Hello, dear readers of Uspei.com. The Ryzen 5 1600, which came out back in April 2017 , still leads the in the top sellers of stores, despite the fact that its two successors have since come out.
It owes its success, first of all, to the price: since its release, its retail price has fallen by two and a half times, and taking into account the resale and Chinese online stores, even more. But the Ryzen 5 2600, released a year later, also fell significantly in price, rapidly catching up with the previous model in price.
The six-core Ryzen 5 3600 , which went on sale this summer, is also in great demand and deservedly so: its performance is excellent. Another question with the price: is it necessary to overpay almost twice for a fresh processor, when every penny counts? I hope this review will help to understand this issue.
Ryzen 5 1600 will be played by its X version: the usual one was not on hand, and the X one usually has more overclocking potential. And we will use this potential: in our case, the processor worked stably at a frequency of at 4050 MHz at 1.4 volts .
Let’s see if overclocking can close the gap with the newer chip. The Ryzen 5 2600 was also overclocked to 4150 MHz at 1.35 volts. Judging by the statistics of Silicon Lottery , the results are not bad, and quite achievable on systems with medium tower coolers.
The Ryzen 5 3600 was unable to run consistently at 4200 MHz across all cores, even at over 1.4 volts. And since the factory boost raises the frequency of one core to 4.2 GHz in a single-threaded load, I decided not to overclock this processor at all: the game is not worth the candle.
Since the AMD X570 chipset is not friendly with 14nm Ryzen, two motherboards will be used in the test: Gigabyte B450 Aorus Elite for Ryzen 5 1600 and ASUS ROG Strix X570-F Gaming for 2600
RAM will also be a real test for all participants: these are two dual-rank G. SKILL Trident Z modules on Samsung chips B-Die with a total capacity of 32 GB and an XMP profile with an effective frequency of 4000 MHz.
The QVL lists include only 2 boards based on Intel’s Z370 chipset, a couple of top motherboards from ASUS and a dozen motherboards from MSI based on the Z390. In other words, the memory can go up to 4 GHz, but only a few systems can do it.
And what frequency do these “heavyweights” take on our processors and motherboards? Everything turned out worse than I thought. No, with the Ryzen 3000 series, everything is more or less: the bars take a frequency up to 3866 MHz, but we had to stop at a frequency of 3600, since this was the limit for synchronous operation with the Infinity Fabric bus.
But after all the possible manipulations with voltages, the two previous processors were hardly able to make friends even at a modest frequency of 3200 MHz, and instability was very difficult to detect by stress tests. The timings, however, were quite good on all systems.
So even without testing I can immediately say that if you need 32 gigabytes of fast RAM with two or four sticks — save yourself the trouble and take Ryzen 3000 . The remaining components of the test stand are on your screen.

Synthetic tests
Let’s start with synthetics and tests in working applications. In the Cinebench R20 test, the gap between the first and second generation of Ryzen is 20%, and this is considering that the 1600X is overclocked and the 3600 is stock.
Ryzen 5 3600 renders with Blender without overclocking faster than the overclocked six-core first generation by about 20%. The 5% difference between the 1600X and the 2600 isn’t impressive considering the 2600 is already overclocked 100MHz higher than its predecessor.
In the Corona benchmark, young people outperform old people by about 7%. A similar difference is observed in the V-Ray benchmark. In GeekBench 5, the gap between the first and second generation of Zen is increasing, but you can’t call it huge.
In Handbrake video encoding, Ryzen 5 3600 can reduce the time of by 10-15% of depending on the codec used.
In the 3D Mark Time Spy benchmark processor test, about the same 15% increase between the first and third series of six-core processors, between 1600 and 2600 in general meager 3% .
In the data encryption speed, the difference should generally be sought with a magnifying glass : 9% increase is unlikely to overpay almost 2 times.
There are no surprises in PCMark 10 and WebXPRT 3, and even in 7-Zip the difference is still the same despite the faster memory of the Ryzen 5 3600.

Game tests
Let’s move on to games. Ultra settings, 1080p. In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey , there is little difference between the processors in terms of average FPS on 2080 Ti, but the results of the minimum measurements put everything in its place. A more obvious difference in smoothness can be seen in the frame time graphs.
The Division 2 , apparently, is not so voracious to the processor, and the results were appropriate. There are no complaints about the smoothness of the picture to any participant in the test.
Things are quite different with NFS Heat and Frostbite 3 engine : the difference is visible to the naked eye. However, none of the processors prevent the graphics card from delivering more than 60 frames per second.
In the latest installment of Lara Croft’s adventure, the Ryzen 5 3600’s lead continues throughout the test run. The gap is not devastating, but clearly visible.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is famous for its gluttony to the resources of video cards, but it was interesting to know what kind of appetite it has for processors. As it turned out — the minimum, and the difference between them at the level of error.
Call Of Duty Modern Warfare has increased FPS after regular updates and now loads video cards to the fullest. Only the Ryzen 5 3600 can boast of smoothness: with a minimum FPS and frame time, it is noticeably better.

Same games on MSI’s Radeon RX 5700 XT
So I decided to test the same games on MSI ‘s Radeon RX 5700 XT . It costs 3 times cheaper and, perhaps, the owners of these processors will aim at a card of this level. We will find out if they are enough for her or not.
In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey , the difference between the processors has been preserved, even though we are dealing with a much weaker card.
The Division 2 ran into the performance of the card and the difference in this game is not visible both by eye and by the charts. NFS Heat is still gluttonous: the difference is preserved, and the frame time is still noticeably better at 3600. 0458 is still processor dependent. FPS numbers are still good, but the trend continues.
Red Dead Redemption 2 still does not show interest in processors: give it powerful video cards. Interestingly, GTA 5 behaved and behaves very differently than .
At first glance, it may seem that in Call Of Duty Modern Warfare there is almost no difference between the processors, but 1600X is weaker in terms of smoothness. Although for many this will not be a problem.

It will be based on a 6-core 12-thread AMD Ryzen 5 2600 processor, which is quite enough for a comfortable solution of professional tasks and games, including streaming. Also, do not forget about the potential and survivability of the CPU from AMD. And all this for a fairly sane $207.
Recall that it operates at a frequency of 3.4 — 3.9 GHz, has 16 MB of L3 cache and a 65-watt thermal package. The built-in memory controller is guaranteed to support DDR4-2933 modules.
If we need to save money, we take AMD Ryzen 5 1600 and overclock it, getting similar performance. If you don’t want to mess with the system settings, but want to get even more features, we pay extra for the AMD Ryzen 2600X.
To cool down the heat of the processor, we chose the efficient cooling system Aardwolf Performa 10X with a price tag of $33. Judging by the shape of the radiator, we have an exact copy of the bestseller ZALMAN CNPS10X Performa +, but with a slower turntable and an improved base. The result is a tower cooler with five heat pipes 151 mm high. Its copper sole is solid but without nickel plating.
