Buying a processor for a gaming rig isn’t as hard as it used to be. Now that AMD’s Ryzen 5000-series and Intel’s 12th-gen Core CPUs come with more performance and cores than ever before, it’s hard to buy a stinker these days—especially because most games favor graphics firepower over CPU oomph. All that said, there are specific chips that stand out from the horde as the best gaming CPUs due to their price, performance, or nifty extras. And they won’t all break the bank like the powerful, but pricey Ryzen 7 5800X3D with its radical V-Cache and Intel’s 5.5GHz Core i9-12900KS.

Whether you’re on a budget or willing to pay for sheer face-melting speed, these are the best CPUs for gaming PCs that you can buy.

The best CPUs for gaming

Intel Core i5-12400 – Best gaming CPU for most people

Midrange CPUs are the sweet spot for PC gamers. In fact, if you don’t need the additional cores of pricier CPU options, this class of chip offers essentially the same gaming experience of processors that cost hundreds more. The reason? Most of the computing burden falls on your graphics card.

At an MSRP of about $200, the Intel Core i5-12400 strikes a smooth balance between performance and affordability. Sure, you don’t get the fancy mix of performance cores and efficiency cores found in the faster Alder Lake chips, but this six-core, 12-thread processor doesn’t suffer by having only performance cores. Have a peek at gaming benchmarks in reviews (like those at Guru3D and PCGamer) and you’ll see the Core i5-12400 usually trails behind the $320 Core i5-12600K and $589 Core i9-12900K by only a handful of frames at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K. You also don’t need to upgrade to Windows 11 to get the most out of this chip.

This CPU also outperforms AMD’s rival Ryzen 5 5600 slightly, which also just launched. If you’re upgrading from an older AM4 B450 motherboard, you may find it more cost-effective to stick with AMD, but otherwise, the 12400 is the chip to get.

Intel Core i9-12900K – Best high-end gaming CPU

Need more cores for productivity tasks, want eight cores for streaming or future-proofing against console hardware configurations, or simply demand the absolute fastest potential frame rates in any situation? The $589 Intel Core i9-12900K is the 16-core, 24-thread processor for you.

Its even faster variant, the newly released Core i9-12900KS, now holds the title of “fastest gaming processor,” but this standard version is the one you want. Paying an extra $150 nets you just a tiny bump in gaming performance. You may as well invest that money instead into cutting-edge (read: pricey) DDR5 memory and get most out of the 12900K.

AMD’s $550 Ryzen 9 5900X is another solid option that offers high frame rates, but paying that much for a 12-core chip doesn’t make sense if pure gaming is your goal.

If you simply want ultra-fast gaming frame rates and don’t need a borderline insane amount of CPU cores for productivity work, consider the step-down Core i7-12700K and Ryzen 7 5800X as well. Each costs roughly $450 and offer 12 and 8 cores, respectively. Meanwhile, if you don’t mind spending up for the ultimate 1080p gaming performance and already have a first- or second-generation Ryzen motherboard, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is a killer—albeit pricey—upgrade option.

Intel Core i3-12100F – Best budget gaming CPU

At last, builders on a budget finally have affordable chips to choose from. In a throwback to better times, you have several options in the $100 to $135(ish) range, with one extremely compelling standout among them. As you’ll see in gaming benchmarks from sites like Tom’s Hardware and TechSpot, Intel’s $110 Core i3-12100F doesn’t just offer a hefty boost in frame rates compared to AMD’s comparable offering. It also posts gaming performance nearly on par with Intel’s last-gen Core i5-11600K—a processor that costs twice as much.

You must have a dedicated graphics card to pair with this CPU, however. This variant of the $135 Core i3-12100 lacks integrated graphics, which is how you save cash. If you’re still saving your pennies for a (reasonably) affordable graphics card, you may instead want one of AMD’s APUs, which we discuss in the next entry below.

Ryzen 5 5600G – Best CPU if you can’t get a graphics card

It’s a rough time to build a gaming PC on a budget, especially given the availability and pricing of graphics cards. One workaround is to purchase an APU, or CPUs with supercharged integrated graphics. Both the $260 Ryzen 5 5600G and $360 Ryzen 7 5700G processors let you play most games at 720p or 1080p resolution. And after you snag a graphics card, you can simply drop it into your system, because the CPU cores are very good for mainstream gaming, as our Ryzen 7 5700G review showed.

The 5600G offers 6 cores and 12 threads, paired with 7 Radeon graphics cores clocked at 1.9GHz. The step-up 5700G bumps that up to 8 cores and 16 threads, alongside 8 Radeon cores running at 2GHz. Most shoppers on a budget are better off with the cheaper part, unless you have a specific need for the higher CPU core count in the Ryzen 7 chip.

How we test CPUs

We evaluate CPUs based on the benchmark results that span multiple use categories. Gaming performance is a key focus, and we run both synthetic tests (that is, dedicated benchmarking programs) and in-game benchmarks in a variety of modern titles. Our current suite includes Far Cry New Dawn, Gears Tactics, Horizon Zero Dawn, Metro Exodus, CS: Go, Red Dead Redemption, Ashes of the Singularity, and Rainbow Siege Six.

Test PCs are built with the CPU’s capabilities in mind—for example, Intel’s Core i9-12900K supports DDR5 RAM. Rival and older chips used for comparison are retested at the same time, with a similar use of appropriate contemporaneous hardware. In all our test rigs, we use a current high-end flagship graphics card to better isolate differences in the CPUs’ performance.

3DMark Update Adds New Gaming and OC CPU Benchmarks

UL Benchmarks has just released the latest expansion for their ever-popular 3DMark software suite. We’re big fans of 3DMark here at eTeknix, and it gets used pretty much daily for a range of hardware reviews that we do. However, today they’re adding a new set of dedicated CPU benchmarks. The 3DMark CPU Profile introduces a new approach to CPU benchmarking that shows how CPU performance scales with the number of cores and threads used. The new CPU Profile benchmark tests are available now in 3DMark Advanced Edition and 3DMark Professional Edition.

Instead of just producing a single number, the new 3DMark CPU Profile shows how CPU performance scales and changes with the number of cores and threads used. The CPU Profile has six tests, each of which uses a different number of threads. The benchmark starts by using all available threads. It then repeats using 16 threads, 8 threads, 4 threads, 2 threads, and ends with a single-threaded test.

The end result should give us a much better understanding of how any CPU scales with various tasks across each of the cores available. Not only will it give a good comparison for other CPUs, but other those of the same model, as a sort of test that you’re meeting the right performance standard; handy for stress testing and overclocking too!

More Cores, More Theads!

The trend in processor development is towards an increasing number of cores. More cores mean more work can be performed at the same time. Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) enables each core to run multiple threads. The more threads you have, the greater the throughput of work. However, core counts are increasing faster than the ability of popular applications to make use of them. Some tasks are more suited to multithreading and multiple cores than others.

A modern CPU benchmark should demonstrate the benefits of having many cores and threads by scaling beyond 16 threads. It should also show how a processor performs for gaming and other real-world activities where performance rarely scales beyond a modest number of cores and threads. It is not possible to represent both these aspects of CPU performance with a single number. A different type of benchmark is needed.

3DMark CPU Profile benchmarks

The 3DMark CPU Profile includes six tests that feature a combination of physics computations and custom simulations. All six tests use the same workload; it is only the amount of threading that changes, with tests limited to using either 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, or the maximum number of available threads.

Each of the six tests produces a score. Scores are comparable across tests. You can compare the 8-thread score with the 4-thread score, for example. A higher score means the CPU performed the work faster. A hardware monitoring chart shows you how the CPU clock frequency and CPU temperature changed while the tests were running.

How to benchmark and compare CPU performance

The 3DMark CPU Profile shows you how your CPU scores compare with other results from the same processor. The green bars on the 3DMark CPU Profile result screen show you how your scores compare with the best scores for your CPU. The longer the green bar, the closer your score is to the best result for your CPU model. The median score, shown by the marker, shows the performance level you should expect for your CPU. In most cases, the median represents performance with stock settings. If your score is below the median, it may indicate a problem with cooling or background processes. Check the hardware monitoring chart to see how the CPU temperature changed during the run. The distance from the median marker to the end of the bar represents the overclocking potential of the CPU. For overclockers, the 3DMark CPU Profile provides more ways to measure the effects of overclocking and more ways to compete for the highest scores!

Please note that these features are powered by benchmark results from 3DMark users. These insights may be unavailable for some CPU models until enough results are submitted. Your 3DMark CPU Profile scores should increase up to the number of threads supported by your CPU. In this screenshot from a CPU with 4 cores and 8 threads, you can see that the scores for 8 threads, 16 threads and Max threads are the same within the usual 3% accuracy range for UL benchmarks. For CPUs with SMT, which have more threads than cores, the benefit of having more threads decreases beyond the number of CPU cores.

Six Levels of CPU Performance

The 3DMark CPU Profile includes six tests. These six levels make it easier to compare the performance of different CPU models by looking at the results from thread levels they have in common.

Max Threads

The Max-threads score represents the full performance potential of your CPU when using all available threads. The practical use cases for this score lie outside of gaming in extremely heavy, multithreading workloads such as movie-quality rendering, simulations, and scientific analysis.

16 Threads

Computationally intensive tasks such as digital content creation and 3D rendering benefit from more threads, but the 16-threads score is less relevant for estimating practical gaming performance.

8 Threads

Modern DirectX 12 games make better use of multithreaded performance beyond 4 cores. The gaming performance of a CPU usually correlates most closely with the 8-threads score. This score also has a high correlation with the 3DMark Time Spy CPU score.

4 Threads and 2 Threads

Older games developed for DirectX 9 are often bottlenecked by the CPU on modern gaming PCs. The frame rates of popular esports titles, such as DotA 2, League of Legends, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, usually correlate most closely with the 2-threads and 4-threads scores.

1 Thread

The 1-thread score is a fundamental measure of the processor’s performance. For games and real-world use cases, however, the multithreaded scores are usually a better indicator of practical performance.

Note: Some tests were conducted additional times for parity. We test a minimum of three passes for each benchmark to ensure accuracy. In some instances — like the Witcher 3 tests — we double-up on passes to ensure the disparity seen is more significant than margin of error.

Intel i7-6700K vs. 4770K, 4790K GRID: Autosport Benchmarks

GRID: Autosport reveals a slight disparity between 4790K and 6700K performance.

At 145 FPS against 142 FPS, there’s hardly anything to write home about. Both the 4790K and 6700K offer high enough framerates to fulfill 144Hz display demands (assuming the GPU cooperates), with similarly high 0.1% low metrics.

GTA V shows effectively zero difference between the Haswell i7 units and newcomer Skylake:

The 6700K and 4790K are effectively tied (0.1% disparity is within margin of test error). We don’t see much difference until dropping down to an i3 in GTA V. The G3258 – although it is on this chart – is unplayable at these settings, as indicated by 0.1% and 1% lows.

The Witcher 3 exhibits seemingly anomalous performance. We performed additional test passes on the Witcher 3 to ensure a larger dataset. Each test pass placed the 6700K below our other CPUs (aside from the generations-old 3570K), something that we’d attribute to lower IPC or a mix of DDR4 CAS timing differences.

Metro: Last Light shows a slight difference, as GRID did:

The 6700K marginally leads the 4790K with a 2FPS delta. Not much exciting here by way of FPS jumps, but an improvement nonetheless. The Ivy Bridge architecture is led more dramatically, though it’s also a 4C/4T 3570K and Metro very clearly fronts a hyperthreading bias.

4770K, 4790K Shadow of Mordor Benchmarks

As with some of the other games, Shadow of Mordor shows effectively zero difference between Haswell and Skylake CPUs when it comes to 1080p gaming on a 980 Ti.

Intel i7-6700K Overclocking

We struggled to overclock our i7-6700K. Our sample is an engineering sample running on a pre-production motherboard, though both should be as close to the end product as possible without being actual retail devices.

We ultimately settled on 4. 6GHz at 1.30v for the i7-6700K. Time restricted the ability to dive deeper with some of the new cache and BCLK unlocks, but this is a topic we will revisit in greater depth in the immediate future. A full article will be dedicated to Skylake overclocking once we’ve got a better feel for what’s preventing a sturdier OC than our 4.6GHz output.

Conclusion

The biggest advantage of moving to a Skylake / Z170 platform is in memory capabilities, for those who can’t afford X99 but may perform tasks that’d benefit from DDR4. Gaming is not one of those tasks (there may actually be slight overhead for gaming). Video production and photo editing immediately see benefit from DDR4.

After the memory change, the next most noteworthy improvement over Z87/Z97 is the lane increment. At 36 lanes, Skylake and Z170 support more expansion devices than its 24-lane predecessor. This is something we won’t tap into until our next test, which will explore lane scalability on multiple platforms using various, real-world PCI-e configurations.

As it stands here and now, today, the i7-6700K feels similar to most of Intel’s other recent launches. For anyone on a remotely recent architecture, there’s just no reason to make the jump to Skylake unless for memory reasons – and those users likely know who they are. For gamers, anyone from Sandy Bridge onward should still be happily limited more by the GPU than the CPU. At a couple FPS – if lucky – Skylake isn’t a raw framerate-boosting platform. It’s more focused on technology, shrinking the process, and adding DDR4 to the consumer marketplace. The processor certainly isn’t bad, it’s just not exciting. Anyone who would have purchased a 4770K or 4790K should now consider the 6700K instead (assuming memory cost is a non-issue). Anyone who already owns Devil’s Canyon, Haswell Refresh, Haswell, Ivy Bridge, or Sandy Bridge can likely hold off.

Intel Raptor Lake flagship CPU leaked gaming benchmarks are causing some concern

Intel’s Raptor Lake flagship CPU has seen some further leaked benchmarks, and unlike the previous spillage, this is a juicier affair because they’re actual gaming tests.

The game benchmarks come from the same source on Chinese video sharing website Bilibili who provided results for the likes of CineBench and Geekbench recently, as flagged up by @harukaze5719 on Twitter.

Again, this is an engineering sample of the Core i9-13900K processor which is compared to its predecessor the 12900K, but we have to bear firmly in mind that it’s a pre-release chip, and also be very cautious about any leaked benchmarking, anyway.

Bearing those caveats in mind, across a selection of games including some popular titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, Horizon Zero Dawn and PUBG, the 13900K turned out to be about 5% faster for average frame rates at 1080p resolution, around 7% quicker at 1440p, and 3% better at 4K resolution.

The rough upshot of this is around a 5% increase for gaming performance compared to the 12900K, which feels rather disappointing on the face of it. Plus power usage is considerably cranked up for this 13900K sample, too, at least for the provided peak consumption figures which see the Raptor Lake chip hit 150W to 160W, when the 12900K sits at more like 120W to 140W (the figures vary quite widely depending on the game being played, as you’d expect).


This isn’t the best look for the incoming 13900K, then, but we definitely shouldn’t jump to any conclusions here. Realistically, we’d expect more of an increase for a new generation of CPUs than this, and we’re likely to get exactly that for a number of reasons.

Firstly, as we’ve already mentioned, this is a (purported) pre-release sample, and the finished flagship processor will be faster anyway. For starters, in these tests, the 13900K is boosting to 5.5GHz, and the rumored boost speed for the flagship is more like 5.8GHz or thereabouts. And the Raptor Lake platform is obviously not fully realized yet either, with for example early BIOS versions for Raptor Lake motherboards that are still not ready for launch – these too are works in progress.

The power consumption figures also seem a bit off to us, likely pointing to some wonkiness around the engineering sample being run through its paces here. Some of the individual benchmark results themselves look a little odd, too, with some seriously hefty hikes in performance for minimum frame rates here and there.

All of which is to say we wouldn’t be running around panicking about Raptor Lake being a damp squib just yet. Remember that the mentioned earlier benchmarking looked pretty promising, particularly around multi-core performance, with the chip still in a pre-release incarnation at that.

Intel made good progress with 12th-gen Alder Lake processors, snaring many an accolade particularly in terms of gaming versus Ryzen, so even just a reasonable step forward with this Raptor Lake refresh will still mean AMD needs to pull something out of the bag with Ryzen 7000.

Fortunately for Team Red, all rumors point to the new Zen 4 chips being something special, so it’s likely that the next-gen CPU battle will be a close fought race; certainly in terms of performance. This new 13th-gen leak does also hint at AMD being more likely to get a firmer lead in terms of the power efficiency crown, mind, and that could be more important than usual given the state of power bills which are currently getting out of control for many folks, and set to worsen in the future.

If you’re crunching numbers in a giant spreadsheet, transcoding a huge 4K video or playing a demanding game, you’ll need a computer that’s just plain speedy. We use Geekbench 4 (and 4.1), a synthetic benchmark, to measure overall performance. We then took the scores from all the laptops we’ve tested and listed the top 10 in order of best CPU performance.

As expected, the laptops with the latest Intel Core i9 (H-series) processors topped the list, followed by those with Core i7 CPUs. With blistering performance offered by its Core i9-9900K CPU and a supercomfortable keyboard, the Origin PC’s Eon17-X is an outstanding laptop for gamers or creators. That said, the laptop’s screen is very dim, so we recommend buying a monitor while you’re plunking down several thousands of dollars on this beast. Why FPS as Benchmarks?

FPS are a great metric to measure a CPU’s strengths. Gamers use it as benchmarks as it gives clear estimates about its performance. It shows you how a CPU handles the graphics, its encoding and decoding, engines that run the game, and ray-tracing.

Since a game puts different engines into work and stresses the CPU in various ways, you can’t just only look into the game’s algorithms’ rendering speed, compression, MIPS, or decoding time. The FPS works best to understand the CPU’s power whilst handling a game.

For example, a CPU manages a lot of things whilst running a game. If it is handling all the tasks well, like animations, character’s movement, surrounding world, NPCs, etc, you observe smooth FPS. But when it throttles in any task the CPU drops its FPS to minimize its work.

So, the average FPS that you get throughout a game would give a better insight into CPU performance. If it manages to maintain the frames per second, it means the CPU is powerful enough to perfectly handle the game. So, you need to look for CPUs with higher FPS as it means that the processor is more powerful and can handle more tasks at once.

Below I have listed 15 games of which I have frames per second in low and high-end settings to give you an idea of what kind of range a CPU can perform well in. The lower FPS scores table is in 1080p resolution with low settings to give you estimations of the maximum potential of CPU. The second FPS scores table is in 4K resolution and ultra settings, so you can understand how much power a CPU has. These scores are with the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. This is done to stop the GPU from causing any bottlenecks. Let’s start benchmarking:

  • Red Dead Redemption 2

  • First on our list is Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). It is an open-world awesome game by Rockstar Games, launched in 2018. Till now, it has been marvellous in entertaining hardcore and casual gamers. It is set in the Western 19th century.

    8 Ways to Test Your Computer’s Performance

    There are three things you can look at endlessly: flowing water, a burning fire, and… a spinning Windows cursor. Yes, if the computer is not distinguished by “mind” and performance, it will take a long time to contemplate the green (or blue) wheel while waiting for programs to start.

    Productivity (speed) of a PC is a multifaceted and relative concept. To help us figure out whether it is sufficient, many tests and evaluations have been devised. But the final conclusions can only be drawn by a person — the user.

    Types of PC performance evaluation

    To check the performance of your computer and give it a subjective assessment, be guided, first of all, by your own feelings.

    Your PC or laptop is powerful enough if:

    • It loads quickly and shuts down the operating system.
    • Installed applications and games start without a long wait.
    • You can use as many programs as you want (within reason), work with files of any size and not experience discomfort from delays. Slowdowns due to peripherals or low internet speeds don’t count.

    Failure to meet at least one of these conditions indicates insufficient computer power for specific tasks. But this does not always mean that the device is weak. Compared to others, it can be much more powerful and faster.

    The performance of computer equipment is assessed by two different approaches:

    • According to the correspondence of hardware and software capabilities to the tasks for which the device is used or intended.
    • Compared to reference (benchmarking). A device with a conditionally “ideal” speed is taken as a standard when performing laboratory operations (synthetic and semi-synthetic tests) that are close to real work on a PC. Benchmark testing shows how much the tested computer is faster or, conversely, slower than the reference one. As benchmarks, programs specially designed for this purpose are used, as well as ordinary applications and games loaded with test work (playing videos, scripts, etc.). The results of the test are evaluated by the number of points scored or real values, for example, the speed of data exchange between the processor and memory in Mb / s.

    Performance evaluation can be carried out both for individual devices, for example, only processors or hard drives, or comprehensively for the entire system. In a comprehensive assessment of the level of PC performance, it is customary to consider the average of all its components, and in some cases, the weakest link.

    How to evaluate the speed of your computer on the fly

    In the era of Windows 7, it was a piece of cake to find out how powerful the device you have on your desk or store counter was. It was enough to open its Control Panel, go to the «System Properties» section — and here they are, the cherished numbers.

    Windows 10 does not have this feature, but there are third-party apps that successfully replace it. These are free WSAT and Winaero WEI Tool.

    Both utilities work without installation on the computer and give the same results. To find out the performance index according to Windows calculations, you just need to run them.

    Comparison and verification of processor characteristics

    All characteristics of a particular processor can be viewed on the official website of the manufacturer. After installing the processor in your computer, see if the characteristics correspond to the declared ones.

    Open the classic Task Manager (relevant for the latest versions of Windows 10). Go to Performance > CPU (Central Processing Unit).

    Compare processor specifications. For example, look at the base frequency and the current operating speed. Check the number of physical kernels and log. streams. Additionally, you can view the characteristics of the processor in the BIOS or UEFI.

    BrowserBench.org

    The BrowserBench.org service is designed to evaluate the overall performance of computers and mobile devices by the speed of performing certain operations in the browser.

    BrowserBench also includes 3 test suites:

    • JetStream 2 is a set of JavaScript and WebAssembly algorithms for diagnosing browser performance when running modern web applications. It reflects the combined speed of the processor, graphics and RAM.
    • MotionMark is a graphics system benchmark that measures browser performance when animating complex scenes at a given frame rate.
    • Speedometer — The job of this test is to measure the responsiveness of web applications by simulating user actions. It serves to evaluate the performance of all major computer systems.

    Speed-Battle

    Speed-Battle is another popular online tool for evaluating PC performance by browsing. It can be used to determine:

    • Which of the installed web browsers is the fastest.
    • Which operating system is faster when using the same computer and browser.
    • Which computer runs faster when using the same operating system and browser.

    There is only one set of tests. Its result is displayed without much detail in a small pivot table. Under it are the average, maximum and minimum indicators among all users of the service.

    HeavyLoad

    HeavyLoad measures the performance of the processor at maximum load. In addition, you can use the program to test the graphics processor (i.e. video card) and RAM.

    How to use the HeavyLoad program

    1. Start the program, open the Test Options section in the menu.
    2. Select Stress CPU.
    3. Click the Play — Start selected tests icon.
    4. Wait for test results.

    In the HeavyLoad settings, you can specify the number of cores to test and the priority.

    The best applications for checking PC performance

    Checking using online services is convenient because it is simple and does not require additional steps for downloading, installing, etc. However, according to experienced people, it is not particularly accurate and is very limited in set tools.

    Specialized programs that are installed on a disk or run from a USB flash drive, allow for accurate, narrowly targeted testing of individual subsystems and computer devices. In addition to measuring performance, they provide an opportunity to obtain information about the characteristics of iron, its condition, health, serviceability, and even identify some problems.

    Aida64: A multifaceted assessment of system parameters and stability

    Aida64 is perhaps one of the most, if not the most popular PC hardware information gathering program with testing functions (benchmarking, stability). It is available in several paid editions, two of which — Engineer and Extreme, contain the functionality we are interested in.

    The Aida64 test suite includes:

    • Disk Benchmark is a collection of hard drive, SSD, RAID evaluation algorithms.
    • Cache & Memory Benchmark — cache and memory speed estimation algorithms.
    • GPGPU Benchmark — graphics system benchmark.
    • Monitor Diagnostics — monitor diagnostic test.
    • Reading from memory.
    • Write to memory.
    • Memory copy.
    • Delays in memory.
    • CPU Queen, CPU ZLib, CPU AES, CPU PhotoWorxx, FPU Julia, FPU Mandel and a number of other CPU speed tests. Explanations for them are given in the main window of Aida64 in the «Test» section.

    Maxon Cinebench — a comprehensive processor performance test

    Maxon Cinebench — a free benchmark for evaluating the performance of the latest generation of processors (with SSE3 support). Unlike analogues, this program allows you to test the full functionality of the CPU in the process of rendering three-dimensional scenes generated by the Cinema 4D engine. For comparison: the majority of benchmarks use abstract synthetic tests that allow you to evaluate only individual processor functions.

    The current version of the benchmark — Cinebench R23, tests the performance of both all and one core. The minimum duration of the test can be set manually in the program settings.

    Maxon Cinebench has an English-language, but rather simple interface: to start the test, just press the «Start» button, to stop — «Stop». Because rendering 3D images puts a lot of stress on the CPU, it’s a good idea to control CPU heat.

    To minimize the influence of background processes on the test results, the benchmark developers recommend running it in command line mode. Launch parameters are given on the official product page.

    Although the benchmark uses a graphics scene, Maxon Cinebench does not evaluate graphics card performance.     Approximately once every few years, games appear whose system requirements can be summed up in the laconic phrase “you need a top PC”. If some computers are capable of running such a product at maximum settings, then they are only absurdly expensive. And sometimes it takes years for the next generation of video cards and processors to somehow begin to cope with the game. Together with ASUS, we recalled such projects: some of them are new, others are more than ten years old, but even taking into account their age, they can get on the nerves of an average gaming computer.

    Crysis

    The German studio Crytek became famous for its high-tech shooters. It all started with Far Cry, which impressed with its sunsets and lush greenery of the jungle. Then the rights to the franchise were transferred to Ubisoft, and Crytek took up a new product — Crysis. For the game, the company wrote its own CryEngine engine, which gave gamers a lot of problems.

    The fact is that at the time of the release of the game in 2007, there was literally no computer that could show Crysis the way it looked on promotional screenshots. It was a constant compromise: you set the quality of textures and effects to «very high» — get ready to give in to anti-aliasing and draw distance or twist other visual settings. In fact, it all came down to finding acceptable parameters when the game looks beautiful and at the same time shows at least 30 frames per second. In the case of low and medium picture settings, everything was fine, but the Crysis feature is in an amazing physical model and phenomenal graphics.

    The game itself, oddly enough, is not that much of a success: yes, it has a free world with the ability to independently plan and carry out an attack, different game situations, but at the same time a primitive plot and the absence of bright choreographed moments. By the way, Crytek fixed this in the second and third parts of Crysis — also real benchmarks for hardware. But still, Crysis is a unique game: even 14 years after the release, it looks decent.

    Cyberpunk 2077

    Released at the end of last year, «long-term», to put it mildly, did not turn out as gamers expected. The point is in the disgusting state of the game: a ton of bugs, constant freezes and crashes, poor balance and terrible optimization — it seems that this has not happened since Gothic 3. Nevertheless, Cyberpunk 2077 is an excellent adventure for dozens of hours, a game with CD Projekt RED signature style, great character and story development. It is also a new benchmark for the coming years.

    The game uses newfangled ray tracing technology, which adds to the load on the system. The recommended requirements for playing at maximum settings at 4K resolution are impressive: Core i7 or Ryzen 5 3600, a GeForce 2080 RTX or Radeon RX6800 XT video card with 8 GB of video memory, 16 GB of RAM. Imagine such a car? Now keep in mind that these are the recommended requirements without ray tracing. For this technology, a video card no worse than GeForce RTX 3070 is recommended.

    As a reward for such a computer, Cyberpunk 2077 will delight you with chic views of Night City: dazzling neon signs, a beautiful play of light and shadow, and high detail of the environment. True, this does not save you from bugs, but the visual component of the action movie is really worthy of the highest rating.

    Company of Heroes

    The Canadians from Relic Entertainment in 2006 released a spectacular World War II strategy game that could easily take down a very powerful PC. Now the recommended requirements seem ridiculous: 3 GHz processor, GeForce 6800 level video card with 256 MB of memory, 1 GB of RAM. But for real 60 frames per second, and even on a large monitor, the hardware should ideally be even more powerful. And don’t forget: the game came out 15 years ago.

    Company of Heroes impressed with the detail: here we are looking at the battlefield from a height, where fighters are the size of ants, and then with a long scroll of the mouse wheel we are already examining infantrymen in close-up — and they are drawn almost like in medium-sized shooters. Such tricks required very productive hardware.

    Perhaps, at that time, only the Total War series could produce a comparable level of picture in strategies, but Company of Heroes wins due to its entertainment. Traced bullets, juicy explosions, voluminous smoke from burning vehicles, beautiful destructibility of shelters — Relic Entertainment has embodied the real Hollywood in the game.

    Resident Evil Village

    The new part of the horror Resident Evil continued the line of the previous game. The protagonist Ethan Winters this time finds himself in a Romanian village, in which something is clearly going on. The game alternates many locations: a village, a castle, swamps, dungeons, a factory — and they all look great, and the same can be said about monsters: the creatures look disgusting in a good way. All this entailed serious system requirements.

    Full HD 60fps Resident Evil Village requires Intel Core i7 8700 or AMD Ryzen 53600, AMD Radeon RX 5700 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card, 16GB RAM. But there is an addition to these requirements: fps can sag in saturated scenes. Moreover, the game supports ray tracing, and for this technology, prepare a GeForce RTX 2070 or Radeon RX6700 XT. Such requests make Village one of the most demanding games on hardware.

    S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl

    The legendary «long-term construction» also became a regular guest in iron performance tests in the second half of the 2000s. Minimum S.T.A.L.K.E.R. were at first glance divine: a processor with a frequency of 2 GHz, 512 MB of RAM, a 128 MB video card. But here, as in the case of Crysis, the game reveals itself only at high graphics settings: the zone becomes especially gloomy and ominous, the artifacts look more bewitching, and the thunderclouds above the abandoned research institutes look so cool! However, this required a computer of a completely different level.

    The X-Ray engine was announced back in 2001, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. came out in 2007. Despite a decent age for the engine, X-Ray showed a very decent picture. Most of the technical issues were due to bugs, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ruled patches and in general quickly brought to mind. In addition, a powerful fan community helped: it’s not a problem to find mods with improved textures, effects, and so on. As for the game itself, now the shooter, although it is perceived as outdated, but causes an attack of nostalgia regularly. And judging by the trailer of the second part, the developers from GSC Game World will put pressure on “return my 2007”.

    Project CARS 2

    Races are almost equal in quality of graphics with the broadcasts of real car competitions. If on consoles the picture standards are set by Gran Turismo and Forza (although it is already on the PC), then on computers there is another top series — Project CARS. An important note right away: this is a game for real motorsport fans who, with a happy smile, are ready to monotonously wind dozens of laps around the track, avoiding collisions and violations of the rules. If you are used to something like FlatOut, this is definitely not for you.

    Project CARS 2 shows excellent detailing of cars and tracks, and also works out the effects great — which is worth only the most beautiful voluminous raindrops on the body. It’s not even appropriate to talk about the quality of the cars themselves: amazing workmanship down to the smallest detail. Unfortunately, the price to pay for this is the system requirements. The game requires a Core Intel i7 6700K, a GeForce 1080 GTX graphics card, and 16 GB of RAM. If you’re planning to run Project CARS 2 at 4K resolution, then prepare an even more powerful graphics card.

    Red Dead Redemption 2

    Rockstar’s sequel to the western appeared according to the company’s usual scheme: first the version for consoles, and then for the PC — with an improved picture. The graphics even on the previous generation consoles in the game are more than tolerable, and Rockstar manages to optimize their products well. In the case of computers, the situation is generally the same, but the hardware requirements for the game are very high.

    The game is especially CPU finicky: Core i7 4770K or Ryzen 5 1500X recommended. The requirements for the video card are slightly weaker: the GeForce GTX 1060 will do, but something more modern is better. And add to this 12 GB of RAM, and in order to be completely sure of stable fps at high resolution and maximum settings, 16 GB will not be superfluous.

    But it all pays off, because Red Dead Redemption 2 is not only one of the best games of recent years, but also one of the most beautiful. You can endlessly look at the rider galloping into the sunset, whose horse raises a column of dust, at atmospheric saloons with an abundance of details and at the most beautiful cities that are filled with life.

    Hitman 2

    Stealth action with format change only got better: huge locations allow you to complete missions for hours, discovering more and more new ways to «solve the issue» that cannot be resolved without Agent 47. The game is very measured, thoughtful and requires a lot of attention, although you can get an assault rifle in the old fashioned way and kill everyone in a row. However, this is not held in high esteem here: aerobatics is to complete a mission without ever arousing the suspicions of the guards and killing only the target, and not with a shot or a noose, but by rigging an accident (say, a chandelier suddenly falls on a person or he, as it were, accidentally drinks poison instead of guilt).

    The system requirements of the game are solid. A powerful processor of the level Intel Core i7 4790 with a frequency of 4 GHz, GeForce GTX 1070 or Radeon RX Vega 56 with 8 GB of video memory and as much as 16 GB of RAM is recommended. At 4K resolution, even this may not be enough. But during the game, there are no questions about where so many computer resources go: in Hitman 2 there is excellent lighting without unnatural glare, high-quality character models, detailed environments.

    It’s been a while since we mentioned such a good old AMD Athlon X4 860K back in 2014. This processor probably still works for someone in home or work computers and performs various tasks. And someone, perhaps, is only eyeing something from this series on the used market to use as the basis for a budget build. Well, let’s find out what this 4-core is capable of in 2022 using the example of 20 modern games.

    First of all, it is worth recalling what kind of beast this is — Athlon X4 860K. The processor is designed for the FM2+ platform. It has four cores based on the Kaveri architecture, structurally very similar to the blocks in AMD’s FX line of processors.

    Namely, they have a modular layout with dual FPU and separate ALUs. The solution is ambiguous and has a lot of shortcomings. For example, there is a difficulty with the efficient parallelization of tasks on all 4 available threads.

    The main difference between Athlon X4 860K and FX is the absence of the 3rd level cache, which is very important for this platform. However, the architecture itself is a bit fresher and even supports PCI Express 3.0. Other parameters are as follows: process technology — 28 nm, frequency — from 3.7 to 4 GHz, total level 2 cache — 4 MB, TDP — 95 watts. The processor has support for DDR3 memory up to 2133 MHz and even faster if you’re lucky. And the unlocked multiplier allows for further overclocking.

    We will test the processor in the following system and, looking ahead, we note that it is not even close to being the optimal budget compilation. The components are selected so that the processor works at its maximum level, and it is convenient for us to assemble and test.

    The ASRock Fatal1ty FM2A88X+ Killer became the «house» for the Athlon X4 860K. This is a 2013 gaming solution based on the AMD A88X chipset, which stands out with a good 4 + 2-phase power subsystem, so the board offers good overclocking capabilities.

    For CPU cooling, which we are planning to overclock, we have chosen Pan’s Corsair iCUE h250i Elite Capellix RGB liquid cooling system. Its three 120mm fans are not only beautiful due to RGB LEDs, but also reliable — they are based on a magnetic levitation bearing. No wonder Corsair gives it a 5-year warranty.

    The 16 GB RAM was equipped with two G.Skill Trident X DDR3-2400 sticks. In stock, we ran it at 1600 MHz, and entrusted the selection of timings to automation. In overclocking, we chose an XMP profile with a frequency of 2400 MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31.

    In order not to run into the graphics subsystem in any case, we took the top-end video card Sapphire Radeon RX 6900 XT NITRO + SE . The video memory on it is as much as 16 GB, how much, how much RAM is in our test bench.

    Games were launched from the 2-terabyte Patriot Burst Elite , the performance of which turned out to be even higher than the declared ones — about 560 MB / s for reading and a little more than 500 MB / s for writing. Under ideal conditions, of course.

    The Corsair RM750x White 9 power supply was trusted to power the system with confidence0027 with a power of 750 watts. It has an 80 PLUS gold certification and over 90% efficiency, and is equipped with all-Japanese capacitors. Whoever watches our PSU reviews knows that this indicates a high reliability of the element base.

    Everything «pieces of iron» sheltered the case Corsair 5000D Tempered Glass White , made in the Mid-Tower format. The model is very large and heavy, but at the same time quite spacious and functional. The organization of cable management deserves special praise. Yes, and the 360-mm «dropsy» has become, like a native, on the top panel.

    Separately, we want to note the gaming mouse, with which pixels were driven around the screen. This is an updated version of the famous Endgame Gear XM1 — XM1R Dark Frost . The novelty received a translucent case, pleasant and fast Kailh GM 8.0 switches and a sensor with a sensitivity from 50 to 19000 dpi. And to make sliding like clockwork, Endgame also has its own gaming mats, for example, MPC-450 Cordura .

    Now overclocking, because the processor supports it. After short experiments, it was possible to stabilize the system by the following values:

    • the bus multiplier was set to 43, due to which the core frequency was increased to 4300 MHz;
    • the voltage was fixed at 1.45 V;
    • the northbridge frequency was raised to 2000 MHz at 1.43 V;
    • enabled the XMP memory profile at 2400 MHz.

    And now, in order to evaluate the bonuses from these manipulations, let’s make a mini-comparison in 4 synthetic and 3 game benchmarks.

    V CPU- Z Benchmark overclocking improved AMD Athlon X4 860K performance by 13% in single-threaded mode and 15% in multi-threaded.

    Geekbench 5.4.5 estimated the improvement at about the same relative units — 13% and 12% for one and many cores, respectively.

    But CineBench R23 was better able to open Athlon in multithreading. After overclocking, the results improved by 32%. In single-threaded mode, the increase correlates with other benchmarks — 15%.

    And finally, working with memory in AIDA64 . Reading and copying became faster by 29% and 44% respectively. The recording, one might say, remained at the same level — an improvement of only 5%, and the speed of memory access, or latency, improved by 16%.

    Therefore, on average, overclocking in synthetics accelerated the system by 16%. Now let’s see how much it will be in games.

    Assassin’ s Creed: Valhalla launched in Full HD resolution with «Low» graphics settings. Render left at 100%. If you look at the dry numbers, the difference does not seem to be significant. For example, the average fps was 54, but it became 66. But in relative units, this is a 22% increase. The minimum drawdown, that is, the 0.1% Low indicator, improved by almost 30%. And this is already a noticeable acceleration!

    In Cyberpunk 2077, also selected the «Low» graphics preset. Again, if you look at the situation in general, the bonus is excellent. Rare events improved from 12 to 17 fps, and average frame rate improved from 36 to 47 fps. This is a 30% increase.

    Forza Horizon 5 , with the same «low» settings, pleased with about the same results. Overclocking the processor improved the average frequency by 27% and tightened the drawdown by 15%.

    To recap. Overclocking the Athlon X4 860K improved performance in synthetics, that is, work tasks, by an average of 16% and by about 25% in games. This is a great result! Although with a certain amount of luck and straight hands, you can get a little more. So, if the system components allow, be sure to use this option.

    We leave the system in overclocking and look forward to the main dish — a gameplay test in 20 modern and relevant games in popular Full HD. We have no doubt that all of them will be launched, because Athlon X4 860K, despite its 8 years, supports all the necessary technologies and instructions. But will it be possible to get a beautiful picture and an acceptable gameplay? That’s the intrigue!

    Starting with Apex Legends at maximum graphics settings on the Olympus map. I did not like the first match at all because of the constant twitching, which sometimes gave way to subfreezes. All in all, it’s very frustrating to play.

    But we decided to try again and there was no limit to our surprise. The average frame rate has changed from 56 to 76 fps, and the drawdown has changed from 20 to 30 fps. Thus, if you go to more than one “skating rink” and have a little patience, you can play, and even with maximum graphics. In this case, it is desirable to activate the frame rate limit at 60 fps or enable V-Sync, which stabilizes the smoothness of the video sequence.

    First time in Assassin Creed: Valhalla ran around the Ravenstrop location with minimal graphics settings. Well, how we ran, running is, by definition, a continuous process. And when your character hangs in the air for a second or two, this is a different discipline. In general, seriously, the processor does not have enough power to pull up assets in a timely manner, so the game pauses while it goes about its business.

    Unsurprisingly, the game experience can be improved by limiting the frame rate to 30 fps. Plus, enable «Ultra» graphics, if the video card allows. Seems like the numbers have dropped a lot. For example, rare events from 33 to 22 fps and the frame time graph are terrible. But there is a big «BUT»! The processor finally has time, and the game goes on without «pauses». Of course, I want more smoothness, but it’s a sin to complain about the almost stable 30 fps and the most beautiful picture. 8 years ago we would have called this cool console gameplay.

    Battlefield 2042 launched in «Conquest» mode for 128 players on the lowest chart. With this game, we had a short conversation. Such an online Athlon X4 860K simply does not pull, with any settings and all our attempts.

    B C oD: Warzone tricked us into an approximately low level of graphics, but the resolution of textures and shadows, as well as anti-aliasing, were left at the maximum. This is the best that we managed to squeeze out of the processor’s capabilities. At first, the drawdown matches were the largest — up to 19k / s. Then they decreased and the frequency stabilized at 40 fps. However, the twitches still remained, plus there were some problems with the sound. In general, it is unpleasant to play, but it is possible. Unfortunately, any limits, V-Sync and simplification of settings do not improve the situation.

    In Cyberpunk 2077, didn’t want to bully the 8 year old Athlon too much, so they stayed on the low preset. You can only play if you really want to. For comparison, if you played Crysis on a GeForce 6600 GT with 128 MB of video memory, you can do it here too. After all, despite the miserable indicators of monitoring and drawdowns up to 11 fps, the control is quite obedient.

    Deathloop managed to roam with high graphics and relatively comfortable gameplay. Yes, sometimes there are frame rate dips up to 24 fps, but on average we have 38 fps. In general, the picture is quite smooth, and the controls are obedient.

    The choice of high quality graphics in Dying Light 2 surprisingly did not make the processor «bo-bo». In the first few minutes, the game caches the necessary data, which makes it a little dull. Then everything passes and the average frame rate balances around 91 fps is a great result. The only thing to consider is that there are unpleasant subfreezes at the junction of locations.

    Continues the successful streak for Athlon Dota 2 on medium graphics. At first she twitches a little, but then goes without nuances. The gameplay is comfortable, and the average frame rate is over 60 fps, with drawdowns in the region of 40 during heavy fights. Monitoring caught somewhere around 24 fps at 0.1% Low, but this is indeed a very rare event.

    Escape From Tarkov launched in PvE mode and graphics on «Ultra». On the Shoreline map. It is pleasant to play, there are almost no freezes, and the control is excellent. On average, monitoring counted 54 fps with a minimum of 0.1% low — 36 fps. When switching from «Ultra» to «High» graphics, you can add 2-4 more frames.

    But in Far Cry 6 our Athlon sharply cuts off the positive mood with any graphics settings. There is no point in looking for a balance of beauty and smoothness. There is neither one nor the other — the processor does not pull.

    It’s good that there is Forza Horizon 5 , which allows you to hit the pedals with slippers and turn on the «High» level of graphics. Of course, somewhere unpleasant little things can suddenly pop up, like drunken pedestrians at night, but in general everything is fine. On average, 75 fps and somewhere sometimes slips 25 fps.

    And there is an option to go up to «Ultra» graphics. The game becomes a little more beautiful and sometimes less smooth — 65 and 20 fps, respectively. The choice is yours.

    Fortnite and «High» graphics preset with 100% render scale. Not bad, very good… from the second match. Let’s say right away that in this case you can not look at the indicator of 0.1%. The closest to reality is the average fps, and it is excellent — the processor manages to cook about 70 frames per second. It was thought that the frequency limit or V-Sync equalizes 0.1%, but nothing changes. So don’t worry and play calmly.

    God of War is nuanced, but still playable with the Original preset. The gameplay is relatively convenient, at least when exploring locations and when fighting a couple of monsters. With the sensitivity of the control, everything is basically fine, except that sometimes the camera reacts too quickly to mouse movement. If you need more stability, you can limit the frame rate to 30 fps.

    Multiplayer Halo Infinite paired with the Athlon X4 860K violates the laws of physics and encroaches on Einstein’s theory of relativity. The fact is that with «Ultra» graphics, the performance is better than with «Low». Of the negative — only shaking camera. Is this how the developers intended it, or lags? Who plays Halo — unsubscribe, is this normal?

    On «Ultra» 0.1% was 29 fps, and on «Low» it was almost half that. At the same time, for some reason, the game actively starts pulling data from the drive. The Covenant must have staged a diversion.

    Hitman 3 can be played with «High» graphics. On average, it will be 45 fps, and in places where there are a large number of NPCs, you can observe a drawdown below 30 fps. Given the slow pace of the gameplay, this is quite forgivable.

    For PUBG , the “folk” preset is the most optimal, namely low settings plus anti-aliasing and textures on “Ultra”. Although the gameplay is not very comfortable due to constant slowdowns and twitching of the video sequence. On the record, it’s not particularly noticeable, but when you play — there is a difference. For an online battle royale game, however, this is a critical moment. But perhaps not for everyone — an average of 75 fps.

    Rainbow Six: Siege traditionally does not fail. Even with «Ultra» graphics and 100% render scale. There are a handful of blunts at first, but they quickly disappear like an advance at the beginning of the month. As a result, an average of 128 fps, smooth video sequence and excellent control.

    Improved «engine» and «high» graphics is a good choice for Warframe . Here, as with PUBG, there is a feeling of constant micro-jerks. Therefore, despite the nice picture and cool average fps, the situation is as follows: in general, it is quite comfortable to play, but we assume that weak twitches can distract someone.

    Surprisingly, Resident Evil 8: Village started up fine with «Maximum» graphics settings. At first, of course, there were some little things, but at the 19th game you no longer pay attention to this — we saw it and we know what will happen. An average of 72 l / s and precise control.

    And another beautiful project that made me happy in the end — Rust . With «maximum» settings, it ran fine at 52 fps on average. The 0.1% low indicator does not look very accurate, but in fact everything is quite ok — it does not hurt your eyes. The only doubt creeps into the account of the fullness of the server. Maybe everything is so good, because he is only a third killed?

    Conclusions

    Well, 20 games are over, some of which were launched primarily for sporting interest. Now let’s move on to the conclusions. With the Athlon X4 860K processor, the monitoring numbers don’t always match the live gameplay experience. Therefore, this time I want to try a new evaluation template for weak processors and video cards. Write in the comments — leave it or not?

    So, we divided all 20 games into three groups:

    • The first one is «Bad». It makes no sense to run this game with any settings at all;
    • The second — «Perhaps like it.» The game goes well, but there are nuances, such as minor slowdowns, which are not suitable for everyone;
    • Third — «Good.» The game runs smoothly, has a cool picture, smooth gameplay and sensitive controls.

    So, in the red zone we have only 3 games — «Battle», Warzone and Far Cry 6. In the yellow zone — 6, and in the green — 11.

    It turns out that this 8-year-old processor, with not the coolest overclocking , perfectly pulls most of the projects and potentially allows you to play most modern and sometimes very demanding games. Therefore, if you already have a processor of this series, you can be friends with it, especially if you slightly speed up the memory and increase its volume or replace the video card. And for those who plan to assemble a super-budget system — a note option. If all your favorite games are in the green zone, the processor will not become a bottleneck, at least in overclocking. Moreover, these conclusions are relevant for the entire FM2+ platform with older models both without and with an integrated video core.
