EVGA GTX 780 Ti Classified K|ngp|n Edition Video Card Review

Published: Monday, January 27, 2014

It used to be that when buying a video card you only needed to concern yourself with price and performance.  The brand of card or GPU mfg were always a deciding factor but in the mainstream world you buy what you can afford or what you need and use it for as long as you can.  These things are different for the hardware enthusiast and we have to consider the variables.  «Does this product provide good cooling?»  «Will it draw too much power for my PSU?»  «Will it overclock?»  «Will xyz waterblock fit?»  «Does the color match the rest of my build?» and our favorite, «Is this product is the best? I always buy the best because only the best will do.»

In this review we will be taking an in-depth look at the latest video card from EVGA the GTX 780 Ti Classified K|NGP|N Edition.  On the surface this card may look like nothing more than a special edition of the GTX 780 Ti Classified with a higher clockspeed and special edition cooler.   Looking under the hood we can see that this card is much more and, in a way, much less.

The ultimate GeForce GTX 780 Ti has arrived. Introducing the EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Classified K|NGP|N Edition. This card is the final answer in the search for the greatest overclocking graphics card on the planet.

This card does not hold back, with up to 450W of dedicated GPU power, enhanced PLL circuitry, improved GPU power plane, 10CM fans, included backplate, preinstalled dedicated PWM baseplate, voltage regulation enhancements and more. As you can see, there is a reason why this card is named after the world’s Top Overclocker.

Extreme overclockers Vince “K|NGP|N” Lucido and Illya “TiN” Tsemenko demand the best when it comes to performance and overclocking, so they set out to co-design this product along with EVGA, and geared it for the ultimate overclocker.

“In order to break world records these days you need some serious hardware,” said Vince “K|NGP|N” Lucido. “This card was engineered to serve one purpose… be the world’s best overclocking graphics card. Expect GPU clockspeeds at over 1.85GHz with extreme cooling.”

“With the EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Classified K|NGP|N Edition graphics card, we focused on the basic demands that are needed when doing extreme overclocking,” said Illya “TiN” Tsemenko. «Capable hardware design and heavy power delivery capacity is key for performance dominance and the ultimate gaming experience. So too is a unique power convertor able to provide over 450W of clean voltage for every kind of overclocking!»

The release of the new family of AMD Volcanic Islands video cards created such a stir in the graphics adapter market that even the price cuts for «top» solutions from NVIDIA against this background somehow passed unnoticed. To change the situation in their favor, the «greens» had no choice but to release a model that would outshine the flagship from the competitor’s camp — AMD Radeon R9290X.

Although, by and large, NVIDIA already has such a video card — NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN. Today it is the fastest single-chip graphics adapter. However, it is not only out of reach of other solutions in terms of performance, but also out of reach for most users in terms of cost. Even the most avid gamers will think ten times before paying $1,000 for a graphics card. Indeed, for such an amount you can buy a whole system, and a fairly decent level.

So NVIDIA needed a graphics card that could outdo the AMD Radeon R9 290X while being more affordable than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN. This model was NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti , which automatically led the family of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 7xx graphics adapters.

In our opinion, this video card has been ready for release for a long time and was a kind of trump card in the game on the graphics adapter market. The manufacturer simply waited for the necessary pause and activated it at the right moment. The essence of this allegory becomes clear if you look at the microarchitecture of the novelty.

Microarchitecture Features

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is based on the well-known NVIDIA GK110 graphics chip using the NVIDIA Kepler microarchitecture. However, to say that the company took the video core from NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN and simply relabeled it, of course, is impossible. Since the new chip includes 15 SMX clusters out of 15 possible, while on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN their number is 12 and 14, respectively. Given that each SMX cluster includes 192 CUDA cores, we get that the total number of universal shader processors in the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is 2880. And this is more than the AMD Radeon R9 290X (2816 stream processors) and even the expensive NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN (2688 stream processors).

In addition, the use of the maximum number of SMX clusters made it possible to increase the number of texture units. Now their total number for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is 240, while NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN has 224, and AMD Radeon R9290X — and 176 at all. This means that the texture filtering of the new product will be about 20% faster than that of the flagship from the camp of competitors.

Looking at these figures, one involuntarily asks the question: “Why then keep the NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN model on the market at all, which has a smaller number of structural blocks in the GPU and lower performance, but at the same time costs much more?” Probably, NVIDIA was also puzzled by this problem, and found a very simple way out of it. The developers simply reduced the speed of double precision calculations on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti by blocking the corresponding CUDA cores (FP64). Thus, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti and NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN were separated into different market segments. The first one is focused more on games, and the second one — on professional applications, where the speed of double precision calculations is more in demand.

In addition, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti comes with only 3GB of GDDR5 memory, while the NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN comes with 6GB of GDDR5 memory.

And since we have touched on the memory subsystem, it is appropriate to recall the direct competitor of the new product — AMD Radeon R9 290X. The fact is that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti contains six 64-bit memory channels, while the AMD Radeon R9 290X has eight. Thus, the total «width» of the memory bus in the first case is 384 bits, and in the second — 512 bits. At first it may seem that this is it — the bottleneck of the novelty. But the developers foresaw this moment too, increasing the memory frequency to 7 GHz (for AMD Radeon R9290X this figure equals 5 GHz). In other words, despite the 384-bit bus, the total video memory bandwidth of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is even slightly higher than that of its competitor (336 versus 320 GB/s).

However, the novelty still has its own Achilles’ heel — the number of raster operations blocks (ROP). Their number in NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is limited to 48, while AMD Radeon R9 290X has 64 such pipelines. That is, in multi-monitor configurations and at high display resolutions, the flagship from the «red» camp should have an advantage.

Of course, these are just «dry» numbers, but one can draw an unambiguous conclusion from them — from a technological point of view, the NVIDIA GK110 chip of the latest revision (GK110-425-B1) is more advanced than AMD Hawaii XT used in AMD Radeon R9 290X.

Even in such important parameters as power consumption and heating, it is ahead of its competitor.

And now let’s see what all this translates into in practice.

These slides are taken from NVIDIA’s official press release, but even so, the advantage of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti over AMD Radeon R9 290X looks pretty convincing. True, it is worth noting here that the test charts are submitted for a resolution of 2560 x 1440. In multi-monitor configurations, the gap may be much smaller or even absent. Since this mode will affect a smaller number of raster operations units and less video memory than AMD Radeon R9290X.

Utilities

NVIDIA GeForce Experience application with ShadowPlay support

We have already written about the NVIDIA GeForce Experience (GFE) shell more than once, but each announcement of a new product from NVIDIA gives one more reason to remember about it, especially that the company is constantly introducing new features. For those who do not know, NVIDIA GeForce Experience is a utility whose main task is to timely update drivers for NVIDIA GeForce video cards and optimize game settings for the user’s system, based on the system requirements of a particular game and PC configuration.

Just select one of the games installed on your computer from the list and click on the «Optimize» button — the program will do the rest for you. Moreover, the most accurate balance between performance and image quality will be found. Quite convenient, especially when you consider that in modern games there are sometimes so many different settings that you don’t always even understand what they are responsible for and what values \u200b\u200bmust be set.

NVIDIA GeForce Experience is able to find and set the optimal settings for more than a hundred games and for all modern video cards from NVIDIA, including the model considered in this review.

But the most interesting feature was a video capture tool called «NVIDIA ShadowPlay». This feature allows you to record video of the gameplay in real time, and in a resolution of 1920 x 1080 at 60 frames per second. For recording, the NVENC hardware H.264 encoder built into all NVIDIA GeForce GTX 6xx and 7xx series graphics adapters is used. In this way, a minimum loss of performance is achieved during the gameplay.

Below are footage from Batman: Arkham Origins and Call of Duty: Ghosts captured using the NVIDIA ShadowPlay feature. In both cases, the resolution was set to 1920 x 1080 and the graphics settings were medium and maximum.

Batman: Arkham Origins game

Call of Duty: Ghosts game

After enabling NVIDIA ShadowPlay video recording, average FPS (frames per second) at maximum game settings Batman: Arkham Origins dropped from 112 to 106, and in Call of Duty: Ghosts — from 125 to 118. That is, when using this feature, the performance decreases by only 5-6%, which, in our opinion, is insignificant.

NVIDIA ShadowPlay technology has already received a lot of positive feedback, so NVIDIA plans to continue its active development. In particular, in future versions of NVIDIA GeForce Experience, it will be possible to integrate with the Twitch.tv online service, which will allow owners of modern cards from NVIDIA to send video directly there. This feature has already been implemented for the YouTube service.

Utility from EVGA

To optimize settings on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti, the company recommends using the utility from EVGA. In terms of its functionality, it is fully consistent with the popular MSI Afteburner program. True, the version from EVGA uses a more interesting and colorful interface.

And now we propose to move from theory to practice and see what the graphics adapter NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti actually is.

Appearance

We received an OEM sample of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti video card in our test lab, so there is no description of the packaging and delivery set. Let’s move on to the appearance of the graphics adapter itself.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti has a design that has already become standard for «top» reference solutions. If you remove the inscription «GTX 780 Ti», then the new product is easy to confuse with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN. The entire front part is covered by a huge cooler with a stylish silver casing. Here, too, the cooling system consists of an evaporation chamber and a radial fan. This configuration provides good heat dissipation from the main components of the device, as well as the release of heated air outside the case. True, the disadvantage of such coolers, as a rule, is increased noise at a high rotation speed of the “turbine”. We will definitely check this point a little later, during testing.

Another element of the cooling system is a solid aluminum plate that is in contact with the memory chips and the power part of the power converter. It also serves as a kind of stiffener for the video card and a base for mounting the fan.

Overall, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is not a big model. With a length of 28.1 cm (according to our measurements), it can be installed in most modern cases.

The width of the novelty is standard, and the cooling system is designed in such a way that it overlaps only two expansion card slots in the computer. On one side is the inscription «GEFORCE GTX», which is highlighted in green during operation — a proprietary feature of the «top» reference solutions from NVIDIA.

The back of the PCB is of little interest. The only thing that attracts attention is the presence of places for additional memory chips. It is clear that the layout of the tracks on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti board remained from its «donor» — NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN. But it also suggests that, perhaps, after a while we will see versions of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti with 6 GB of memory “on board”. At least, there are all the prerequisites for this, the main thing is that NVIDIA itself gives the green light.

To display images on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti, the following set of interfaces is provided:

  • 1 x DVI-I;
  • 1 x DVI-D;
  • 1 x HDMI;
  • 1 x DisplayPort.

This set can be considered optimal, since it covers a very wide range of video interfaces and allows you to connect monitors of various types.

The following resolutions are supported:

  • digital — up to 40

    In general, the structure of the power converter has not changed. It is made according to the 6 + 2 + 1 phase scheme (for GPU, memory chips and PLL, respectively). There are no comments on the quality of the elements: solid-state and tantalum capacitors, as well as chokes with ferrite cores, are installed in all circuits.

    The power section of the GPU power converter includes six FDMF6823A integrated circuits (one for each phase), which are based on DrMOS (Driver + Mosfet) technology. This chip combines two FETs, a full-featured driver, and a clamping diode in one low-profile, heat-resistant package. This solution allows to achieve higher efficiency compared to the conventional power converter topology. In particular, their efficiency can reach 93%, and the maximum load is 55 A.

    The power part of the memory power converter consists of conventional MOSFET transistors: two NTMFS4983NF and two NTMFS4925N.

    The NCP4206 chip from ON Semiconductor is used as a PWM controller. It can control six phases and, according to the specification, allows you to change the voltage in the range from 0.375 to 1.6 V. The advantage of this chip is that it is easy to control third-party utilities. In particular, you can raise the software voltmode limit to 1.3 V without any problems.

    In addition to the PCI Express x16 slot, the new items are powered through two additional connectors (6-pin and 8-pin) located on the end of the graphics adapter. Note that the disconnection of the PCI-E connectors is quite convenient: the casing of the cooling system does not interfere with this process.

    By the way, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti has an interesting feature called «Power Balancing», which will help you achieve better and more stable overclocking results. Its essence lies in the fact that it evenly distributes the load between three power sources (PCI Express x16 slot, 6-pin PCI-E and 8-pin PCI-E) while optimizing the video card parameters. This avoids the situation when one of them is overloaded, and the rest, on the contrary, underloaded.

    Naturally, a device of this level supports the NVIDIA SLI mode. Thanks to the presence of two connectors, you can create a very powerful gaming configuration that combines from two to four video accelerators.

    The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is based on the NVIDIA GK110 (Kepler) graphics chip, manufactured using a 28-nm process technology, which consists of 2880 universal shader pipelines (or CUDA cores in NVIDIA terminology) and includes 48 ROP units and 240 units texturing. The frequency of the graphics core is 876 MHz in nominal mode and 928 MHz — in turbo mode.

    However, there was another riddle. At the beginning of the article, we mentioned that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti uses a new version of the NVIDIA GK110 chip with the B1 index, which, in fact, can be read on the heat distributing cover of the GPU. However, the GPU-Z 0.7.4 utility identified it as revision A1, that is, as a graphics processor of the previous sample. Of course, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti model has just appeared on the market, and, most likely, the program simply does not correctly determine some information yet. But it also gives reason to doubt whether the transition to a new stepping was made at all? Similar rumors recently flooded the Internet, they only concerned the AMD Radeon R9 video accelerator280X and the fact that it does not use the AMD Tahiti XTL chip, but instead uses the regular AMD Tahiti XT2. Now fans of AMD products also have a reason to accuse a competitor of marketing fraud.

    As for video memory, there can’t be two opinions. Its total volume on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti is 3 GB. The memory was collected using 12 SK Hynix H5GQ2h34AFR chips. It is believed that microcircuits manufactured by this particular company are best adapted for high frequencies. Let us remind you once again that on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti model, the memory operates at a very high speed — 7 GHz. Data exchange is carried out via a 384-bit bus, while the throughput reaches 336 GB / s.

    Cooling system

    As mentioned earlier, the cooling system is identical to the one we saw on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 models. Therefore, it makes little sense to describe it separately again. If you want to get acquainted with its design in more detail, we suggest clicking on the links above. We decided to focus primarily on evaluating the efficiency of the standard cooler and on its other parameters.

    The MSI Afterburner utility was used to monitor the performance of the video card.

    In automatic mode, with a continuous maximum load, the temperature of the graphics core reached 83°C, which can be considered not the best result for a product of this level. The fan ran at 62% of its power (about 2560 rpm according to the built-in tachometer), while the level of noise generated can be described as «medium, and quite comfortable for long hours at the computer.»

    In the maximum fan speed mode (about 4200 rpm according to the built-in tachometer), the GPU temperature dropped to 70°C. The generated noise stood out against the general background and was completely uncomfortable for constant work. However, it is worth noting here that this mode was activated deliberately, and in real operating conditions with automatic control of the speed of rotation of the fan blades, it is unlikely.

    When there is no load, the frequencies of the graphics core and memory are automatically reduced, which leads to a decrease in their power consumption and heat dissipation. The fan in this mode rotates at a speed of 26% of the maximum (about 1140 rpm according to the built-in tachometer). At the same time, almost no noise is emitted, and the GPU temperature does not exceed 36 ° C.

    Introduction

    The KFA2 brand is a European brand owned by Galaxy (now Galax). The purpose of its creation is obvious. Firstly, Nvidia does not like it when not only reference video cards, but also accelerators of the original design are released under the same trademark. Secondly, if you create models with a non-reference design, it is easier to do it under your own brand.

    Some manufacturers sometimes just separate such products into a separate line, but Galaxy went its own way. The KFA brand focuses exclusively on the European market, providing support and return services.

    The main goal of the company is to provide products based on two main elements: performance and quality. It highlights several of its key advantages:

    • Development and production of graphics accelerators of its own design;
    • Use of non-reference cooling systems only;
    • Overclocked devices are standard;
    • Fully European brand;
    • Support services located in Europe;
    • Supported by the parent company Galaxy, founded in 1994.

    Thanks to our partner, Regard, this review will focus on the KFA2 GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF Edition video card. Against the background of its competitors, it stands out with high factory overclocking, a reinforced power subsystem, an original printed circuit board and an impressive cooling system.

    recommendations

    KFA2 GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF Edition review

    Full name: KFA2 GTX 780 Ti HOF 3GB 384-bit, vendor code: missing.

    Packaging and delivery

    The KFA2 GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF Edition comes in a medium-sized box with bright, colorful prints dominated by navy blue and a prominent «Play hard — game harder» text in the center. In the lower right corner there is a sticker “LTD OC Edition” – the video card has a colossal factory overclock, as emphasized by the manufacturer.

    On the opposite side, there is no technical specification for the graphics accelerator, however, there is a small note about a two-year warranty in various languages, including Russian. To activate it, you must register the product on the site. The favorite way to post screenshots of popular games has not disappeared anywhere: each image is accompanied by a brief description of new features.

    The manufacturer brought the information about the technologies supporting the accelerator to the edge of the box, where you won’t notice them right away. There is also information about the contents of the box — the video card. Where is the delivery kit? In general, there are enough «blunders» on the packaging.

    The list of system requirements for the computer has not disappeared. The developers recommend using a high-quality power supply with a power of at least 600 W for a single KFA2 GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF Edition video card, the design of which must contain one six-pin and one eight-pin PCI-Express connectors, and a Core i7 central processor with a clock speed above 3.2 GHz. Apparently, the manufacturer is not indifferent to the Intel brand.

    Looking ahead, here is another mistake — this model uses enhanced power supply according to the “8 + 8” scheme, and not “8 + 6” as given above.

    Inside one box is hidden another made of thick black cardboard, pleasant to the touch.

    Hiding under the lid, poured «with a pea», lo and behold!, delivery set.

    Complete list of accessories is as follows:

    • User manual;
    • CD with drivers and software;
    • Two power adapters type 2xMolex -> 8-pin;
    • DVI-D to D-Sub adapter;
    • «Gaming/Oveclocking — DO NOT DISTURB!!!» door hanger («Do not disturb»).

    Appearance and dimensions

    The first thing that catches your eye on the KFA2 GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF Edition is the impressive size of the novelty and the fully developed design of the video card in white.

    And this is worth talking about in more detail. Not every time at exhibitions dedicated to the imminent release and announcement of new video card models, manufacturers manage to surprise the public with their products: always dark-colored models try to be emphasized by bright yellow, red, blue inserts, often backlit or with an image of an unseen creature. But the developers from Galaxy/KFA2 decided to go further by changing the approach. Taking the best practices of their models as a basis, and preferring white color, the Hall of Fame line of video cards was born, which changed the general idea of graphic accelerators, at least in terms of their appearance.

    Our heroine KFA2 GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF Edition was no exception, built on a white printed circuit board using a proprietary Hybrid Vapor Chamber Heat Pipe (HVCP) cooling system with two 90 mm fans, a vapor chamber and heat pipes, the heart of which served as a powerful NVIDIA GK110 (Kepler) graphics chip in the GK110-425-B1 modification, manufactured using a 28-nm process technology with 2880 CUDA cores.

    But for now, stop praising our guest and switch to studying its parameters. And so far everything is standard: the following set of interfaces is provided for displaying an image on a video card:

    • One DVI-I;
    • One DVI-D;
    • One HDMI;
    • One DisplayPort.

    According to the technical information, the following resolutions are supported by the graphics accelerator:

    • Digital — up to 4096 x 2160;
    • Analog — up to 2048 x 1536.

    As we can see, this set of video outputs corresponds to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti of the reference design. It is not surprising, because such a scheme has proven itself well and allows you to connect systems with analog and digital connectors.

    An attentive reader may notice some black toggle switch or button on the rear panel. The developer calls the switch nothing else than “Hyper Boost button”, here is what the manufacturer himself says about this technology:

    “Pressing the Hyper Boost button engages special circuitry and internal optimizations, pushing clock speeds into overdrive and raising fan speeds accordingly. Hyper Boost increases core clocks by up to 8% beyond GPU Boost 2.0’s dynamic overclocking function and users’ custom OC settings. Multiple world record benchmark scores have been broken already as a result.”

    Without going into details in simple terms, this means that when it is pressed, special schemes and optimizations are activated, allowing you to remove a number of restrictions necessary for good overclocking. We conducted a number of tests in the laboratory, which will be discussed in the corresponding section, however, looking ahead, I will say that we did not receive an increase in clock frequency up to 8% by default. It may be that certain conditions were not recreated, or it may be the firmware version of our instance, however, no other BIOS modifications were found on the network.

    We unfold the accelerator with the reverse side towards us and see a metal plate that completely covers the printed circuit board. It not only gives the structure additional rigidity and prevents bending of the board textolite, but also participates in the cooling of some microcircuits.

    Next to the rear panel in the old fashioned way there are two connectors for implementing NVIDIA SLI technology for connecting the corresponding bridges, which allow you to combine from two to three video accelerators for joint calculation of graphic effects.

    There is an inscription along the entire length with the name of the Hall of Fame series, which received a pleasant white backlight that blinks at times. It is worth paying tribute to the developers, because it can be turned off, it’s a pity not in a programmatic way, but by disconnecting a special wiring. Personally, I would take advantage of this opportunity, since my A4Tech Bloody R8 Black gaming mouse, case fans and ASUS ROG Maximus VII Hero motherboard have a red indication that against their background at night the white “light” from the center of the case does not look very good.

    As mentioned earlier, the KFA2 GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF Edition is equipped with additional eight-pin power connectors located on the corner of the PCB. Despite the close location of the casing of the cooling system, disconnecting the wires is very convenient and does not cause inconvenience.

    It’s time to deal with the dimensions of our heroine. And the first thing to report is the length. In the case of the KFA2 GeForce GTX 780 Ti HOF Edition, it is 290 mm, the width reaches 136 mm due to the protruding heat pipes, and the height reaches 52 mm, so the card will block three expansion slots in the case.
