Click to order was the first. Last year, our colleagues managed to visit two large offices in Nizhny Novgorod and Novosibirsk. This time we had a unique opportunity to visit, perhaps, one of the most unusual branches of the company — the Sarov Software Development Center in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

This was not the first trip to the Intel Software Development Center for the editors of our magazine. Last year, our colleagues managed to visit two large offices in Nizhny Novgorod and Novosibirsk. This time we had a unique opportunity to visit, perhaps, one of the most unusual branches of the company — the Sarov Software Development Center in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

Since the program of our stay was very busy, therefore, immediately upon arrival, the entire group of journalists was taken under her wing by Daria Kiryanova, who manages the Intel branch in the Sarov Technopark.

In order to expand our knowledge, she made a short digression into the history of the development of the center. Initially, the first office arose in 2003 in the city of Sarov, formerly known as Arzamas-16 — a city of scientists and secret developments, a place where such famous scientists as Khariton, Zel’dovich, Kurchatov worked on the creation of nuclear weapons.

In 1947, not yet a city, but the village of Sarov was separated from the Mordovian Republic, excluding it from all accounting documents, including geographical maps.

Sarov has been keeping the status of a closed city for more than half a century. For this reason, Intel had great difficulties in working with foreign colleagues. In this regard, it was decided to open a technopark outside the city. The choice fell on the village of Satis, 7 kilometers from Sarov. Construction proceeded at a rapid pace. As Daria noted, the territory of the former agricultural farm, on which Intel’s «estate» is now located, was changing literally before our eyes. And in 2007, the grand opening of the new office took place. The desire of the employees to quickly find a full-fledged office was so great that they themselves got involved in the work on arranging the building and, despite the holidays, diligently brought the opening day closer: for example, March 8 was marked by hard work.

Today, the office, or as employees call it, site (from English — place, region, site), has a total area of ​​3740 square meters. m, which employs more than 100 people. For convenience, the working area is divided into so-called cubes — small cells separated by light partitions. Each such cube is standardly equipped with a telephone and a network. The main advantage of such a structure is to ensure the confidentiality of the employee with minimal space. Work is work, and sometimes you want to relax. To do this, the office provides a dining room where you can have a hearty and tasty lunch.

Fans of outdoor activities have the opportunity to play ping-pong or warm up on the simulators. Those who prefer a quiet pastime can immerse themselves in reading books or magazines that are available on the library rack. As we were later explained, there is no clearly regulated work schedule for employees. The main thing is that the assigned tasks are completed on time.

What are the main directions of Intel’s Sarov laboratory?

• Development of libraries for optimal use of Intel processors in media and scientific applications
• Creating tools that make it easier to work with multithreaded and distributed systems
• Compilers that speed up software
• Physical modeling of electrical processes and circuits

In addition to carrying out its main activities, Intel is actively involved in the life of Sarov, conducting extensive programs aimed at educating schoolchildren (summer and winter schools for parallel programming), participating in Kharitonov readings, various trainings, as well as volunteer programs organized for children from poor or disadvantaged families. The city systematically conducts classes on teaching how to work with a computer for children who do not have such an opportunity at home.

Having settled down in such a unique place as the science city of Sarov, Intel got a great chance, as they say, to participate in the education of future highly qualified personnel. As we noted above, the company actively participates in the educational system of its potential employees, and we were able to see this with our own eyes — one of the events planned by the program was a meeting with senior students from SarFTI NRNU MEPhI (Sarov State Institute of Physics and Technology), who introduced us to projects conducted in the educational and research laboratory of applied and system programming Intel BiPro. Some guys, continuing their studies at the institute, are already employees of Intel.

While the younger generation is just joining the team, the aksakals confidently support Intel’s status as one of the trendsetters in the software market. After all, making a hardware platform is not enough, you need to adapt it to the existing environment, make it as efficient and comfortable as possible. In addition, the computer should be a convenient tool not only for the user, but also for the programmer-developer. That’s exactly what the Software and Services Group is doing, kindly sharing their accomplishments with us.

Vladimir Dudnik, head of one of the directions, told us about Intel Integrated Performance Primitives , a kind of «bricks» for building software packages.

Without going into technical details that are understandable only to programmers, let’s say that IPP users are Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, Pixar, Oracle, Google and other equally reputable development companies. Another product aimed at software professionals is the Intel Math Kernel Library , a library of mathematical functions. The head of the group responsible for its development, Sergey Sivolgin, acquainted us with the goals and objectives of this area.

, engaged in the development of Intel Math Kernel Library in our country, appeared 7 years later In Nizhniy Novgorod. Then in 2003 a group was organized in Sarov. During his speech, Sergey repeatedly emphasized that this product is science-intensive, and includes not only development, but also research in this area, which implies regular exchange of experience, participation in international symposiums, cooperation with leading higher educational institutions, both in Russia and and beyond.

Those who try to keep abreast of modern programming trends know that we live in an era of parallelism. Clustering has always been relevant, but distributed computing was available only to those who had the necessary computing power, namely a large fleet of computers. However, in the middle of 9In the 0s, the emergence of MMX technology made it possible to simultaneously perform the same type of operations on several elements within the same physical processor. Evolution became a logical continuation — SSE instructions, numbering already the third technological generation. Further development of computing systems towards multi-threading and multi-core only confirmed the correctness of the concept of parallelization. Thus, today the programmer has access not only to the power of parallel computing within a single PC, but also the possibility of combining such systems into clusters and management, as well as automating this process through the Intel Cluster Toolkit.

And if the previous speakers can safely be called mathematicians and programmers, then Boris and his colleagues are closer to being considered physicists.

After all, the design of microcircuits includes not only the creation of algorithms for their operation, but also the calculation of the physical possibilities for implementing the tasks set based on the properties of the materials used.

As you can see on the slide below, the modeling process is not only related to the semiconductor industry, but also includes elements of such an important discipline as the strength of materials, including the calculation of the resistance of structures to dynamic loads.

Concluding our brief excursion into the activities of the Intel Software and Services Group , we can safely say that here we see a good example of the integration of business and science. It is generally accepted that the modern (read — capitalist) approach to research is only applied in nature, in other words — «quickly invented — quickly received.» In the case of Intel, everything looks different, because there is no and cannot be a pursuit of immediate results. Of course, the purpose of the employees’ activities is primarily the interests of the company, but the “side” (in this case, I really want to put this word in quotation marks) products of their work have a positive effect not only on the development of fundamental science, but also on the training of future scientists and engineers.
