8086K sweepstakes: Intel’s i7 8086K sweepstake opens tonight – here’s how to get in

Intel responds to AMD’s trolling over Core i7-8086K sweepstakes

AMD attempted to troll Intel yesterday by offering 40 winners of the company’s Core i7-8086K sweepstakes the opportunity to trade their prize for a Threadripper 1950X, noting that it has more cores, cache, and PCIe lanes. The accompanying commentary made it sound as though Intel’s time had passed, like an aging superstar (Kobe Bryant’s final season, if anyone needs a point of reference), and that AMD was ready to take the reigns. Have a look:

Celebrating the past is neat, but here at AMD we are focused on the future and the next 40 years of high-performance computing. Exchange your prize for a Threadripper 1950X processor! Intel could have ignored AMD’s backhanded compliment, but where’s the fun in that? Instead, it offered up a humorous response, telling AMD it could have just asked if it wanted a Core i7-8086K so badly.

Twitter spats can turn ugly in a hurry, as we’ve all seen, but this exchange between AMD and Intel is proof that it doesn’t have to go down that way. It also underscores AMD’s rise to relevance with Zen.

The last time AMD had a truly competitive solution in the high-end consumer desktop space was the Athlon 64. It was a different era back, before social media grew into what it is today. In that regard, you really can’t blame AMD for taking a shot at Intel.

It’s a fine line these two companies are walking. They’re competitors, obviously, but they also recently collaborated on a module pairing an Intel Core processor with custom Radeon Vega graphics. It’s a different dynamic between AMD and Intel than, say, Apple and Samsung.

How it all plays out going forward remains to be seen. That said, there will be more opportunities for AMD and Intel to trade barbs on Twitter, with Intel eventually releasing Cannon Lake and AMD launching Zen 2. Intel is also planning to release its first modern discrete GPU in 2020.

AMD offers winners of Intel’s Core i7-8086K contest a 16-core Threadripper CPU instead

If you’re one of the lucky 8,086 people who won a limited-edition 5GHz Core i7-8086K CPU from Intel, AMD says it has better offer for you: Its offering 40 people who won the 8086K a straight-up exchange for a 16-core Threadripper 1950X CPU.

This all started when Intel announced a limited-edition Coffee Lake S-based 5GHz Core i7-8086K to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its first CPU: the 8086. Besides selling the limited-edition chip, Intel also ran a contest to give away 8,086 of the CPUs.

Now AMD is throwing shade.

“Our competitor recently kicked off a sweepstakes to celebrate the first 40 years of the x86 processor by giving away 8,086 limited edition processors,” AMD officials said in post. “We appreciate the advancements they’ve helped drive with the x86 architecture over the last four decades. But, we’re ready to take it from here. That’s why we’re giving 40 performance-hungry enthusiasts in the U. S. an opportunity to celebrate the next 40 years of high-performance computing by trading in their commemorative processor prize for our CPU that enables you to work, play and create with heavy metal.”

Intel

If you won a Core i7-8086K would you trade it for a Threadripper?

So much snark

If you didn’t read AMD’s announcement closely you might have missed the snark, but make no mistake, it’s crafted for maximum disrespect: In essence, AMD attaches the Core i7-8086K to the last 40 years, and positions Threadripper as the forward-looking alternative.

Naturally, AMD goes on to answer the obvious question: “Why would I want a Ryzen Threadripper 1950X?”

“We’ll let the numbers do the talking: 16 cores. 32 threads. 64 PCIe Gen3 lanes. 40MB cache. Need more? Unrestrained performance for all your workloads,” says the company, in the most hater voice possible.

The rivalry between Intel and AMD has been heating up since AMD’s first Ryzen CPU was released last year.

Core i7-8086K vs. Threadripper 1950X

If you’re wondering which CPU would win, our own tests of the Threadripper 1950X versus the Core i7-8700K, which the Core i7-8086K is based on, is inconclusive. Each excels in certain tasks. There’s one measure that’s indisputable, however: economics.

Today, you can find the 5GHz Core i7-8086K for $425, while the 16-core Threadripper 1950X goes for $800.

Exchange details

To do the exchange, AMD says you have to be 18 and live in the United States. You’ll also need to enter to win. And no kids, this doesn’t mean you can buy a retail 8086K and enter—AMD says the contest is only open to those who won the Intel CPU as part of the two-day giveaway. AMD’s own contest for the exchange will occur on June 25 at 1 p.m. EDT.

Granted, AMD’s contest isn’t as generous as Intel’s, which gave away about $3.5 million worth of CPUs, but that’s clearly not AMD’s point. Instead AMD is taking the tack that shade thrown is better than shade not thrown.

The organizers of the Intel Core i7-8086K draw created a number of bureaucratic obstacles to receiving prizes

Last week, the winners of Intel’s giveaway, in which 8086 copies of the «anniversary» Core i7-8086K processor were distributed in some countries, began to receive chain letters, from which they learned that the organizers of the action reserve the right to deliver prize processors until October 15 of the current year. Of course, waiting for a free processor does not require much effort, but someone may not have enough patience.

Moreover, as noted by some winners, already at the stage of confirming personal data, they have some problems. For example, residents of China are forced to provide a mailing address for the delivery of a prize in English, and this may create problems when moving a parcel through China. The feedback form does not provide a phone number for contacting the recipient of the prize.

recommendations

Someone has a problem of a different nature. Not all e-mail addresses specified during registration in the draw are accepted by the organizers as reliable, and it is impossible to send proof of identity from another address. In this case, you have to contact the customer support service of the company that organized the draw. In general, in some cases, the winners will have to work hard to get their free processor.

AMD has launched an unusual promotion in which they will exchange limited edition Intel Core i7-8086K processors for a sixteen-core Ryzen Threadripper 1950X. Citizens of the United States will be able to take part in the action.

    AMD trolls Intel

AMD announced an advertising campaign designed to popularize their own solutions and slightly spoil the positive effect of the free distribution of processors previously organized by Intel. The terms and conditions of the promotion are published on the official website of the company.

In accordance with the terms of the promotion, 40 lucky adults from the USA will be able to replace the won Intel Core i7-8086K with a more powerful and expensive AMD Threadripper 19 for freeThe 50X, which features 16 cores, 32MB L3 cache, runs at a base clock speed of 3.4GHz and is capable of overclocking to 4GHz stock. The retail price of Threadripper is about $800.

In order to receive the coveted Ryzen, participants will need to forward their Intel Lottery win notification along with their personal details to a dedicated AMD email address. After the application is approved, the winner will have to send the prize to the company at his own expense. In response, AMD undertakes to send a brand new Threadripper within 4-6 weeks.

It is also worth noting that the participants’ expenses will not be limited to postal services. To take advantage of the swap in practice, new owners of free Threadripper 1950X will have to purchase a significantly more expensive X399 series motherboard with support for socket TR4 processors, which will cost at least $300.

Intel reacted to AMD’s daring move with humor: the official Intel Gaming twitter account posted the following message: “@AMDRyzen, if you also wanted to get a Core i7-8086K processor, you could just ask us. Thank you for your help in celebrating the anniversary of 8086!”.

At the beginning of June 2018, Intel released a limited series of Core i7-8086K processors, timed to coincide with the company’s fiftieth anniversary and the fortieth anniversary of the x86 architecture. The six-core novelty, according to Intel, became the company’s first desktop processor, which conquered the 5 GHz clock frequency mark. The nominal frequency of this model is actually only 3.
