AMD Radeon RX 6600 Review: RDNA2 Goes Mainstream at $329

The AMD Radeon RX 6600 officially starts at $329, the same price point as Nvidia’s RTX 3060. It uses a harvested Navi 23 chip, delivering lower performance than the RX 6600 XT. It’s decent for 1080p gaming, but struggles at higher resolutions and with ray tracing.

Two months back, AMD launched the AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, the first card to use the Navi 23 GPU. Today, AMD follows up with its first truly mainstream priced RX 6000-series card, the Radeon RX 6600. Take the same GPU but with four of the CUs (compute units) disabled, clock it a bit lower and you get the RX 6600 non-XT.

Will it be one of the best graphics cards, or will it come up a bit short? A lot of that will depend on retail pricing and availability, as GPU prices remain inflated, but supply has been a bit better on the RX 6600 XT than on other RDNA2 graphics cards, so hopefully for gamers, AMD can supply a reasonable quantity of GPUs for this launch.

I talked about the lack of a vanilla RX 6700 prior to the Navi 23 launch, and that previously widely rumored card remains MIA. Presumably that’s because any of the Navi 22 chips that aren’t fully functional can be sold as one of the various mobile RX 6000M-series solutions. AMD isn’t taking that same approach with Navi 23, though, and along with trimming off some of the performance, the RX 6600 reduces the power requirement to just 132W and also cuts the official starting price to $329 — the same price as Nvidia’s RTX 3060, though with ‘only’ 8GB VRAM. That’s basically mainstream pricing in today’s market — actually, it’s less than you’ll pay for most actual mainstream GPUs — though we suspect AMD’s partners and the various retail outlets will jack up the price as long as GPUs remain in short supply.

Besides reducing the CU count and reducing the GPU clocks — by a relatively large 315MHz if you look at the Game Clock — AMD also reduced the GDDR6 speed from 16Gbps to 14Gbps. Note that the ‘maximum’ boost clock of 2491MHz (technically the GPU can exceed even the boost clock) is quite a bit higher than the game clock, so we’ll have to see how it all plays out in the benchmarks. But overall we’d expect the RX 6600 to be 10–25 percent slower than the RX 6600 XT, depending on whether a game needs more GPU power (up to 25% slower in theory) or more memory bandwidth (about 12.5% slower). Paper specs don’t always match up with real-world performance, so we’ll have to see how the RX 6600 fares against its main competition — which includes not just the RTX 3060 and RX 6600 XT, but also previous generation cards like the RTX 2060, RTX 2060 Super, and RX 5600 XT. Considering this card replaces the previous generation RX 5600 XT, it’s unfortunate that generational pricing has gone up quite a bit, but then there’s no sense in expecting AMD to launch at a price that few people will ever see. Again, we hope there will actually be a fairly decent supply of RX 6600 cards, both for the initial launch and going forward.

We mentioned the issue with AMD’s game clocks vs. boost clocks already, and we’ve used AMD’s game clocks for the above TFLOPS numbers. However, given the way things have changed with boost clocks on RDNA2 (i.e., RDNA2 GPUs often reach and exceed boost clocks while game), it might be better to compare performance using boost clocks rather than game clocks. If we do that, the RX 6600 can provide about 8.9 TFOPS of compute, while the RX 6600 XT delivers 10.6 TFLOPS of compute. That’s a much lower 16% drop in theoretical performance, and it matches up better with the reduced memory bandwidth.

The Navi 23 architecture uses the same general formula as the other Big Navi and RDNA2 GPUs. It supports DirectX Raytracing (DXR) and implements the full DirectX 12 Ultimate features list, including Variable Rate Shading (VRS), mesh shaders, and sampler feedback. The smaller 32MB Infinity Cache on Navi 23 represents a compromise that mostly benefits 1080p and maybe 1440p, but mainstream GPUs generally aren’t used at higher resolutions so that should be okay.

And, it’s an ideal GPU for those who consider flagship cards like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 or the pricier Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 too expensive. It is possibly the best Nvidia GeForce graphics card for most gamers and easily holds off the resurgent competition from the best AMD graphics cards in its class.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is available starting December 2, 2020, and you can pick it up starting at $399 (about £299, AU$540). This largely falls in line with what we’d expect a graphics card in this segment to cost, especially considering the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super started at the same $399 (about £315, AU$580) and the RTX 2060 was $349 (about £260, AU$475).

The RTX 3060 Ti falls right around the same price as the RTX 2060 Super, while being as powerful as the RTX 2080 Super, a card that retailed for $699 (about £560, AU$990). That card was a 1440p Ultra machine, and so it follows that the 3060 Ti will be as well, and now it’s way cheaper.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is based on the same Ampere architecture as the RTX 3080, and gives us a look at what the Ampere lineup will look like in the mid-range and budget segment of the GPU market. This isn’t exactly going to be the graphics card that’ll push Watch Dogs Legion with ray tracing at 4K, but it is definitely up to doing it at 1080p.

With this graphics card, you’re getting 8GB of the same GDDR6 memory found in the RTX 3070, paired with 38 Ampere Streaming Multiprocessors (SM). However, because of changes Nvidia has made to its SM since Turing, each of these now has 128 CUDA cores, double that of the 64 in each Turing SM. That means there are now 4,864 CUDA cores in the RTX 3060 Ti, up from the 2,176 found in the RTX 2060 Super.

Power consumption sees an increase over the RTX 2060 Super, but it’s not as pronounced as other cards in the Nvidia Ampere lineup. The total graphics power (TGP) is 200W for the RTX 3060 Ti, up from the 175W of the RTX 2060 Super. It’s more, but it shouldn’t be so much more that you’ll need to worry about upgrading your power supply to accommodate – assuming you have a competent one in the first place, that is.

Back in Turing, each SM had two datapaths – one dedicated to Floating Point (FP32) workloads, and the other dedicated to Integer. With Ampere, and thus the RTX 3060 Ti, Nvidia was able to engineer the SM to have one of the datapaths essentially able to pull double duty, which is why the amount of CUDA cores has effectively doubled per SM with Ampere.

Outside of CUDA cores, each SM also has Tensor Cores for AI workloads like Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), and dedicated ray tracing cores. Each SM has one RT core and four Tensor Cores. The dedicated among you might have noticed that’s half the amount of Tensor Cores in each SM than Turing had, but there’s a good reason for that – they’re more than twice as fast this time around.

The RT core is what’s responsible for the ray tracing that everyone is talking about. The whole point is to offload the massive computational load that any kind of ray tracing entails, in order to be able to produce playable framerates.

Basically, when a light ray is cast in a game engine, the SM will send that information over to the RT core, where it will calculate where that ray bounces, and report that back to the SM so it can render the image. This doesn’t make ray tracing computationally free, though, as you’ll see from the massive hit in performance that having RT on in Metro Exodus entails.

However, without these dedicated RT cores, the performance hit would turn the game into a slideshow.

Luckily, the other dedicated type of core, the Tensor Core is the other part of the equation that makes it somewhat sensible to enable ray tracing when playing the best PC games. Through the Tensor Core, developers can integrate DLSS in games, which is essentially an AI-enabled upscaling tech. This helps boost performance by having the SM render a scene in a lower resolution, then having the Tensor Core use data from Nvidia’s Supercomputers to intelligently scale that scene up to full resolution.

With DLSS, you’re able to make up much of the performance difference that ray tracing brings to the table, so you can have the awesome image quality benefits of ray tracing, without sacrificing too much in the way of performance. In fact, without DLSS, ray tracing simply wouldn’t be worth it.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti also brings a wealth of features to the table too. Esports players are going to love Nvidia Reflex, which aims to cut system latency, RTX IO works alongside Microsoft DirectStorage to load data straight from your system storage to your VRAM and Nvidia Broadcast allows for you to filter out background noise and images while streaming or video chatting, regardless of the software you’re using. And, while it’s definitely true that a lot of software, like Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams all allow for similar functionality, having all the settings in one place is a huge time-saver.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Founders Edition is, well, almost exactly the same as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Founders Edition. The two cards are exactly the same size, with the same amount of fans, and the same exposed fins on the back of the card that helps shoot hot air out of the graphics card up and out of the system.

The only core difference here is that it’s a lighter gray color than the RTX 3070. And, just like the rest of the Founders Editions in the Ampere lineup, Nvidia has absolutely delivered some of the best-looking graphics cards we’ve ever seen.

And the best part? The stylish cooler is also effective. Throughout our entire testing suite, we saw temperatures peak at 72C, which is about the same temperature seen by the RTX 2060 Super, but while consuming 10% more power.  

It’s not all sunshine and roses though. While the cooler itself is amazing, shrinking down the GPU board to accommodate it brings the same drawback here as the rest of the lineup. Namely, the RTX 3060 Ti is using the same 12-pin power connector. Nvidia does include an adapter in the box, which lets you connect one 8-pin PCIe cable to the 12-pin port, but it does make cable management a little more of a trouble. Luckily, PSU manufacturers have already started working on dedicated 12-pin PCIe cables, so hopefully that problem goes away as time goes on.

  • Exceptional 1440p performance

What we love about new mid-range graphics cards like the RTX 3060 Ti is that they bring the baseline of PC gaming performance up, due to how accessible they are to everyone. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti absolutely blows the RTX 2060 Super out of the water, just like the rest of the Ampere lineup has done to its predecessors.

In 3DMark Time Spy Extreme, for instance, which is a test geared towards 4K gaming performance in DirectX 12 – which current gen games will mostly be using – the RTX 3060 Ti is 38% faster than the 2060 Super. And, in the Port Royal test, which tests raw ray tracing performance, Nvidia’s new GPU is 39% faster than its Turing equivalent.

But what’s more impressive is how the RTX 3060 Ti compares to the RTX 2080 Super. Nvidia is claiming that the RTX 3060 Ti is faster than the RTX 2080 Super, but that’s a little bit of an overstatement. However, the RTX 3060 Ti is around the same level of performance as the RTX 2080 Super, which is still incredibly impressive, given the price of this new card.

In those two synthetic benchmarks we mentioned earlier, the RTX 3060 Ti is 7% and faster and 0.5% faster in Time Spy Extreme and Port Royal, respectively.

In actual games, the RTX 3060 Ti obviously kills it. In Metro Exodus without ray tracing and on the Ultra quality preset at 1440p, the RTX 3060 Ti manages 69 fps to the RTX 2080 Super’s 68 fps – which is within margin of error. When you turn on ray tracing however, the third-generation RT Cores get to stretch their wings, with a wider 8% performance lead.

Throughout most of the games we tested the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti in, the graphics card showed its strength in 1440p gaming, with only Red Dead Redemption 2 and Total War: Three Kingdoms resulting in framerates less than 60 fps at max settings. And, considering just how heavy those two games are, the RTX 3060 Ti’s scores of 55 fps and 59 fps, respectively, is damn impressive.

The Nvidia Geforce RTX 3060 Ti brings game-changing 1440p performance to the mid-range market, and should remain a go-to 1440p card for quite a while, considering how both AMD and Nvidia have set their sights on 4K as the new Flagship battleground.

And, when it comes to straight 1440p performance, the RTX 3060 Ti absolutely stands completely on its own in the marketplace when you consider both the performance and the price. This graphics card is around the same price as the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, but is around 35% faster throughout our testing.

We’re sure AMD has something in the cards to make this recommendation a little more complicated, but at the time of writing, Team Red has nothing that can touch the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti from a sheer value perspective, which is definitely a weird place to find AMD in.

It’s definitely going to be interesting to see how this graphics card matures over the next generation of gaming, however. With the PS5 and Xbox Series X having just hit the streets, graphics requirements for games are about to become a lot more demanding. Right now the RTX 3060 Ti definitely feels like it’s ready for the big time, but only time will tell how this graphics card handles this next generation of games.

In the here and now, however, anyone looking for a mid-range graphics card to handle 1440p gaming is going to find a lot to love. At that resolution, you’re easily going to be able to just crank settings up to max and forget about them. That’s not something you’ve really been able to do before now in this price segment. The best part? There’s enough performance headroom here to take a peek at what 4K gaming has to offer with the best PC games out there right now – just don’t expect that buttery-smooth 60fps experience that the RTX 3080 can offer.

Buy it if…

You’re comfortable staying at 1080p
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is definitely capable of some entry-level 4K gaming, where this graphics card really shines is at the lower 1080p and 1440p resolutions. The RTX 3060 Ti will be able to deliver high-framerate gaming at 1080p for years.

You don’t want to spend a whole lot of money
Because the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is just $399 (about £299, AU$540), you don’t have to worry about emptying your piggy bank just to get the latest graphics card.

You want ray tracing at a reasonable price
At 1080p, the RTX 3060 Ti is an absolute champion at ray tracing, and you don’t have to worry about unplayable frame rates at 1080p, or really even 1440p with DLSS enabled.

Don’t buy it if…

You’re looking for 4K gaming
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti can do a bit of 4K gaming, but if that’s the main resolution you’re going for, you’re better off going for a more capable graphics card, like the RTX 3070 or RTX 3080.

You can afford to move up the product stack
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is a fantastic performer for the price, but if money isn’t really an issue, it still pales in comparison to the RTX 3080.

Also consider

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 might not be as powerful as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, but it’s still got plenty to offer at a slightly better price. There’s no Founders Edition card, however, so you’ll have to look for third-party board partners for this one.

AMD Radeon RX 6600XT
The AMD Radeon RX 6600XT is a very strong alternative to the RTX 3060 Ti, but only up to a point. It is slightly cheaper, but it is also about 20% to 30% in some tasks, so we’d still recommend you go with the RTX 3060 Ti. But if you can’t find that card anywhere and need something to hold you over, the RX 6600XT isn’t outrageously expensive and will definitely get you solid performance.

When you want a computer with a ton of graphics muscle, you want the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080. This graphics card has a stunning amount of power thanks to its combination of ample CUDA cores combined with plenty of Tensor and RT cores. It’s enough to drive games at 4K without suffering from abysmal framerates.

Until recently, it was incredibly difficult to find an RTX 3080 to buy without an astronomical mark-up. Thankfully, Even we’re now starting to see a return to something resembling normalcy as 3080 stock becomes more readily available. We see options available from Newegg in the US, Scan and Ebuyer in the UK, and Mwave in Australia, and their prices aren’t too bad, either. 

Of course, you always had the option of purchasing a pre-built gaming PC, which was a cost-effective alternative to buying the card alone. That said, we think it’s now possible to buy an RTX 3080 card at a decent price, meaning you no longer have to resort to that option.

The RTX 3080 stock situation in the US remains tough, with many retailers unable to meet demand months after the GPU went on sale. Here’s the RTX 3080 stock situation for the major retailers:

Think going direct to the source, Nvidia itself, will get you an RTX 3080? While the company sells the founders edition of the RTX 3080 for $699, it’s currently out of stock.

Nvidia RTX 3080 deals at Amazon
Amazon’s RTX 3080 page shows a variety of third party models from the likes of MSI and PNY, but most are ‘Currently unavailable’. There are a few models in stock, but they are very over-priced, such as the Asus TUF RTX 3080 for $1,999 . We’d recommend waiting.

Nvidia RTX 3080 deals at Newegg
Most of the RTX 3080 cards are out of stock at the moment, but you can choose to ‘Auto notify’ when stock comes back in. There is one model available at the moment for $1720, but you may be better off aiming for a deal in the Newegg Shuffle.

If you frequent gaming and hardware sites, you’ll see lots of buzz around «4K gaming» on high-end monitors, as well as the rise of more-affordable 1440p (2,560-by-1,440-pixel) displays. Spend long enough in those parts, and you might assume that high-res gaming and expensive, monster video cards rule the PC-gaming world.

Not so! Yes, they are important, and yes, they are the eventual future—when they get cheaper, much cheaper. For the foreseeable future, though, playing at 1,920 by 1,080 pixels (a.k.a. 1080p, or «full HD») will remain the sweet spot for most PC gamers.

Today, 1080p monitors are affordable—you can find plenty of ’em down around $100—and even a midrange video card can run the latest games on one of these displays with a silky-smooth frame rate. In fact, according to the latest Steam Hardware Survey(Opens in a new window) results, 1080p remains by far the most common native display resolution for PC gamers on the service, outranking all other resolutions combined.

The truth is, though most gamers would love to play at the highest resolution possible, buying both a high-res 4K (3,840-by-2,160-pixel) or 1440p display and a video card that can ace gaming at that higher resolution will cost you plenty. (One depends on the other.) Most of us just want our games to look good and run smoothly, and that’s much less expensive to achieve at the mainstream resolution of 1,920 by 1,080.

This resolution has been the de facto standard for gaming for some time now, and it will stay that way until cheap 1440p monitors become much more common, or 4K-capable graphics cards become reasonably affordable. (At this writing, gaming at 4K resolution with leading PC titles was impossible to achieve with a card costing much less than $400, unless you were willing to dial back on the detail settings. ) So purchasing a video card that can run games at a smooth clip at 1080p is a solid investment, one that should keep you happy for at least a few years, if not longer.


1080p Gaming Cards: A Competitive Field

Just one problem: Since 1080p is such a popular resolution, a boatload of video cards are competing for the top spot in the category. The field of 1080p graphics cards is more granular as 2022 kicks off than it’s ever been, with nearly a dozen different card classes (defined by their different core graphics processors) to choose from. But that’s where we come in. We’ll walk you through the features you need to pay attention to when shopping for a 1080p-ideal video card, and outline the best cards we’ve tested for gaming at this resolution, given your budget.

The good news? Nvidia’s introduction of its «Turing»-generation video cards back in 2018 and 2019, alongside AMD’s «Navi» line of cards, has meant better 1080p power than ever for under $300 MSRP. Nvidia also, in mid-to-late 2018, introduced its first cards in its new GeForce RTX line, including the GeForce RTX 2080 and GeForce RTX 2070, as well as an expensive, elite-class GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. (Most of these were augmented by and, in some cases, replaced by newer, mid-2019 «RTX Super» editions, as well as the newest RTX 30 Series cards like the RTX 3070, RTX 3080, and RTX 3080 Ti) While these high-end cards will run any game very nicely at 1080p, they are mighty, mighty overkill for this resolution, starting at—in theory, anyway—$499 for cards based on the RTX 3070 and around $700 for the RTX 3080 cards. (Those are MSRPs or list prices, and seldom the going rate at the moment; due to silicon shortages and the activities of scalpers, it’s pricing pandemonium out there right now.) But even with higher prices than normal here in 2022, you don’t need to spend anything like that for 1080p play…in most cases.


Buying Basics: What to Look for in a 1080p Card

Most cards that are «good enough» for 1080p gaming ring up at between $100 and $300 (again: MSRP, not current street prices) at this writing. Pricier cards will certainly do the job, too. But the further you get above $300 MSRP, the more into overkill territory you’ve gone for most games. Here are the key factors in play.

How Much Video Memory Is Enough?

The amount of graphics memory (or video RAM) that your video card has onboard directly affects the resolution at which you can game smoothly, as well as the detail settings that are possible. The overall power of the graphics processing unit (commonly called the «GPU») on the card dictates how well you can run a specific game at certain settings, too. But think of the video memory as a freeway that opens up lanes for the GPU to work its magic without getting congested.

Without enough video memory, the GPU will be constrained, unable to perform at its maximum potential. The reason: The video card actually crunches all the pixels that go onto the screen while they are in memory. So, the more data that’s needed, either for a certain resolution or to display more detail in a game, the more memory is required to handle it efficaciously. That’s why high-end video cards tend to have more on-card memory; more of it is needed to manage all the pixels that render games at higher resolutions and at higher detail settings.

Generally speaking, for 1080p gaming, 2GB of video memory is the absolute bare minimum, while 4GB is the minimum to get for high-detail 1080p play in 2022.

In cards under $300 (MSRP) nowadays, you’ll see graphics memory ranging from 1GB up to 8GB. A few of the key cards for 1080p gaming come in 3GB/6GB and 4GB/8GB variants. Don’t spend the money on any more RAM or GPU power than you need. For most 1080p play, opting for a 6GB or 8GB card should future-proof you, especially if you intend to upgrade your gaming monitor to a 1440p or 4K screen in the near future. But if that’s the case, you’ll want a card that’s equipped with a more powerful GPU, too.

Which Ports Does My Graphics Card Need?

All the standard outputs on today’s graphics cards (VGA, DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort) support 1080p resolution, though VGA and DVI ports have practically disappeared from late-model cards worth mentioning. In most cases, you’ll just need to pick a card that has a port matching what’s on your monitor. It’s not until you get into resolutions higher than 1080p that it’s possible to start exceeding the capabilities of some interfaces, such as VGA and older versions of HDMI.

If you’re sticking to 1080p, you shouldn’t have much cause for concern or confusion, since all cards and most monitors these days have multiple ports. Chances are, you’ll be able to just plug in and go; at worst, if you’re upgrading from an old system or card, you may need a new cable or an adapter. So keep these things in mind while you’re shopping.

Both DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 can support 1080p resolution up to a 240Hz refresh rate, so if playing games at a high refresh rate is your main concern (more on that in a moment), make sure you pick up a card and a cable that are appropriate for this aim. However neither HDMI 2.0 nor HDMI 2.1 can support 360Hz (only DisplayPort 1.4b and above can handle that job), so make sure if you buy an elite, cutting-edge monitor like the Asus ROG Swift 360Hz PG259QN that you have the right GPU and cable for the job.

Also realize, if you’re making the move for the first time away from DVI or VGA, that the HDMI and DisplayPort interfaces can carry an audio signal; if your display has built-in speakers (or is an HDTV), that can eliminate some cabling complexity.

How Much Should My Graphics Card Cost (at MSRP)?

Note: We are talking list prices (MSRP) here; see our provisos earlier around the out-of-control video card street prices that have prevailed into 2022.

This is a moving target, but it’s safe to say you can expect to drop between $100 and $300 on a 1080p-appropriate video card here in 2022, depending on whether you want to run games at the very highest settings, or closer to medium ones. If you’re interested in enabling anti-aliasing (AA), which smooths jagged lines from the edges of in-game objects, you’ll need to spend toward the higher end of the range, especially if you want to crank up the AA settings as high as possible. (AA tends to be demanding.)

If you’re content with just average detail settings and frame rates, by all means adhere to a strict budget. But if you want maximum detail and AA at 1080p, you’ll probably need to venture into the $200-to-$300 zone. The pricing on mainstream, 1080p-capable mainstream graphics cards hasn’t gone quite as bananas as it has for the higher-end Nvidia GeForce RTX and AMD Radeon RX 6000 series cards, but you’ll still see a premium over list price, in many cases.

Should I Get an AMD or an Nvidia Graphics Card?

Both AMD and Nvidia have strong offerings, as 2022 kicks into gear, between $100 and $400 MSRP, though we give Nvidia an edge for hitting more price points within the range with solid offerings. But so long as you’re sticking to both companies’ latest-gen cards, it’s hard to pick a bad one for 1080p in that price span.

On the supporting-software front, we also give Nvidia the win, but it’s a near-run thing nowadays. Nvidia’s GeForce Experience software is slick, lets you record in-game video easily with its Shadowplay feature, and updates your drivers for you (only prompting you when they’re ready to install). Nvidia’s software also helps you join co-op games quickly and easily. AMD’s Radeon Software boasts similar capabilities, and the company’s driver software is a clear improvement over the Catalyst app from days of yore. There’s no longer as much daylight between Team Green (Nvidia) and Team Red (AMD) on this score as in previous years.

Also worth considering: the competing image-smoothing technologies, FreeSync (AMD) and G-Sync (Nvidia). If you have a new monitor that supports one or the other, that would be a vital reason to choose one chip company over the another. That said, you can currently find a subset of monitors(Opens in a new window) that are branded as FreeSync, but which Nvidia also supports under its G-Sync image-smoothing tech; these displays are dubbed «G-Sync Compatible.»

Then there’s sharpening tech. This addition to gamers’ arsenals is the perfect way to pinch every bit of performance you can out of a card. What they do, in a nutshell, is downscale the resolution of a game (thereby increasing performance by up to 30% on the same card), without sacrificing visual fidelity in the process. Currently, the two competing technologies from Nvidia and AMD are called Nvidia Image Scaling and Radeon Super Resolution.

Finally, there’s DLSS. As an Nvidia-only feature, the frame-rate gains (averaging anywhere between 5% and 40% in some cases) might seem enticing to anyone trying to get the most out of their card in 1080p gaming. However, DLSS is often optimized and tuned on the engine side for 1440p or 4K resolutions, since those stand the most to gain from the technology. Games rendered in 1080p do see a boost, no doubt about that, but the gains are often far less noticeable in 1080p and often don’t do enough to justify the gap in price between a «GTX»-branded card and an «RTX»-branded card. (The RTXs are the only models that feature the necessary Tensor cores to make all the magic happen.) If you’re a 1080p gamer, we’d recommend going with a high-end GTX model rather than paying extra for a lower-end RTX model in the hopes that Nvidia adds DLSS support for the games you like to play somewhere down the line.

Should I Get an Overclocked Card, or a Reference Card?

In the world of video cards, the manufacturer of a graphics chip (AMD or Nvidia) designs a GPU, as well as (usually) an adequate cooling mechanism for the card. This is known as a «reference design,» the baseline model of the card with nothing too fancy added, running at safe speeds. Once the chip maker designs this basic package, it hands off the design to its partners (say, MSI, EVGA, Asus, Gigabyte, or Sapphire) to use as a «reference» or «stock» design for their own retail cards.

Often, these companies will offer cards based on this basic design, but also crank out more-expensive, higher-performance versions that are overclocked. The reference design usually will have AMD or Nvidia branding somewhere on the card, and look reserved compared with the more-aggressive designs with bigger fans, exotic shrouds, and the manufacturer’s own branding more prominent than Nvidia’s or AMD’s. With these latter cards, the larger, more complex cooling hardware on the board might allow them to run cooler, too, granting more headroom for overclocking, which can result in a small boost in performance. (Some of these cards are overclocked right out of the box.)

As impressive as these tricked-out cards can be, they can be louder than stock versions, and priced higher. Unless you really like the particular aesthetics of a given model (to show off, say, in a windowed PC case), or you know from a review that one is particularly impressive, we’d suggest doing some shopping research. Most of the time, your money is better spent stepping up to a card with a higher-end GPU, even if it’s a stock design, rather than a similarly priced, snazzier-looking overclocked card based around a lower-end (or previous-generation) graphics chip.

What Is My Monitor’s Refresh Rate, and Why Does It Matter?

Note that all of our 1080p-card advice is based on the assumption that you’ll be using a standard monitor with a refresh rate of 60Hz. In essence, a high-refresh monitor can actually display all the frames per second a card can put out, up to the monitor’s refresh-rate limit, which is a boon for smoothness in many cases and a big step up from the 60Hz limit of most conventional monitors.

Mega-popular online games such as Counter Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, and DOTA 2 benefit greatly from a 240Hz, 300Hz, or 360Hz refresh rate, and these games are also optimized to the point where you could likely approach that frame rate with an under-$300 (MSRP) video card at 1080p. Similarly, GPUs in the $150-to-$300 MSRP range can push games like Apex Legends, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Rocket League, and Rainbow Six: Siege into the 144Hz 1080p realm without a problem. The point is that if you’re planning on gaming at 1080p competitively, make sure you’ve got a card rated for the game(s) you intend to play at that refresh rate, because the last thing you’d want to end up with is a pricey monitor that doesn’t have a powerful enough GPU to back it up properly. That’s changed now that both cards selling for around the same price, easily making the RX 6950 XT the best 4K gaming GPU you can buy.

It’s almost the best video card on the market, only losing to Nvidia’s offerings when it comes to ray tracing. It’s a high-end graphics card, and our review shows that it can beat the RTX 3090 in 4K gaming. Factoring in the price, it’s actually a great value GPU, as well. $1,000 is expensive for any graphics card, but that’s a lot less than Nvidia is charging for similar performance.

If you want uncompromising 4K gaming performance and you aren’t too concerned with ray tracing, this is the graphics card to buy. It’s one of the fastest video cards around, so features like Nvidia’s DLSS aren’t as important.

Even in a game as demanding as Cyberpunk 2077, the Radeon RX 6600 XT can put up above 60 fps with all of the sliders turned up. Except for ray tracing, of course, which remains one of the most demanding gaming tasks for a graphics card. The RX 6600 XT doesn’t handle ray tracing as well as its Nvidia counterpart, but neither card is really cut out for it.

Nvidia went a different route with its 30-series GPUs, replacing last gen’s Titan RTX with the GeForce RTX 3090 (that’s what we found, at least, in our RTX 3080 versus 3090 comparison). It’s a monster GPU — don’t put this in an external GPU enclosure — sporting 24GB of GDDR6X memory, a massive 10,496 CUDA cores, and a boost clock of 1.7GHz. But the new RTX 3090 Ti is even better with more cores, a higher clock speed, and a 10% boost over the base model on average.

You should only buy the RTX 3090 Ti if you can take advantage of its massive amount of memory, though. The RTX 3080 Ti is almost identical in 4K gaming performance. The best case for the RTX 3090 Ti is if you use it for gaming with some productivity tasks on the side. It can shred rendering and 3D animation tasks, as well as CAD programs.

If you prefer Team Red, the RX 6900 XT is a great alternative to the RTX 3090. The 6900 XT actually holds the GPU overclocking world record, and in 2021, AMD introduced a liquid-cooled version that runs even faster than the base model. That said, the RTX 3090 Ti comes with features like DLSS and ray tracing.

For performance, the Radeon RX 6800 XT matches the RTX 3080 in most titles with ray tracing turned off. If you’re willing to overclock your graphics card, the 6800 XT actually edges ahead. AMD’s Infinity Cache that shows up on the RX 6800 XT allows the card to hit very high clock speeds, resulting in serious performance gains. It’s best suited for gamers who don’t care about ray tracing, though.

Ray tracing changes things a bit, as DLSS adds a huge boost in performance to Nvidia cards. That said, AMD introduced the Super Resolution feature as part of the FidelityFX suite, which is similar to DLSS. It performs excellently at 1080p, delivering a frame rate above 30 fps in highly demanding games like Metro Exodus. If you’re willing to turn down a few settings, you can hit much higher frame rates.

Although the GTX 1660 Super can hold up in the games releasing today, it can’t use visual features like ray tracing. The card isn’t an RTX card like the other Nvidia options on this list, so it doesn’t come with dedicated ray-tracing cores or support for features like DLSS. Still, for a budget option that can annihilate most games at 1080p, it’s hard arguing with the GTX 1660 Super. Don’t get tripped up by the PCIe version or other specs, either. The GTX 1660 Super is a fine fit for a modern gaming PC.

We recommend sticking with the GTX 1660 Super. The GeForce GTX 1650 is close in the lineup, but it’s far off in terms of performance. The Nvidia GTX 1660 Super is above the minimum specs for the Oculus Rift S, too, so it’s a great option if you’re interested in VR gaming.

Although the GeForce RTX 3060 falls behind its full-scale desktop and mobile counterparts, its real strength lies in not outputting anywhere near the level of heat generated by big-scale GPUs. That means you’ll still find the RTX 3060 in laptops that are sleek and thin and don’t weigh too much. You can see the results in this older Razer Blade that we previously used in testing that weighs just 4.5 pounds and offers performance that in years gone by you’d only find in chunky gaming machines that weigh close to double that.

There are some solid alternatives in this space, with both AMD and Nvidia offering mobile options with greater and lesser performance depending on your needs. In our opinion, RTX 2070 Max-Q offers all the performance most users could want, all in a low-profile chipset. It’s a great solution for those who want optimal video performance from a smaller laptop. Nvidia has stepped things up with the Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition graphics card. This new card is more than a small upgrade to the original RTX 3080 and its 4k performance is faster falling just a fraction behind the RTX 3090. It has a whopping 10,240 CUDA cores, giving it over a 17% increase over the RTX 3080’s 8,704 CUDA cores and bringing it close to the RTX 3090’s 10,496 CUA cores. The RTX 3080 Ti may be running them at slightly lower clocks, but you’ll still see heaps of performance out of this card.

That’s not the only upgrade in store. The RTX 3080 Ti includes 2GB of extra GDDR6X memory and boosts the memory bus to 384-bit, giving it an edge when handling large game assets. Despite the increase in performance, the RTX 3080 Ti maintains the same proportions as the RTX 3080, so you should have no trouble fitting it into your system if you’re upgrading. And, at 350W, it’s only drawing 30W more power than the RTX 3080 before it. If you’re in the market, this card really is one the most powerful that you can find on the market

And then there’s the triple-fan design, which should have no trouble keeping this card cool and quiet, just as the Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3080 did in our review.

What to Look for in a Graphics Card

Below we explain how to pick the right GPU for your display, why there are so many variants of the same Nvidia and AMD graphics cards, and a few factors you should consider when buying. Above all, you should buy the graphics card you need for the display you’re using.

If you’re gaming on a Full HD monitor, it would be a huge waste to buy a component designed to play games at 2160p or 1440p. Likewise, you’ll want a powerful graphics card to drive games playing on that premium 4K gaming monitor or 4K TV.

We’ve laid out what are the best graphics cards to play games at 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p resolutions above, but here are some more general rules. For a decent to high-frame-rate Full HD experience, you should look at parts ranging from the GTX 1650 to the GTX 1660 Ti on Nvidia’s end. If you’re looking at AMD’s family, you’ll want a Radeon RX 5500 or up.

Jumping up to QHD resolutions will require a more capable graphics card, ideally an Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 5600 and up. 4K gaming using a single card is still a tough proposition, but thanks to recent developments it’s actually approachable with the latest graphics cards like the Nvidia RTX 2080 Super and AMD Radeon VII.

Another Variable

Another thing to keep in mind when choosing the right graphics card for your gaming monitor (or vice versa) is what kind of variable refresh rate technology can you take the most advantage of. For the uninitiated, variable refresh rate (VRR) technology basically syncs the number of frames shooting out of your GPU to the frame rate of your display.

This way it isn’t overworking itself for nothing while also helping to eliminate screen tearing on your monitor. Without this VRR tech, your GPU might end up clogging the frame bugger with two or more frames, which your display might then try and display two different shots of gameplay at the same time. If you have a TV and gaming monitor that supports FreeSync, you should get an AMD graphics card.

Alternatively, if you happen to be playing primarily a G-Sync gaming monitor or one of the latest LG C1 OLED TVs then you’ll want an Nvidia card. Luckily for you, the line separating G-Sync and Freesync is quickly disappearing as more and more displays that offer the latter are adding support for the former.

G-Sync-compatible gaming monitors are all the rage now because they offer a tear-free and smooth gameplay experience when connecting to either an AMD and Nvidia graphics card.

Graphics card variants

Ok, you’ve decided which one you want, great! However, even with this monumental decision out of the way, the world of GPUs isn’t done being confusing and daunting just yet. Although there are only two companies—Nvidia and AMD—that actually manufacture the underlying chip, there are dozens of different variants of the same graphics card

For example, when the most recent graphics card launched, the Nvidia GTX 1650, there was a multitude of different versions from Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, EVGA and the list goes on. In this case, while Nvidia may have introduced only one new model, vendors or board partners will introduce their own versions featuring different overclock settings, cooling systems, and other differentiating factors we will explain below.

Length: One of the number one factors you should consider before plopping down cash for that shiny new component is whether it will actually fit. If you’re building your PC in a Mini ITX case, you should be looking at the smallest or mini graphics cards that will actually fit inside.

Overclocking: Most third-party cards—and even Nvidia’s own Founders Edition cards—will often come factory overclocked, and this means the card has been tuned to operate above its rated maximum clock speed. As you might expect, the higher the number the faster it will perform.

At this point, you won’t find many, including the entry-level cards, without some amount of ‘overclocking from the factory.’ However, even without a factory overclock, it’s easy enough do it yourself using software such as EVGA Precision X or MSI Afterburner.

Cooling solutions:

In your quest for the best graphics card, you might have noticed that some models come with one, two, or up to three fans. As you might expect, more fans equal better cooling, but there are also two distinct ways of keeping it chilled. GPUs equipped with a single fan often use a blower-style cooler, which means the card sucks in air and blows it out the back like a leaf blower.

Dual and triple fan setups are often used in conjunction with ‘open-air cooling systems,’ which are designed to move cool air through the open heatsinks and exhaust heat in every direction.

Blower style coolers are typically most useful for PCs built into small Mini ITX cases because they help exhaust heat out of a compact chassis with restricted airflow. If the system you’re building is in a Micro ATX PC case or a larger Mid tower chassis, you’d be better off with an open-air cooled graphics card, as there are more mounting points for multiple case fans to do the brunt of cooling while the card’s own two (or three) fans blow heat off the card itself.

RTX vs GTX: With Turing, Nvidia didn’t just introduce better, faster graphics cards it also debuted the RTX architecture with hardware designed to support real-time ray tracing, and AI-powered supersampling and anti-aliasing (known as Deep Learning Super Sampling).

Thankfully, Nvidia decreed in early April 2019 that you don’t need an RTX card with dedicated RT Cores to process real-time ray tracing. So any of the GTX 16-series cards and (most) older 10-series cards can run games with ray tracing turned on. DLSS is still an RTX exclusive since it requires Tensor cores to function, but it’s a niche performance smoothing feature compared to the strikingly realistic reflections and complex shadows effects that ray tracing produces.

Bargain your way to getting a graphics card

Strangely, one of the more affordable ways to get yourself the latest graphics card is to buy a gaming PC while it’s on sale. Gaming PCs from brands like Asus, Dell, MSI, Acer, and HP will often see discounts for hundreds of dollars off, so not only are you saving a ton of money, you’re also avoiding potential headaches that can accompany a DIY build—and you also get a warranty.

Prebuilt PCs have come a long way, too. They aren’t proprietary machines with randomly soldered-on components. They’re mostly as upgradeable as anything you might put together on your own.

Another way of enjoying the latest graphics cards is through gaming laptops. There are plenty of Nvidia RTX 20- and GTX 16-series gaming laptops out there right now. New GTX gaming laptops have also hit the streets and they’re far more affordable than the RTX-equipped models thanks to the laptops introduced during IFA 2019 like the new Acer Predator Triton 300.

    I must say right away that knowing the technical characteristics of the selected video card does not give an unambiguous idea of ​​its performance, because a lot of factors affect it. According to the characteristics, you can only in general terms understand what we are dealing with, but you really need to compare video cards according to tests on the Internet.

    It just so happens that the performance largely depends on the architecture of the video chip and its internal characteristics, which are not mentioned in the price lists. The same is true for processors. You can take two processors with the same frequency, but they can differ in speed by a factor of two, due to different internal architecture (circuit diagram, in other words).

    Here are the main characteristics of video cards:

    Video chip ( GPU, graphics processor) is the main parameter that affects the speed of 3D graphics processing. But, as I said, its name will not tell you anything, you need to look at comparative tests. Each GPU is designed for its own frequency of operation (like a processor) and has a certain number of streaming, shader, vertex processors and texture units. Knowing their number and frequency, you can roughly compare video cards of the same line and from the same manufacturer (for NVidia and AMD (ATI), the principle of operation is very different).

    The more processors, blocks and frequency, the better. The manufacturing process of the chip is an important characteristic, you can always look at it on any cards. The smaller it is, the greater the performance / power consumption ratio. It is measured in nanometers, for example 14-28nm. By the way, there can be several GPUs. Then a separate fan is used for each GPU.

    Video memory , divided by type into DDR3-4, GDDR4-6. The higher, the better. The old DDR2 memory is no longer used, but DDR3-4 is still put on budget models, it is better to stay away from it. You can pay a little extra and take a card with already noticeably more productive GDDR4 memory.

Do not chase after the amount of memory!

    Interface , such as PCI-Express x16 3.0, is irrelevant. The main thing is that the motherboard supports the same interface or slightly lower.

    The remaining characteristics do not directly affect the performance of the card, for example RAMDAC — the digital-to-analog converter frequency for almost all video cards is 400 MHz and is responsible for the maximum supported screen resolution (400 MHz will be enough for many more years to come). All these parameters can be found using a special program.

    And the «human» characteristic is the relevance of the video card . This means how many years the card will be able to run modern games at medium or maximum settings. For example, you can take a top card from a lineup and it will outlive a few more generations of cards before you consider replacing it. And most likely the reason for the replacement will not be the brakes in the latest games, but the lack of support for the latest version of DirectX or the necessary interface for connecting a monitor or LCD TV.

    «Gags» for the slot in the motherboard

    The most budget video cards are bought just to connect a monitor to it, there is no question of any games, except for the simplest or very old ones. Therefore, they are called plugs PCI-Express slots in the motherboard. In principle, it could well be replaced by an integrated video card, but, in the absence of it, they take inexpensive plugs, which is why they are also called «office».

    These video cards have a video chip cut off from all sides, a cut video memory bus (64 or 128 bits if you’re lucky) and a small amount of video memory. For the sake of justice, it is worth mentioning that such video cards are appreciated by fans of home theaters based on the HTPC (Home Theater Personal Computer). And not in vain, because the «plugs» have a number of advantages:

    These graphics cards often come with passive cooling without a fan. Keep in mind that passively cooled graphics cards are almost never suitable for gaming! They get very hot and with prolonged heating deteriorate or burn. At a minimum, you need to take care of a well-ventilated case, especially in summer.

    When buying, pay attention to the sufficient power of your power supply. If anyone does not know, good graphics cards under load consume more than the entire computer.     you can’t get anything (except for the above models), except for used ones — interesting models here are GTX 1060/1070/1080 (beginner / medium / high level), RTX 2060/2070 (medium / high level) and their improved versions with prefix Ti or Super (preferred).

    The more powerful and modern RTX 3070/3080/3090 models are now too expensive and designed primarily for 4K resolution. If possible, you can consider the first two options, but keep in mind that even they are very hot and voracious, you need a powerful high-quality PSU and a spacious ventilated case.

    As for video editing, it’s not a secret for those who are in the subject for a long time that the use of a video card speeds up video rendering by 5-10 times. But this requires the right video card, since not all models can be used for this purpose. The minimum option today is the GTX 1660, if you are also interested in games, then take the RTX 2060 or higher (optimally RTX 3060).

    2. Video card developers

    Video cards are developed by two large companies: nVidia and AMD.

    nVidia works more closely with game developers and most games are optimized for these cards. That’s why I personally prefer nVidia graphics cards. nVidia graphics cards are sold under the brand name GeForce.

    AMD is not always able to resolve stuttering and glitches in some games. In turn, AMD offers slightly lower prices for its video cards, selling them under the Radeon brand. But in my opinion, the difference in price of 10-20% cannot compensate for the lag in games.

    3. Video card manufacturers

    Video cards designed by both nVidia and AMD are produced by many companies. Brands such as ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte have proven themselves well. I recommend purchasing video cards from these manufacturers. Palit can also be considered as a budget option, they have recently improved their quality quite well.

    4. Warranty

    Due to the fact that they experience high loads and temperatures, modern video cards are not very reliable compared to other computer components. Therefore, choose video cards that have the highest warranty. For a quality video card, the warranty should be 24-36 months. I do not recommend saving on this.

    5. Interface connector

    The interface connector is designed to connect the video card to the motherboard. All modern video cards have a PCI Express slot (PCI-E x16).

    Motherboards also have the PCI Express slot of the same name (PCI-E x16).

    Currently on sale you can find video cards with different versions of this connector: 2.0, 2.1, 3.0, 4.0. They differ only in the bandwidth (speed) of the bus connecting the video card to the motherboard. Each class of video card has its own version of PCI-E, which more than meets the needs of a particular video card. All of them are fully compatible and can be installed on any modern motherboard. Therefore, in most cases, it can be ignored. An exception may be the desire to install several video cards on one computer at once, which we will talk about in this article.

    Very old video cards had an AGP connector and are now almost impossible to find even at a flea market. Such video cards cannot be considered to improve the performance of older computers, as they will not do very well even with games before 2006 release. If you have such an old PC, then upgrading it is impractical.

    6. Video processor

    Each video card has its own video processor (or video chip). Video chips have a different number of universal processors (shader units) and frequency. These characteristics dramatically affect the performance of the video card.

    The weakest of the current nVidia gaming video cards have 1000-1500 shader units with a frequency of about 1500 MHz, they will run modern games in Full HD resolution at medium graphics settings.

    Modern mid-range gaming graphics cards have 2000-3000 shader units with a frequency of about 1700 MHz, they will provide a good frame rate (60 fps) and, accordingly, smoothness in games with FHD / 2K resolution at high settings in most modern games, and heavier ones will stretch at least on medium settings. As a rule, this is the optimal solution in terms of price / performance ratio and the minimum option for 4K resolution.

    Powerful modern video cards have 4000-10000 shader units with a frequency of 1500-1700 MHz. They are best suited for today’s heavy gaming at 2K/4K resolution on ultra graphics. Here the choice depends on your budget — the more powerful, the better. But keep in mind that a more powerful video card needs a powerful processor, a lot of RAM, an expensive high-quality power supply and a large well-ventilated case, which will also seriously affect the budget.

    7. Type and frequency of video memory

    Modern gaming graphics cards are mainly equipped with GDDR5/GDDR5X and higher frequency GDDR6/GDDR6X memory. Older weak video cards could be found with slower GDDR3 memory, but they are no longer suitable for modern games. Some AMD graphics cards had specific HBM memory (low frequency, wide bus).

    Video memory can have different frequencies, which for modern gaming video cards is 14000-20000 MHz. Older video cards are distinguished by a memory frequency of about 7000 MHz, which is already the minimum for today.

    Video memory is also characterized by the width of the data transfer bus. Gaming video cards have a memory bus from 128 to 384 bits. For the middle class, this figure is 192-256 bits.

    AMD video cards with HBM memory had a very wide 4096-bit bus, but a very low frequency of up to 1000 MHz, which, however, eventually gave a comparable bandwidth with GDDR5 memory.

    In principle, you can not pay attention to the type, bit depth and frequency of memory at all, you only need to know its bandwidth (PS), which has replaced everything else and is easy to navigate:

    • 128-192 Gb/s — low RT
    • 256-336 Gb/s — Medium PS
    • 448-936 Gb/s — High PS

    Low memory bandwidth limits the capabilities of the GPU. High bandwidth is redundant, as gaming rarely hits memory. Therefore, you should not take video cards with too slow or chase too fast memory. Optimal in terms of price / performance ratio are video cards with an average bandwidth (256-336 Gb / s), this is enough for all games.

    8. How much video memory is needed

    Even far from the most modern games (such as GTA 4) already required at least 4 GB of video memory, otherwise they simply started to lag. Most modern games can still get by with 6 GB, but can use around 8 GB, which is good for their performance.

    In principle, this volume is sufficient for FHD/2K resolution, but not enough for 4K. For most, a video card with 8 GB of memory will be optimal, 6 GB models should be taken only if there is a serious lack of budget, but 4 GB is an extreme over-budget option, with an even lower volume, some games will not even start.

    9. Video chip production process

    The process technology is the technology by which video chips are produced. The more modern the equipment and production technology, the thinner the technical process. The power consumption and heat dissipation of the video card strongly depend on the process technology by which the video chip is made. The thinner the process technology, the more economical and colder the video card.

    Today’s video chips are manufactured using manufacturing processes ranging from 7 to 28 nanometers (nm). The smaller this value, the better. Everything is simple here, if two video cards have approximately the same performance and cost, then preference should be given to the one with a thinner process technology. Usually it will be a more modern model.

    10. Power consumption of video cards

    The more powerful the video card, the more energy it consumes and the more it heats up. Accordingly, you will need a more powerful and expensive power supply and good ventilation in the computer case.

    Modern entry-level graphics cards consume about 75W, mid-range 120W, high-end 150W, pre-top 180W, top-end 250W. The RTX 3000 series breaks that rule as there’s been a huge jump in performance. Their consumption ranges from 180 to 350 W, which is important to consider when choosing a power supply and case.

    High power consumption is more likely to lead to problems in the power system and overheating. The optimal ratio of power consumption / performance have graphics cards with a capacity of 150-250 watts. If this value is less, then the video card is rather weak, if more, it is too voracious and hot, which is fraught with a quick failure and other problems.

    11. How to find out the characteristics of a video card

    Such characteristics of a video card as the amount and type of video memory, bus width are usually indicated in sellers’ price lists.

    12. Cooling system

    There is a passive and active cooling system for video cards. The passive cooling system consists of only a heatsink and no fans. Such a cooling system is installed on some video cards and it requires thoughtful ventilation inside the computer case. Otherwise, the video card overheats and quickly fails. I do not recommend purchasing such video cards.

    The active cooling system has both a heatsink and one or more fans that move around it. Cooling systems for mid-range and high-end graphics cards often have heat pipes that greatly improve heat dissipation. Such a cooling system is quite efficient and does its job well.

    The turbine cooling system is also quite efficient. The turbine captures a powerful stream of air, drives it through the radiator and throws it outside the computer case. But on very powerful hot graphics cards, under load in heavy games, the turbine can start to hum.

    The main difference between video cards based on the same GPU is the cooling system. The cheapest models can have 1-2 fans and a heatsink without heatpipes, which negatively affects cooling, noise levels, and even performance.

    I recommend purchasing a video card with a more powerful cooling system based on 2-3 large fans and massive heat pipes.

    You can find out about the efficiency of the cooling system and the noise level from tests or user reviews. Excellent graphics card temperature under load 60°, good 70°, maximum acceptable 80°. The temperature should not be allowed to approach 90°, this can potentially lead to malfunctions and premature failure. This will also greatly affect the noise level, usually up to 70 ° video cards remain relatively quiet, but at 80 ° and above they are already noticeably noisy.

    13. Dimensions of video cards

    Video cards differ greatly from each other in overall dimensions, both in length and in thickness. Usually, entry-level video cards are short, middle-class ones are one and a half times longer, powerful video cards can be very long. This should be taken into account when choosing a case for a computer, because if it is not spacious enough, then a large video card may simply not fit into it or greatly interfere with the installation of other components (for example, a hard drive).

    As for the thickness, it is measured in the number of slots (seats) that the video card occupies in the computer case. The cheapest video cards can be single-slot.

    Most video cards take up two slots, often overlapping one motherboard slot, which is located under the video card and is designed to install expansion cards (sound card, network card, TV tuner, etc.).

    If you are planning to buy or already have such devices, then this should be taken into account. But in most cases there are uncovered connectors that can be used. Some video cards with a powerful cooling system can occupy 2. 5 slots (ASUS DUAL, Gigabyte Xtreme, etc.).

    In fact, it can cover three slots, and due to the protrusion behind the mounting plate, it may not fit into any case in width, usually such models require cases with a maximum CPU cooler height of 160 mm or more.

    14. Video card connectors

    Video cards from different manufacturers may have different connectors.

    14.1. External video card connectors

    Video cards may have different connectors for connecting external devices.

    VGA (D-SUB) — for connecting old monitors and projectors, has not been on modern video cards for a long time. If your monitor has only such a connector, then you can connect it to the video card only through an adapter or converter.

    DVI — for connecting old and many modern monitors with the same connector. The photo shows the DVI-D connector, which is equipped with modern video cards and only a digital signal passes through it. Older models may have a DVI-I connector that also carries an analog signal.

    DisplayPort — for connecting modern monitors with the same connector. Required for gaming monitors with high refresh rates (greater than 60Hz).

    HDMI — for connecting modern monitors and TVs. Sound can also be transmitted through it.

    Modern video cards are usually equipped only with DisplayPort and HDMI connectors, it is rare to find DVI-D. Please note that after a while you may need to connect another monitor or TV.

    If you have a monitor that only has a VGA (D-SUB) connector, you can connect it to the DVI-I connector on your video card using a special DVI-VGA adapter.

    Modern video cards do not have a DVI-I connector (there can only be DVI-D), you cannot connect a monitor to them via a DVI-VGA adapter. In this case, only an HDMI-VGA or DP-VGA converter will help, but the image quality will decrease.

    2. Auxiliary power connectors

    Medium to high-end gaming graphics cards have one or two PCI-E auxiliary power connectors.

    These connectors can be 6-pin (6-pin) or 8-pin (8-pin). It should be borne in mind that the power supply must also have the appropriate number of such connectors. But in principle, for these purposes, you can use the Molex-PCI-E adapter, the main thing is that the power supply is of sufficient power.

    The absence of an additional power connector puts a load on the motherboard power bus and can reduce the stability of the video card, so its presence is highly desirable.

    15. Installing multiple video cards

    Some motherboards have 2, 3 or 4 PCI-E slots for installing video cards. This is mainly used to improve performance in games. At the same time, video cards must have special connectors for connecting to each other. There may be one or two.

    If there is only one such connector on the video card, then only two video cards can be connected with it, if there are two connectors, then from 2 to 4 video cards.

    Only video cards from the same manufacturer can be connected — nVidia with nVidia or AMD with AMD. Nvidia calls this technology SLI, AMD calls it CrossFireX. Most motherboards with multiple PCI-E slots support only one of them — either SLI or CrossFireX. That is, on some you can connect only nVidia video cards, on others only AMD. But some more expensive motherboards support both technologies and are not tied to a developer.

    In addition, SLI technology can only use exactly the same video cards, and CrossFireX can use completely different ones, but it usually does not make sense to combine a powerful video card with a weaker one.

    15.1. Disadvantages of Installing Multiple Video Cards

    A computer configuration with multiple video cards has the following disadvantages.

    • decrease in the overall reliability of the computer
    • Compatibility degradation in games
    • need for a more powerful power supply
    • need for enhanced cooling
    • computer noise increase
    • significant increase in the cost of the computer

    Therefore, installing several video cards is not always justified, since instead of two video cards you can buy one more powerful one for the same price, or even cheaper, while avoiding the listed disadvantages. The exception is when building a very powerful computer that uses several expensive graphics cards. For example, two RTX 3080 or RX 6900XT. But this technology has long been a thing of the past, since the developers abandoned it and modern games do not support it, plus for games in 4K, one top-end or even pre-top video card is already quite enough.

    16. Video Card Models

    Video card models often change, but I will tell you about the principles of model numbering, by which you can navigate. Consider video cards that are still widely available on the primary and secondary markets.

    Classes of video cards are indicated conditionally and within their series. With the release of new series, old video cards automatically move to a lower class. They no longer meet modern requirements in terms of performance and support for new technologies. For example, after the release of the 3000 series, the high-end RTX 2070 graphics card should already be considered a mid-range graphics card, etc.

    The letters GTX indicate that video cards belong to the old series without ray tracing support. RTX video cards support ray tracing, which is already used in modern games.     The RX 500 series graphics cards were designed for less powerful gaming PCs.     Enter in Google, Yandex or YouTube several models you want to compare (for example, «RTX 3060 Ti and RX 6700 XT») and get a lot of comparison tests of these video cards.

    Typically, performance in these tests is measured by such a parameter as frames per second (FPS). The average FPS in games should be closer to 60, and the minimum should not be lower than 30, otherwise obvious braking will be noticeable. Tests can be carried out on different graphics settings, from which you can determine at what settings your video card will run games.

    Then look, if one video card is 15-30% more powerful than the other in terms of FPS, and costs 5-10% more, then buy a more powerful one. If the difference in performance (FPS) is 5-10%, and the price is 15-30% higher, then there is no point in overpaying.

    The disadvantage of this method is that the study of these reviews takes some time and the results of tests on different sites and in different games may vary. So I came up with another method that gives fast and fairly accurate results.

    Second way

    You can compare graphics cards from the same manufacturer (nVidia with nVidia or AMD with AMD) using a conditional rating of their performance. In order to calculate this value, you need to multiply the number of shader units of each video card by their frequency and then compare these figures as a percentage. It’s much easier than it looks at first. Let me give you one old example.

    There are 2 video cards:

    1. GeForce GT 560 (336 shader units at 1620 MHz) — $170
    2. GeForce GT 570 (480 shader units at 1464 MHz) — $190

    The rating of the video card 1 = 336 x 1620 = 544320

    The rating of the video card 2 = 480 x 1464 = 702720

    We calculate the difference in performance:

    (702720-544320) / 544320 x 100 = 29. 1 %

    We calculate the difference in the difference in price:

    (190-170) / 170 x 100 = 11.7%

    With a 29% difference in performance, the difference in price is only 11%, so purchasing a second video card looks preferable.

    In further comparisons, follow the rule — if the difference in performance is 15-30%, and in price 5-10%, then buy a more powerful video card, if vice versa — the difference in performance is only 5-10%, and in price 15-30 %, it is better to buy a cheaper one.
