AMD Radeon RX 580 To Feature Polaris 20 and RX 560 To Feature Polaris 21 GPUs
AMD’s Radeon RX 500 series graphics card will be launching in mid-April and we know a little more about time. The latest details come from Benchlife who have shared the GPU codenames of AMD’s mainstream and rebadged graphics family.
AMD Radeon RX 500 Series To Be Based on Improved 14nm LPP — Same GPU Architecture But Slightly Better Efficiency
The main difference in terms of GPU design on the Radeon RX 500 series cards would from a slightly updated 14nm LPP process node. This would deliver some efficiency gains and higher clock speeds compared to the previous variants.
14nm FinFET LPP Technology To Be Featured on Polaris 20, Polaris 21 and Polaris 12 GPUs
The GPUs utilizing the new process nodes are rebadges of the current GPU lineup. The Polaris 10 GPU will be known as Polaris 20 and Polaris 11 will be known as Polaris 21.
- 14LPP (Low Power Plus) – Enhanced version with higher performance and lower power; a full platform offering with MPW, IP enablement and wide application coverage.
The enhanced process will enable for slightly higher clock speeds at lower power consumption but we shouldn’t expect the same jump as from 28nm to 14nm.
AMD Radeon RX 580 Graphics Card Specifications:
The AMD Radeon RX 580 is expected to feature a slightly higher clocked Polaris 20 XTX GPU. So this would be similar to many custom variants of the Radeon RX 480 that are currently available in the market. AMD Radeon RX 580 will feature all 2304 stream processors, 144 TMUs, 32 ROPs.
The chip itself will be clocked at 1340 MHz boost to deliver 6.17 TFLOPs of compute performance. There would be 8 GB of GDDR5 memory onboard, clocking in at 8.0 GHz along a 256-bit bus interface. The card would pump out 256 GB/s bandwidth. Expect pricing to get slightly lower than the RX 480, around $199 for the 8 GB model.
AMD Radeon RX 570 Graphics Card Specifications:
The second card to feature the Polaris 20 XL GPU would be the Radeon RX 570. This card would be similar to the RX 470, featuring a cut down Polaris core with 2048 Cores. The card would additionally feature a clock of 1244 MHz boost which given the core specs are correct, would yield compute output of 5. 10 TFLOPs.
In terms of memory, we are looking at up to 8 GB of GDDR5 which will be clocked at a higher 7.0 GHz clock to deliver 224 GB/s bandwidth. Pricing wise, this card can hit around the $149 US price range.
AMD Radeon RX 560 Graphics Card Specifications:
The AMD Radeon RX 560 would be the full Polaris 11 GPU. AMD launched their RX 460 with a locked core but AIBs later launched fully unlocked variants with 1024 stream processors. The Radeon RX 560 would be similar to these with a clock speed of 1287 MHz. This will deliver a rated output of 2.63 TFLOPs along with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory along a 128-bit bus interface. Given AMD’s RX 460 price to value ratio at the launch period, AMD may price this under $100 US.

Hallo liebes Forum,

canfactory.tistory.com

How to overclock amd radeon video card
Overclocking
The card is equipped with two BIOS. For an ordinary user, this is not the most necessary “feature”, however, if you want to experiment with overclocking, then you can quite practice on one of the BIOSes without fear of burning the card completely. If so, you will have a second try.
How is the second BIOS related to overclocking? Everything is very simple. Most people overclock video cards using specialized utilities. This is a simple and effective way. But for this, additional software must always be installed in the system. It is much more efficient to flash a modified BIOS into the video card, which will work with the parameters that you set for it, regardless of any software.
Performance
To evaluate the performance of the model under consideration, a test bench of the following configuration was assembled:
- Intel Core i7-2600K processor;
- cooler Scythe MUGEN 3
- motherboard ASUS Maximus V GENE;
- RAM Kingston HyperX Genesis Gray DDR3-2133 2×2 GB;
- Kingston SSDNow! V+ 64 GB;
- power supply Enermax Revolution 85+ 1250W;
- OS — Windows 7 x64, driver — Catalyst 12.6
The purpose of publishing the above results is to give an opportunity to evaluate the advantage of the HD7970-DC2T-3GD5 over the reference adapter, since a separate material is devoted to the study of the performance of the Radeon HD 7970 on our resource.
Lastly, a bonus. Photo of the card prepared for overclocking using liquid nitrogen.
In addition to the resistors connected to the test points, we note the capacitor and inductor soldered to the back of the RSV
Either on purpose or through negligence, ASUS engineers made it so that they normally interfere with the installation of overall COs (glasses for LN2). Have to «fix»
Overclocking
For those who have already introduced the Radeon HD 7970 to liquid nitrogen, Tahiti opened up in all its glory, surprising with stable operation at 1500-1600 MHz even in CrossFire configurations. Overclockers who have managed to acquire several Radeon HD 7970s, to the envy of their less fortunate colleagues, are actively setting new world records in classic applications from Futuremark.
Unfortunately, at the time of testing, the available overclocking tools did not allow us to change the supply voltage, as well as increase the GPU frequency above 1125 MHz — the limit set in the driver. Reaching the indicated value was no problem even with the standard voltage. +200 MHz is already a very good increase compared to the recommended value, but this is certainly not the limit for the new chip. The question of the possibility of overclocking remains open, and we will definitely return to it. It will be especially interesting to evaluate the potential of the final Radeon HD 7970 that will go to retail. Nevertheless, an engineering sample of a video card has been in our hands. However, we can already say that 1 GHz for Tahiti is only the beginning. Considering the ease with which such frequencies are given to a new crystal, video card manufacturers in the future will most likely use more impressive starting values for the graphics core for their turbocharged modifications.
As for the memory, the considered video card uses 2-gigabit Hynix H5GQ2h34MFR-ROC chips with a base frequency of 6 GHz. Since the standard value for the Radeon HD 7970 is 5500 MHz, the microcircuit initially has a certain margin for overclocking.
28nm process works wonders. Despite the significantly increased chip complexity, as well as the increased number of functional units and transistors, Tahiti operates at very high clock speeds. In this regard, their 40-nm ancestors «blown away» much earlier.

PlaidML: cross-platform at the forefront
TensorFlow serves as a backend for Keras, interpreting its syntax and converting it into instructions that can be executed on the CPU or GPU. Unfortunately, it only supports graphics cards with Nvidia CUDA technology.
PlaidML is an alternative backend for Keras with OpenCL support. It can be used to train Keras models on an integrated CPU GPU, a discrete GPU, or even an external AMD GPU. It works on Windows, Linux and Mac.
UPD: User MikeLP stated in his comment that:
the inclusion of Keras in Tensorflow happened recently and the API did not have time to change significantly. However, the future prospects of Keras + PlaidML look vague.
Installing PlaidML is very easy. You need to install a Python package and select a device in the step-by-step configurator:
In the code, you need to specify the use of PlaidML as a backend:
After that, all calculations will be performed on the video card. Let’s run the benchmark:
Let’s compare the results of our video adapter with some others. I tested the RX 580 and Ryzen 2600 locally, the results of the rest of the devices are taken from other users:

AMD video adapters are noticeably slower than Nvidia video cards. However, the gap between video cards is an order of magnitude smaller than the gap between video cards and processors. The exception is Intel HD Graphics: PlaidML is completely unoptimized for Intel graphics cards and their use does not make much sense.
In work
Sapphire did not become original, using the recommended frequency formula for the chip and memory — 925/5500 MHz. The algorithm of the cooling system is also similar to that of the reference model. In idle mode, the fan rotates at a speed of about 1050 rpm, which is enough to cool the GPU on an open bench up to 34–35 C. After an active ride in DiRT3, the core temperature increased to 77 degrees, and the fan speed increased to about 2300 rpm min. During extreme load in FurMark, the chip warmed up to 81 degrees, while the fan speed increased to 2450 rpm.
Let’s note a characteristic feature of CO operation — the propeller rotates at a minimum speed until the GPU heats up to 60 degrees, after exceeding this threshold, the fan speed increases linearly in proportion to the heating of the core. On the whole, the cooler operates quite quietly in the normal mode. At rest, the noise level is minimal, under load it grows, but does not cause much discomfort.
Design and layout
Externally, the Sapphire HD 7970 3 GB GDDR5 is almost identical to the reference sample. The only noticeable difference is the sticker with the brand name on the top cover of the cooler. Another visual difference is the color of the PCB. The test samples used bright red PCBs, while the mass-produced devices that hit the retail market have a black PCB.
Structurally, Sapphire Radeon HD7970 3 GB is a two-slot adapter. The cooling system used is based on the evaporation chamber, a type-setting radiator cassette with aluminum plates, which is blown by a centrifugal fan.
The mounting panel has four interface connectors — a pair of mini DisplayPort, HDMI and one DVI. All connectors are arranged in one row. The second tier is occupied by a grille for the output of heated air outside the system unit.
There are also no changes on the top panel — two MIO connectors for connecting video cards into CrossFireX multi-adapter bundles, a miniature switch for selecting the active chip with firmware, and a pair of connectors (for 6 and 8 pins) for connecting additional power.
Although the production Radeon HD 7970 graphics cards use an identical reference circuit board, the color scheme is not the only feature of the products that went into retail boxes. For the latter, AMD decided to simplify the power subsystem somewhat. In particular, we are talking about reducing the number of stabilizer phases. To make sure of this, you don’t even need to remove the cooling system, just look at the layout of the elements on the reverse side of the PCB.
The engineering sample used a 6+1 power supply, while the video card in question, as well as other similar adapters on the same design, are content with six phases in a 5+1 configuration. Probably, AMD decided to leave some groundwork, having plans to release faster adapters based on Tahiti to compete with the competitor’s future solutions. As for the Radeon HD 7970, this will definitely not affect the operation of the adapter in the normal mode, but let’s try to find out whether it will affect the overclocking potential.
Power consumption
The appetites of today’s gaming PCs are causing trouble for many users. True, due to different conditions for a resident of Russia and other European countries, they have a different character: the main problem of a Russian is to buy a good enough power supply so that he can “pull out” a powerful config, and a European is not to go broke on electricity bills after buying a powerful system unit . But in the context of the topic under discussion (power consumption of video cards of the 7xxx family), these are already details.
A few years ago, CPU manufacturers promoted «performance per watt»
Its meaning and importance are clear without explanation — the larger it is, the more performance the system has with the same power consumption. But in practice, an ordinary user can feel its influence only in electricity bills, if you stock up on a sufficiently accurate measuring device and load the PC with strictly defined tasks for the same number of hours.
This parameter is much more interesting for large companies, which manage many PCs that consume hundreds of kilowatts.

Before proceeding with the testing itself, it would be nice to understand how to set up cards to work in CFX mode. To do this, we need two identical video cards (of the same series, it can be from different manufacturers and with different frequencies), a motherboard that supports this fun company (two PCIe x16 slots are required, almost any modern «motherboard» is friends with CFX, you should beware of solutions based on nForce ) and a special bridge, with the help of which two cards are connected in tandem.
After installing the cards and connecting them with a special CrossFire bridge, you need to update the Catalyst drivers (reinstall the existing version or download a new one). The drivers themselves will determine the second card and if everything is fine, they will allow you to use the CFX mode.
This is how the bridge connecting the cards in CrossFireX looks like:
0003
That’s it — now you can enjoy the dual power of the brand new Radeon HD 7970!
Now let’s take a look at the photos of the video card Radeon HD 7970 from ASUS. Although I will immediately warn you that we will not see anything new here compared to what we saw in the review of the regular HD 7970 (because it is a reference).
I already wrote that even after five generations of video cards, ASUS will continue to «abuse» the poor knight on an evil horse … apparently, it seems to be so.
The video card comes with various adapters (they don’t tell us exactly which ones), a disk with software and drivers, and a CrossFireX bridge.
The product from ASUS differs from the AMD reference card only by a sticker.
Video card length — 27 centimeters. The consumption of the HD 7970 is named around 210 watts, the novelty is powered by 8 and 6-pin power supply connectors. A 550 watt power supply should be enough for one such card in a decent system.
Connectors for building a CrossFireX tandem, so you can combine up to four HD 7970s. To the right of the CFX connectors, you can see the BIOS switch — in position «1» the user is free to set any frequencies and voltages on the core (with the appropriate software), and if you switch to «2», then it will not be possible to change anything — there are «protected» non-changeable factory parameters.
Video outputs: two mini-DP, HDMI and DVI.
Looking ahead, Gilbert says that the cooling system is far from silent, but its operation cannot be called particularly loud either. It is a pity that they do not show us the printed circuit board of the product.

In operation
ASUS HD7970-DC2T-3GD5 operates normally at 1000/1400 (5600) MHz. This is one of the best indicators in its class.
Today, the definition of the «ASIC Quality» parameter, most commonly referred to as «GPU die quality», is popular. The higher this figure, supposedly the lower the nominal voltage of the graphics chip and the higher its overclocking in air-cooled conditions. However, such data are ambiguous, and you should not pay special attention to them.
We will not go into a detailed study of the characteristics of the components soldered onto the card. We only note that the manufacturer uses Hynix H5GQ2h34MFR R0C memory chips, with a total capacity of 3 GB.
For a user who has bought an HD7970-DC2T-3GD5, noise and performance are undoubtedly the main selection criteria. To evaluate the efficiency of the considered cooling system, we compared the temperature data of the ASUS card with the data on the reference model Radeon HD 7970.
The noise level was assessed using the TDJ-814 instrument, located at a distance of 1 m from the open test bench.
Impressive, right? Since ASUS uses high fans with a large impeller diameter in the solution under consideration, they provide acceptable cooling efficiency even at low speeds, practically without betraying themselves in operation.
GPU architecture
Tahiti graphics processor is not a direct descendant of the Caymanxx). This is a fundamental new architecture designed for universal use. Manufacturers have long realized that the use of video cards for complex specific calculations, «indigestible» by central processors, significantly expands the circle of potential buyers. A large selection of models and the ability to combine multiple boards to increase performance and gives the end user the flexibility to change the configuration depending on the needs. Several years of practice have shown the correctness of the choice of development direction — accelerators of the five thousandth and six thousandth series are widely used in video and audio coding, in graphic stations and for distributed computing.
Performance
We already know the capabilities of AMD’s top GPU solution and its place in the general hierarchy of video cards currently available on the market. In this case, we were more interested in the performance boost provided by the increased frequencies of ASUS MATRIX HD 7970 Platinum in normal mode, as well as after additional tuning.
Given the very good performance scalability of the Radeon HD 7970, additional overclocking allowed the new product to break away from the reference model by 25–29 in test applications and real games%. The video card is capable of more, the only question is whether you are ready for extreme experiments.
Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition returns intrigue to the segment of top graphics accelerators. Of course, solutions with Tahiti XT2 and GK104 chips will still have certain advantages in various gaming situations, but in general, the capabilities of video cards based on these GPUs are very similar.
Summary
ASUS MATRIX HD 7970 Platinum is an interesting choice for those who are not ready to compromise when buying the highest performance gaming video card
A seriously reinforced platform and advanced adapter fine-tuning options will also attract the attention of the most demanding enthusiasts who dream of world records. A very efficient cooling system deserves special attention
The adapter with a large cooler occupies three expansion slots, but this is unlikely to stop the connoisseurs of silence, who do not recognize graphics quality settings below the maximum.
Estimated retail price of ASUS MATRIX HD 7970 Platinum — $539. The amount is impressive, however, the difference in price with classmates is fully compensated by improved equipment, enhanced circuitry, serious factory overclocking and effective CO.
+ Very high performance
+ Quiet and efficient cooling system
+ Serious factory tuning
+ Good overclocking potential
+ Wide arsenal of overclocking tools
+ Spectacular load indicator 9004 occupies three expansion slots 003

AMD certainly caught the trend of heterogeneous computing. Moreover, in the current situation, we can say that the company is contributing in every possible way to its development. At least in terms of hardware. It is likely that on a global scale and in the near future, Graphics Core Next will help AMD to assert itself more strongly as a solution provider for a wide variety of tasks and applications: from ultimate gaming systems to HPC computing.
As for the Radeon HD 7970 itself, the video card deserves praise. At the moment it is the most productive single-chip graphics adapter. Without any discounts, reservations and clarifications. The new product has a total advantage over the flagship of the previous generation, providing 30-70% higher performance than the Radeon HD 6970. It also managed to get ahead of its main competitor — the GeForce GTX 580 — although the difference here is already more modest.
Nevertheless, for those who are ready to spend about $500 on a video card, the choice is not so clear. The price of a GeForce GTX 580 with a reference cooling system and recommended clock speeds has dropped significantly over the past two to three months. This model can already be purchased for $460-470. Whereas the retail price of the Radeon HD 7970 3GB in Ukraine is expected at $600. AMD did not overestimate its device, but rather set the bar with which the Radeon HD 7970 offers approximately the same price / performance ratio as the top Californian solution. The latter, although it turns out to be slower, is also cheaper. Therefore, dumping did not work, although it was very desirable. However, we know that AMD is able to quickly respond to the market situation, skillfully adjusting its pricing policy. Fortunately for users, there is fierce competition in the discrete graphics segment, and there is no clear leader, which often allows you to dot the “i” in the price issue using purely market methods.
The Radeon HD 7970 is a solid solution with excellent performance, advanced functionality, technological innovations and good potential. Except for the price, in fact, this adapter has no other weaknesses. One way or another, the leadership jersey deservedly goes to AMD. At least for the next couple of months, after which NVIDIA will also present its own developments with 28nm GPUs and the new Kepler architecture. So the next graphic party also promises to be very interesting.
Terminals
In 2021, in the field of machine learning, it becomes less and less important what kind of graphics card you have. AMD video cards are still significantly behind their Nvidia counterparts in performance, but at the same time they are cheaper
However, support for Radeon graphics cards is far from ideal, and the necessary setup for them is more complicated and time consuming.
If you already have an AMD graphics card, you may not need to upgrade to an Nvidia graphics card for development purposes. I think the ROCm framework is the best choice for machine learning on Radeon video cards. It provides decent performance and allows you to run TensorFlow 2.2.0 and Keras.
Conclusion
The overclocking of the ASUS HD 7970 was a pleasant surprise. The GPU overclocked from the default 925 MHz to 1200 without increasing the voltage. This is the reason for such a high increase in performance during overclocking. To be honest, this is a very pleasant moment. Recently, video cards have been accelerating worse and worse, so the need for overclocking disappears: if the video card does not pull the game in default, then poor overclocking by 50 MHz will not correct the situation. This is clearly a different case.
The only thing that confuses the novelty is the exorbitant noise level when manually increasing the speed. And it is necessary for successful overclocking, otherwise you have every chance to burn the video card. But, I think, over time, this problem will be solved — there will be many alternative cooling systems. The main thing is that the overclocking potential does not change for the worse.
High performance, low heat generation, and new proprietary technologies make the AMD Radeon HD 7970 graphics card the best single-GPU graphics card available today. Moreover, when overclocked, the new product easily competes with the dual-processor monster Radeon HD 6990. Therefore, if you have a question: “which is better: HD 7970 or HD 6990?”, Then I recommend choosing the first option.
