> AMD FX-8350 test in 20 games in 2022: the old guard is on the move!

01-08-2022

We complete our cycle of testing retro processors with the 8-core veteran AMD FX-8350. He survived lawsuits for his 4 modules, hundreds and thousands of tests, the birth and death of graphics engines. And it still pulls. Or not? Will Battlefield 2042 finally be playable? For 1.5 years we have not touched this «ficus» and now it’s time to charge it back into the system, overclock everything properly and protest in 20 actual games! Go!

So, let’s first remember what kind of processor this is and why was it «tried»?

AMD advertised our ficus as the first CPU with real 8 cores. Whereas Intel could only have 4 cores with Hyper-Threading. But in fact, AMD cheated. Nuts were not separate, but collected in pairs in 4 modules. Consequently, access to some critical components of the processor went only to 4 threads.

Take a look at the CPU-Z screenshot. The L1 Data cache is divided into all 8 cores, and L1 Instruction is already divided into 4 modules. The same is true for the second level cache. By the way, the younger FX from past materials have the same modular structure, so it will be interesting to see how modern games will perceive 2 more cores compared to the 6-core AMD FX-6300.

When this story was exposed, users filed a class action lawsuit against AMD for being sold four dual-core CPUs under one cover. And they won. The court ordered AMD to pay $300 each to the plaintiffs deceived by advertising.

In general, by hook or by crook, but there are 8 Vishera cores that operate at the declared frequency up to 4.2 GHz with a fairly serious TDP of 125 watts.

Eternal FX worked on Socket AM3+ gaming motherboard — ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer. She has a total of 10 power phases according to the 8 + 2 scheme.

The Corsair iCUE h250i Elite Capellix RGB dropsy has taken on the hot temper of the 32nm processor.

Among other things, it comes with cool CORSAIR iCUE software. In it, you can control the speed of rotation of the fans and the pump, control the temperature of the liquid and the processor, control the backlight — everything is beautiful and understandable.

The 16 GB RAM was loaded with two G. Skill Trident X DDR3-2400 sticks. In stock, it ran at 1600 MHz and overclocked at 2400 MHz with timings of 10-12-12-31.

In order not to rest on the video card, we took a powerful model — Sapphire Radeon RX 6900 XT NITRO + SE with 16 gigs of video memory. We thank the Telemart.ua store for it, where, among other things, there are tons of components for PCs, peripherals and laptops. And recently they began to offer additional services: upgrade, cleaning and replacement of thermal paste, diagnostics, data transfer, and much more. You can use the services in large cities of Ukraine right now.

System and other applications installed on Patriot BURST 9 SATA SSD60 GB. Most games launched quickly from the 2 terabyte Patriot Burst Elite 2.5″. RM750x White 750W Built entirely with Japanese high temperature series capacitors, this is the best power supply you can find in terms of reliability and durability, hence the 10 year warranty.0003

Corsair 5000D Tempered Glass White has become a haven for all hardware. This is a minimalistic case with excellent cooling capabilities and all sorts of gadgets. For example, you can buy a branded raiser before it and install the video card vertically. And the side window will allow you to admire some 24×7 3-fan beauty. It has a translucent body, nice and fast switches and a Pixart sensor with sensitivity up to 19000dpi. Well, the Endgame MPC-450 Cordura mat provided excellent glide. If anything, the brand and the mouse are exclusively available on the website of our friends — Telemart.ua.

Now let’s find out how the AMD FX-8350 overclocks and what bonus it gives. And we will quickly find out how much the performance has improved compared to the lower processors of the series.

The most stable result in our system was achieved with the following settings:

  • XMP profile for 2400 MHz memory;
  • Processor multiplier 23, which gave 4600 MHz or plus 9.5%;
  • The voltage on the cores was fixed at around 1. 48 V;
  • Northbridge and HT bus frequency increased to 2600 MHz.

After all the manipulations, the system passed the simultaneous stress tests on the CPU and GPU, including temperature tests.

The result is not very cool, because the processor has a fairly high maximum frequency by default, but it is there, and in combination with overclocking of other components, it can take grandfather into space. Let’s see.

Geekbench turned out to be one of the most sensitive benchmarks. It showed a 25% increase in multi-threaded performance. The AMD FX-8350 also worked well for one core — 14% better than stock.

Naturally, the speed of working with RAM in AIDA64 has grown well — by 25-44%. Of these, the access delay time decreased by 15%.

CineBench R23 managed to get the smallest bonus — 13% in both load modes.

What we like about the FX processor series test is that in games the bonus is always higher than in synthetics.

The Assassin’s Creed Valhalla benchmark at low settings and 100% render scale pleased with a 31-37% bonus in the average frequency and very rare events. Does it feel? Of course yes!

AMD FX-8350 performed well in Cyberpunk 2077 in stock, offering an average of 26 to 61 fps. After overclocking, very rare events went up to 32 fps, and the average frequency went up to 79. This is plus 23 and 30% respectively.

And finally, Forza Horizon 5 at the same Full HD resolution and low graphics settings. Here the increase is less. Although, again, even without overclocking, the FX did a great job. The final result is from 15% to 27% bonus.

Since this is AMD’s latest retro cycle processor, let’s do a little comparison. It turns out that the overclocked old ficus is 14-20% better than the younger 6-core one. This is almost a net bonus from two additional cores, since they have the same cache. And the frequency of the FX-8350 is even a little less — by 100 MHz.

Moving on to gameplay in 20 games on an overclocked FX-8350. And in the end, we will do the traditional sorting by category — playable-non-grabable.

Apex Legends didn’t hesitate to crank up the graphics quality to the max. And our premonition didn’t let us down – the game ran great from the very first match. Without these digestions-loads. There were no problems with either smoothness or control. On average, the frequency kept around 118 fps, and very rare events — 51. The beginning is inspiring.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and ultra-high graphics. The path of this game in our test cycle can be described as the family life of a couple who recently got married. Where 4 cores are the first years of life together, 6 are already conscious, and 8 cores, a la 8 years, is the time of unconditional understanding. This is how you can describe the work of the AMD FX-8350 in this game — they understood each other, they are not stupid, and only sometimes they can grumble because of insignificant trifles. In short, no problem — 70 fps on average and 0.1% is a good 42.

Battlefield 2042 with minimal graphics in 128 player mode is still in its repertoire. There is little pleasant — there are constant twitches and subfreezes are often found. Although, in fairness, the gameplay is much better than with lower processors. Now we managed to squeeze out 45 fps.

After «Battle» oD: Warzone is perceived as a breath of fresh air on the maximum graphics. At the beginning of the match, small twitches occur for a while, but then almost completely disappear. The video sequence becomes completely smooth, and the control becomes obedient. Usually the meter showed over 60 fps, which can be stabilized by turning on V-Sync — this will also add comfort.

Cyberpunk 2077 has also evolved to 8 cores, low graphics are much easier for her than the younger FX itself. Rare and very rare events usually do not look very good, but it cannot be said that they greatly spoil the gameplay — you can play and get high at an average of 44 fps.

Moreover, you can enjoy interesting dialogues and a rich game world even with ultra-graphics. Yes! The frame rate drops only slightly, but the picture improves significantly. In general, there is space to find your optimal balance.

Deathloop still pleases with high graphics. Like the younger processors, in some places the FX-8350 also drops the frame rate below 30 fps. But this does not affect the comfort of the gameplay much. So all in all it’s good — we get around 48 fps most of the time. Plus, you can still add about 5 fps to this by slightly lowering the graphics.

Dying Light 2 runs and jumps great at high settings. The only thing you need to warm up a little first is to stretch the ligaments. On average, the FX-8350 manages to prepare 112 fps, with very rare events at 47.

Dota 2 allows you to select very high graphics. From the last video, you probably remember that sometimes it takes up to 10 minutes for her to come to her senses and remember what kind of processor it is. Once the contact is established, everything is fine. On average, almost a hundred fps, and during very powerful battles — about 60.

I remember there was a time when Escape From Tarkov was considered a very demanding game. But how many times have we played with a cool picture. In this case, with the prefix ultra. Apparently, this burden concerns the processor to a lesser extent than the video card. CPU load is far from full 100%, which allows you to give a very flat Frame Time graph and stable 60 + fps. In addition, the stability of the footage is confirmed by a small gap between the Average value and 0.1% Low in the monitoring window.

It’s nice to see how Far Cry 6 has evolved — everything feels better with ultra-graphics. Basically there is smooth and sensitive control at an average of 56 fps. The only thing that catches the eye is frame breaks during fast movements around the camera. In fact, it’s a common thing, but in this game it somehow stands out surprisingly. It is solved in the traditional way — by activating V-Sync in the graphics settings.

The car of Forza Horizon 5 has already been tested on 4 and 6 cores, so on 8 cores it flew away as if it had just left the salon — without wheezing, creaking or rootstocks. You can present it only for the incomprehensible subsidence of the 0.1% Low indicator, which can also be seen on the Frame Time chart. Ooooh right now. This kick feels like a microfreeze. And that’s all. In general, it is played conveniently with a frequency of under 90 fps

Fortnite was played with epic graphics settings in the DX12 API. Here is another proof why it is better to see the gameplay with live commentary. See what a cool average frequency of about 92 fps. But we look at the Frame Time chart and see red bursts. At this point, subfreezes occur. There are more on one map, less on the other. But they are constantly present. This can also be seen in the 0.1% low indicator.

One of the most popular Playstation games, God of War, is best played with ultra graphics. Of course, if the video card allows. For the FX-8350, this mode is the most optimal. With him, the picture is on top, and the video sequence can be called convenient. Of the minuses — constant small twitches, which can be seen from the excitement of the Frame Time graph. This does not affect the control, it is obedient, and stability can be added by limiting the frame rate at 40 fps.

You can download skills in multiplayer in Halo Infinite on ultra-graphics. As you remember, in previous articles we mentioned constant twitches. Not critical, but present. And that they were treated by turning on vertical sync. So, AMD FX-8350 also needs such a life hack. After that, the video sequence will become almost perfect.

We continue to recruit participants for our G20, that is, 20 rake games. Hitman 3 definitely falls into it, as before, at maximum graphics. Of the controversial moments, only drawdowns in the region of 30 fps. Where it’s very good. But the 47th is not embarrassing. The main thing for him is that the average frequency is as high as possible above his ordinal number.

Rainbow Six: Siege is already welcomed as a native. Here you have ultra-graphics, and a full render … and 179 fps on average! In short: lifted, hugged, pressed, kissed! At the same time, even very rare events are amused in the region of hundreds of fps.

And finally we are finishing our run in Warframe with high graphics on the improved engine. Here, too, everything is fine — the processor is cooling, almost no one is pulling the character, and cats on this planet seem to have just begun spring. Average — 137 fps with very rare events within 95 fps.

Conclusions

Is the everlasting ficus still alive? What a question, he’s eternal — of course alive! Compared to the 6-core AMD FX-6300, Grandpa has noticeably improved frame rates in most games. According to the results of 3 benchmarks by 14–20%. So the additional 2 cores were not superfluous. After complex overclocking of the system, the AMD FX-8350 runs well in 17 of the 20 games tested.

Battlefield 2042 in 128 player mode. Although we must pay tribute, it runs much better than with younger CPUs. She also caught Fortnite as subfreezes more often than before, so she migrated to the yellow zone. Possibly due to the lower operating frequency. Well, the same claims to PUBG.

Just like you wrote in the comments, we are testing a processor with a cool motherboard, memory and video card. But that’s the point — to show the maximum that can be achieved with it.

After a series of tests of 4 retro processors, you have useful information — how they work, how they can be overclocked, and what games potentially allow you to play comfortably. Some owners of these gray-haired old men may think about overclocking and buying a normal discrete video card, which will migrate to a new system in the future. And others might want to upgrade the FX-4300 to the FX-8350. It is quite possible that someone will take and buy a used computer with this processor for games from the green zone and be happy.

Write in the comments at some stage of the choice you — what you dream of collecting, what you are looking at and what you are playing now on your hardware. It will be interesting to read. Denis Koziolek

AMD will pay users $12. 1 million in compensation for advertising Bulldozer-based processors as eight-core when they technically only had four cores. Each core included two execution units that shared a common cache and coprocessor.

    Judgment

AMD agreed to pay $12.1 million in compensation for false advertising of FX-8000 / 9000 processors based on the Bulldozer architecture in 2011. In the advertisement, the company positioned these chips as eight-core, although in fact they have only four cores. A class action lawsuit against AMD was filed by buyers of these processors in 2015.

It should be noted that this line of processors as a whole was not very successful. Users have complained about high power consumption, inability to achieve advertised speeds, and overall sluggish performance compared to direct competitors, Intel’s Sandy Bridge processors. Many believe that this line was the beginning of the collapse of AMD in the PC processor market, which ultimately brought the company to the brink of bankruptcy.

    Payouts

The lawsuit is against the AMD FX-8120, FX-8150, FX-8320, FX-8350, FX-8370, FX-9370 and FX-9590 models. The company touted them as «the first true eight-core desktop processors.» At launch, the FX-8120 cost $205 and the FX-8150 $245.

In addition, AMD required customers to pay an additional insurance premium, justifying this with the innovative nature of the product. The total amount of these awards was more than $60 million, in connection with which the English-language technical media consider the compensation of $12.1 million to be insufficient.

Of the indicated amount, approximately $3.63 million will go to cover legal costs, from $350 thousand to $700 thousand will be spent on administering the agreement, and from $7.77 million to $8.12 million the affected buyers will be able to divide among themselves, the AnandTech resource calculated .

Anyone who purchased the specified processor models through the AMD website or at a point of sale in California will be eligible to receive a portion of the refund. According to the court, approximately every fifth owner of these processors will apply for compensation. In this case, buyers will receive $35 in compensation for each chip.

    How many cores are there

Plaintiffs point out that the FX-8000/9000 processors did not have eight full cores, but four «dual-core modules» each. Each module had two execution units, but the cache, coprocessor, and some other resources were shared by these units. AMD decided that each such module could be counted as two cores, but the buyers did not agree, since it was impossible to execute individual processes on them.

    IT industry support

The concept of the processor core became the key to this litigation. AMD claimed that the vast majority of consumers understand the term «core» as well as the company itself. However, in January 2019, the court officially disagreed with the position of the vendor.
