PERFORMANCE

For the testing I’m using the MSI RX 470 4GB Armor and the Gigabyte GTX 1060 3GB G1 Gaming, expect slightly different results with different models. The system that I’m testing with has an Intel i5-7600K CPU overclocked to 4.8GHz in an Gigabyte GA-Z270-Gaming K3 motherboard, along with 16GB of RAM running at DDR4-2400 in dual channel.

Assassin’s Creed Origins

Let’s start out Assassin’s Creed Origins, which was tested with very high settings. In terms of average FPS the 1060 is 28% faster than the RX 470.

Battlefield 1

Battlefield 1 was tested with the built in benchmark using ultra settings, and there was almost no difference between the two graphics cards. The 1060 was just slightly ahead in average FPS, 12% higher at 1080p.

COD: World War II

COD: World War II was tested in campaign mode rather than multiplayer, as it’s easier to consistently reproduce the test run. The 1060 just 8% higher in average frame rate at 1080p.

Destiny 2

Destiny 2 was tested using the built in benchmark with highest settings. At 1080p there was a 21% boost to average FPS with the 1060.

Evil Within 2

Evil Within 2 was also tested using the built in benchmark with ultra settings, there was a 5% boost with the 1060.

Fortnite

Fortnite was tested using the replay feature with the exact same replay on both graphics cards. The average FPS at 1080p saw the 1060 come out 27% ahead of the RX 470.

Hellblade

Hellblade was tested with the built in benchmark at very high settings. Most parts of the game perform a fair bit better than this, so don’t take these results as a good indication of what to expect throughout the entire game, it’s more of a worst case, it does however allow me to perform an accurate comparison. With that in mind, the RX 470 was getting 1.7% higher average FPS over the GTX 1060 at 1080p.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Kingdom Come: Deliverance was also tested using the built in benchmark with high settings. There was less of a difference here, an 1. 4% improvement to average FPS at 1080p with 1060.

Mass Effect: Andromeda

Mass Effect: Andromeda was tested using the built in benchmark at ultra settings. In terms of improvement with the 1060 this game was on the lower side out of the titles tested, I think as it seems to benefit from Nvidia’s Turing architecture. In any case there was an 16% improvement to average FPS at 1080p with the 1060.

Middle Earth: Shadow Of WAR

Middle Earth: Shadow Of WAR was tested with the Ulletical FPS benchmark, and both cards were capable of providing very high frame rates in this test. In this test there was a fairly good 40% boost to average FPS with the 1060 at 1080p.

PUBG

PUBG was tested in the practice range as I can easily perform the same test run compared to playing with bots or other players which will differ every time. This game generally runs quite well. Both GPU were not giving 60FPS.

Star Wars Battlefront

Star Wars Battlefront was tested using the replay feature with the exact same replay at ultra settings. You’ll probably want to stick to 1080p in this game for a decent frame rate, there was a 6% higher average frame rate here with the 1060.

Witcher 3

Witcher 3 is a resource intensive game and was tested with ultra settings. In my opinion this one need a high frame rate to play, I can get by with a solid 60 FPS, so both GPU were performing well. In terms of difference to average frame rate, the 1060 was 13% ahead of the RX 470 at 1080p.

Wolfenstein II

Wolfenstein II was tested with the built in benchmark and ultra settings in use, and is another resource heavy game. At 1080p the 1060 was 6% ahead of the RX 470 in average FPS.

CONCLUSION

Clearly the overall winner is GTX 1060 as it was performing well in almost every game. And I think you should pay 20USD more for GTX 1060. If you were buying today let me know which card you’d pick down in the comments and why, the RX 470 or GTX 1060 3GB.

What customers say about «Key Specs»

Gigabyte Radeon RX 470 DirectX 12 Video Card (GV-RX470WF2-4GD-MI)

  • Great video card for 1080p 60+ fps gaming, got it a few days ago and no issues so far.
  • I couldn’t be happier with this video card. The quality of it feels so much better than any of the other 470’s and it looks so clean.
  • Great video card. Have been running all games, modern and older, at 1080p 60fps or more. Battlefield 1 runs great at ultra settings. It does need some configuration at the first run.
  • In terms of performance this card is great and Gigabyte has done a great job with the cooling — quiet and effective. Not quite as powerful as my 1060 6GB but not far off in terms of gaming performance — impressed. Better in some video editing operations.
  • Works great, pc build and runs great. Very easy to install with instructions. Lights make the pc look cool aswell if you have a clear case.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Founder’s Edition

  • Bought this from Nvidia’s website and so far I have no problem with it. Have an Intel i5 7500, gtx 1060 and 16 GB of RAM and perfectly handles games. 100+ fps in csgo, 80+ in pubg.
  • I purchased this card from NVIDIA’s website since I needed a blower style cooler for my mini-itx case. I’m upgrading from a GTX 645 and oh my the results are fantastic! I can run all of the latest games, maxed out settings at 1080p and get an easy 80+ fps.

Gigabyte Radeon RX 470 DirectX 12 Video Card (GV-RX470WF2-4GD-MI)

  • Of course, you can’t even see that part once it’s in your PC and it looks so good; from the back-plate to the adjustable RGB LED light in front, I’m an extremely happy customer.
  • RGBs and a back-plate make this card feel super solid.
  • Good, quiet card and overclocked well. +80°C before i added more fans to my case and 60-70°C when i added more. The build quality is also great, it feels expensive especially with the backplate.
  • The cooler itself is quite good, with the fans at only 900rpm temps are below 60c and noise levels are good — not inaudible but very quiet.
  • The fans have a bad profile to start, just open up the AMD Graphics software and change the fan profile to fix.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Founder’s Edition

  • Very quiet and it works great on my Alienware X51 R2.
  • Naturally a pointless review bring the rating down for no reason. Let it be known, this is a damn good gpu and hell of a performance bargain. Upgraded from my gtx 760 I’ve had for a year… what a jump. Probably tripled my performance.

What customers say about «Connectivity»

Gigabyte Radeon RX 470 DirectX 12 Video Card (GV-RX470WF2-4GD-MI)

  • It’s a solid video card. Gigabyte didn’t include a cd/dvd with drivers or software, just a booklet which states there’s a cd/dvd in the package which is a lie, so I’m dedcuting a star. You can download drivers and utilities from gigabytes’s website.
  • Connected using a DVI cable and all seemed fine. Started updating the driver and the screen went black… no signal (Windows 10 by the way). I was a bit concerned and it took me a while but the solution was really simple. Just plugged it to my TV via HDMI and got signal.
  • As for the performance of the RX 470, it is beast. I own an Ultrawide Freesync display, and with this card I can easily max out all games I have tried.
  • The first one I got was DOA fan stop light on side was on all the time while fans continued to blow at high speed, couldn’t get any of video out ports to work on different computers and different monitors.
  • Hdmi Port went bad already. Causing the h210 to crash when on a heavy load. Switched to dvi and no issues so far.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Founder’s Edition

  • Only uses about 120w so you don’t need a beefy power supply either.

The EVGA GTX 1060 3GB vs.

the Red Devil RX 470

Intro

The EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB graphics card is a brand new and slightly cut-down version of the GTX 1060 6GB card making it a great choice for playing games at 1920×1080.  This $199 entry-level EVGA GTX 1060 3GB card is powered by Nvidia’s Pascal architecture and it is a competitor to the $199 PowerColor Red Devil RX 470 on AMD’s new Polaris architecture.  As a competitor in this 200 dollar price range, the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB promises excellent performance for virtual reality and for high performance HD gaming.

We reviewed the $259 EVGA GTX 1060 SC 6GB video card recently and it received BTR’s “Good Value” award as best in its class when we compared it to the $299 GTX 1060 Founders Edition and we also put it against the $239 (and up) AMD RX 480. It is an excellent value for gamers looking to max out their games at 1920×1080 and at even higher resolutions. Now we see a new EVGA GTX 1060 3GB card that is priced $60 to $100 below the 6GB version costs while offering many of the same features.

The GTX 1060 SC 6GB card (top) has a larger radiator and better cooling than the 3GV version (bottom).

These new 3GB GTX 1060 cards also feature EVGA ACX cooling technology.  EVGA ACX runs cooler and more quietly than the Founders Edition.

The $199 EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB vs. the $199 PowerColor Red Devil RX 470

The EVGA GeForce GTX 1060s are quite small when compared with their competitors, the PowerColor Red Devil RX 470 and the RX 480. One or two fans serves the GTXes whereas the Polaris RX 4x0s use two or three fans. The EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB is an excellent choice for the HTPC or small form factor PC enthusiast.

(Left) Red Devil RX480, (top center) Red Devil RX 470, (bottom center) EVGA GTX 1060-3GB, (right) EVGA GTX 1060 SC 6GB

For a recap of Nvidia’s Pascal architecture see our GTX 1060 Founders Edition launch article.  This evaluation is focused on performance, and we will compare the EVGA GTX 1060 3GB against the 6GB Founders Edition of the GTX 1060 and against the reference and Red Devil RX 470.   We will also compare the performance of 11 video card configurations including the GTX 970 OC, the GTX 960 OC, the 280X, and the RX 480 to try to determine if the GTX 1060 3GB is held back by its having only 3GB of vRAM.

The EVGA GTX 1060 3GB Gaming Edition

The EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB video card featuring EVGA ACX 2.0 cooling arrived with a retail price of $199.

This EVGA GTX 1060 3GB Gaming is clocked the lowest of the five GTX 1060 3GB EVGA models which range in price from $199 to 259.  It has a basic 3+1 Power Phase design and it uses a single 6-pin PCIe connector compared with the more expensive models which feature more robust power delivery with an 8-pin PCIe connector and better cooling systems.

All EVGA GTX 1060 3GB cards feature ACX fan technology with optimized swept blades, double ball bearings and a low-power motor that delivers more air flow with less power, unlocking additional power for the GPU.  The fan will even shut down when the card is not under load.

Features of EVGA’s GeForce GTX 1060 3GB Gaming Edition:

A major difference between the the GTX 1060 6GB and the 3GB GPUs, besides the amount of vRAM, is that the 1152 CUDA cores in the 3GB version is cut down from the 6GB version’s 1280 CUDA cores.

It is interesting to see that Nvidia did not choose “Ti” as the designation for the GTX 1060 6GB to probably keep their future options open, nor did they use a suffix such as “LE”, or even choose a “GTX 1055” naming for their entry level GTX 1060.  Rather, Nvidia choose 3GB as the only way to differentiate a cut down 1060 with half the vRAM from the original GTX 1060 6GB.  The Boost/base core and memory speeds are the same as is the amount of memory bandwidth so there should not be too much performance difference.

You can find out much more here. Here are the specifications and the details for the EVGA GTX 1060 3GB Gaming edition.

Here are the specifications for the reference Founders Edition of the GTX 1060 6GB:

The EVGA GTX 1060 3GB’s card’s base clock is 1506MHz and boost clock is 1708MHz.  The boost we actually got first rose up to 2025MHz when a game would first start but would stabilize as the GPU temperature increased to around 1822MHz, or 114MHz higher than the guaranteed Boost for this entry level GTX 1060 3GB.  Since the GDDR5 memory is not further overclocked by EVGA, we found that we gained some impressive performance by overclocking the memory clocks +400MHz, to 4404MHz.

From what we can see, the specifications of the EVGA GTX 1060 3GB Gaming Editon are impressive for a $200 video card, and our sample clocked higher than the guaranteed clocks.

Our EVGA GTX 1060 3GB Gaming Edition came directly from EVGA to BTR as a sample, last Monday.  EVGA wants to make it very clear that what they sent us is the same as what you can buy from any etailer.  EVGA sent out this press release:

EVGA was one of the first graphics card companies to offer overclocked graphics cards, and since day one EVGA always delivered the exact same products to reviewers as well as customers. EVGA does not “fake” reviews or send out products with “tweaked” clockspeeds to reviewers. With EVGA Superclocked, FTW and Classified graphics cards, what you see is what you get.

EVGA PrecisionX OC Unlocks automatic overclocking

Our preliminary overclock appears to be stable and it looks pretty good so far, and we will follow up this evaluation with an overclocked-to-the-max EVGA GTX 1060 3GB versus the Red Devil manually overclocked to the max RX 470 4GB to see which one ultimately delivers the highest performance.

The EVGA PrecisionX OC works with Pascal architecture and now combines manual and automatic overclock tuning features to give the end user more options.

Includes Exclusive Features for EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB:

  • DirectX 12 OSD Support – See the on screen display on DirectX 12 games.
  • EVGA OC ScannerX Integration – Automatically find your optimal voltage/frequency curve!
  • K-Boost Function – Maximize your clocks with this exclusive feature.
