Gaming Considerations

While a good GPU is critical for gaming performance, your CPU will also have a significant impact. If the CPU is too slow, it can be a bottleneck for your GPU, which can reduce your framerate or cause stuttering. The most important CPU capabilities for gaming are single-core max boost frequency and the number of cores. A high base frequency is also critical for inadequately cooled CPUs.

Depending on the game, the CPU will often handle tasks including scene management, gameplay logic, physics calculations, and asset loading.

Having multiple CPU cores can improve performance with games that utilize them. However, developers cannot split up every task to take advantage of a growing number of cores. Most modern games don’t benefit from having more than 6–8 cores. Game performance will experience diminishing returns as you add more CPU cores.

General App Considerations

If you’re only planning to stream shows, use office apps, or browse the internet, you won’t need a top-end CPU to get good performance. The most important CPU capability for general app usage is the single-core max boost frequency. A high base frequency is also helpful for inadequately cooled CPUs.

Browsers depend on your CPU to quickly load pages and video content and manage multiple browser tabs. Higher single-core boost frequencies can speed up page load times.

Office and web applications are typically single-threaded, so running a single application won’t take advantage of a many-core CPU.

The more cores a CPU has, the more applications you can run simultaneously without noticing a performance impact.

Office and web applications rarely max out the CPU for long periods. These applications can use boost speeds when a burst of processing power is needed, returning to the more efficient base frequencies afterward.

Professional Tool Considerations

Video editors, 2D and 3D graphics tools, software compilers, and engineering tools require high-performing CPUs.

Professional tools are often well optimized to use many cores. CPU cores allow tools to parallelize processing tasks. Increasing the number of cores can divide the time required to process a task if the tool has good multi-threading support.

To maximize performance with professional tools, you’ll want to use a CPU with a high boost frequency and many CPU cores. Good heat dissipation is needed to maintain boost frequencies for extended periods.

While graphics applications use your GPU for some rendering tasks, most calculations and data operations are still dependent on your CPU.

Considerations When Choosing a CPU

Core Count

AMD’s Ryzen 7 3700X CPUs have 8 cores.

AMD’s Ryzen 5 1600X CPUs have 6 cores.

Increased core counts can improve the performance of games and professional tools that use them. Most modern games don’t benefit from having more than 6–8 cores. Even general apps can benefit from many cores when numerous applications are open simultaneously. Web browsers don’t significantly take advantage of multiple cores when loading a single page. However, more CPU cores can improve performance when running demanding web apps in multiple windows.

CPU Clock Speeds

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X has a 3.6 GHz base frequency and supports a 4.4 GHz single-core max boost frequency.

The AMD Ryzen 5 1600X has a 3.6 GHz base frequency and supports a 4.0 GHz single-core max boost frequency.

Single-core performance is essential for some games, as many don’t take full advantage of multiple cores. Professional tools depend on high single and multi-core boost frequencies to maximize their processing speed.

Boost frequencies are only achieved under ideal circumstances. The safest strategy for consistent gaming performance with a basic cooler is to get a processor with a higher base clock speed. However, with adequate cooling, you may be able to maintain speeds near the max boost frequency.

Check out my article, Choosing the Best CPU Cooler for AMD’s Ryzen 7 3700X, for recommended coolers that can maintain these boost frequencies on the 3700X.

Check out my article, Choosing the Best CPU Cooler for AMD’s Ryzen 5 1600X, for recommended coolers that can maintain these boost frequencies on the 1600X.

DDR Support

The 3700X CPU’s fastest supported DDR memory type is DDR4, with a max stock speed of 3200 MHz.

The 1600X CPU’s fastest supported DDR memory type is DDR4, with a max stock speed of 2667 MHz.

You can exceed these stock speeds officially supported by CPUs when overclocking memory, such as with an XMP profile. Motherboard specifications will indicate their supported overclocked-memory speeds. To be able to overclock DDR memory, your motherboard chipset needs to support memory overclocking.

Faster PC memory can improve game and professional tool performance by reducing the time it takes to perform calculations and data operations.

Using the quickest RAM may not have as much of an impact as upgrading your CPU and graphics card or adding more RAM.

Learn about our recommended RAM for the 3700X in Choosing the Best RAM for AMD’s Ryzen 7 3700X CPU.

Learn about our recommended RAM for the 1600X in Choosing the Best RAM for AMD’s Ryzen 5 1600X CPU.

Cache Size

The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X has an L3 cache capacity of 32 MB.

The AMD Ryzen 5 1600X has an L3 cache capacity of 16 MB.

A CPU’s cache is a small amount of memory, close to the CPU cores, containing recently used data. An L3 cache capacity of at least 20 MB is ideal for games and professional tool performance.

Games and professional tool performance can improve as cache size increases, as it can reduce delays when retrieving commonly used assets from memory. While nearly any task will use a CPU’s cache, a large cache becomes less impactful for general PC usage, such as browsing webpages.

Remember that cache sizes often increase with core counts, so if you want to increase your L3 cache, you may need to get a CPU with more cores.

Overclocking

The 3700X supports overclocking.

The 1600X supports overclocking.

Overclocking is mainly relevant for PC gamers who want to maximize their game framerates. CPU overclocking increases frequencies past their default limits. Excellent heat dissipation via fans or another solution is required to maintain system stability while overclocking.

Professional tools can benefit from overclocked frequencies. However, overclocking may introduce some possibility of system instability, which may be less acceptable in business scenarios.

    9000 RYZEN 5 1600X

9000 applications, according to our tests.

The performance of 4 cores, if any, and performance per core has the greatest impact on the result, since most games do not fully use more than 4 cores.

The speed of caches and working with RAM is also important.

    Speed in office use

    Ryzen 5 1600X

    66.4

The performance of 1 core has the greatest impact on the result, since most of these applications use only one, ignoring the rest.

Similarly, many professional applications such as various CADs ignore multi-threaded performance.

    Speed in heavy applications

The performance of all cores and their number have the greatest impact on the result, since most of these applications willingly use all the cores and increase the speed accordingly.

At the same time, certain periods of work can be demanding on the performance of one or two cores, for example, applying filters in the editor.

Different tasks require different CPU strengths. A system with few fast cores and low memory latency will be fine for the vast majority of games, but will be inferior to a system with a lot of slow cores in a rendering scenario.

We believe that a minimum of 4/4 (4 physical cores and 4 threads) processor is suitable for a budget gaming PC. At the same time, some games can load it at 100%, slow down and freeze, and performing any tasks in the background will lead to a drop in FPS.

Ideally, the budget shopper should aim for a minimum of 4/8 and 6/6. A gamer with a big budget can choose between 6/12, 8/8 and 8/16. Processors with 10 and 12 cores can perform well in games with high frequency and fast memory, but are overkill for such tasks. Also, buying for the future is a dubious undertaking, since in a few years many slow cores may not provide sufficient gaming performance.

When choosing a processor for your work, consider how many cores your programs use. For example, photo and video editors can use 1-2 cores when working with filtering, and rendering or converting in the same editors already uses all threads.

Data obtained from tests by users who tested their systems both with overclocking (maximum value in the table) and without (minimum). A typical result is shown in the middle, the more filled in the color bar, the better the average result among all tested systems.

    Benchmarks

Benchmarks were run on stock hardware, that is, without overclocking and with factory settings. Therefore, on overclocked systems, the points can noticeably differ upwards. Also, small performance changes may be due to the BIOS version.

You may be surprised by the selection of games. Tested what is installed on the computer. I think this is a plus: you have probably already seen 100500 tests of Tomb Raider, why one more? And the Battlefield 5 test turned out to be unique in a sense.

    recommendations

In all games, the frame rate is limited by the performance of the processor, not the graphics card. In the case of the 5800x, this required lowering the resolution from the standard 1920×1080. Also, the video card creates an additional load on the processor, this line of RTX30 differs for the worse from the RTX20 and AMD products.

SMT and 2 cores were disabled in UEFI. 5800x with two cores disabled is the equivalent of a slightly overclocked 5600x, because the standard frequencies of the latter are lower.

Boxed 5800x was bought in the Rachik store, which has a website only on Avito. In our age of the dominance of large retail chains, such small shops «from the past» can also be useful. 20 years ago, I bought all the components at similar points on Savel and Mitka, only the «prices» were on paper, and not in «your web sites». ?

    Where is the acceleration?

I tested the processors primarily for myself, so I used everyday settings in the tests, selected to work in the following conditions: there are few heavy applications (rendering, etc.), the game processor bends the most, most of the time the computer spends in » office mode» (writing code).

No overclocking for this reason. As they say, everything has already been overclocked to us, by AMD. I tried to make auto-overclocking more aggressive with the 3700x (twisted precision boost overdrive), and even fixed the frequency, but in the end I got a ridiculous increase in performance and a decent increase in power consumption.

For the 3700x, I reduced the vcore voltage by 0.08V by setting a negative vcore offset. In games, the frame rate has decreased by 1% (probably due to the clock stretcher), and power consumption has already decreased by 8%. I think it’s a good exchange.

In the case of 5800x, a small decrease in vcore offset did almost nothing in games, and a large decrease reduced performance too much. Therefore, I gave up on vcore offset, instead reducing the voltage in the Curve optimization setting (-30 -30 -30 -30 -30 -25 -10 -13), which allows you to adjust the voltage separately for each core. But … instead of reduced consumption, I received an increased frequency. It’s not what I need, but it’s better than nothing at all. By the way, after changing Curve optimization, the processor may not work optimally.

Thus, after «auto overclocking optimization», the frame rate of the 3700x decreased by 1%, while that of the 5800x increased by 1%. If you think this comparison is unfair, then just subtract 1% from the 5800x results, which corresponds to the combined Curve optimization + vcore offset setting. But I have not yet tested such a vinaigrette in my work. ?

    About tables

3 to 8 runs were performed for each configuration. The result of each run is the frame rate measured by RTSS and MSI Afterburner graphics. What do the numbers in the tables mean:

    AMD Ryzen 5 1600X AMD FX-8350
    95 W Max TDP 125W
NA Power consumption per day (kWh) NA
NA Operating cost per day NA
NA Power consumption per year (kWh) NA
NA Operating cost per year NA
    c/s Δ %
Arithmetic mean of the results of the runs. The units of measure are the number of frames per second. Absolute measurement uncertainty, calculated as the difference between the smallest and largest run results. The units of measure are the number of frames per second. Results with large margins of error should be treated with devilish caution. ☠️ Comparison with another result. The units of measurement are percentages. What is compared with:
    3700x 8 3700X 8+SMT
    5800X 8+SMT 3700X 8+SMT
    5800X 8 3700X 5800X 6+SMT ⇒ 925+SMT 9255+SMT 9255+ 3700x 8

The CPU usage chart in MSI Afterburner is designed in its own way. If SMT is enabled, then the value is multiplied by 2. This is done for two reasons. Firstly, this allows you to more clearly show the work of SMT cores, values greater than 100% usually mean that all full-fledged cores are loaded. Secondly, when SMT is disabled, the interpretation of the values is preserved: 100% still means loading all full-fledged cores, and values greater than 100% are impossible. Try it, you will like it. ?

    Borderlands 2

The game was released back in 2012, so it loads only 2.5 cores, but it does it «high quality». The settings in the game are maximum, PhysX is transferred to the processor, the resolution is 1920×1080.

I did not write a script that guides the player through the game level during testing. Instead, a point on the map was found where the frame rate drops the most. During the test, the player stands motionless at this point for three minutes. This is certainly not a measurement of the minimum frame rate during a normal playthrough of the game, but close to it.

Note the «saw» in the Framerate graph for the «5800x 8+SMT» configuration. At first I thought — something is wrong with the power supply of Windows, maybe there are «tails» from the 3700x. The tails were indeed found, but after putting the schemes in order, the problem remained. After a short series of brutal experiments, it turned out that the game did not like SMT cores. This is strange, because in the case of the 3700x the game digested them, albeit with difficulty, but here it just threw up, although the processors differ by and large only in performance.

For 5800x, along with disabling SMT cores, 4 full cores were disabled with the command start /affinity 505 borderlands2.exe . As I wrote above, the game is low-threaded, so the frame rate even increased by a symbolic 1 fps (perhaps because Windows throws less threads across different cores). But most importantly, this allowed us to slightly reduce the temperature of the processor, for two reasons.

First, the processor often has «failed» cores, which are supplied with a higher voltage, and therefore they heat up more than others. The «success» of the nuclei is determined at the factory. In addition, as I wrote above, the voltage applied to the cores can be changed using the Curve optimization setting. The two most unsuccessful cores — 6 and 7 — I did not give to the game.

Secondly, look at the conditional scheme of the physical arrangement of the cores: Running core 0 heats neighboring 2, and core 3 heats 1 and 5. I gave the game cores 0, 1, 4, 5, and thus avoided their mutual heating.

    Dying Light

Also not the most recent game, but nevertheless it is able to scatter its work across 16 streams. The settings in the game are max. Starting the tests, I did not expect that the difference between the processors would be so big, so I ran the 3700x at the standard resolution of 1920×1080, and for 5800x it had to be reduced to 1600×900.

Test method similar to Borderlands 2.

    Minecraft

There are two versions of the game: Java edition and Bedrock edition (Minecraft for Windows 10). The first of them is technically poor and keeps afloat thanks to old merits and a large number of mods. The second one works more competently with modern hardware, loading almost all processor threads if necessary, and loading the video card extremely weakly (for it, we had to force high performance in the drivers to avoid a strong decrease in frequency).

The first test was carried out in the same way as in the previous two games. The settings are as follows: angle of view 80 (higher than normal), simulation distance 12 (maximum), draw distance 80 (maximum). The player is transferred to the desired point on the map with the command /tp 0 250 0 facing 0 248 1 . The second test is done while flying in creative mode at normal speed (no SHIFT key) for a distance of 1500 blocks. The draw distance has been reduced to 48 (normal value) so that during the flight the game has time to load the blocks that fall into the field of view.

I also wanted to stir up the third test with measuring the initial loading time of the card (chunks), but it turned out that it does not depend on the processor performance. But it depends on the number of cores: disabling SMT increases the loading time by 2-3 times! You can see for yourself by comparing the graphs in the first table. It looks like a game jamb (tested version 1.17.11).

    Battlefield 5

Finally, the icing on the cake is online play. I wanted to do quality testing. To do this, you need to heavily load the processor — no less than during a real game — and ensure good accuracy of the results. For a good processor load, it is desirable that a large number of players (about 60) come into view along with special effects such as smoke and artillery strike. Well, that is, you need to climb into the very meat and hold out there for at least three minutes without dying. And so several times. I quickly realized that this was impossible.

Therefore, testing was carried out as an observer in the Breakthrough mode on the third sector of the Marita map. Camera #4 covers all three flags, so almost all 64 players are on screen. The stillness of the camera and the duration of the test from 3 to 10 minutes should ensure acceptable accuracy of the results. I had to spend a lot of time, because the attackers do not always reach the third sector and stay there for a long time.

    Game settings

The settings are almost the same as what I use during normal play. The frame limit has been raised from 200 to 300 just in case. To maximize the load on the processor, the Future frame rendering setting is enabled. Look in the table below for a graph of GPU usage for the «5800x 8» configuration. See the little «shelves»? This is focused on the video card, because with the given settings, the game is more than 95%, it cannot load. Decreasing the resolution from 1600×900 to 1280×720 had a surprisingly small effect on the graphics card load, so reducing further does not make sense.

Despite all efforts, the error in measuring the minimum frame rate is large. Particularly egregious cases are circled in red. Even the middle frequency has a problematic result, where the error is twice the difference between the two configurations, that is, the frame rate of «5800x 8» in some rounds dropped to the level of «5800x 8+SMT».

Compared to a regular game, the average frame rate in the tests is much lower, and the minimum frame rate is comparable. I advise starting from the average frequency, the minimum one depends too much on random factors: for example, a rocket can fly in one round, but not in another.

In addition, an orange «peak» is visible in the lower left corner of the screenshot — an anomalously high frame time. This is a feature of the spectator mode, during a normal game such frames are less common and their time is lower. Peaks affect the result of 0.1%, I even doubted whether to include it in the table.

    NVIDIA video driver processor dependency

After running all the tests on the 3700x processor, I was surprised to find that the old video drivers were installed. It turned out that after installing 472.12, vile Windows two minutes later downloaded and installed (you can say «gave birth») the released 9months ago 457.51. But for the article, this is a plus, because it became possible to compare the processor dependence of these two drivers. I have two news for you: good and bad. Good — in the new drivers, the frame rate has not decreased, bad — but it has not increased either! ?

    Conclusions

    Performance:

    • 5800x is 26..35% faster than 3700x. +20% IPC and +500 MHz frequencies did their job. But, to be honest, I did not expect such a defeat. ?
    • 5800x did not master Minecraft at maximum speeds. AMD still has a lot of work to do. ?
    • 5600x is faster than 3700x by 22..31%. Great choice for games. ?
    • 5600x is 2. .8% slower than 5800x. While 8 cores in a gaming PC is more of a luxury than a necessity? ?
    • Disabling SMT in multi-threaded games can reduce the frame rate by 10..15% (Dying Light, Minecraft), or even 2-3 times (map loading in Minecraft). In games that need full-fledged cores, on the contrary, a small increase is possible (8 cores in Battlefield 5). In older games, disabling SMT may fix performance issues (Borderlands 2). ?

But with power consumption, everything is not so rosy, it increased by 37..65%, and reaches 90 watts in Battlefield 5. The temperature in Minecraft reaches 69 °, it will still grow in summer, but still remain within normal limits, water does not will be needed. The fan speed in the cooler has increased from 1700 rpm to a maximum of 2000 rpm. This didn’t make much of a difference in noise due to the quiet fan, but many inexpensive coolers have fans that are quite noisy at maximum speeds, so the choice of cooling for the 5800x should be approached responsibly, even if the processor is taken only for games.
