This is a very volatile time for Intel. In an ARM-less vacuum, Intel’s Haswell architecture would likely be the most amazing thing to happen to the tech industry in years. In mobile Haswell is slated to bring about the single largest improvement in battery life in Intel history. In graphics, Haswell completely redefines the expectations for processor graphics. There are even some versions that come with an on-package 128MB L4 cache. And on the desktop, Haswell is the epitome of polish and evolution of the Core microprocessor architecture. Everything is better, faster and more efficient.
There’s very little to complain about with Haswell. Sure, the days of insane overclocks without touching voltage knobs are long gone. With any mobile-first, power optimized architecture, any excess frequency at default voltages is viewed as wasted power. So Haswell won’t overclock any better than Ivy Bridge, at least without exotic cooling.
You could also complain that, for a tock, the CPU performance gains aren’t large enough. Intel promised 5 — 15% gains over Ivy Bridge at the same frequencies, and most of my tests agree with that. It’s still forward progress, without substantial increases in power consumption, but it’s not revolutionary. We compare the rest of the industry to Intel’s excellent single threaded performance and generally come away disappointed. The downside to being on the top is that virtually all improvements appear incremental.
The fact of the matter is that the most exciting implementations of Haswell exist outside of the desktop parts. Big gains in battery life, power consumption and even a broadening of the types of form factors the Core family of processors will fit into all apply elsewhere. Over the coming weeks and months we’ll be seeing lots of that, but today, at least in this article, the focus is on the desktop.
Gallery: Intel Haswell Launch Gallery
Haswell is Intel’s second 22nm microprocessor architecture, a tock in Intel’s nomenclature. I went through a deep dive on Haswell’s Architecture late last year after IDF, but I’ll offer a brief summary here.
At the front end of the pipeline, Haswell improved branch prediction. It’s the execution engine where Intel spent most of its time however. Intel significantly increased the sizes of buffers and datastructures within the CPU core. The out-of-order window grew, to feed an even more parallel set of execution resources.
Intel added two new execution ports (8 vs 6), a first since the introduction of the Core microarchitecture back in 2006.
On the ISA side, Intel added support for AVX2, which includes an FMA operation that considerably increases FP throughput of the machine. With a doubling of peak FP throughput, Intel doubled L1 cache bandwidth to feed the beast. Intel also added support for transactional memory instructions (TSX) on some Haswell SKUs.
The L3 cache is now back on its own power/frequency plane, although most of the time it seems to run in lockstep with the CPU cores. There appears to be a 2 — 3 cycle access penalty as a result of decoupling the L3 cache.

Our goal is to find out what the maximum you can get from this platform. To do this, let’s look at the processor in stock, then speed up and compare with a cheaper alternative — the younger Core i5-4690K without overclocking and the Xeon E3 1240 V3. Because not everyone has boards that are compatible with overclocking and the ability to take 2400 MHz for RAM. How much power is wasted then? Maybe it makes no sense to look at the Core i7, but is it better to look for a server Xeon?

Test Xeon E3-1240 v3 against Core i7-4770K. Intel LGA1150 platform in 2022 GECID.com.
>2022
> Test Xeon E3-1240 v3 vs. Core i7-4770K. Intel LGA1150 platform in 2022
So what is this Core i7-4770K gem? With the configuration of cores and threads, it’s clear — 4 by 8. The maximum frequency is 3.9 GHz, TDP — 84 W, third-level cache — 8 MB. The main trump card is the ability to overclock and the ability to work with DDR3 memory at an increased frequency — from the recommended 1600 MHz to 2400 MHz. Which in combination gives a noticeable acceleration.
The Xeon E3 1240 V3 is an almost complete copy of the Core i7-4770K for the average user. The only thing is that the server processor offers a 100 MHz lower frequency and does not have an integrated video core. The price is a third less. And sometimes Xeon runs at a lower voltage and a little colder. The main thing is to find a normal living «stone». Most of the processors for the retro cycle were obtained from tera-flops.com.ua. Shop with new and also tested used hardware, which comes with a great warranty. For example, on the CPU — 1 year.
Yes, the results of the 4-core Core i5-4690K in stock from the previous review were added to this comparison. So that you can visually appreciate the difference from adding 4 virtual threads and overclocking.
Overclocking Core i7-4770K
In search of the maximum frequency:
- Raised the multiplier to 45;
- Activated XMP profile for RAM, which gave 2400 MHz;
- Fixed voltage at 1.4 V;
- And set CPU Load-Line Calibration to Level 1.
After that, the Core i7 ran steadily at 4.5 GHz across all cores and threads. We tried to take 4.6 GHz, but we could not find a reliable configuration of settings for our system.
When running two stress tests, the CPU temperature rose to 92°C. And power consumption has grown to 132 watts. Too much, but there were no missed bars. And in real games, the heating will be less.
By the way, in stock, the Core i7 had a maximum of 63°C at 63W, while the Xeon had 54°C and 60W, respectively. Next, we look at where we packed the “stones”, how they cooled and how they generally worked.
Test stand
The ASRock Z97 Extreme6 motherboard withstood the increased requirements for processor power and RAM frequency.
To prevent the hot 8 threads from boiling, CPU cooling was entrusted to be quiet! Pure Loop 2FX 360mm. Each fan has 9optimized blades that generate powerful air pressure up to 2.6 mm/h3O. She also has 18 ARGB LEDs and a convenient filling hole for adding liquid to the system.
16 GB of RAM used two sticks of 8 GB G.Skill Trident X DDR3-2400. It gave the maximum frequency only with an overclocked Core i7. The rest of the tests are at 1600 MHz to simulate a PC with an inexpensive motherboard. ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3090 Ti OC Edition with 24 GB VRAM. In addition to incredible power, it has reliable and efficient Axial-tech fans, as well as the ability to work completely silently — until the GPU reaches 50°C.
The disk subsystem was assembled from two drives. The 512 GB Kingston KC600 put the system and all the benchmarks, while the Kingston A400 put all the games in its 960 GB. Their read and write speeds are around 500 MB / s. The drives are reliable — time to fail or MTBF — 1 million hours. This is 114 years of round-the-clock work.
Seasonic Prime PX-850 provided stable and reliable power supply to the components. The difference on the main lines has a deviation of only 0.5%. And the back panel and PCB are connected by the new Seasonic technology without cables using a copper plate, which also improves the quality of the output power.
And everything was assembled in the Cougar MX660 Mesh RGB case. It is spacious, equipped with three powerful VK 120 fans and, most importantly, the front panel is completely ventilated. Lighting and transparent glass are already nice bonuses.
Comparison Xeon E3 1240 V3 vs Core i7-4770 K vs Core i5-4690 K
To understand the place Core i7-4770K against the background of more or less modern counterparts, we turn to the Cinebench R23 base we have assembled. And he looks good, especially in overclocking. For example, it outperforms the Core i3-10100 in multithreading by 9%, which also has 4 cores in 8 threads. Well, both Ryzen 3s can’t be said to have come off much.
Same benchmark but different competitors. First of all, we make sure once again that Xeon = Core i7. But in overclocking and with fast memory, the Crust is 23-24% better. And if we compare it with the stock 4-core Core i5-4690K, then the advantage of overclocked 8 threads increases to 14-54%.
3DMark Time Spy, in fact, does not see the difference between the main characters. Server / non-server — all plus or minus the statistical error. Core i7 in overclocking overtakes Xeon — by 24%, itself on the drain by 27%, Core i5 — by 53%.
7-ZIP Benchmark after overclocking Core i7 accelerates at the same level — 22-26%. Compared to the four cores of the Core i5, 61% prefer it. Excellent result!
And let’s also look at the complex PCMark 10. i7 under overclocking outperforms the Xeon by 14-27%, and the 4-core one by 18-32%.
If we sum up all the results of synthetic tests, and take the Core i5-4690K indicator at stock frequencies as 100%, we get the following numbers:
135% Core i7-4770K OC @ 4.5GHz/DDR3 2400MHz
111% Core i7-4770K Stock @ 3.5/3.9GHz/DDR3 1600MHz 900 05
110% Xeon E3-1240 v3 Stock @ 3.4/3.8 GHz/DDR3 1600 MHz
there is no sacred benefit from 4 additional virtual threads without overclocking. The stock Core i7 and Xeon outperformed the 4690K by only 10-11%. But after overclocking, the separation of the 8-stream stone noticeably increases — up to 35%.
122% Core i7-4770K OC @ 4.5 GHz/DDR3 2400 MHz
100% Xeon E3-1240 v3 Stock @ 3.4/3.8 GHz/DDR3 1600 MHz 9 0005
If you leave only these two — we have a 22% advantage on average. Given the difference in cost, the need to pump many system components and the temperature of the overclocked processor, it’s really better to save money and take the Xeon. Especially if you are thinking of resurrecting your old system or building it from used parts.
Well, with the work tasks and synthetics sorted out — now it’s time to play in Full HD resolution. This is where multithreading comes into play.
We fly into Assassin’s Creed Valhalla with Ultra High graphics. The benefit of overclocking the Core i7-4770K ranges from 10 to 25%. Xeon in this benchmark failed noticeably behind rare events, so the accelerated Core i7 outperformed it by 26-39%. The temperature of the leader, as expected, is normal … under the «dropsy» and in a good case.
Cyberpunk 2077 launched with ultra graphics without rays. The effect of overclocking is 33-41%. For example, very rare events for Core i7 and Xeon were 37-36 fps, and steel — 52 fps. This is a noticeable increase in the stability of the gameplay in some action scenes and polygon-saturated locations. Well, if you compare it with a 4-core processor, it generally has a 2-fold worse indicator of 0. 1%.
Watching Far Cry 6 with maximum picture without ray tracing. Increasing the frequency of the cores gave a 27-29% bonus. Thus, the «seventh plug» managed to bypass Xeon by 20-30% and by 37-133% Core i5-4690K at stock frequencies. Again, this is the key to a more pleasant and stable gameplay without noticeable drawdowns.
The benchmark Forza Horizon 5 with extreme graphics was less happy about the increase in i7 frequency and RAM. The difference with the stock itself and Xeon is only 9-18% on 0.1% low. Although if you look at the result of a 4-core, it’s still heaven and earth: 31 fps versus 60 fps.
For dessert, heavy artillery in the form of Total War Saga: Troy with Ultra graphics. Here, His Majesty randomly made a bandwagon to the base Core i7-4770K within the margin of error — it happens. However, the winners are not judged — overclocking put him ahead of the nearest pursuer by 20-29%.
In general, in games, the overclocking advantage of the Core i7-4770K is immediately noticeable. He outscored himself in par by 24–29% average. The frame rate stability of Cyberpunk 2077 and Total War Saga: Troy improved particularly well.
Approximately the same handicap over Xeon — 26-27% on average.
Without overclocking, these processors provide an identical level of comfort. Unless it happens in games, a restless hand interferes randomly.
As for the comparison with 4690K — you already understood. And now and according to the last review. Many Core i7 streams provide a completely different level of comfort — less twitches, jerks, faster loading of assets and, in general, a more stable video sequence. This is what directly affects the buzz from the game. And even if the 4-core driver is also overclocked, such an effect cannot be achieved.
So for games, if possible, spend money on memory, cooling, or if the system already allows it, it makes sense to overpay for the Core i7-4770K for overclocking. Together with the RAM boost, this will give a noticeable increase, both against the background of the drain and against the background of the Xeon.
If you want to save as much as possible and get the best result in terms of price-ability — Xeon definitely wins in this category. You can find it for half the price.
i7 4770K Stock |VS| Xeon E3 1240 V3 | VS | i7 4770K OC
In live gameplay
And now we turn off serious analytics and voice our impressions of real gameplay in 10 games. Now we have taken the server Xeon E3 1240 V3 and compared it with two variants of the Core i7-4770K — nominal and overclocked. For obvious reasons, in online games it was not always possible to hit one map, but we tried.
Apex Legends spread its royal canyon in front of us with maximum picture quality. So, we have already figured out the difference in numbers, it is, we measured it in percentages. But it is in this game that you cannot feel it without monitoring. Xeon with stock memory gives the same gameplay feel as an overclocked Core i7. Slight twitching can sometimes be found in all cases, but most of the time we have a very smooth video sequence, where the average frequency is well over a hundred.
In Battlefield 2042 for 128 players, the comparison turned out to be relative, because all processors got different cards. The hardest hit was the base Core i7 on the Manifesto map. With ultra-graphics, he had subsidence up to 30-35 fps. So we went down to the top. In the other two — the maximum picture. It turns out that for a couple of roller settings you will need to select and with an overclocked processor, the breadth of choice will be greater.
CoD: Warzone with maximum graphics comes with nuances. If you run on foot, there is a comfortable gameplay in all cases. If you sit behind the wheel, then sometimes there are unpleasant slowdowns, regardless of the frequency of the cores and memory. By the way, monitoring also recorded the same level of drawdowns between the stock and overclocked processors.
Dota 2 is no worse than other games — got the maximum picture quality settings. True matches are different everywhere, so the comparison is relative. Based on impressions, we can say that smoothness and subsidence are the same. In the beginning, when the warm-up or the first cast of abilities can slow down a little, but then it plays great on all stones.
In Fortnite was running at epic settings on DX12. Here again is an element that you don’t plan much. Xeon was tested last season games, and Core i7 — already in the new one, where the terrain of our route became less detailed, which could affect the results. In any case, both processors give almost the same gameplay experience — for the most part pleasant. Small blunts sometimes happen everywhere, but they are not critical.
Grand Theft Auto V 9We also look at 0004 with the highest picture. Plays comfortably on both processors, even with 1600 RAM. Most screen time is 60+ fps. Naturally, the overclocked Core i7 has the most stable and pleasing to the eye.
Multiplayer Halo Infinite with such processors can be afforded with «Ultra» graphics settings. The general impressions are again almost the same. If you turn off the monitoring and just play — that Xeon, that accelerated «crust» — are equally cool.
PUBG is notorious for being a CPU-intensive game and we often complain about it because of the constant little twitches. So this time — to Xeon and Core i7 you can make similar claims. But the overclocked «stone» in this regard is a little easier, which is also reflected by all monitoring indicators. In some moments, we have 1.5-2 times the best 0.1% Low.
Red Dead Redemption 2 does not lose the bar set by other games — the picture is at the maximum. There are practically no significant comments — the video sequence is smooth, and the controls are obedient. In what parts of the city do not stop by and do not shoot at someone with new cartridges with explosive grease. Here you can not overpay for overclocking. Xeon offers almost the same gameplay.
And finally «Sixth Rainbow: Siege» on the map «Chalet» with full rendering and ultra-settings. An overclocked processor usually performs better, but stock processors do well, even for a 144Hz monitor. For 0.1% drops below 142 fps. And so the screen is consistently above two hundred.
Conclusions
Of course, if your goal is to get the most out of the LGA 1150 platform, there is a motherboard charged for overclocking, memory takes 2400 MHz and good processor cooling, the Core i7-4770K will be an excellent choice.
In games, it is faster than the face value and Xeon by 27-29%. Especially in difficult projects, this further stabilizes the frame rate and improves the smoothness of the picture. True, the overpayment in this case will be many times greater than the resulting acceleration.
