The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card was announced at CES 2019. It lowers the bar for entry into the world of hardware ray tracing to $349 for the reference design version.
The novelty received the TU106 GPU from the older GeForce RTX 2070 adapter, but in a stripped-down configuration. The full-fledged TU106-400 has 2304 CUDA cores, 144 texture units, 64 raster units, 288 tensor cores, and 36 RT cores. In the case of the RTX 2060 and TU106-200, the number of CUDAs has decreased to 1920, and texture and raster blocks up to 120 and 48, respectively. There are also fewer specialized blocks: 240 tensor cores and 30 RT cores are active. That is, the GeForce RTX 2060 is 20% weaker than the GeForce RTX 2070 in terms of active computing units. As for the core frequencies, the base reference is 1365 MHz, and the dynamic one is 1680 MHz.
Unfortunately, the memory subsystem also went under the knife: the bus width decreased from 256 to 192 bits, and the volume from 8 to 6 GB. At the same time, GDDR6 memory runs at the same 14 GHz, but the bandwidth has dropped from 448 to 336 GB / s.
The main character of the comparison is the MSI GeForce RTX 2060 VENTUS 6G OC graphics card based on the TU106-200A GPU. The «A» at the end of the name tells us that the chip has a higher overclocking potential and is used in factory overclocked models. In addition, the video card is notable for its 4 + 2-phase power subsystem and a 2-slot cooler. It consists of an aluminum heatsink pierced by multiple heatpipes that are blown by a pair of 86mm Torx turntables.
Thanks to the efficient cooling system in games, the temperature of the GPU did not exceed 73 ° C, and it worked in the range of 1860-1905 MHz without manual manipulations. On average, the novelty will cost $440.
Ready to allocate more budget, it will be interesting to look at the confrontation between the GeForce RTX 2060 and 2070. The latter in this test is represented by the ASUS TURBO-RTX2070-8G model. Thanks to the turbine cooling system, its capabilities will be appreciated by owners of cramped cases. By default, it works with the «Gaming» profile, where the GPU operates in the 1410-1620 MHz range, and 8 GB of GDDR6 memory operates at 14 GHz, which corresponds to the reference frequencies. The average price of a video card is $636.
The previous generation will be honored by the MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Gaming 8G. It has a 10-phase power subsystem and an excellent 2-slot TWIN FROZR VI cooler. The GPU and 8 GB of GDDR5 memory run at NVIDIA recommended frequencies of 1683 MHz and 8 GHz, respectively. Such a video card will cost an average of $507.
The SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon RX Vega56 8G HBM2 will compete in the red camp. The cost of this video card is $722, which is even more than the GeForce RTX 2070 participating in testing, although Vega 56 has already fallen in price in Europe. The video card itself is distinguished by a massive cooler with eight heat pipes and three fans, factory overclocked graphics processor up to 1590 MHz and 8 GB HBM2 memory.

An external system with AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K was used to record gameplay, that is, without loss of performance. And the FPS Monitor program helped us with monitoring.
Let’s move on to testing new blockbusters and hits of the past years, which were mainly launched in Full HD resolution, but some also in Ultra HD with ready-made graphics presets.
Let’s start with the Wolfenstein II with the Mein Leben preset in the Vulkan API, where the GeForce RTX 2060 had no trouble. It confidently outperforms the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti and frankly humiliates the Vega 56, especially in very rare events. In turn, the older RTX 2070 pulls ahead by a maximum of 11%.
Going to 4K requires more than 6 GB of video memory, so the test model is an outsider. And here the GeForce RTX 2070 shows itself in all its glory. For example, its average FPS is almost twice as high as that of the GeForce RTX 2060.
In Ghost Recon Wildlands in Full HD at ultra settings, the picture is rendered in a higher resolution, which allows you to load video cards to the fullest. Bottom line: Vega 56 produced the best indicators of rare and very rare events, but the average speed is lame. All three green cards are equal in drawdowns, but in terms of average FPS, the RTX 2070 is slightly ahead, followed by the RTX 2060 and 1070 Ti.
In the The Division 2 test at maximum graphics settings in 1080p and DirectX 12 mode, the GeForce RTX 2070 leads with a maximum margin of 13%. In turn, the GeForce RTX 2060, 1070 Ti and Vega 56 go head to head.
The picture changes when moving to 4K, where more than 6 GB of video buffer is needed . But unexpectedly for us, the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti grazes the back. Perhaps, not the best optimization of the Pascal microarchitecture for the DirectX 12 API affects. RTX 2060 and Vega 56 are slightly ahead. RTX 2070 is in the lead with a 25% lead over the younger card.
Far Cry New Dawn at maximum settings in Full HD turned out to be an easy run for all test participants.
