Was having some last moment doubts about the 3700x that I was gonna buy (was thinking of upgrading to the 3900x), and looked again at the whole lineup. What I found out is very interesting…

Every single processor in the Ryzen 3000 series uses the exact same physical hardware (chip design). They are all cut out from the exact same «AMD Zen2» CPU core chip wafer in the factory. They just bin (sort) the Zen2 cores differently in the factory based on their factory overclock potential, and then assign how many cores are gonna go inside each CPU, and how much cache they’ll put inside the CPU, etc. Sure, this isn’t surprising to anyone. Intel does the same. But it’s still good to be reminded of this sometimes.

So basically, they are all the same, just that the «easiest overclockers» got factory-sorted into the higher-priced CPUs, and got a higher overclock by default. But, as GamersNexus points out: The binning doesn’t *really* matter. The entire Ryzen 3000 series all overclock «about the same» (about as well as each other). He mentions in several videos that every Ryzen 3000 series overclocks to exactly 4.3 GHz at all-core full load. Literally all of them no matter which one it is! Since they are all the same chip and because the Zen2 architecture is remarkably consistent in quality of all chips.

Here’s the thing… I was watching Gamers Nexus (easily the most advanced, nerdy, in-depth, most amazing tech reviewer out there), and he was showing several things in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAGQwWDyURI

This is what he very clearly and elegantly demonstrated:

  • All tests were done with both stock and several variants of overclocking for every CPU.

  • 3800x does not need to exist at all. It’s a 3700x with a slight +100MHz-ish extra factory overclock, but when you overclock them both manually their performance match up perfectly. It’s literally the exact same CPU for a slightly higher price.

  • 3600 overclocked gives «basically» the exact same game framerates (including «1% low FPS») as the 3700x, 3800x and 3900x (also all overclocked). There’s almost no difference whatsoever in games.

  • The only ones worth considering are 3600, 3700x and 3900x.

  • The 3600 is for all types of gaming and pretty much all general desktop use. Photo editing, video editing with GPU-accelerated rendering, etc. Including music producers who can run massive 200/300-plugin projects on this with absolutely zero issue at all (he didn’t mention that, but I’m a producer and looking at the geekbench scores compared to my existing setup, I can tell you that the 3600 is a total beast for music producers; audio plugins are nowhere near as heavy as other kinds of creative computer tasks such as video editing).

  • The 3700x is for people who often do very CPU-heavy tasks that apply a 100% load to all cores, and want to save time while doing those tasks. For example: Video rendering with software-effects. Blender 3D rendering. Multiple virtual machines at the same time. To a certain extent it’s also decent for music producers who just want those two extra cores (8 instead of 6 cores) for whatever reason, but you really don’t need it (you would be hard-pressed to ever max out a 3600 for music production). The bottom line is… the 3700x is the best value «heavy multicore» processor. But few people will use it to its actual potential. Regular desktop users can shave off a few seconds on certain heavy things like unzipping etc (compared to a Ryzen 3600), or maybe even save a minute in a 14-minute heavy CPU task, but overall, those «heavy CPU» performance gains simply aren’t going to be even noticed by regular people. Especially not by gamers. And how often do you unzip files anyway? And can you wait a few seconds extra or maybe a minute extra during a 15 minute unzipping? Then a 3600 is all you need. You need to be heavily CPU-bound to need the 3700x CPU at all. He does not recommend buying it unless you do one of the kinds of tasks that I just described.

  • The 3900x is «the beast». 12 cores. Totally overkill for gaming (yet again, its FPS results are almost the same as a 3600). This is for the market of people who know WHY they want 12 cores. It’s for people who do video production with heavy accelerated effects. It’s for content producers/editing machines that need to crank out tons of videos very rapidly for big YouTube channels. It’s for people who run insane amounts of RAM (64 GB, 96 GB, or 128 GB) and tons of virtual machines all at once. It’s for people who render 3D movies/photos for a living. It’s for… the biggest of the biggest power users. For everyone else it’s basically a totally «meh, so what, it let me unzip the zip file unnoticeably faster compared to my 3600… oh and look, the game framerates are like 2-5 FPS higher than my 3600 which is already in the 160 FPS range for [insert example game here]».

Something else to keep in mind is that the 3900x has a 105 watt power draw. That’s almost twice of what all the other CPUs on the list use. So you need a much heavier CPU cooler because every watt generates CPU heat. And you need a beefier power supply. And you use more electricity. It’s just absolutely mental to put a 3900x in a general gaming machine (no offense to anyone who did that). It’s a workstation/content production CPU and almost nobody needs it.

I know that many gamers pick the 3700x by default since it is still known as a good mid-range CPU for a valuable price with 8 cores, etc. And that’s fine. But it *is* a bit overkill. The 3600 overclocked is basically identical to the 3700x overclocked, in games, as mentioned.

To make matters even more interesting…

  • A Ryzen 3700x + a RTX 2070 Super costs the same as a Ryzen 3600 + a RTX 2080 Super. This will give a lot more FPS increase than the CPU would. There may be a very slight extra cost, but they are roughly the same price, here in Sweden (I compare prices of the cards using only the quality brands of RTX graphics cards). Roughly the same can be expected elsewhere in the world too. (Except in regions with really infamously messed up prices, such as Australia, of course… Ay mates, I can’t imagine how rough it is there…)

  • Or use the saved money by getting a Ryzen 3600 + a RTX 2070 Super and spend it on upgrading another component such as PSU, case, RAM, SSD quality, etc.

  • Then of course we shouldn’t forget that AMD is releasing the RDNA 2 (aka «Navi 2X», and formerly known as «Big Navi») desktop graphics cards in late 2020, the same graphics chips that power the Xbox Series X and Playstation 5. But they will probably rival a 2080 Super in price, and heck if you have a 2080 Super today, you can sell it (to nVidia lovers) on the Navi launch day and still make a good chunk of money back since it’s the top of the line «pro-sumer» (non-T.I.) card.

  • Another very big consideration is the fact that 2020 is the final year of AMD’s AM4 socket. In late 2020 they will release the Ryzen 4000 CPUs that will use an enhanced process and most likely give 20% increased performance-per-watt (same as their new Ryzen 4000 mobile CPUs). It’s very likely that the entry-level Ryzen 4000 processor will beat most of the Ryzen 3000 CPUs, apart from «high core count beasts» such as the 3900x. But in 2021 they’re launching an entirely new socket, the AM5 with the Ryzen 5000 series, which will include things such as USB4 support and DDR5 memory. So it doesn’t make sense to «max out» an AM4 right now. Not considering that Ryzen 4000 is so close, and that a total replacement AM5 socket is coming next year. (Maxing out a computer right now, such as with a 3900x 12-core, mainly makes sense for people who make a living that is directly affected by how fast their CPUs can render/output the result of the thing you’re creating.)

  • So in summary, for a gamer today, right now, it makes most sense to get a Ryzen 3600, with the best GPU you can buy, and the best (overclockable) motherboard and RAM you can buy. So it’s a win-win.

It’s been an interesting and educational day, and seeing the benchmark and overclock results from the most respectable overclocker in the tech industry (he goes into so much detail that most people can’t even listen to him), just convinced me to get a Ryzen 3600 and the 2080 Super. I want to thank GamersNexus for their no-bullshit, technical approach to all of this.

Hope this summary helps someone else while we all continue to await the new Ryzen 4000, socket AM5 and AMD + nVidia graphics cards that are all on the horizon! 🙂

Most of you know choosing the best hardware for your PC is never an easy job. While spending thousands and hundreds of dollars on a single component with a diverse range of products of the same category puts the builder in a conflicted situation.

Understandingly, AMD Ryzen has done a great job by providing value to money processors, which are better at multitasking than Intel processors. Today we will talk about the three AMD Ryzen processors Ryzen 7 3700x vs Ryzen 5 3600 vs Ryzen 9 3900x. The following comparison will include price, specs, and all other necessary details for the end consumer to prefer and distinguish between these processors.

Before starting the comparison, just so you know, the basic specs of a processor include the Cores and threads. The basic function of Cores in a processor is to process the information of the task you are doing on your PC and store it in the RAM. A single core can work on a single task. To clarify, the more processor cores, the more efficient is your PC.

While on the other hand, threads help in multitasking. Basically, a thread is run on a Core of the processor. To clarify, Core handles and runs threads for the PC in order to work. With that said, a processor is only good and effective when it has a higher number of Cores and threads.
Moreover, another term used is GHz. GHz is the clock frequency. The higher the frequency, the faster will the processor work.

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 is a great processor from the AMD family. Now, these processors may be cheap compared to other processors. Still, they offer significant specifications for gamers who have a bit affordable budget. If we look into Specs, AMD Ryzen 5 3600 offers 6 CPU Cores with 12 threads for multitasking. It has a base clock of 3.6 GHz which can further be overclocked to 4.2 GHz.

Furthermore, the Ryzen 5 3600 level 1 cache is 384KB, level 2 cache of 3 MB, and level 3 cache of 32 MB. Subsequently, the Thermal Design Power it can generate is 65W due to the high-end specs this processor offers. Consequently, the maximum operating temperature to work efficiently is 95C. The operating system required by Ryzen 5 3600 is Windows 10 and 11 64bit. AMD Ryzen 5 3600 can cost up to $280.

To conclude, Ryzen 5 3600 is a decent processor. If you are prone to an average amount of multitasking, it is pretty enough to be efficient for you. For instance, most of the processors lag when you are playing Counter-Strike while connected to Teamspeak or Discord. Still, Ryzen 5 3600 won’t let you down. Apart from the release date, Ryzen 7 3700x is quite different from Ryzen 5 3600 in terms of specs and price. In terms of price, it is more expensive than Ryzen 5 3600 and can cost up to $350. With that said, the high value of the price is due to the enormous specs Ryzen 7 3700x offers. Now, this processor is termed to be a high tier processor with 8 cores and 16 threads, a perfect blend of cores and spec that can result in very efficient multitasking and gameplay.

Ryzen 7 3700x has a base clock of 3.6 GHz and can be overclocked to 4.4Ghz slightly better than Ryzen 5 3600. Moreover, Ryzen 7 3700x level 1 cache is 512Kb, level 2 cache 4MB, and level 3 cache 32MB. It has the same thermal design power as the Ryzen 5 3600, which is 65W with a similar maximum operating temperature of 95C.

The main fundamental difference between Ryzen 5 3600 and Ryzen 7 3700x apart from the price is the number of cores and threads. If you feel that your system is not up to the mark while multitasking using Ryzen 3600, you may upgrade to Ryzen 7 3700x.

Furthermore, keeping in mind the price for gamers with a tight budget, the significant price difference between Ryzen 5 3600 and Ryzen 7 3700x does not do justice just due to an increase in cores and threads while the base clock speed is similar.

Ryzen 9 3900x is undoubtedly one of the best processors in the market. If your workload is more versatile and you fell behind due to the slow processing of the processor, you may upgrade from R7zen 7 3700x to Ryzen 9 3900x. There is complete faith that Ryzen 9 3900x is a processor with no complaints due to the offering of 12 cores with 24 threads.

This processor is lethal when it comes to gaming, multitasking or anything. The base clock of Ryzen 9 3900x is 3.8GHz, and you can overclock it to 4.6Ghz. With a total of level 1 cache 768kb, level 2 cache 6MB, and level 3 cache of 64MB, Ryzen 9 3900x is a beast processor.

With such enormous specs, Ryzen 9 3900x thermal power design increases to 105W compared to Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 of only 65W. Moreover, the maximum operating temperature for Ryzen 9 3900x is similar to Ryzen 5 3600 and Ryzen 7 3600x that is 95C.

To conclude, every processor mentioned above is great in its way. Still, to me personally, Ryzen 5 3600 is the most value to money processor. Subsequently, if you are more prone to multitasking, you may move on to Ryzen 7 3700x or Ryzen 9 3900x, which are still better options. Furthermore, upgrading the processor will not drastically change the gameplay unless you are prone to run other applications such as Discord, Slash or TeamSpeak etc. In such a way, the upgrading processor will increase the performance due to the addition of new cores and threads.

Unfortunately, a similar misfortune happened to Intel, when the latter began to run out of 14nm models when trying to move to 10nm. The reason is not so serious, but it significantly hit the final price tag and raised it higher.

    At the start of sales, the retail price of the entire Ryzen 3rd generation line was 40-50% higher than the recommended one. For Ryzen 5 3600, it was about 7,000 hryvnias instead of 5,000, and I generally keep quiet about other models. This is not so critical, and now 3600-ku can be found for 6,000 or less, but it’s still a lot. Why?

    Competition. Not from Intel, which is funny. And from the previous generation Ryzen. Ryzen 7 2700X costs about the same, but there are +2 cores and a cooler cooler. And the Ryzen 7 1800X, similar to the 2700X in terms of power, is generally 4,500 hryvnias on the used market. But does the newcomer, the youngest of the new Matisse generation Zen 2 line, have a chance to beat the older processors of previous generations? D.A.

    What answer does Intel have? The Core i5-9600K without the bundled cooler and with a TDP of 95W costs the same, requires a new motherboard and an investment in a cooler that can handle more than 95W of heat dissipation — because, as we all know, 95W is Intel’s recommendation for stock frequencies. If you want Boost, cool better. Ryzen 5 3600 has 65 W, and not for drain, but for Boost.

    Comparison with Core i5 in terms of power did not work, but there are enough of them on the Internet. About Intel Core i5-9400F and others like them, I won’t even talk about it, the gap there is completely indecent.     Analysis of the results

    So. When overclocked to 4200 MHz on all cores and overclocked Silicon Power RAM to 3200 MHz, the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 is equal to the Ryzen 7 1800X in 10% of tasks and significantly outperforms it in the rest. I didn’t overclock the 1800X, because before the BIOS update, automatic Boost up to 4100 MHz was achieved by itself, and the stable frequency was not taken with knobs above 3800 MHz, which would be even worse. And after updating the BIOS, this did not make much sense.

    The result of 3600 in games didn’t surprise me, to be honest. Subtle hints of dominance gave extra core clock and a DOUBLE increase in the L3 cache, which AMD decided to rename to GameCache (and because of this, a petition was launched on Reddit to rename everything back). If anything, I don’t support such frills, but this time I at least understand why they are needed — it’s really worth paying attention to doubling the cache, because it really works, without conventions. That’s to attract attention and came up with a loud term.

    But marketing is marketing, and the result for the Ryzen 5 3600 is in the region of statistical error with the Core … no, not the i5-9600K, but the i7-8700K. In games. In productivity, he is far ahead. No wonder I wrote in the headline that this is a potential i7 killer.

    I was surprised by the productivity. Synthetics is one thing, you can drool on the numbers for a long time, but the cutoff is more than 80 seconds from rendering a 10-minute video in Premiere Pro … In h365, with Lumetri, without the participation of a video card … Yes, in overclocking to 4200 MHz on all cores and overclocking RAM, but even on the drain time is cut off. The only thing is that I did not have time to compare the processors in DaVinci Resolve, but I can roughly imagine how much faster work will be in Adobe Lightroom and After Effects.

    Temperatures

    Temperatures… I’m really confused. The fact is that after updating the BIOS (and it was an epic night long), I lost control over the fan speed on be quiet! Dark Rock TF. And I’m not sure that the turntables basically accelerated or slowed down. Plus — the 7-nanometer architecture of the pebble, which should be cooler.

    On the other hand, overclocking on 6 cores to 4200 MHz is not 3700 MHz on 8 cores. Maybe that’s where the 10 degree difference comes from. Or is it an anomaly “Zharka”, and I drank “Cossacks” vodka, and instead of Ryzen 5 3600 AMD slipped me “Medusa” in foil from “Alenka” chocolate.

    Working with RAM

    By the way, this anomaly did not end there. With the overclocking of the RAM to 3200 MHz with timings of 16-18-18-36, glucosaurs began to come across. Y-Cruncher refused to work normally, citing a bug, Tomb Raider crashed twice when trying to start with DX12, PCMark crashed twice during the main test, Ryzen Master software starts once and refuses to work after a reboot — up to reinstallation.

    Problems with packaging

    And a small note about the review sample. I have no idea why, but it was shipped in a 2nd gen Ryzen box. This is immediately clear — the box from Ryzen Matisse has gray accents. Plus — instead of the standard Wraith Stealth cooler, which also lost its copper core, the Ryzen 5 3600 was shipped with, all of a sudden, a Wraith Prism RGB model with four copper tubes. And it’s not that I’m against such a cool bundled cooler, but it’s bundled with the Ryzen 7 2700X.

    Because of this, there is an assumption that due to problems with test samples at the boundary, the processor had to be packed in an old box from under the old processor, simply by sticking a new sticker. This will not affect retail samples in any way — the box clearly and clearly says that it is not for sale. I just won’t be testing the Ryzen 5 3600 on the stock cooler since it’s not stock.
