MSI B460 series motherboards allow the processor to run at higher frequencies by increasing the power limit.

However, for a Core i5, i7 or i9 processordid not suffer from overheating, it may require a special cooling system, since the standard Intel cooler will not be effective enough under heavy loads, for example, when running Blender or CineBench benchmarks. In other words, a standard cooler needs a lower power limit. Which one? And what limit should be set for powerful air and water cooling systems in order to be able to unlock the full speed potential of a particular processor?

MSI has developed a new feature that guides the user to set the power limit depending on the cooling system used. It’s called CPU Cooler Tuning — «CPU Cooler Tuning», it’s easy and simple to use. When the computer boots for the first time (or every time after clearing the BIOS settings), the motherboard prompts you to specify the type of processor cooler and sets the appropriate power limit. This feature is available on MSI motherboards with Intel Z49 chipsets.0, B460 and h510.

Take the MAG B460M Mortar WIFI board as an example. It offers a choice of three types of CPU coolers: boxed (65W), tower air (255W) and water (255W). Shadow Rock 3 came to us in a cardboard box with full color printing on a black background. In principle, the process is familiar — a branded backplate is behind, frames are attached to the front, to which the cooler is then screwed. Then we connect the fan to the pins on the motherboard.

What about temperatures?

The test stand today is represented by the following components.

Testing was carried out for more than one day, so we will call the temperature in the room several times. The case and processor fans operate in the «silent» profile.

At 27 degrees in the room, the CPU idle temperature under Shadow Rock 3 cooling was kept at 35 degrees. When the room value dropped to 25 degrees, the processor temperature dropped to 33 degrees, rising to 35 with simple office loads, for example, when typing in the admin panel of a site with js scripts.

We also ran through synthetic tests, loading the processor to the maximum. Let’s start with AIDA64. The temperature in the room is 23 degrees.

I loaded the LinX “stone” much more seriously over several runs, bringing the processor to 98 degrees, which caused the test to be interrupted.

In addition, Prime95 managed to cause an error in the calculations, which at some point heated the core to 93 degrees. Testing continued in a truncated form, but the temperature did not rise above this value.

The creation of Intel can withstand 4.6 GHz on all cores for 30 minutes. The maximum temperature per core was 79 degrees.

Cinebench loaded the processor up to 76 degrees during a multi-core run.

It is worth noting that even in this state, Shadow Rock 3 remains quiet.

Of course, these are extreme loads that you are unlikely to achieve in games or using your PC for work, and the processor is overclocked. But just in case, we checked what the Intel Core-i5-9 will show600KH and BE Quiet! Shadow Rock 3 in real life.

When working, loading the processor with a variety of tasks, we were able to reach a maximum of 71 degrees. The same result was achieved after losing about an hour in Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Civilization VI and Metro Exodus.

When encoding audio files with a total weight of 662 MB from wav to AAC, the peak temperature was only 67 degrees.

Finally, there was a 45-minute task in the built-in 7zip benchmark with a maximum memory load of 73 degrees.
