AMD FX-8370 (Vishera) 8-Core Processor Review – goldfries

The AMD FX-8000 series processor, old stuff but still pretty neat. I’m an FX-8350 user myself, with the processor powering my super aged work rig.

What I don’t understand about AMD is how they can come up with new processor models with no significant change and slap it a new model number, I reviewed the FX-8350 back in 2013 and we’re looking at pretty much the same thing today.

The good news is that the FX-8370 comes bundled with AMD Wraith Cooler, the bad news is that the AMD FX-8370’s performance is nothing new.

Processor Details, Test Setup & Overclocking

Try as I may, I wasn’t able to clock it any higher even though I pumped the maximum voltage available on the motherboard.

Benchmarks

The following are the test results.

x264 – 10bit to 8bit Video Conversion

The source video is a 720p MKV file that is 90 seconds in duration. x264 settings at the slowest.

Processor Time Taken
(Seconds)
AMD FX-8370 212
AMD FX-8350 228
AMD FX-9370 200
AMD FX-9590 185
Intel Core i5-4460 232

The overclock gave the Pentium a significant boost in performance but it’s still no where near the capability of a Core i3 with 2C / 4T.

AMD FX-8370 89
AMD FX-8350 93
AMD FX-9370 84
AMD FX-9590 79
Intel Core i5-4460 95

Temperature

X264 10bit to 8bit conversion was used to stress the card. Fan settings are at Auto. Room set to ~25c.

Processor Idle(°C) Load (°C)
AMD FX-8370 with Wraith Cooler (Auto) 31 67
AMD FX-8370 with Wraith Cooler (Max) 31 64
AMD FX-8370 with Wraith Cooler (Half) 32 79

The FX-8370 comes with Wraith Cooler and as you can see it is possible to run it at half fan speed to keep it silent, on AUTO mode (set in BIOS) the FAN does reach moderate loudness as it attempts to keep the processor cool.

Power Consumption

Power Consumption measurement is based on readings taken from watt-meter. Power consumption is based on entire system, comprising of the processor, a motherboard, 2 sticks of RAM and 1 fan for cooling purpose. For this setup, the power consumption is inclusive of the R7 250 graphics card. Estimated actual draw is calculated based on 90% power efficiency of PSU, and deducting an approximate of 15W for GPU, SSD and cooling fan.

Condition Peak (W)
Idle 50
Video Conversion 214
Estimated Actual Draw 177

The Verdict

The AMD FX-8370 retails at RM 880, comes bundled with Wraith Cooler while the non-Wraith cooler bundle retails at RM 830.

While I’m not impressed by the slight performance gain that the FX-8370 has over the FX-8350, I whole-heartedly recommend the FX-8370 with Wraith Cooler bundle if you’re looking for an affordable 8-core setup, works great when paired with an affordable AMD 970 chipset motherboard.

If you’re stuck with an AMD AM3+ setup then the ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer/3.1 Motherboard is probably one of the best board you can get, especially now that it comes with USB 3.1 capability.

Being part of ASRock’s gaming series, it’s no surprise that the board is black and red in color, a matching theme for AMD setups too and works great with any red and black looking components.

The board comes with ASRock’s Digi Power , 8 + 2 Power Phase Design and as you can see the socket area is clear of large heatsinks.

Nothing spectacular to highlight about the area where the DIMM slots are located either.

Going further down, one starts to realize – where da heck are the POWER / RESET buttons? This is a high-end board from ASRock and why aren’t those buttons around? And is there even a debug LED? Nope there isn’t any, which is rather sad because those features have always been around for many ASRock higher range boards for Intel camp.

Not only that the board has limited SATA connection, no SATA Express connectivity but it does come with M.2 Socket 10Gb/s (PCIe Gen2 x2 & SATA3).

Here are the PCI-E slots, supporting both AMD CrossfireX and Nvidia SLI configurations.

The board comes with additional PCIe Power Connector at the other end of the board, just in case you need additional power to reach PCI-E slots.

I/O ports are important and the ASRock board does not fall short in this aspect.

– 1 x PS/2 Mouse Port
– 1 x PS/2 Keyboard Port
– 1 x Optical SPDIF Out Port
– 5 x USB 2. 0 Ports (Supports ESD Protection (ASRock Full Spike Protection))
– 1 x Fatal1ty Mouse Port (USB 2.0) (Supports ESD Protection (ASRock Full Spike Protection))
– 4 x USB 3.0 Ports (ASMedia Hub) (Supports ESD Protection (ASRock Full Spike Protection))
– 1 x eSATA3 Connector
– 1 x RJ-45 LAN Port with LED (ACT/LINK LED and SPEED LED)
– HD Audio Jacks: Rear Speaker / Central / Bass / Line in / Front Speaker / Microphone

Last but not least, the star of the package – the USB 3.1 add-on card.

More details at the official product page.

User Experience

The board works as it should, I had no issues going about the UEFI and even to overclock the processor.

Besides the lack of on-board buttons and debug LED, I can’t fault the board on any other matter.

The Verdict

The ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer/3.1 Motherboard retails at RM 673, if USB 3.1 isn’t something you require then there’s the model without the USB 3. 1 add-on card retailing at RM 614.

There are models that are of lower price than the 2 mentioned but they do not come with the power delivery design such as these 2.

Game Speed

Performance in games and similar applications, according to our tests.

The performance of 4 cores, if any, and performance per core has the greatest impact on the result, since most games do not fully use more than 4 cores.

The speed of caches and working with RAM is also important.

Speed in office use

Performance in everyday work such as browsers and office applications. nine0003

The performance of 1 core has the greatest impact on the result, since most of these applications use only one, ignoring the rest.

Similarly, many professional applications such as various CADs ignore multi-threaded performance.

Speed in heavy applications

Performance in resource-intensive tasks loading a maximum of 8 cores.

The performance of all cores and their number has the greatest impact on the result, since most of these applications willingly use all the cores and increase the speed accordingly. nine0003

At the same time, certain periods of work can be demanding on the performance of one or two cores, for example, applying filters in the editor.

Data obtained from tests by users who tested their systems with and without overclocking. Thus, you see the average values corresponding to the processor.

Different tasks require different CPU strengths. A system with few fast cores and low memory latency will be fine for the vast majority of games, but will be inferior to a system with a lot of slow cores in a rendering scenario. nine0003

We believe that a minimum of 4/4 (4 physical cores and 4 threads) processor is suitable for a budget gaming PC. At the same time, some games can load it at 100%, slow down and freeze, and performing any tasks in the background will lead to a drop in FPS.

Ideally, the budget shopper should aim for a minimum of 4/8 and 6/6. A gamer with a big budget can choose between 6/12, 8/8 and 8/16. Processors with 10 and 12 cores can perform well in games with high frequency and fast memory, but are overkill for such tasks. Also, buying for the future is a dubious undertaking, since in a few years many slow cores may not provide sufficient gaming performance. nine0003

When choosing a processor to work with, consider how many cores your programs use. For example, photo and video editors can use 1-2 cores when working with filtering, and rendering or converting in the same editors already uses all threads.

Data obtained from tests by users who tested their systems both with overclocking (maximum value in the table) and without (minimum). A typical result is shown in the middle, the more filled in the color bar, the better the average result among all tested systems. nine0003

Performance

Cores The total number of physical cores. 6
ThreadsNumber of threads. The number of logical processor cores that the operating system sees. nine0132

6
Multi-Threading Technology With Intel’s Hyper-threading and AMD’s SMT technology, one physical core is recognized by the operating system as two logical cores, thereby increasing processor performance in multi-threaded applications. Missing
Base frequencyThe guaranteed frequency of all cores (P-cores in the case of the corresponding architecture) of the processor at maximum load. It is important to remember that speed and frequency are not directly related. For example, a new processor at a lower frequency may be faster than an old one at a higher one. nine0132

3.5 GHz
Turbo frequencyThe maximum frequency of one processor core in turbo mode. Manufacturers allow modern processors to independently increase the frequency of one or more cores under low-threaded loads, due to which performance is noticeably increased. It may depend on the nature of the load, the number of loaded cores, temperature and the specified limits. Significantly affects the speed in games and applications that are demanding on the frequency of the CPU, but do not load all threads. nine0132

4.1 GHz
Free multiplier Allows you to specify any multiplier, which is convenient for manual overclocking. It’s worth mentioning that old-school multiplier or bus overclocking is a thing of the past. Yes
BCLK System bus frequency. Some motherboards allow you to achieve a good performance boost by slightly raising the bus frequency. Often this has a bad effect on the stability of the system. nine0132

200
CPU multiplier. The final CPU frequency is determined by the simple formula BCLK * CPU multiplier. Modern processors instantly change the multiplier of each of the cores, taking into account the type of load, temperature, consumption and settings in the BIOS. 17.5
TDPThermal Design Power is an indicator that determines heat dissipation in standard operation. The cooler or water cooling system must be rated for a larger value. Remember that with a factory bus or manual overclocking, TDP increases significantly. nine0132

95 W

Cache and RAM

L1 Cache First level cache. Modern processors use a multi-level cache. The first is the fastest, but the smallest. In the case of an L1 access and a miss, the L2 cache is searched for the next stage. 288K
L2 Cache Second level cache. Holds more data, but is slower. 6MB
L3 Cache L3 cache. AMD created the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with a record-breaking L3 volume, which reduced the requirements for memory frequency and significantly increased the number of frames in many games. 8MB (shared)
Supported type of RAM The type of RAM determines its frequency and timings (speed), availability, price. DDR3
Dual-channel

Video core

Integrated graphics core Allows you to use your computer without a discrete graphics card. The monitor is connected to the video output on the motherboard. If earlier integrated graphics made it possible to simply work at a computer, today it can replace budget video accelerators and makes it possible to play most games at low settings. N/A

PCI

PCI-E Computer bus version of PCI Express. The bandwidth and power limit depend on the version. There is backward compatibility. Gen 2
