Comparison Between NVIDIA GeForce and Tesla GPUs

This resource was prepared by Microway from data provided by NVIDIA and trusted media sources. All NVIDIA GPUs support general-purpose computation (GPGPU), but not all GPUs offer the same performance or support the same features. The consumer line of GeForce GPUs (GTX Titan, in particular) may be attractive to those running GPU-accelerated applications. However, it’s wise to keep in mind the differences between the products. There are many features only available on the professional Tesla and Quadro GPUs.

FP64 64-bit (Double Precision) Floating Point Calculations

Many applications require higher-accuracy mathematical calculations. In these applications, data is represented by values that are twice as large (using 64 binary bits instead of 32 bits). These larger values are called double-precision (64-bit). Less accurate values are called single-precision (32-bit). Although almost all NVIDIA GPU products support both single- and double-precision calculations, the performance for double-precision values is significantly lower on most consumer-level GeForce GPUs. FP16 16-bit (Half Precision) Floating Point Calculations

Some applications do not require as high an accuracy (e.g., neural network training/inference and certain HPC uses). Support for half-precision FP16 operations was introduced in the “Pascal” generation of GPUs. This was previously the standard for Deep Learning/AI computation; however, Deep Learning workloads have moved on to more complex operations (see TensorCores below). Although all NVIDIA “Pascal” and later GPU generations support FP16, performance is significantly lower on many gaming-focused GPUs. Here is a comparison of the half-precision floating-point calculation performance between GeForce and Tesla/Quadro GPUs:

TensorFLOPS and Deep Learning Performance

A new, specialized Tensor Core unit was introduced with “Volta” generation GPUs. It combines a multiply of two FP16 units (into a full precision product) with a FP32 accumulate operation—the exact operations used in Deep Learning Training computation. NVIDIA is now measuring GPUs with Tensor Cores by a new deep learning performance metric: a new unit called TensorTFLOPS.

Tensor Cores are only available on “Volta” GPUs or newer. For reference, we are providing the maximum known deep learning performance at any precision if there is no TensorFLOPS value. We consider it very poor scientific methodology to compare performance between varied precisions; however, we also recognize a desire to see at least an order of magnitude performance comparison between the Deep Learning performance of diverse generations of GPUs.

Error Detection and Correction

On a GPU running a computer game, one memory error typically causes no issues (e. g., one pixel color might be incorrect for one frame). The user is very unlikely to even be aware of the issue. However, technical computing applications rely on the accuracy of the data returned by the GPU. For some applications, a single error can cause the simulation to be grossly and obviously incorrect. For others, a single-bit error may not be so easy to detect (returning incorrect results which appear reasonable). Titan GPUs do not include error correction or error detection capabilities. Neither the GPU nor the system can alert the user to errors should they occur. It is up to the user to detect errors (whether they cause application crashes, obviously incorrect data, or subtly incorrect data). Such issues are not uncommon – our technicians regularly encounter memory errors on consumer gaming GPUs. NVIDIA Tesla GPUs are able to correct single-bit errors and detect & alert on double-bit errors. On the latest NVIDIA A100, Tesla V100, Tesla T4, Tesla P100, and Quadro GV100/GP100 GPUs, ECC support is included in the main HBM2 memory, as well as in register files, shared memories, L1 cache and L2 cache.

Warranty and End-User License Agreement

NVIDIA’s warranty on GeForce GPU products explicitly states that the GeForce products are not designed for installation in servers. Running GeForce GPUs in a server system will void the GPU’s warranty and is at a user’s own risk. From NVIDIA’s manufacturer warranty website:

Warranted Product is intended for consumer end user purposes only, and is not intended for datacenter use and/or GPU cluster commercial deployments (“Enterprise Use”). Any use of Warranted Product for Enterprise Use shall void this warranty.

The license agreement included with the driver software for NVIDIA’s GeForce products states, in part:

No Datacenter Deployment. The SOFTWARE is not licensed for datacenter deployment, except that blockchain processing in a datacenter is permitted.

GPU Memory Performance

Computationally-intensive applications require high-performance compute units, but fast access to data is also critical. For many HPC applications, an increase in compute performance does not help unless memory performance is also improved. For this reason, the Tesla GPUs provide better real-world performance than the GeForce GPUs:

GPU Memory Quantity

In general, the more memory a system has the faster it will run. For some HPC applications, it’s not even possible to perform a single run unless there is sufficient memory. For others, the quality and fidelity of the results will be degraded unless sufficient memory is available. Tesla GPUs offer as much as twice the memory of GeForce GPUs:

PCI-E vs NVLink – Device-to-Host and Device-to-Device Throughput

One of the largest potential bottlenecks is in waiting for data to be transferred to the GPU. Additional bottlenecks are present when multiple GPUs operate in parallel. Faster data transfers directly result in faster application performance. The GeForce GPUs connect via PCI-Express, which has a theoretical peak throughput of 16GB/s. NVIDIA Tesla/Quadro GPUs with NVLink are able to leverage much faster connectivity. The NVLink in NVIDIA’s “Pascal” generation allows each GPU to communicate at up to 80GB/s (160GB/s bidirectional). The NVLink 2.0 in NVIDIA’s “Volta” generation allows each GPU to communicate at up to 150GB/s (300GB/s bidirectional). 3rd Generation NVLink in NVIDIA’s “Ampere” generation allows each GPU to communicate at up to 300GB/s (600GB/s bidirectional). NVLink connections are supported between GPUs, between GPUs and NVIDIA NVSwitches, and also between the CPUs and the GPUs on supported OpenPOWER platforms.

Application Software Support

While some software programs are able to operate on any GPU which supports CUDA, others are designed and optimized for the professional GPU series. Most professional software packages only officially support the NVIDIA Tesla and Quadro GPUs. Using a GeForce GPU may be possible, but will not be supported by the software vendor. In other cases, the applications will not function at all when launched on a GeForce GPU (for example, the software products from Schrödinger, LLC).

Operating System Support

Although NVIDIA’s GPU drivers are quite flexible, there are no GeForce drivers available for Windows Server operating systems. GeForce GPUs are only supported on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. Groups that use Windows Server should look to NVIDIA’s professional Tesla and Quadro GPU products. The Linux drivers, on the other hand, support all NVIDIA GPUs.

Product Life Cycle

Due to the nature of the consumer GPU market, GeForce products have a relatively short lifecycle (commonly no more than a year between product release and end of production). Projects which require a longer product lifetime (such as those which might require replacement parts 3+ years after purchase) should use a professional GPU. NVIDIA’s professional Tesla and Quadro GPU products have an extended lifecycle and long-term support from the manufacturer (including notices of product End of Life and opportunities for last buys before production is halted). Furthermore, the professional GPUs undergo a more thorough testing and validation process during production.

Power Efficiency

GeForce GPUs are intended for consumer gaming usage, and are not usually designed for power efficiency. In contrast, the Tesla GPUs are designed for large-scale deployment where power efficiency is important. This makes the Tesla GPUs a better choice for larger installations. For example, the GeForce GTX Titan X is popular for desktop deep learning workloads. In server deployments, the Tesla P40 GPU provides matching performance and double the memory capacity. However, when put side-by-side the Tesla consumes less power and generates less heat.

DMA Engines

The Direct Memory Access (DMA) Engine of a GPU allows for speedy data transfers between the system memory and the GPU memory. Because such transfers are part of any real-world application, the performance is vital to GPU-acceleration. Slow transfers cause the GPU cores to sit idle until the data arrives in GPU memory. Likewise, slow returns cause the CPU to wait until the GPU has finished returning results.

GeForce products feature a single DMA Engine* which is able to transfer data in one direction at a time. If data is being uploaded to the GPU, any results computed by the GPU cannot be returned until the upload is complete. Likewise, results being returned from the GPU will block any new data which needs to be uploaded to the GPU. The Tesla GPU products feature dual DMA Engines to alleviate this bottleneck. Data may be transferred into the GPU and out of the GPU simultaneously.

GPU Direct RDMA

NVIDIA’s GPU-Direct technology allows for greatly improved data transfer speeds between GPUs. Various capabilities fall under the GPU-Direct umbrella, but the RDMA capability promises the largest performance gain. Traditionally, sending data between the GPUs of a cluster required 3 memory copies (once to the GPU’s system memory, once to the CPU’s system memory and once to the InfiniBand driver’s memory). GPU Direct RDMA removes the system memory copies, allowing the GPU to send data directly through InfiniBand to a remote system. In practice, this has resulted in up to 67% reductions in latency and 430% increases in bandwidth for small MPI message sizes [1]. In CUDA version 8.0, NVIDIA has introduced GPU Direct RDMA ASYNC, which allows the GPU to initiate RDMA transfers without any interaction with the CPU.

GeForce GPUs do not support GPU-Direct RDMA. Although the MPI calls will still return successfully, the transfers will be performed through the standard memory-copy paths. The only form of GPU-Direct which is supported on the GeForce cards is GPU Direct Peer-to-Peer (P2P). This allows for fast transfers within a single computer, but does nothing for applications which run across multiple servers/compute nodes. Tesla GPUs have full support for GPU Direct RDMA and the various other GPU Direct capabilities. They are the primary target for these capabilities and thus have the most testing and use in the field.

Hyper-Q

Hyper-Q Proxy for MPI and CUDA Streams allows multiple CPU threads or processes to launch work on a single GPU. This is particularly important for existing parallel applications written with MPI, as these codes have been designed to take advantage of multiple CPU cores. Allowing the GPU to accept work from each of the MPI threads running on a system can offer a potentially significant performance boost. It can also reduce the amount of source code re-architecting required to add GPU acceleration to an existing application. However, the only form of Hyper-Q which is supported on the GeForce GPUs is Hyper-Q for CUDA Streams.  This allows the GeForce to efficiently accept and run parallel calculations from separate CPU cores, but applications running across multiple computers will be unable to efficiently launch work on the GPU.

GPU Health Monitoring and Management Capabilities

Many health monitoring and GPU management capabilities (which are vital for maintaining multiple GPU systems) are only supported on the professional Tesla GPUs. Health features which are not supported on the GeForce GPUs include:

  • NVML/nvidia-smi for monitoring and managing the state and capabilities of each GPU. This enables GPU support from a number of 3rd party applications and tools such as Ganglia. Perl and Python bindings are also available.
  • OOB (out of band monitoring via IPMI) allows the system to monitor GPU health, adjust fan speeds to appropriately cool the devices and send alerts when an issue is seen
  • InfoROM (persistent configuration and state data) provides the system with additional data about each GPU
  • NVHealthmon utility provides cluster administrators with a ready-to-use GPU health status tool
  • TCC allows GPUs to be specifically set to display-only or compute-only modes
  • ECC (memory error detection & correction)

Cluster tools rely upon the capabilities provided by NVIDIA NVML. Roughly 60% of the capabilities are not available on GeForce – this table offers a more detailed comparison of the NVML features supported in Tesla and GeForce GPUs:

GPU Boost

All of the latest NVIDIA GPU products support GPU Boost, but their implementations vary depending upon the intended usage scenario. GeForce cards are built for interactive desktop usage and gaming. Tesla GPUs are built for intensive, constant number crunching with stability and reliability placed at a premium. Given the differences between these two use cases, GPU Boost functions differently on Tesla than on GeForce.

How GPU Boost Works on GeForce

In Geforce’s case, the graphics card automatically determines clock speed and voltage based on the temperature of the GPU. Temperature is the appropriate independent variable as heat generation affects fan speed. For less graphically-intense games or for general desktop usage, the end user can enjoy a quieter computing experience. When playing games that require serious GPU compute, however, GPU Boost automatically cranks up the voltage and clock speeds (in addition to generating more noise).

How GPU Boost Works on Tesla

Tesla’s GPU boost level, on the other hand, can also be determined by voltage and temperature, but needn’t always operate this way.

If preferred, boost may be specified by the system administrator or computational user – the desired clock speed may be set to a specific frequency. Rather than floating the clock speed at various levels, the desired clock speed may be statically maintained unless the power consumption threshold (TDP) is reached. This is an important consideration because accelerators in an HPC environment often need to be in sync with one other. The optional deterministic aspect of Tesla’s GPU boost allows system administrators to determine optimal clock speeds and lock them in across all GPUs.

For applications that require additional performance and determinism, the most recent Tesla GPUs can be set for Auto Boost within synchronous boost groups. With Auto Boost with Groups enabled, each group of GPUs will increase clock speeds when headroom allows. The group will keep clocks in sync with each other to ensure matching performance across the group. Groups may be set in NVIDIA DCGM tools

Nvidia RTX 4000 – release date, price, specs, and benchmarks

Nvidia RTX 4000 graphics cards are officially here to dethrone the current-gen GeForce RTX 3000 series, but not every GPU in team green’s expected line-up saw the light of day. To help you navigate the convoluted waters of announcements, leaks, and rumours, we’ve compiled everything we know so far about the next-generation pixel pushers.

So far, we’ve only heard about the potential best graphics card for desktops, but we expect that the GPUs will eventually make their way into the best gaming laptop and as a part of the Nvidia GeForce Now streaming service, too. Each will likely release at different points, but they should all benefit from technologies like Nvidia DLSS 3.0 and Nvidia Reflex.

As much as RTX 4000 GPUs will undoubtedly offer a high level of performance, these next-generation graphics cards may face stiff competition from the likes of AMD RDNA 3 and Intel Arc Alchemist. Thankfully, we’ve already seen some of what the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080, and shouldn’t have to wait much longer to find out how the RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 stack up against their rivals.

Here’s everything we know about the Nvidia RTX 4000 GPUs:

Nvidia RTX 4000 release date

Nvidia RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 GPUs are now officially a thing, but the RTX 4070 and 4060 didn’t make an appearance at the same GTC keynote. The first RTX 4000 release date rolls around on October 12 when the RTX 4090 lands on shelves, while you’ll need to wait until November to gets your hands on either of the RTX 4080 graphics cards – yes, there is more than one spec.

It’s possible that we may see an RTX 4090 Ti pop up after Halloween, but this seems unlikely with Nvidia keeping hush on its entry-level and mid-range graphics cards. Various RTX 4000 model names are now listed as an EEC trademark, which doesn’t guarantee an ETA but it does bolster claims that they’ll show up in a few months’ time.

Nvidia RTX 4000 price

Nvidia prices the RTX 4000 series a fair bit higher than its RTX 3000 series.

The flagship Nvidia RTX 4080 comes in two flavours: the 12GB version at $899 USD / £949 GBP and the 16GB model priced at $1,199 USD / £1,269 GBP. Even though you couldn’t get it at MSRP at the time of launch due to chip shortages and supply constraints, the RTX 3080 debuted at $699 for 10GB and $1,249 for 12GB by comparison – the latter of which was quickly dethroned by the 12GB RTX 3080 Ti at $1,199.

Looking towards the enthusiast entry, the RTX 4090 costs $1,599 USD / £1,679 GBP. This is only a touch more than the RTX 3090, which landed with an MSRP of $1,499 USD.

The RTX 4060 and RTX 4070 still aren’t official, so we can only speculate how much they’ll cost using the flagships as a starting point. We expect the RTX 4070 could arrive at around $549 – $699 USD, while the RTX 4060 might sit near the $349 – $500 USD mark.

Nvidia RTX 4000 specs rumours

The Nvidia RTX 4000 specs are a little confusing, since team green loves to release multiple models under the same name.

On a broader scale, all RTX 4000 GPUs run on the new Ada Lovelace architecture, which improves the RTX processors and neural rendering engines. They also support the new and improved DLSS 3.0 upscaling, which doesn’t work on older RTX GPUs.

This time around, there are two GeForce RTX 4080 graphics cards, one with 12GB of GDDR6X VRAM and one with 16GB. It’s a good starting point, since games like Far Cry 6 have some trouble with anything less than 12GB at higher resolutions and settings (such as ray tracing), but AMD Radeon GPUs have been clocking 16GB since its RTX 3000 rivals hit the market.

Nvidia says that the RTX 4080 boasts between two and four times the speed of an RTX 3080 Ti on RacerX, but this will undoubtedly depend on which model you opt for. It’s worth mentioning thatNvidia CEO Jensen Huang doesn’t position these as replacements for the RTX 3000 series, but rather a complimentary enthusiast range that supplements it.

The RTX 4090 clocks in with a whopping 24GB of GDDR6X VRAM, leading the charge for Ada Lovelace. While it’s expected to guzzle on your electric, Nvidia recommends an 850W power supply, so we haven’t yet reached the clutches of four digits.

According to reliable leaker Kopite7kimi, an Nvidia RTX 4090 Ti that uses a “full fat” version of the AD102 GPU could be on the cards. The insider does specify that it’s unclear whether it’ll become an actual product, but the souped up graphics card could come equipped with 46GB GDDR6 VRAM while requiring two 16-pin power connectors.

Full fat AD102 GPU performance claims have also surfaced online, and insiders say the Nvidia RTX 4090 Ti can run Control at 4K 160fps with DLSS and ray tracing enabled.

Further leaks point towards enhanced AD104 specs, as the RTX 4070 apparently packs RTX 3090 Ti levels of performance. It also wields faster clock speeds than the RTX 4090, which could make it an excellent mid-range option.

Nvidia RTX 4000 benchmark speculation

No Nvidia RTX 4000 benchmark has come to light just yet, but that hasn’t stopped leakers sharing information relating to potential performance. Some claim that the GeForce RTX 4090 could double the performance of the RTX 3090 in both standard rasterisation and ray tracing. In terms of computing power, the rumour mill says the RTX 4090 could smash the 100 teraflops ceiling, meaning surpass the capabilities of the RTX 3090 Ti.

However, ever higher levels of performance require ever higher levels of power draw. This is where the new PCIe Gen 5 interface comes into play, which was first seen on an RTX 3090 during Intel’s Innovation event. It can provide up to a staggering 600W of power to a graphics card, but is also much more compact and less fiddly than the PCIe eight-pin power connectors we’ve become so accustomed to.

We can expect official, third-party benchmarks to accompany the RTX 4090 on October 12.

AMD vs NVIDIA — Which GPU Manufacturer Is Best? [Guide]

The war between the two titans of the GPU industry has just been rekindled. The AMD vs NVIDIA debate might have been a one-sided affair for a while, but now AMD is catching up and is ready to make an attempt for the throne.

This GPU war dates back to the 1990s. Although AMD has a much longer history in tech, NVIDIA has dominated the field in recent times and is far more successful financially, being valued at about twice as much.

It is worth keeping in mind that AMD devotes a large percentage of its resources to CPUs, giving them less of a focus on GPUs than NVIDIA.

However, history is rarely given much consideration in the world of technology; few people care that AMD has been around since the 1950s. Today, the GPU market has become an NVIDIA versus AMD situation. Scroll down to find the best choice for you.

    AMD vs NVIDIA: Performance

    If you are considering getting a new GPU, you’re probably curious about the potential performances of each card. Hitting 60 FPS seems like the bare minimum in today’s gaming world, and a good GPU is the key to achieving that performance.

    Even so, building a new PC and having it produce the best possible in-game performance isn’t just about getting the best GPU. It’s also important to know that CPU and RAM will need to be on par with the GPU to avoid bottlenecking.

    There are three general GPU classifications and each one represents a different part of the market. These are low-end or budget, mid-tier or mid-range, and high-end. As each of these categories is beneficial in different ways, it’s only fair to compare AMD and NVIDIA for each.

    Budget Cards

    For this category, we will look at the RX 5500 XT and GTX 1660 as they are probably the best budget cards that AMD and NVIDIA have to offer in the $200 price range.

    They are both good representations of their respective manufacturer’s previous flagship technologies (AMD’s RDNA and NVIDIA’s Turing) and actually stack up quite well.

    The reason that we aren’t making this about RDNA 2 and Ampere is that there aren’t any budget cards near this price point.

    While the RX 5500 XT offers a better base clock rate at 1685MHz compared to the GTX 1660’s 1530MHz, NVIDIA wisely used this to their advantage and offered a better boost rate at 1785MHz, which is higher than AMD’s game rate, at 1737MHz. Although you are unlikely to notice a difference, it’s interesting to see how this competition has extended to even the smallest details.

    AMD further showcases its capabilities with an 8GB GDDR6 RAM, which is definitively better than NVIDIA’s 6GB GDDR5. It also features higher memory bandwidth and more L2 cache, but, as you might have already guessed, NVIDIA uses less power for the GTX 1660.

    However, the hardware is nothing without accompanying software and, in this regard, NVIDIA reigns supreme. Despite the previously mentioned specifications favoring AMD, and although it consumes less power, NVIDIA ultimately performs better.

    As gamers are far less interested in power consumption than performance, NVIDIA is the winner in this category.

    Mid-Range

    For this category, we will look at AMD’s RX 6700 XT and NVIDIA’s RTX 3060 Ti as they are two great options that represent their respective companies’ foray into mid-range GPUs.

    This tier’s battle is far more interesting as cards are less evenly matched in the mid-range category than they used to be.

    The consensus among the benchmarkers is clear: the RX 6700 XT is simply the better card. The RTX 3060 Ti has a comparable performance and tightens the gap even further at 1440p but, overall, the 6700 XT will simply give you more FPS.

    However, one of the most important questions here is the price. The RTX 3060 Ti is considerably cheaper at $399, while the RX 6700 XT’s comes at a $479 price point. This leads to our next question: which card has the better value?

    It is questionable whether or not these cards should even be compared but, at this point, they are the best mid-range cards from each manufacturer.

    The fact of the matter is that the RTX 3060 Ti’s performance is appropriate for the price level at which it is being offered, which can also be said for the RX 6700 XT. Despite the price difference, RX 6700 XT is the better card, which is a win for AMD.

    High-End

    Here’s where things get a little trickier. This is because AMD didn’t really offer anything that could compete with NVIDIA until the release of the RX 6000 series, which is why NVIDIA has a huge advantage in this area.

    However, we can still compare an AMD and an NVIDIA card but first, we need to talk about the elephant in the room.

    With their latest generations, both companies released excellent enthusiast-class cards. Although AMD’s RX 6900 XT is only $200 more than NVIDIA’s high-end RTX 3080, and one could argue that these should be in the same bracket, we will compare the RX 6800 XT with the RTX 3080.

    These prices are inverted when compared to the mid-range as NVIDIA’s RTX 3080 is the more expensive card. The $50 price difference probably doesn’t seem like much when you’re spending $650-$700, but what makes this particularly interesting is the performance.

    Overall, the RX 6800 XT is the better card in terms of raw rasterization performance.

    However, the RTX 3080 performs better in the ray-tracing department, which shouldn’t be overlooked. This technology is still relatively new, but it has still been around for long enough to expect better from AMD.

    You can still give them some credit as this is their first crack at it, but the fact remains that it didn’t perform as well as NVIDIA. Still, future driver updates and better AMD-oriented game optimization should lead to better peformance.

    Ray tracing is still relatively rare on the market, including the amazing new feature from NVIDIA: DLSS. This feature can considerably increase your performance while only minimally reducing visual quality.

    In the end, it wouldn’t be fair to give NVIDIA a point here considering a huge percentage of games do not yet utilize ray tracing or DLSS. So, this point goes to AMD.

    AMD vs NVIDIA: Features

    While features may seem less critical than actual specs, they are an important part of what makes a good GPU. Both AMD and NVIDIA offer similar GPUs in terms of hardware and price, but the devil is in the details or, in this case, the features.

    Ray Tracing

    If there is something that needs to be talked about, it’s this. Although ray tracing isn’t a requirement for good GPU performance, it makes a clear difference by offering better and more realistic visuals.

    What is ray tracing anyway?

    Technical explanations aside, ray tracing is a rendering technique that allows for lighting to be presented more accurately by accounting for variables such as object materials and how lighting is reflected off of them.

    Ray tracing awards a point to NVIDIA as they were the first to implement it in their GPUs. With the arrival of Big Navi, AMD has a chance to prove themselves in this regard. So far, the RX 6000 series has performed well enough, but still not as well as the best from NVIDIA.

    NVIDIA has pursued ray tracing technology since the 2000s, having introduced it to the world in 2018. This move highlighted their dominance in the GPU market and AMD has yet to fully recover from it.

    As the next generation of gaming consoles, the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X wouldn’t have allowed their names to be associated with something less than top-of-the-line. AMD has been very upfront about its intention to introduce ray tracing in its next GPUs.

    While things do look promising for AMD with the introduction of ray tracing, the point here has to go to the market innovator NVIDIA.

    Variable Rate Shading

    VRS is a technology first brought to the market by NVIDIA that has found its best use in VR. It essentially calculates which frames in your field of view are going to be fully shaded or even rendered at all. This significantly reduces the burden on the GPU, redirecting that extra energy to more useful things.

    Biggest shading focus is on what player looks at the most.

    AMD still hasn’t incorporated this tech into their GPUs, but it’s heavily rumored that it will be introduced in their RDNA 2 line, as AMD filed for the patent for VRS all the way back in early 2019.

    There have also been talks of perfecting eye-tracking technology and using that to further improve upon VRS, which sounds like a sci-fi idea.

    As we were able to see this cool piece of technology in action on NVIDIA’s side, it deserves this point too.

    Deep Learning Super Sampling

    Designed as another way to increase the efficiency of the GPU, DLSS is a path-breaking piece of technology. It can even be considered ahead of its time because of the process required to fully enjoy its benefits.

    The biggest issue here is that game developers are required to enable DLSS support when making the game. In order for the player to see the improvement, it needs to be sent to NVIDIA, who then let an AI run through the game, analyze the images, and automatically upscale it to a higher resolution.

    Initially, the fact that NVIDIA does the heavy lifting was one of the biggest drawbacks of DLSS. The process wasn’t as optimized as it needed to be and this resulted in DLSS looking like an interesting idea rather than an effective technology.

    With the arrival of NVIDIA’s Ampere architecture, this process was streamlined and we certainly expect further improvements.

    G-Sync vs FreeSync

    These are NVIDIA’s and AMD’s adaptive synchronization technologies designed to eliminate screen tearing during gameplay. Screen tearing occurs when the GPU’s output is mismatched with the display’s refresh rate.

    The communication between the GPU and the monitor basically works in this way: if the monitor refreshes at 60Hz, it requires 60 frames to be sent from the GPU (same for 120Hz, 144Hz, and so on).

    The issue usually occurs when the GPU is unable to produce the required frames, causing screen tearing.

    Adaptive sync technology allows for the GPU to effectively change the monitor refresh rate, depending on the number of frames being produced.

    If the game dips to 40 FPS, the GPU will limit the monitor to refresh at 40Hz. However, this doesn’t make the game run any smoother, it just prevents screen tearing.

    In the not so distant past, the solution for this was software-based, most notably with VSync, but this is being phased out in favor of newer technologies.

    G-Sync is NVIDIA’s solution to screen tearing and has drawn some criticism. As the first to experiment with adaptive sync tech, NVIDIA used that to their advantage, although with some hardware requirements. Monitors must be G-Sync compatible and, although not specifically stated, this brought an extra cost of anywhere from $100 to $300 in price.

    To run G-Sync, monitors require a proprietary NVIDIA G-Sync scaler module which means they will all have similar on-screen menus and options. This is AMD’s FreeSync’s biggest advantage: by using the Adaptive Sync standard built into the DisplayPort 1.2a specification, it allows manufacturers to choose any cheaper scaler.

    Nevertheless, G-Sync has a better way to handle the GPU producing too many frames. It will lock the GPU’s frame rate upper limit to that of the monitor. FreeSync, when in-game VSync is turned off, will allow the GPU to produce extra frames. This can lead to screen tearing but also lowers the input lag.

    The biggest issue which divides the community is the fact that not all NVIDIA cards work with FreeSync monitors, just as not all AMD cards will work with G-Sync monitors. This is being ironed out, but the fact remains that you will need to check if your monitor will work properly with your GPU.

    While both sides have their pros and cons when it comes to adaptive sync technology, the fact that FreeSync is more readily available is what ultimately earns AMD the point here.

    AMD vs NVIDIA: Drivers And Software

    The fact of the matter is that good hardware requires good software. Drivers are programs that control how a certain device (such as a GPU) interfaces with the CPU. It allows the software to use the hardware it controls to the best of its ability without needing to control every aspect of how that particular part operates.

    As previously mentioned, AMD’s RX 5000 series failed miserably when it launched, with driver issues creating black screens and crashes. Unfortunately, this issue persists despite newer drivers attempting to fix it. NVIDIA’s issues are equally problematic, as they are often smaller and therefore more difficult to identify.

    AMD has significantly improved its driver capabilities with its yearly Radeon Adrenalin updates. The 2020 version allegedly offers an impressive 12% improvement over the 2019 version.

    AMD also makes a conscious effort to simplify things and only uses one piece of software to update its drivers. They have followed a schedule of at least once-per-month with major releases.

    The biggest setback for AMD is their products’ persistent issues, which take a long time to fix.

    NVIDIA’s driver update schedule consists of two diverse applications to control their hardware.

    Their NVIDIA Control Panel enables the configuration of aspects such as 3D settings and display resolution.

    GeForce Experience handles game optimization, driver updates, and extra features.

    The NVIDIA Control Panel has not seen a UX or UI change for more than a decade. The design is outdated and it can be incredibly slow at times.

    GeForce Experience in general sounds like a great idea, but it isn’t what users hoped it would be. Users must log in to use the available features such as automatic driver updates, recording, FPS counter, etc. For many, GE is considered to be bloatware.

    In comparison, Radeon Software is much quicker, far more intuitive, requires no account and provides other useful features such as Radeon Chill, Radeon Boost, manual and automatic overclocking, undervolting, manual fan curve, and more.

    In the end, while AMD has its downsides, the efficient simplicity with which their software operates earns them a point in this category.

    AMD vs NVIDIA: Power Consumption and Efficiency

    When AMD introduced Navi and announced their gamble at TSMC’s 7nm FinFET process, they probably thought this amazing 50% per watt performance would bridge the efficiency gap.

    Unfortunately, this was not the case: Navi didn’t even outperform older NVIDIA GPUs that were built on the TSMC’s last-gen 12nm node.

    The future looks brighter for AMD as its RDNA 2 cards were able to produce another 50% upgrade over RDNA.

    This isn’t completely black and white. In the extreme performance range, NVIDIA’s RTX 3090 uses a lot of power with only the RX 6900 XT coming close.

    We could say that RX 6800 XT is not as power-draining as the RTX 3090, but that would completely disregard the fact that the latter is simply a better GPU.

    This does switch in the medium range where the RTX 3070 is the better performer, but only with a slight margin. That margin is the same in terms of overall performance so we can’t really chalk this up as an NVIDIA win.

    For now, NVIDIA is simply a better performer in the budget category and there isn’t much room for debate here. Both companies are preparing their respective budget cards for their latest generation, so this section might need an update soon.

    NVIDIA narrowly edges out AMD in the performance-per-watt metric in their latest generations, but also for the previous few. Although AMD is catching up, it should be concerned with NVIDIA’s efficiency at using previous-generation lithography.

    AMD vs NVIDIA: Dollar Value

    While top-level performance is what most gamers are looking for in their GPUs, the price also needs to be considered. As previously discussed, there are three basic categories for both price and performance.

    NVIDIA has a clear advantage in the extreme price range performance-wise, but that gap is gradually closing with AMD’s RX 6900 XT coming close to the RTX 3090 while being a whole $500 cheaper.

    If we drop a level below, where the RX 6800 XT is $50 cheaper than the RTX 3080, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to claim it’s a better option.

    However, due to the RTX 3080’s better ray-tracing performance, it’s hard to outright say that either is better. Due to the price difference, let’s say that AMD has a slight edge in this price bracket.

    Dropping further down to the mid-range market, we have a much clearer picture. Although the RX 6800 is more expensive than the RTX 3070, it is also a better card and its cost is justified. However, as the question here is the dollar value, we feel that both cards perform appropriately for their prices so we will call this one a tie.

    Although the comparisons seem mostly evenly matched, the performance per dollar favors AMD, which is why they get a point this time around. Keep in mind that it was a close match.

    And The Winner is…

    With a total score of 5 to 5, there is no better card manufacturer. Of course, the AMD vs NVIDIA debate is subjective and you shouldn’t blindly purchase either company’s card. The general advice before making any sort of investment in a PC part is to know your requirements and budget.

    You should carefully research all available cards before making your final decision. In both company’s latest generations, the answer to which you should buy essentially boils down to ray tracing. If you don’t consider that of the utmost importance then AMD is a better option. However, if you want the highest possible image quality, you should go with NVIDIA.

    Compute Engine provides NVIDIA GPUs for your VMs in
    passthrough mode so that your VMs have direct control over the GPUs and their
    associated memory.

    3DMark 11 is Futuremark’s legacy DirectX 11 benchmark. He used four tests based on two scenes: one is several submarines exploring a sunken ship, the other is an abandoned temple deep in the jungle. All tests make extensive use of volumetric lighting and tessellation and, despite being run at 1280×720, are relatively heavy.     Cloud Gate is a legacy DirectX 11 feature level 10 benchmark used to test home PCs and low-end laptops. It displays several scenes of some strange teleportation device launching spaceships into the unknown at a fixed resolution of 1280×720. As with the Ice Storm benchmark, it was deprecated in January 2020 and 3DMark Night Raid is now recommended instead.

    Ice Storm Graphics — legacy benchmark, part of the 3DMark package. Ice Storm has been used to measure the performance of entry-level laptops and Windows-based tablets. It uses DirectX 11 feature level 9to display a battle between two space fleets near a frozen planet in 1280×720 resolution. Support for Ice Storm ended in January 2020, now the developers recommend using Night Raid instead.
