The latest MacBook Pro 13-inch is here and heralds a new era for Apple silicon. While the laptop features the same design language as previous MacBook Pros, the Apple M2 processor under its hood makes it the most powerful 13-inch MacBook Pro ever released.

Though the M2 chip isn’t as beastly as the M1 Pro and M1 Max processors, Apple designed it to be more power-efficient. In other words, the new processor provides the MacBook Pro with epic battery life. That isn’t hyperbole, as our testing has shown.

On the Tom’s Guide Battery test, which involves continuous web surfing at 150 nits of screen brightness, the new MacBook Pro 13-inch lasted an epic 18 hours and 20 minutes. This crushes the battery life of any laptop we’ve ever reviewed. In fact, the new MacBook Pro 13-inch seems to have the longest-lasting battery of any consumer-grade laptop on the market.

But what other laptops come close to matching the MacBook Pro 13-inch’s mind-blowing endurance? Below, we’ll briefly go over such devices to see how they stack up.

While Tom’s Guide has reviewed some of the laptops in this write-up, we used sister-site Laptop Mag’s laptops with the best battery life piece as our primary source. Considering how both sites employ the same testing techniques, we believe it’s fair to use their results.

Also, we’re discounting rugged laptops. While some of these machines can last well over 24 hours, they’re in a class of their own.

MacBook Pro 2022 battery life: Which laptops come close?

The MacBook Pro 14-inch has impressive battery life but isn’t as long-lasting as the new MacBook Pro 13-inch. (Image credit: Tom’s Guide)

The only laptop that’s even in the same ballpark in terms of battery life is the 15-inch Dell Latitude 9510, which clocked in with an impressive 18 hours and 17 minutes. Given how it’s only three minutes shy of the MacBook Pro’s battery life, the laptops are fairly evenly matched. You could even argue that they effectively have the same battery life. However, the Dell has a lower-res 1080p display.

The gap widens after that. Laptops like the Dell Latitude 9410 2-in-1 (16:54) and Asus ExpertBook B9450 (16:42) can theoretically last you for an entire workday and then some. The HP Elite Folio (16:21) is also in the 16-hour club. Of course, we can’t forget about last year’s M1-powered MacBook Pro, which lasted for 16 hours and 32 minutes in our testing. At the time, we found the battery life extremely impressive. It still is, but compared to its latest iteration, it doesn’t endure as long.

Laptops like the HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7 and Samsung Galaxy Book Flex 15 stay within the 15-hour range. The MacBook Air with M1 (14:41) and MacBook Pro 14-inch (14:08) provide less battery life, but anything above 14 hours is great. We’d go on, but I think the point is clear: The new MacBook Pro 13-inch delivers unbeatable battery life.

MacBook Pro 2022 battery life: A bright future for long-lasting laptops

The MacBook Pro 13-inch with its M2 chip has set a new standard for laptop battery life. Outside of the aforementioned rugged laptops, nothing defeats it in this category. While it’s fair to criticize the laptop for retaining the dated design of its predecessors, few can speak against its astonishing performance and sheer staying power. It’s easily one of the best laptops on the market.

There was a time when laptops that lasted all day were nothing more than a pipe dream. Now, we’re seeing Apple and Windows laptops with unbelievable battery life. If anything, I want the new M2-powered Apple laptops to set an example for other laptop manufacturers like Dell, HP, Asus, Lenovo and more. The more long-lasting laptops that exist, the better it will be for everyone.

Apple says the upcoming MacBook Air 2022 is rated for 18 hours of battery life. If true, this would put it on par with the MacBook Pro 2022. (Image credit: Future)

Apple is the most influential tech company on Earth. As such, it’s a sure bet that its competitors are looking at the new MacBook Pro and taking notes. This, in turn, will serve to give consumers even better laptops. The prospect is pretty exciting.

I can’t wait to see what the upcoming MacBook Air 2022 is capable of when we put it through our litany tests. I suspect it’ll be another example of what Apple silicon can achieve.

Just in — A strange quirk with the base MacBook Pro M2’s SSD has been discovered — it’s actually slower than the old M1 MacBook Pro.

One of the biggest standout features that we noted in our recent MacBook Pro 13-inch M2 review was its battery life.

The first laptop to launch with Apple’s new M2 Apple Silicon chip delivered easily the best battery life we’ve ever seen from a MacBook at 18 hours and 20 minutes in our Laptop Mag battery test.

Given that outstanding result, we wanted to take a quick look at how the MacBook Pro M2 holds up against the laptops with the best battery life and consider what this might mean for the battery life on the upcoming MacBook Air M2.

We run every laptop that we review through our Laptop Mag Battery Test, which involves continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi with the display at 150 nits of brightness. Depending on your usage that may not align perfectly with your daily real-world results, but it gives us a nice even playing field on which to judge the battery life of the dozens of laptops that we review annually.

MacBook Pro 2022 battery life vs. the Windows champs

The MacBook Pro 2022 has surpassed our previous laptop with the best battery life leader, but you might be surprised by how narrow a victory it was. The Dell Latitude 9510 held on to the top spot until now with 18 hours and 17 minutes, a mere 3 minutes shy of the MacBook Pro’s new high water mark.

I’m not sure that I need to win you over on the notion that the MacBook Pro is the more intriguing option between the two, but there are a few caveats that make its narrow battery life victory more decisive for the MacBook Pro.

The first is that the MacBook starts at $1,299, compared to $1,699 for the base model Latitude 9510. The second is the display, a 15.6-inch 1080p panel for the Dell, while Apple boasts a 13.3-inch display with a vastly denser 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution. Finally, the M2 MacBook Pro absolutely destroys the Dell on performance with a Geekbench 5.4 multi-core score of 8,911 compared to 4,735 for the 9510.

The Asus ExpertBook B9450 and the HP Elite Folio were the two next closest Windows laptops with 16:42 and 16:21, respectively. Both are price competitive with the M2 MacBook Pro, but also feature 1080p displays and from a performance standpoint may as well be stuck in place as they watch the MacBook Pro M2 channel its inner Quicksilver and finish its work before they can even boot up.

What does the MacBook Pro 2022’s battery life mean for the Air 2022?

Despite its undeniably excellent battery life, the MacBook Pro M2 has some drawbacks that have me eagerly awaiting the launch of the MacBook Air M2 next month. While it won’t outlast the MacBook Pro 2022, the M2 chip certainly bodes well for its battery life.

The MacBook Pro 2022 got nearly an 11% boost to its battery life versus its M1-powered predecessor. If we see the MacBook Air 2022 mirror that it should end up with roughly 16 hours and 16 minutes of battery life in our testing. That would be just 16 minutes shy of the MacBook Pro with M1 and while it wouldn’t quite crack the top five on our laptops with the best battery life, it should be a performance beast compared to everything above it on our list.

Apple’s MacBook Pro M2 sent me on a journey to kill its battery

My review of the M2 MacBook Pro went up last Wednesday. But as soon as I got my hands on the device on the prior Thursday, it was clear that running down the battery — one of the most important things a laptop reviewer needs to do — was going to be a Whole Thing.

Reader, I tried. I would use the device all evening and leave it running all night, but it would still have plenty of charge left in the morning, and I’d have to plug it in for testing, abandon it to film, or give it to our video and photo teams for shooting before I could fully drain it down. I did not have a long enough interrupted span of time to continuously use the device. That’s how absurdly long this laptop lasts.

But, with the written review and the video review both live, and a solid evening and subsequent morning with no plans or obligations, last Thursday gave me my first real uninterrupted free time since the review unit had arrived. I decided, when I got home and finished dinner around 7:30PM, that it was time. I was going to kill this thing. I was going to drain this stupid battery down to zero if it was the last thing I did.

I was going to drain this battery if it was the last thing I did

Quickly, some housekeeping. First, this is not the official battery life estimate with which I will ultimately be updating the review. That will be based on multiple trials, and hopefully many that are not as… weird as what I did here. (That said, our battery life test is always a ballpark estimate, and I’ve never pretended it’s anything else. Never treat one review as your only data point, etc. etc.)

Second, while I did really want to kill this battery, I should emphasize that I always want my battery tests to reflect my personal workload — so while there are certainly intense things I could’ve done to kill the battery more quickly, I did take care here not to artificially run anything ridiculous and to stick with programs and tasks that I would actually do on a real day (albeit a more intense real day, in parts).

Anyway, I did run the thing down. And I kept a little diary of the process, which I’m sharing here. This, I hope, will give you some idea of the various things I did on the device as I drained it, and some insight into how fast it might drain if you’re running a workload similar to mine. That said, it is my personal and private diary, so please don’t tell anyone about it.

8:00PM: I am in for the night. I’ve got around a dozen tabs open. I’ve got the screen at medium brightness, with True Tone off. I’ve got Spotify running the “Chill Pop” playlist. The battery is at 100 percent. Unplug. Let’s roll.

8:20PM: Still at 100 percent. I double check to make sure the battery meter is working. It’s getting dark out, so I turn on night light. Don’t judge me, I care about my eyes, you monsters.

8:25PM: The internet is boring. I pull up a short story I’m working on, which is a Google Doc that’s around 20 pages. God, I love how fast this thing loads Google Docs. I’ve still got around a dozen other tabs open.

8:30PM: My friends, we are still at 100 percent. Considering having a character die in my short story, because if this laptop won’t die, somebody’s gotta. I decide against it.

9:00PM: We are at 98 percent. The fear that this thing could last 50 hours is giving me legitimate stress. Like, my Garmin Venu is telling me to chillax.

Challenge accepted.

9:30PM: 95 percent. “I don’t think this thing is ever going to die lol,” I iMessage a friend. “Lol wow,” my friend replies. 9:30PM is our intellectual time to shine.

9:45PM: 91 percent. The “Chill Pop” playlist has run its course. I move on to “Today’s Hits”. Stay by The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber begins playing. Ah, yes. Today’s’ hits.

10:15PM: Hitting a wall with my story, but I leave the Google Doc open in case inspiration strikes. I start running PugetBench for Premiere Pro just to feel something. It’s oddly therapeutic to give the benchmark full control of my computer and try to figure out what ridiculous things it’s doing. Is anything in life really in our hands? Are we not all obscure GPU effects being thrown at random Premiere footage, in a way?

10:30PM: This is around when the Gigabyte Aero 16 would be dying. The MacBook, though, is still very much alive. Anyway, I feel like I’m clearly not taxing this thing hard enough, so I look around for things that might need to be updated. Some of my Adobe apps are out of date, so I set those downloads off. I’ve been wanting to familiarize myself with After Effects, so I play around with that for a bit.

11:59PM: 78 percent. Well, I still don’t understand how to do anything in After Effects, but at least I tried. I’ve also gotten through “Today’s Hits”. Creative Suite is done updating, so I open all the apps I have at once just to see if it will slow the computer down. It doesn’t, of course. I mess around in Lightroom with some photos that I might (but probably will not ever) upload to Instagram, as one does.

A true musical journey.

12:15PM: I do some Swift Playgrounds 4 because I can’t get over how cute the little animations are. I do a Rosetta Stone lesson with Swift Playgrounds 4 running in the background. Look, therapist, you can’t say I’m not working on myself. The screen is starting to feel way too bright, but don’t worry: I will kill my eyes for the sake of the blogs.

12:26AM: 73 percent. I’ve run out of things to do. I am watching old K-pop videos on YouTube. “What if we went to Lollapalooza?” I iMessage a friend. “We are not going to Lollapalooza,” the friend responds.

12:47AM: I’ve wandered back to the short story. I’m very tired, so it’s getting a bit weird. I start downloading some more Adobe software, because you might as well go big. I have no idea what Bridge is, but I’m sure I can find a use for it.

2:13AM: 63 percent. Calling it a night. I leave a YouTube video (“Fireplace 10 Hours Full HD”, one of my favorites, the vibes are immaculate) running as well as the “Chill Hits” Spotify playlist. Please die, I think at the device, as I fall asleep with it beside my head. It’s in God’s hands now.

8:15AM: I wake up because construction is going on outside, which is the New York City 4-D experience. The MacBook Pro is still going strong at 36 percent. I start PugetBench to give it something to do and go back to sleep (I have the morning off).

10:26AM: I wake up again, this time because I’m stressed that I made a mistake in a draft I filed yesterday. This is just a thing I worry about. I pull up the draft and read through it. No mistake. Crisis averted. Back to bed. Laptop at 21 percent, various things still running.

Red, the blood of laptop reviewers who have almost, almost completed their battery run

11:40AM: I wake up for the final time, and it’s the first thing my bleary eyes see: The red battery. That glorious, glorious red. Red, the blood of laptop reviewers who have almost, almost completed their battery run. The laptop is at 9 percent. We are so close, everyone. So close.

11:42AM: Time to kill this thing dead. I open Slack. I keep Spotify blasting. I open three different email tabs, a bunch of blog posts, a video, iMessage, Sticky Notes, Lightroom. I start downloading a game on Steam. I work on my review of another computer, clicking around a whole bunch of other reviews that are covered in ads. It’s going to die any minute now, I think, with an eye on the red battery meter.

12:30PM: Well, the final stretch takes a lot longer than I thought it would. But after 16 hours, 30 minutes, and 39 seconds, the M2 MacBook Pro is done for. It died in the middle of playing Tomorrow X Together’s Can’t You See Me music video, right as they’re setting a building on fire. There should be a metaphor in there somewhere, but I’m too tired to find it.

Don’t worry — I’ll run it down a few more times to get you a more rigorous result.

So, how long does a MacBook Pro battery last? I wanted to know exactly how many years a MacBook Pro battery will last before a replacement would be necessary (on average).

Here’s how long MacBook Pro batteries last:

A MacBook Pro battery will last 5 years on average with moderate use before replacement is needed. It could last a few years longer if the battery is calibrated monthly and stored at 50% charge for shutdowns longer than 72 hours. A single charge typically lasts 4-6 hours on average.

My Macbook Pro battery started lasting 4-6 hours on a single charge just a few months after purchase. (Which is far better than the Asus Zenbook I used; which lasted barely 3 hours without being plugged in after 3 months).

I’ll be covering in this post how and why chrome and non-Apple apps drain your battery as well as battery replacement statistics. I’ll also be showing you how to make your MacBook Pro battery last longer through calibration and battery life cycle count.

What you may not know about the MacBook battery

What most don’t know, is that how long a Macbook Pro battery will last is strongly based on how you use your laptop.

Battery charge claims of 9 to 11 hours are typically marketing tactics that are based on a brand new MacBook with minimal apps being used. These ‘experts’ are basing these numbers from using a low brightness display combined with Apple only apps that are designed to save battery, such as Safari and Apple TV.

It’s possible that as a marketing tactic, many experts claim a single charge battery lifespans of 9-11 hours, but the truth is they’re running the most minimal settings possible and claiming a longer battery life.

How many years does a MacBook Pro Battery Last?

A MacBook Pro battery will last roughly 5 years or so before it can no longer hold a charge. After 3 or 4 years you’re likely to have to have to on the charger most of the time. This could be different for those who calibrate their battery consistently, as I did not.

Calibrating your battery will help it both last for more years while preventing a swollen battery from it being plugged in all the time. I’ll be covering how you can do this in detail further in this article.

How long does a MacBook battery last on a single charge

Initially, my MacBook Pro lasted 7 hours per single charge, however when I used my Mac for 3.5 hours a day my MacBook Pro battery dropped to 4-6 hours per charge after a few months. I personally recorded myself on my own MacBook Pro the charge lasted and will share the results with you below.

Here is a chart on how long my MacBook Pro battery lasted over time per charge:

Time How long Macbook Battery lasts per charge
1 Month 7 hour charge
6 Months 5 hour charge
1 Year 5 hour charge
2 Year 4 hour charge
3 Year 3 hour charge
4 Year 1 hour charge
5 Year 20 min charge

I did not calibrate my MacBook battery In the results above. I wish I had!

As you can see from the chart above my Macbook couldn’t hold a strong charge without it being plugged in after roughly 5 years in. This happened to my Asus Zenbook at the 1 year mark. The MacBook Air battery (subjectively) was 5x stronger than the Zenbook.

If you keep your battery at 50% battery life when shutting it down for more than 72 hours you could greatly increase your battery. (source)

My MacBook lasted far longer than my laptops using windows

The battery life of the Asus ZenBook laptop I owned advertised a 12 hour charge. After one year it wouldn’t last without it being plugged in. It took my MacBook 5 years to get to that point.

MacBook Air, users can expect a slight bit longer battery duration regarding both lifespan and charge. The reason for this is discussed in our article: How many years does a MacBook Air battery last?

How long does a MacBook Pro battery last before replacement

How long does a MacBook battery last before replacement? The truth is that the MacBook Pro battery will likely last you 5 years before replacement, however at 4 years in I was only able to use my laptop for 1-2 hours max before I had to plug the power cord back in. Most will want to replace the battery at this time if they are out working on their laptops at coffee shops or WeWork.

Is it worth replacing a MacBook Pro battery?

If you are not looking to buy a new laptop, then it is worth replacing your MacBook Pro battery when there are no other performance issues and if your MacBook is younger than 6 years old. Many may want a new laptop and the battery running out is just a good reason to make the upgrade.

Whats interesting is theres a similar debate on iPhone models. The answer is slightly different, but usually the battery becomes an issue when you see it draining quickly overnight. We go over this on our How to Fix iPhone Battery Draining Overnight resource.

When to replace a Macbook Pro battery

Most replace their battery at the 5 year mark. It could last you much longer if you took care of your battery and use Safari (rather than chrome) with minimal apps running in the background.

When considering a MacBook battery replacement: keep in mind that If your laptop is over 8 years old it may not be able to update to the latest operating system.

Did you know…

Macbook Pros made before 2012 can’t update to Catalina since these older laptops are no longer supported. Catalina was released in 2019.

How much does a MacBook Pro battery cost

If you don’t have Apple care then the cost of a new battery is $129 -$199 depending on the MacBook model. (source) The cost of Apple care could be anywhere from $249 – $380 depending on your Mac and only lasts a limited number of years.

A MacBook Pro replacement of course battery costs much less than a new laptop. Here’s how much a MacBook Pro battery costs:

MacBook Pro model Cost of MacBook Pro battery replacement – Apple (No Warranty)
13-inch MacBook Pro (Retina) $199
15-inch MacBook Pro (Retina) $199
16-inch MacBook Pro $199
13-inch MacBook Pro $129
15-inch MacBook Pro $129
17-inch MacBook Pro (Vintage) $179

Cheapest way to replace a MacBook Pro Battery

  • Expensive, but safe: Visiting the Apple store and get it serviced will ensure a safe replacement, but pricey.
  • Cheaper, but less safe: You can go to a local computer repair shop and get it fixed for fairly cheap.
  • Super cheap, but risky: Grab the correct MacBook battery online and do it yourself. There are plenty of useful MacBook Pro replacement YouTube guides to help you through this.

My MacBook pro battery is draining fast

Why is your Macbook Pro battery dying so fast? Its possible you have background apps running, haven’t been calibrating it monthly, have had it for a few years, or have a combination of all three occuring. If you stored your MacBook at 0% battery life for months at a time, it may be tough to save your battery.

For those whose MacBook Pro battery is draining quickly, you can use these numbers as a loose benchmark when judging if there’s something seriously wrong with your laptop battery or not.

If you’re iPhone battery is drained quickly, see our post: How to Fix iPhone Battery Draining Overnight

How to fix your MacBook Pro battery draining fast:

  • Put it into sleep mode if you’re using it the next day. Do not shut it down
  • Shut it down with 50% battery life if you’re not using your battery for longer than 3 days.
  • Never store it at 0% battery for longer than a few hours.
  • Calibrate your battery once a month

If you’re shutting down your MacBook every night [instead of sleep mode], then you aren’t preserving battery life as best possible. When not using your MacBook for 3 days or longer, it’s best to shut it down at 50% battery life.

According to research via Apple support, you should put your MacBook into sleep mode only when you plan to use it again within the next day or two. If you’re not using your MacBook 72 hours or longer, then your battery will benefit most by having it stored at 50% in sleep mode (do not shut it down).

For more on this, see our post: How Often Should I Shut Down my MacBook?

Battery Saving Tip (Safari vs Chrome)

When it comes to Mac… the Safari browser will use significantly less battery (and resources) than Google Chrome. Apple applications are designed to work very efficiently with your Mac.

How to keep a MacBook from dying fast

  1. Put your MacBook in energy saver mode
  2. Use Safari browse rather than chrome
  3. Shut off WiFi if you aren’t using it
  4. Set screen brightness as low as visually comfortable
  5. Shut off all background apps (activity monitor app)

MacBook Pro battery draining fast while sleeping

Many Mac users are left wondering why their battery is dying so fast when they’re sleeping or when closed. Fortunately, this is not a new problem and there are some very good reasons for this that could be caused by a variety of different factors that I’ll be discussing below.

Here is why your MacBook Pro battery is draining fast while sleeping or when closed:

Bluetooth is waking up your MacBook intermittently

If your battery is draining fast while you sleep, the most common cause is that a bluetooth connection is waking up your Macbook at night or when it sleeps. Your MacBook may be turning on randomly at night. This is because bluetooth is connected to keyboard, mouse, headset, etc) one way is to just disable it. Another is to disable allow bluetooth to wake this computer

Power Nap while plugged into a power adapter is enabled

When your battery is dying quickly when its closed or sleeping it could be related to this setting being enabled. This setting updates apps such as mail, calendar, iCloud updates, and more while sleeping and could turn your Mac on and waste battery throughout the night.

  • Disable this unecessary option by hovering over your battery icon on your screen and selecting ‘Open energy saver preferences’, then simply unchecking the box.
Background apps are draining your MacBook Pro’s battery

You can of course force quit the apps you aren’t using, but are running if needed in the activity monitor app. In addition. it’s important you ensure your laptop isn’t launching unnecessary programs when it starts up, which run in the background. A good example of this could be Adobe cloud, a VPN app or a torrent downloader.

Reset PRAM and NVRAM

If your battery is still draining overnight, then you could try reseting your MacBook’s NVRAM and PRAM. NVRAM is essentially memory that your laptop uses to store and retrieve specific settings when needed for quick access. This includes the settings you have set for sound, display resolution, time zone and more. PRAM is very similar. You can learn more on how to reset these on the Apple website.

  • To reset PRAM/NVRAM, you can hold the following commands for 20 seconds when your Mac starts up: option, command, P and R.
Reset your Mac back to factory settings optional.

If I see a ton of old apps running in the background on my MacBook of many years, its not uncommon for me to do a full factory settings reset if deleting the apps and the other fixes listed didn’t solve the problem. This is of course an optional, but useful fix if you’re sure this is the case. Many may not advise this and you may not want to take the time to back everything up to a USB, but it can feel refreshing to start new.

Update your Mac to the latest OS

A commonly overlooked solution… Updating to the latest operating software can solve a whole heap of trouble in addition to reduce vulnerabilities. I’ve seen many do a MacBook OS update and see a noticeable difference in battery life. However, these were people who never update their Mac and were behind by several updates.

How to Fix Abnormal Battery Drain in MacOS Big Sur & Monterey

Mac users are attempting to fix abnormal battery drain specifically in MacOs Big Sur and Monterey. Mac users will be required to understand that in Big Sur, the Pro and Air drain battery abnormally on occasion and for no reason at all. Some believe that resetting the SMC and PRAM can help run a type of ‘maintenance’ related to battery, fans, and other features.

Utilizing a data recovery tool may prove essential when using BigSur and Monterey. I personally use a software called Iboysoft. You can see a how-to article about MacOS big Sur they provide which discusses how to fix abnormal battery drain.

Another interesting thing to be aware of, is that in recent updates to the macOS (Catalina being one of them), Apple decided to divide the disk for startup into 2 volumes, both separated. This causes an odd backup situation if you choose to do so and softwares like the one listed can help with a multitude of odd MacOS issues.

If you are still curious about increasing the battery health of the Macbook Pro, calibrating can help extend battery life, lets take a look.

MacBook Pro battery calibration to extend battery life

It is important to calibrate your MacBook Pro battery every few months at minimum. Calibrating your battery could lead to noticeable increase in battery duration and charge since calibration allows your laptop to manage its battery more efficiently and accurately. I personally calibrate it once every few months and my new battery is holding up much better than my old one.

There is some opinions, by Battery University that claim to never discharge your Mac battery to zero if possible and to simply let it drop to half battery and charge it in between uses. I personally choose to calibrate my battery every few months and have seen an observable difference so far.

How to calibrate a Macbook Pro battery

Here’s how to calibrate your MacBook Pro battery:

  1. Charge MacBook Pro battery to 100%
  2. Unplug power and use the laptop until 0% (goes into sleep)
  3. Wait 5-7 hours and charge your battery to 100% (uninterrupted)
  4. Success! You’re battery is now calibrated

What this essentially does is allow your battery to understand how it’s being used better energy wise. Your system will now gauge/set it’s full charge and full discharge as ‘anchors’ regarding battery capabilities, which in turn makes your MacBook’s internal battery management system more smart.

When polled, most users agreed they either did not calibrate their battery or even know it was something they should be doing.

MacBook Pro battery life cycle count

A battery with over a 1000 cycles is claimed to have roughly 80% of its original battery health, however my personal MacBook was at 50% of its original battery health when I observed it at 1000 cycles. The claim of 80% was not accurate in my case… keep in mind I did use my MacBook for 3.5+ hours every day.

A full battery cycle is when your MacBook uses the amount of energy of one full charge. If you’re using a MacBook and the power is plugged in, then your laptop’s internal system will still be able to gauge the use of a full charge based on how much energy its using. So even if your battery hits 0% your charges will still be tracked accurately.

See our post: 5 Best Macbook for Kids

What is a good battery cycle count MacBook Pro

Since a MacBook Pro battery is estimated to have 80% of its original battery health at 1000 cycles, then 200 cycles would mean the battery is 1/5th worn. So, logically If you want your battery to last you 5 years, then 200 cycles per year makes sense, which is a very common cycle number per year.

What is the MacBook pro battery life cycle count limit

The MacBook Pro battery cycle count limit is 1000. Using your battery after this limit will work… just not as well. Knowing how many charges could help you judge when to replace your MacBook Pro battery.

You can use a [Mac] battery after it reaches its maximum cycle count, but you may notice a reduction in your battery life.

FAQ MacBook Pro Battery Questions

Below you’ll find answers to both common and uncommon MacBook Pro battery questions. If you have a question not on this list please hit contact on this site and send me your question, I will do my best to update you and add it to this FAQ.

Continue reading: How long does a MacBook Air last?

  • Should I leave my MacBook Pro plugged in all the time?

No, because by constantly charging your battery your maximum battery capacity will decline over time. Let your MacBook battery drop to around 50% and charge it back to 100%. When sleeping or shutting down your laptop make sure its at roughly 50% life for optimal battery health.

  • How long should I charge my MacBook Pro for the first time?

Use your MacBook until it hits 30%-50% and then charge it to full. Let it stay at 100% for 2 hours. After that, try to keep your MacBook battery at 50% life if possible when storing it in sleep mode, shutting down overnight or before charging it back to 100% during sessions.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro turn on randomly at night?

You have a bluetooth or another connection interfering overnight when sleeping (keyboard, mouse, sound bar, etc). It’s also possible that your MacBook has the “Power Nap while plugged into a power adapter” option enabled. You can disable this under energy saver preferences when clicking on the battery icon at the top right of your screen.

  • Why is my Macbook Pro battery not holding a charge anymore?

Possibilities of a battery not holding a charge include having background apps running, lack of battery calibration, high battery cycle count (800-1000), or have a combination of all of these. If you left your battery at 0% (fully discharged) for months, it could be why your battery can’t hold a charge anymore.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro battery jump or drop quickly all of a sudden

When a MacBook battery drops or jumps all of a sudden during use, you likely have not had your batter calibrated recently or have an app that is using a lot of energy. It’s common to see a battery jump when you have multiple tabs of a web browser running for long periods of time. Quit the browser from the Mac dock and restart it.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro battery blinking light 3 times

It’s blinking because the SMC needs to be reset. You can reset the SMC by holding command + option + shift + power. This is a very old, recurring, somehwat uncommon occurrence based on internet documentation.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro battery not charging?

You likely have a fault battery, adapter or logic board. Try using a different charger if you have one. If you find the battery to be scorching hot, then let it rest for 5-10 hours and try again. If the battery is not hot, try an SMC reset by holding commands + option + shift + power. If these do not work, then you may need to bring this to an Apple store.

Conclusion

Our research has shown that a MacBook Pro battery will last an average of 5 years before replacement! I’ve found that a single charge lasts on average 5-7 hours for Macbook Pros moderately used and under 3 years old. After this, the battery life declines. At 5 years in my MacBook could no longer hold a charge anymore without it being plugged.

Calibration can help your MacBook Pro manage it’s battery health more efficiently by gauging the fully charged and discharged states more accurately. Turning off Background apps, WiFi, using Safari rather than Chrome browser and having a battery life cycle under 1000 could help save your MacBook’s battery. A MacBook Pro replacement battery could cost you anywhere from $129 to $199 depending on the Model if you do not have Apple Care or is out of warranty.

Overnight, you’ll want to keep your MacBook Pro battery stored at 50% battery life if possible while using the sleep mode… not shutdown mode. MacBook Pro owners should only shutdown their laptops if they plan to leave it off for longer than 3 days (72 hours). Never leave your MacBook Pro battery discharged (0% battery) for longer than few hours as it could cause long term battery health decline. waking up at night randomly.

The coolest part. Advanced thermal systems move 50 percent more air, even at lower fan speeds. And thanks to the efficiency of Apple silicon, the fans never turn on for many tasks you do every day.

Fast. And vast. Get jaw-dropping 7.4GB/s read speeds23 from the up to 8TB SSD — up to two times faster than the previous generation. 24 So you can open 8K videos instantly or store hundreds of thousands of RAW photos at once.

A whole new power structure.

The new MacBook Pro is the first to put a system on a chip (SoC) into a pro notebook. Other pro systems use power-hungry CPUs, discrete GPUs, and multiple chips, each working separately. M1 Pro and M1 Max combine the CPU, GPU, I/O, and Neural Engine in a single SoC with unified memory. As a result, M1 Pro and M1 Max not only crush intensive workflows that were once impossible on a notebook — they also provide incredible battery life.

Connected at the chip. Other pro notebooks need to copy data back and forth over a slower interface. Not the new MacBook Pro. Its CPU and GPU share a single pool of unified memory. That means every part of the chip connects to data and memory without needing to copy it, so everything you do is faster and more efficient.

Optimize battery life

Notebook battery life varies by hardware configuration and usage. Here are some settings and actions you can take to get the most out of your computer’s battery.

Check your battery settings

The Battery panel in System Preferences has settings to help you save your Mac notebook’s battery. To view battery settings, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Battery or Power Saver, then select Battery in the sidebar.

This image is from macOS Monterey. Some features, such as Automatic Graphics Switching and Power Nap, are not available on all Mac laptops or all versions of macOS.

For maximum battery life, use the following settings:

  • Select the Dim screen slightly when on battery power check box. This setting allows your Mac to adjust its display brightness to 75% when the computer is unplugged.
  • Clear the Enable Power Nap when on battery power check box. This setting prevents your Mac from checking for mail or other iCloud updates while it sleeps, which increases standby time.
  • Select the Automatic Graphics Switching check box. This setting allows MacBook Pro models with multiple GPUs to automatically switch between GPUs to improve battery life.
  • Select the Power Save Mode check box. This setting reduces power consumption to extend battery life.

Display brightness adjustment

By default, the display automatically adjusts its brightness to save power. After you turn off auto brightness, you should turn it back on later to save battery life. To set automatic brightness control, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Displays, and then select the Adjust brightness automatically check box. Learn how to manually adjust brightness.

Check battery status

You can check battery status in battery settings or in the Battery Health menu:

  • In macOS Big Sur, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Battery, select Battery in the sidebar ”, then press the Battery Status button.
  • On macOS Catalina or earlier, Option-click the battery icon in the menu bar to open the battery status menu.

One of the following status indicators will be displayed in the menu.

  • «Normal». The battery is correct.
  • «Service Recommended». The battery is not holding a charge as well as when it was new, or is not working properly. You can continue to use your Mac, but you must take it to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for battery diagnostics.

Contact Apple for battery service.

If the battery’s maximum charge has decreased over time, or the battery needs service, the menu might show «Replace Soon», «Replacement Needed», or «Service Needed» (in earlier versions of macOS). If reduced battery capacity is affecting your performance, contact your Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

While there are third party battery health applications available, such software data may not be accurate and is not a reliable indicator of reduced system battery life. The most reliable information is in the battery status menu described above.

Diagnosing battery problems

Learn how to check your hardware and identify high power consuming apps or features.

Run diagnostics

Check battery status menu

This menu displays the current charge level and whether the battery is currently being charged. This menu is located on the right side of the menu bar.

The battery status menu also shows if the display or some applications are using a lot of power. You can also close some of the apps on this list to save power.

If you’re using Optimized Battery Charging on macOS Big Sur or later, you’ll see additional information when you connect your Mac to power, such as whether charging is paused or when the battery is fully charged. If charging is paused but you want your Mac to fully charge faster, click Fully Charge Now.

Solve charging problems

Get help with other issues, such as if your Mac doesn’t recognize the power adapter or won’t charge to 100%.

If your Mac won’t charge

Make sure you have the correct AC power adapter connected to your computer. A power adapter rated for less power than the device requires may not charge your computer well. If you’re not sure which power adapter is right for your Mac, learn how to identify the power adapter for your Mac.

If you need more help, learn what to do if your USB-C power adapter isn’t charging your Mac laptop or MagSafe cable, or the power adapter isn’t working. If the problem persists, turn off your Mac, close the display for 30 seconds, then try charging again. Or, if you have an Intel-based Mac, reset the SMC.

If your Mac won’t charge to 100%

If you’re using Optimized Battery Charging on macOS Big Sur or later, or you’re using macOS Catalina or earlier, sometimes your battery may not show a fully charged (100%) state in macOS, even if the power adapter has been connected for a long time. This is normal behavior. It helps extend the overall battery life.

If charging is paused and you want your Mac to fully charge as quickly as possible, learn how to resume charging.

Mac Notebook Battery Service

MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro built-in batteries should only be replaced by Apple Authorized Service Providers, Apple Stores, or independent repair providers using genuine Apple replacement parts. Repairs performed by unauthorized persons or using non-genuine Apple parts may damage the equipment and such damage is not covered by the warranty. Genuine Apple Parts are also available for out-of-warranty DIY repairs.

Some older Mac notebooks have removable batteries that you can replace yourself. For assistance with servicing a removable battery, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider or an Apple Retail Store.

ISVs have access to original parts, tools, training, service manuals, diagnostics, and Apple resources. Repairs performed by an independent repair provider are not covered by Apple’s warranty or AppleCare agreements, but may be covered by the provider’s own warranty. The Self-Repair option gives customers access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and repair guides so that those who struggle with electronic device repairs can complete out-of-warranty repairs on their own. Self Repair is currently available in the United States for select Mac models released in 2020 or later. To view repair manuals and order replacement parts for the respective models, go to the Self Repair page.

Battery Warranty Information

Apple’s one-year limited warranty includes the right to replace a defective battery. If you purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan for your Mac notebook, Apple will replace the notebook battery free of charge if its capacity falls below 80% of its original capacity. If the customer is not eligible for service, the battery can be replaced for a fee.

Battery as a consumable item using the example of a MacBook Pro

Hello.

While looking through the recommendation feed in Google Chrome, I came across an article about a defective battery in the MacBook Air on M1. I expected that I would really see a story about marriage, but the article described the normal aging of the battery, which the author considered anomalous and was very worried about this. For two years of using a laptop, its capacity has decreased by 14%, the person considered this a terrible horror and started moaning. With 158 charge-discharge cycles, frequent battery operation, it seemed to him that this was very little. Moreover, Apple promises a drop in battery capacity up to 80% after 1000 charge-discharge cycles.

Decided to check my MacBook Pro, it’s two years old, I use it every day, sometimes ten hours, sometimes much less. We go into the battery settings, look at the residual capacity.

I have lost 8% capacity in two years, 142 charge/discharge cycles as shown in MacOS software. It is important to note here that Apple shows exactly full cycles, partial charging is ignored here. The DriveDX application shows a more accurate number of cycles (information is also taken from the system), there I have 223 cycles, at the same time you can see the total operating time.

Apple’s implementation of these settings in macOS makes me happy, as you explicitly monitor your battery health, something that’s missing from other companies’ computers and most smartphones. It is important to understand the current capacity of your battery, as the operating time of the device depends on it. For example, I looked at my Fold3 in the service, where they could tell how I used it this year:

  • 685 charge-discharge cycles;
  • Capacity 74% of nominal.

Such a large number of charge-discharge cycles is due to two features. The first is travel, when I use the device both in the tail and in the mane, I have a lot of calls, conferences. Secondly, in the car I’m used to throwing my smartphone on the charging mat, which contributes. In a word, I do not take care of the device’s battery, as I consider it a consumable. Exactly the same attitude to any device, since the battery cannot be eternal and retain its characteristics when used.

This does not mean that batteries in electronics should be treated thoughtlessly and not created the right operating conditions for them. Today, many manufacturers offer gentle charging, when your device quickly gains charge up to 80%, but then charging is slow.

I don’t have a task to quickly charge the device, especially the computer, most of the time it is connected to the network. That’s why I use this setting. When using the bundled charger, third-party devices can adversely affect both charging speed and battery life.

Briefly, battery life is adversely affected by extreme temperatures, both cold and hot. It is not worth charging the battery in such conditions, if you do not have a vital need, focus on room temperature, where the battery feels best.

Battery wear depends on many factors: the temperature of the device, how you use it, dozens of factors, if not hundreds. For one person, for a hundred cycles, the deterioration of the battery can be 2%, for another, 10%. It is impossible to find a common denominator, in addition to charge-discharge cycles, other parameters also affect the situation.

The main thing to remember is that the battery is a consumable item and should be treated as such. It’s okay that she loses her charge level, no. It’s scary if the battery is defective and swells, this can be a problem. Such a battery needs to be replaced urgently, it is better to have it done at an authorized service center, especially since battery replacement is usually relatively inexpensive.

It really confuses me that people who buy expensive MacBook Pros are looking for a battery replacement in the basement near the house, it’s cheaper there! When buying expensive equipment, you need to be ready to buy original spare parts, including a battery, this is definitely not worth saving on. For old laptops, this is not always possible, and then the choice of a copy of the battery from the Chinese is at least somehow justified. In other cases, this is not good. Do not save on a normal battery, when buying a Chinese battery, you will never be sure what you got. A kind of lottery, it can be good, or it can be very bad, and you will damage your device.

When we buy a car, we know that we need to fill it up. With batteries in electronics, the story is about the same, but, among other things, their service life is limited, they are far from eternal. Believing marketing claims that the battery will last 1000 cycles and its capacity will drop by only 20% is not worth it. On the other hand, if during the first year this happened to the MacBook, then you will have the battery replaced under warranty. But this almost never happens.

In Europe, they want to pass a law that will oblige smartphone manufacturers to provide at least 500 battery charge cycles and drop its capacity to 83% or more. The beginning is good, but we do not have a single and independent meter for the number of cycles and capacity. Most manufacturers will simply begin to account for the number of cycles differently, which will avoid this law. And the consumer will be the loser, because he will not understand what is happening with his battery.

Either such a law will force manufacturers to install more expensive, high-quality batteries, which, in turn, will lead to an increase in prices for smartphones (up to 3-5% on store shelves). But such a way of developing the situation looks unlikely, I do not believe in it.

Remember the simple truth: the battery is a consumable item. And then you will not be nervous that the battery capacity has dropped on your MacBook. On my previous MacBook Pro, the battery lasted almost seven years before asking for a replacement. Decent time, in my opinion. The ten-year-old Lenovo ThinkPad X1 still has a battery life, as my child doesn’t use it very much. In a word, it all depends on the manufacturer, as well as on how you use the device. Don’t be afraid to change batteries at service centers or yourself if you know what you’re doing (for example, replacing batteries in a vacuum cleaner is not that difficult). But do not believe that batteries can last forever, this is self-deception.

Properly charging your MacBook Pro M1 will extend battery life

Electronics from Apple stands out for its quality and rather high cost. Technologies also differ from competitors, and therefore “apple” devices require different approaches than analogues from other manufacturers. The most common question that comes up is regarding the correct charging of the MacBook Pro M1. The most important thing is the life of the battery, as well as the speed of its charging and battery life. Let’s figure out how to properly charge a MacBook.

First charge

New models of gadgets are produced on the basis of modern chemical technologies, which significantly increases the battery life. The capacity of the device is reduced to 80% of the initial only after a thousand full recharge cycles.

With the correct operation of the gadget, adaptive charging allows you to increase the life of the device up to 5 years. The first charge of the macbook battery is best done using the original charger or a certified adapter from another manufacturer. You need to charge the battery until it is fully charged and be sure to update the software to the new version. It also prolongs the life of the laptop, as updates often include energy-saving technologies. Periodically, the «apple» company offers software that will help in optimizing energy consumption.

When using for the first time, experts recommend:

• do not disconnect from the power source until the gadget setup is completed, as this process requires more electricity than normal activities. Charging should be 100%;

• during daily use of the device, it is better to work from the battery for 2-3 hours, and then you can switch to charging from the network;

• if the laptop is constantly connected to the network, then once a month the device should be completely discharged. This cycle can prolong battery life.

When the MacBook is fully charged to 100%, it can work on it up to 50% discharge, and then put it on charge again.

Energy saving settings

The MacBook Pro M1 battery is rated for an average of 1,000 cycles. At the same time, the first 500 of them show maximum performance, and after a while the battery wears out and, as a result, the operating time from it decreases.

How to properly use an apple laptop battery so that it lasts as long as possible? There are optimal settings to reduce power consumption and extend the life of the device:

• The level of energy consumption can be determined from the parameters on the «energy saving» panel. If the gadget is running on battery power, the screen brightness is reduced and other components are used sparingly. Changing settings for maximum performance will drain the battery faster;

• reducing the screen brightness to the minimum values will increase battery life;

• You can turn off the AirPort wireless feature to reduce power consumption.

• turning off the Bluetooth wireless connection makes it possible to increase the battery life of the gadget;

• Turning off all unnecessary devices and applications, ejecting CDs and DVDs, and turning off the keyboard backlight can reduce power consumption.

Many people are interested in how much the macbook is charging and whether it is necessary to discharge the macbook before charging? The manufacturer claims that charging can last for 17-18 hours. This will depend on the operating mode of the gadget. And there is no need to discharge it before charging, because the lithium-ion type of battery works in cycles. We spent one charge equal to 100% of the battery capacity — you can recharge it again.

Charging without charger

The battery of a modern MacBook can provide all-day battery life, but it will need regular recharging. Sometimes there is no charger at hand, and the question arises — how to charge a macbook not from the network. The new models are equipped with USB Type-C, which can be used for charging from external batteries (charge banks). Now it is easy to add the same amount to the required hours of autonomy.

The manufacturer insists on using power adapters that will match those included in the kit in terms of power. But in practice, many use sources of greater or lesser power. If you connect several power sources to the gadget at the same time, the most powerful one will be used, regardless of the sequence in which they are connected. A MacBook that has less watts of power to charge will not last long. Charging with a lot of watts will not harm the device (even 100 watts), but the consequences are questionable.

The charging bank can increase the battery life of the gadget by only 20-30%, as it has low power. Of course, one such can is unlikely to be enough for a full charge, but a few pieces will not become useless on the road or far from home. Even budget options are suitable for recharging. The best solution for today would be ZMI 10. Its power is 40-45 W, which is enough to fully charge a laptop. Thanks to the new technologies used in this bank, its charging is very fast (3-3.5 hours).

Charging without charging

If a charger is not available, the following charging methods can be used:

• connection of battery contacts and non-branded wires. The method is dangerous and can «kill» the battery, but for an electronics specialist this will be a way out of the situation;

• Using a 50 Wh portable external battery BatteryBox. This device will help charge the gadget without charging and without access to the network. The method is safe, and it will take up to 9hours.

By paying a little attention to the process of charging your MacBook, you can significantly increase the life of its battery and its battery life. You should follow the recommendations from Apple and use a proprietary charger, and the absence of it can be replaced with a specialized device. It is also important that the use of the gadget is in an extended temperature range.

Battery for Apple MacBook Pro 13″ MD212, ME662 (A1437) 6600mAh

  • Approximately 600 charge-discharge cycles until battery capacity reaches 70%
  • Service life of at least 2 years batteries
  • Has a built-in charge controller that protects against overheating and overcharging.

All batteries are safety tested and certified, ISO 9001:2008.

All recommendations and warnings apply only to batteries of the type: Li-ion, Li-polymer.

Charging

  1. How do I start using a new battery?

Lithium battery must be charged before first use! Only new Ni-Cd, Ni-MH batteries are discharged before use, while lithium batteries need to be charged!

It is recommended to make three full charge-discharge cycles for the device to determine the full capacity of the battery. Each cycle includes charging for at least 3 hours and then completely discharging the battery.

Do not leave the battery empty, charge the device immediately. These cycles are necessary for your device to use the full capacity of the new battery.

  2. How to charge the battery?

Use the charger and cable supplied with the device, regardless of the capacity of the new battery (more or less).

Fast charging does not depend on the battery, if the device supports it, it will also work after replacing the battery.

  3. Memory effect

None (does not require «training» and «calibration»), but several charge-discharge cycles are required for a new battery (after replacing the old one).

Storage

  1. Production date

The production date is indicated in the serial number. Example: C11x04xx or A11x04xx — 2019 4 months, C12x06xx or A12x06xx — 2020 6 months. From 2022, 2202Nxx is indicated, where 22 is the year, 02 is the month.

  2. Shelf life

A battery charged to 30-50% can be stored for no more than 2 years at a temperature of 0 — 25 °C. In this case, the battery loses no more than 4% capacity per year.

Service life

  1. Causes battery degradation

Extreme heat when charging or in use. For example in the sun, near heaters. This does not apply to natural heating during charging or operation.

Increased loads. They do not reduce the resource as much as other reasons, but frequent loads can significantly reduce the service life.

Cold charger. Charging the battery at temperatures below 5°C greatly reduces the resource.

Mechanical damage. Damage to the sealed packaging of the battery increases the risk of complete failure.

Storage in a discharged state. Also, long storage with the battery connected drains it faster and often the device can no longer charge it.

Incompatible charger. A charger with a lower capacity can charge more slowly and also reduces the resource.

The battery is faulty, signs

  1. Discharges quickly

Turns off abruptly, it was 50% and immediately 20% most often this is due to a battery malfunction.

  2. Won’t turn on

Diagnosis required, but battery replacement does not always solve the problem.

  3. Not charging

Finding the cause of the problem in order of verification:
    1. change the cable,
    2. change the charging adapter,
    3. clean the charging port on the device itself,
    4. change the battery.

Safety

  1. What is the danger of the battery

The absence of damage and stress in the operation of the battery practically guarantees its safety. The degree of assurance is illustrated by the following comparison from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:
    • the chance of becoming a victim of lightning during a person’s lifetime is about 1 in 13,000;
    • 1 in 10,000,000 chance of accidental ignition of a lithium-ion battery. Read more in this article.

  2. Battery swelling

Why this happens, how dangerous it is and what to do about it, read in this article.

  3. How to extinguish batteries

Learn more about preparing for extinguishing in this article.

Disposal

  1. How to store and prepare for disposal

Keep out of reach of children and animals! Before you dispose of your smartphone or cell phone battery, keep it away from children and pets. The consequences can be dire.

Remove external risks. Keep the used battery away from moisture and heat sources (do not place in bathrooms, near heaters, etc.).

Eliminate short circuit. Tape the contact area on the battery to avoid the risk of a short circuit.

Place in container . If you have several batteries, then place them in a dielectric container — a cardboard box, plastic or polyethylene container in order to avoid contact with electrically conductive materials.

For different — different containers. Avoid mixing Li-Ion, Nickel-Metal Hydride and Alkaline batteries in the same box when storing. Dispose of them separately as well to avoid a flammable chemical reaction if the housings leak or burst.

  2. Where to return

You can see the nearest point here, for batteries, select Boxy points.

Also in Moscow, upon delivery or at the point of issue, it can be handed over for recycling (please inform about this when placing an order).
