7 before switching to the top ten. True, with the vertical update (synchronization) turned on, the twitching returned (it had to be turned off), but this is a distinctive feature of the BzS «engine» and will pass by itself in future firewood, from experience. Well, or I’ll find a cure myself, also from experience. 🙂
