[Guide] AM4 Motherboard Comparison Table : buildapc

Hi again everyone! I’m sharing my comprehensive list of AM4-socket Motherboards (with X570 / X470 / X370 / B550 (added June 2020) / B450 / B350 / A320 chipsets). This sortable database aims to easily compare detailed specifications of all the different motherboard brands and models for AMD Ryzen CPUs (the link to the database opens to a shared Google Spreadsheet). Link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wmsTYK9Z3-jUX5LGRoFnsZYZiW1pfiDZnKCjaXyzd1o/edit#gid=2112472504

[Imgur](https://i. imgur.com/J4C4C3F.png)

Each viewer can arrange or hide any data in the table to show only the models being considered through sorting/filtering the specific features and components one is looking for in an AM4 motherboard. (General instructions on how to sort and filter the only models you wish to see and compare are mentioned in the spreadsheet).

All information found in the table were researched and verified to the best of my ability based on manufacturer’s data, user manuals, and reviews. I may update the table from time to time when new information are made available. If there are discrepancies/errors, let me know.

DEFAULT ARRANGEMENT OF THE DATABASE

When first viewed, the database is arranged in the following order of priority:

  • By Chipset: X570 —> X470 —> X370 —> B550 (added June 2020) —> B450 —> B350 —> A320

  • By Size / Form Factor: E-ATX —> ATX —> mATX —> ITX —> Thin ITX

  • By Brand (Alphabetically): Asrock -> Asus -> Biostar -> ECS -> Gigabyte -> Msi

The above data can be seen in the left-most columns. Apart from the Brand/Model Name, a few other data are included at the main left-most columns such as: Photo of the motherboard, the Year (and Quarter) when the motherboard was made available, the Price Range, and a Subjective Tier («ranking»).

PRICE RANGE

This data shows the average approximate retail cost of the motherboard, indicated by a $ symbol. The first $ symbol means the board costs around $80 or lower, while the succeeding $ symbol thereafter is equivalent to an additional $40 each symbol over and above the $80 price tag. So,

  • $ = ~$80 or lower

  • $$ = From ~$80 to ~$120

  • $$$ = From ~$120 to ~$160

  • $$$$ = From ~$160 to ~$200

  • $$$$$ = From ~$200 to ~$240, and so forth…

SUBJECTIVE TIER

This is a personal and subjective assessment on how the motherboard is «ranked» based on its features, specs, and quality compared to the models of the same brand. I have generally categorized motherboards in four (4) tiers, named and color-coded as:

  • ENTHUSIAST (Green) Models

Socket AM4: which processors are suitable

In 2016, AMD introduced a new socket that replaced AM3 and AM3+. The new socket is called Socket AM4 and is intended mainly for new RyZen processors. In this article, we will talk about what Socket AM4 is, which processors are suitable for it, and what is better to choose.

Table of Contents

Socket AM4 Overview

Socket AM4 (also known as PGA 1331) is a processor socket from AMD. This socket was introduced in 2016 and is intended for new AMD processors based on the Zen microarchitecture. However, there are also processors based on the Excavator microarchitecture for this socket. nine0003

The AM4 socket is a PGA (pin grid array) socket with 1331 pins. In addition to supporting new processors, this socket received other innovations that were not available in AMD sockets. For example, AM4 received support for DDR4 memory and processors with integrated graphics (previously, AMD had a separate socket for processors with integrated graphics).

Due to significant changes, Socket AM4 has partially lost compatibility with old cooler mounts (for AM2, FM2, AM3 and AM3+ sockets). The fastening of coolers with the help of latches and plastic inserts remains, but the location of the holes on the board has changed. Therefore, older cooling systems that are attached directly to the motherboard cannot be used for AM4. nine0003

The following chipsets are currently available for the AM4 platform: X470, X370, B450, B350, A320, X300 and A/B300. Their characteristics are shown in the table below. Processor selection for Socket AM4

The AM4 platform hasn’t grown much at the moment, so most motherboards support all available processors. However, before buying a processor or motherboard, be sure to check the list of supported processors on the official website of the motherboard manufacturer. This is the only way to be 100% sure that this board supports this processor. nine0003

To check the list of supported processors, enter the name of the motherboard into the search engine and go to the official website of the motherboard manufacturer.

Check the motherboard manufacturer’s website for a list of supported processors. Usually this list is located in the «Support — CPU» or «Support — List of processors» section.

This list will tell you which processors can be used with this motherboard. It will also indicate which BIOS version the board must have in order for the processor to work. Using this data, you can check whether this combination of processor and motherboard will work or not. nine0003

Below is a list of all processors that currently exist for Socket AM4. This list will help you navigate what generally exists for AM4.

New processors for Socket AM4

In conclusion, we note that Socket AM4 is AMD’s current socket and new processors continue to be released for it. For example, in 2019-2020, the third generation of Ryzen processors is expected to appear, which, most likely, will also be released based on the AM4 platform. Therefore, this list of processors is not final and will be updated in the future. nine0003

Which processors are suitable for socket am3 and am4

Hello, readers of my blog about hardware. In this article, I wanted to consider which processors are suitable for socket am3 and am3 +. Despite the fact that this connector from AMD was released more than 7 years ago, it is still in demand in the market, since the release of new chips for AM4 has greatly reduced the prices of FX-8xxx, which, moreover, are also chasing great.

If you want to know which processors are suitable for 1151 — you are here, and here we will consider supported products that can be put in socket am3+. We will also briefly touch on some characteristics of the chips, such as the maximum performance FX-9590 and folk FX-8300.

List of supported chips

Looking at the official statistics, AM3+ is theoretically not compatible with AM3, but older chips work fine on the newer socket without any hardware limitations in terms of overclocking. The table will include both new and old CPU models, among which you will surely find the best processor for gaming.

Vishera (32 nm):

Bulldozer (32 nm): As you can see, the FX generation has 2 incarnations that include 2 architectures, with Vishera being a modified and improved version of Bulldozer. Both options will run smoothly on any motherboard. nine0003

AM3 models are also suitable for AM3+.

Their lineup is as follows: Which processor should I choose for my PC? Try to look for the most «fresh» solution, i. e. AMDFX. Let’s say right away that the 4-core FX-4100 is not the best choice for building a system, since there are more progressive FX-8xxx, in particular the 8300, which chases up to 4.8 GHz on a 970 chipset without problems using a Zalman CNPS10 level cooling Optima or Deepcool Gammaxx 300.

You can still find new chips on sale at very attractive prices and we recommend purchasing OEM versions, as they are cheaper than BOX, and in no way inferior in performance. Here you can read about the main differences between BOX and OEM.

A few words about AM4

In 2016, a completely new processor socket for AMD Ryzen processors, AM4, was introduced to the market. Unlike the previous versions (AM3+, AM3, AM2+, AM2), this socket is completely new and is not backward compatible with obsolete red processors. However, it supports much more interesting chips that are current at the moment of 2018: The list includes models based on Zen and Zen + architecture, which are backward compatible with each other and work perfectly on motherboards with A320, B350, B450, X370 and X470 chipsets. nine0003

Optimal models

If you need the most balanced processor of the AM3 + family, then we recommend that you take a closer look at the already mentioned FX-8320 with a base frequency of 3.5 GHz, which can be easily raised to 4 in Turbo Boost, or manually wound up to 4 ,5, if there is good cooling.

Do you have a motherboard based on the top 990FX chipset? Try the FX-9590, which runs stock at 4.7 GHz and can push up to 5 GHz, but on one condition — a 220 W TDP. And this speaks of a very «hot» nature of the chip. nine0003

And now for the modern AM4 models. The best solution for an entry-level multimedia system would be the Ryzen 5 2400G with an integrated Vega 11 video core, whose performance is comparable to the GeForce 1030 GT. As a universal solution, we want to offer the Ryzen 5 1600, which has 6 cores and 12 threads, as well as a low heat pack of 65 W and excellent performance margin. This stone will provide maximum immersion in any game or program.

You just have to choose.
