1. The lens is designed for B-mount (not to be confused with C), this is a copy of Pentacon Six (P6) mount. The Vega-12B lens was standard for a number of medium format cameras Kyiv-6S, Kyiv-60, Kyiv-88S, etc. It could seem. that 90mm is too much for a regular one. But on medium format the angle of view for 90mm was much wider than on 35m film.

2. As befits an old manual lens, it has focus scale, manual iris control and depth of field scale. Depth of field indication is available from aperture 4.0 to 22.0. The aperture control ring allows you to set the aperture to 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22. The aperture control ring has only fixed values, when you set the next or previous value, a pleasant click is heard. The focus ring is metal and ribbed, has a stroke of about 300 degrees. Large stroke of the focusing ring is very convenient for smooth focusing. When used on full frame or 35mm film, this will be a normal 90mm lens. On a cropped NIKON DX sensor, the field of view will be equivalent to that of a 135mm lens on 35mm film. In any case, both in full frame and in crop, the lens with its telerange is great for portraiture.

4. Those who read Radozhiva have already noticed that basically all old lenses have a very good metal construction . Vega-12B is no exception. The lens, with its considerable weight, is pleasant to hold in the hand. Any camera with Vega looks pretty decent. The weight balance with my Nikon D200 is perfectly distributed, on a small Nikon D40 the lens seriously outweighs the camera.

How to use the Vega-12B lens on modern cameras

Picture on Vega-12B

Understand correctly, the best picture result can be obtained from Vega-12B on its native medium 6×6 format. In extreme cases, it will also be good on a full frame, but a certain zest of the Vega-12B is lost on the crop, although, nevertheless, the photos are simply excellent. Therefore, I included the Vega-12B in the list of the best Soviet fixed portrait lenses. In general, the picture does not have vignetting and distortion on the crop. The bokeh is good, the circles in the blur zone are clearly visible. XA are well corrected, but due to small spherical aberrations, the picture slightly borrowed the effect of a monocle — well-defined contours in the photo, but slightly soft. Sharpness? I don’t want to talk about sharpness on Vega. Who cares, then at 2.8 there is already decent sharpness. As the aperture is closed, the sharpness increases almost linearly. The contrast is excellent. Backlight holds mediocre, since the lens has only a single layer of enlightenment. In the viewfinder, the picture is slightly yellow, but the WB on a digital camera copes with this.
