The LGA775 platform (aka Socket T) reigned on the market for an unusually long time, as for Intel — from 2004 to 2009years. But the LGA1156 that replaced it (aka Socket H or h2) lasted only 2 years. During this time, the company managed to switch from the 45-nm Nehalem microarchitecture to the 32-nm Westmere, and at the same time successfully implement such a familiar and understandable naming scheme — Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7.

In addition, processors under LGA1156 received support for Hyper-Threading logical multithreading technologies, Turbo Boost dynamic overclocking and L3 cache memory (aka Smart Cache). In motherboard design, Intel got rid of the northbridge chip by integrating a 2-channel DDR3 RAM controller and 16 PCIe 2. 0 lanes into the CPU. Only the southbridge remained on the board, for communication with which the Direct Media Interface (DMI) has been used since that time. nine0003

And 32-nm representatives of the Core i3 and i5 series for the first time received an integrated video core. For this, a chiplet structure was used — under the processor cover there were two crystals: one contained the processor cores and the L3 cache, and the second contained the video core and other controllers. These are far from all the changes, but I don’t want to bore you with theory.

Let’s take a closer look at the test processor. Opens this cycle Intel Core i3-550 .

This member of the Clarkdale family with a 32nm Westmere microarchitecture appeared back in 2010 and was discontinued in 2012. It has 2 cores with 4 threads thanks to Hyper-Threading technology. Although then it was still raw. The base frequency is 3200 MHz with a thermal package of 73 watts. Dynamic acceleration is not provided — only manual. Yes, in those distant times, Intel still allowed enthusiasts such liberties.

The processor also includes a 2-channel RAM controller with support for DDR3-1333 MHz modules and an Intel HD Graphics video core with a frequency of 733 MHz. nine0003

Finding a good motherboard for LGA1156 is perhaps the main problem of this platform. If there is something suitable and in good condition, then it is quite expensive. You can take it cheaper, but without overclocking support or in a deplorable state.

We were lucky in this regard — we got the motherboard GIGABYTE GA-H55M-UD2H revision 1.3. It supports 2-channel operation of four DIMM modules with a total capacity of up to 16 GB. And even declared the possibility of overclocking to 2200 MHz. But it was with the RAM that we had problems. nine0003

The system did not want to start with 16 GB on board. First, they put four 4-gigabyte Samsung sticks against the barrier, but they successfully failed.

Then we tried our luck with a couple of 8 GB 2-rank G.SKILL TridentX, but the result is the same: the system sees the memory in the BIOS, and Windows 10 refuses to boot. Yes, what is there to boot, even the OS installation crashed. We tried to swap modules, made sure that the BIOS was the latest version, even installed the new operating system, but all in vain. nine0003

It seems that the problem is in the processor, because the RAM controller is on it. Thus, i3-550 will be tested with 8 GB kit GOODRAM LEDLIGHT DDR3-2400 . In nominal terms, it started at a frequency of 1333 MHz.

We entrusted the cooling of the processor to the 3-section dropsy Cooler Master MasterLiquid ML360P Silver Edition . Even after overclocking, the temperature of the cores only occasionally rose to 66°C, although it was usually around 60°C. There was no drop in frequency or frame skipping. nine0003

For the operating system, benchmarks and all the necessary games, two terabyte 2. 5-inch SSDs PATRIOT P200 were enough. True, they worked in SATA 2.0 mode instead of the prescribed SATA 3.0, that is, the interface bandwidth was 2 times lower.

In this case, we are testing the processor, and we didn’t want to run into the video card. Therefore, we took a model with a large margin — Palit GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER GameRock . It has 8 GB of GDDR6 memory. It is recommended to use a 650-watt power supply with it. nine0003

We have approached this task responsibly, armed with the «gold» RIOTORO ENIGMA 750WG2 with a power of 750 W. It can deliver 744 watts through a single +12V channel, which is enough for a processor and a voracious video card.

A 3-section dropsy and almost 3-slot video card over 290mm long won’t fit in every case. It’s good that during the tests we were provided with RIOTORO CR1288TG . It is suitable for EATX boards, video accelerators up to 400 mm long and 360 mm coolant radiators. nine0003

And, of course, the peripherals of the companies BRAIN and Vinga , which you have been kind to your attention, could not do without. The next 10 minutes will talk about the merits of the Vinga KBGM-395 mechanical keyboard, then switch to the Vinga MSG-868 optical mouse and finish with a full test of the Vinga MP343 mousepad. We’re joking. Go ahead.

Gameplay recorded by an external system with AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K, i.e. without performance loss. nine0003

First of all, after the launch, we studied the issue of overclocking. A lot of time was spent on the selection of memory, and it was not enough for a careful choice of parameters during overclocking; there is no certainty that «all the juices are squeezed out.»

The system bus frequency was raised to 180 MHz and the processor frequency was increased to 4320 MHz. For its stable operation, it was necessary to increase the voltage to 1. 46 V and reduce the QPI bus multiplier to 36. The rest of the parameters were entrusted to automation. The RAM frequency rose to 1800 MHz, but some timings increased and the voltage was raised to 1.66 V.

In this mode, the system passed the AIDA64 stress test without any problems. The maximum peak temperature of the cores reached 82°C, but on average it was below 70°C. There were no throttling and crashes — everything worked stably.

Synthetics also went smoothly. In the CPU-Z , the stock i3-550 is 17% faster than the APU A10-7850K in single-threaded mode and slightly inferior to it in multi-threaded mode. Overclocking improved his performance by 36%, and he dealt with his opponent without any problems. nine0003

In CineBench R15 , Core i3 results improved by a maximum of 66%. If in nominal value it was at the level of the 2-core Celeron G3930, then after overclocking it was equal to the 4-core Athlon X4 950 and slightly behind the overclocked Core 2 Quad Q6600.

Now let’s compare performance in gaming benchmarks using three popular APIs as an example. In World of Tanks EnCore RT with an average preset, overclocking adds 30-35%. You can even think about improving the quality of graphics.

DirectX 12 introduces Shadow of the Tomb Raider at the lowest preset. The performance is improved by a maximum of 40%, but the statistics of rare and very rare events are still below 24 FPS.

In Vulkan, using the example of Wolfenstein: Youngblood with a low preset, we see a similar picture: the results are improved by a maximum of 32%, which corresponds to a bonus of 5-6 FPS.

In general, overclocking adds about 30%. Although not in every case it is critically important, but one should definitely not refuse such an increase on such an ancient processor.

Until recently, there were only two desktop processors in the Intel Core i3 lineup: Intel Core i3-530 and Intel Core i3-540. In the second decade of 2010, another Intel Core i3-550 processor with a frequency of 3.2 GHz was added to them. Recall that the younger model Intel Core i3-530 has a frequency of 2.93 GHz. Actually, it is only in the frequency that the differences between the models of Intel Core i3 processors consist. The more privileged Intel Core i5 series received support for Turbo Boost technology, AES instructions to speed up the encryption algorithm, and Intel Trusted Execution Technology (Intel TXT) for enhanced security. The frequency of the Intel HD graphics core for the Intel Core i3 and Intel Core i5-6XX processors is the same and is equal to 733 MHz. The only exception is the Intel Core i5-661 processor, whose graphics core frequency is 900 MHz.

The price arrangement in the segment of mass Intel processors is rather ordered. All Intel Core i3 processors are cheaper than Intel Core i5 models. The processor Intel Core i3-550, which we are testing today, is equal in frequency to the younger model Intel Core i5-650. But due to the presence of the last row of technologies that we mentioned above, the Intel Core i5-650 is $38 more expensive. The TDP level for most Intel Core i3 and Intel Core i5 models is no higher than 73 watts. nine0003

The cooling system is supposed to be a Delta DTC-DAB03 cooler with an all-aluminum coreless heatsink. The fan has a 4-pin power connector with support for PWM economy mode.

On the cover of the Intel Core i3-550 there is a main marking that can «shed light» on the name of the model, the nominal frequency of the processor is 3. 2 GHz, the amount of cache memory is 4 MB; power requirement — PCG 09A.

All 1156 pads of the LGA1156 processor socket are present on the back of the processor. The location of the matching elements has not changed, compared with the younger models.

The Intel Core i3-550 processor belongs to the Clarkdale family, which is characterized by the presence of two crystals under the cover at once. The 32 nm process technology runs the main part of the processor with two processor cores, and the second part runs according to 45 nm standards and accommodates the GPU, memory controller and PCI Express bus controller. The crystals communicate with each other using the internal QPI bus. Moreover, the frequency of the QPI bus of Intel Core i3 processors is lower than that of the Intel Core i5 line of models — 2900 MHz vs 3200 MHz. Another difference between processors of different lines, which cannot be found out from the specification, but can be found out using the CPUZ utility. This utility also allows you to establish that our instance of the Intel Core i3-550 processor has a new revision of the K0 core. Recall that initially the processors of the Intel Core i3 series had revision C2.

You can learn more about the structural features of the Clarkdale processor family by reading the review of the Intel Core i5-661 processor .

The Intel Core i3-550 L1 cache is 64 KB per core, of which 32 KB is for data caching and the same amount for instructions. The second level cache has a capacity of 256 KB per core. The L3 cache is shared by the entire processor and its size is 4 MB.

The Intel Core i3 Dual Channel DDR3 Memory Controller is nominally capable of supporting DDR3-1066 and DDR3-1333 memory. The frequency of the memory controller, according to CPUZ, is 2130 MHz. nine0003

The integrated Intel HD graphics of the Intel Core i3-550 is 733 MHz. According to this indicator, Intel processors may differ.
