i7-6700K
  • For some games, a cpu with a higher clock speed, or in a technical name IPC (Instructions per clock), has better results than other CPU’s with higher core count and lower core speed.
i9-9900K
  • The i9-9900K has higher Level 3 Cache. This is useful when you have substantial multiprocessing workloads, many computationally intense simultaneous processes. More likely on a server, less on a personally used computer for interactive desktop workloads.
  • The i9-9900K has more cores. The benefit of having more cores is that the system can handle more threads. Each core can handle a separate stream of data. This architecture greatly increases the performance of a system that is running concurrent applications.
  • The i9-9900K has more threads. Larger programs are divided into threads (small sections) so that the processor can execute them simultaneously to get faster execution.
  • The i9-9900K has a higher turbo clock boost. Turbo Boost is a CPU feature that will run CPU clock speed faster than its base clock, if certain conditions are present. It will enable older software that runs on fewer cores, to perform better on newer hardware. Since games are software too, it is also applicable to them.

it turned out that the CPU Core i9-9900K is so productive only because it is not subject to power limits

The Intel Core i9-9900K processor has been on sale for some time. Thematic resources have already published their reviews and, it would seem, all points are placed.

But no. It’s no secret that the new Intel turned out to be very voracious. With a formal TDP of 95 W, the processor under load consumes 40-50 W more than the Core i7-8700K, whose TDP is declared at the same level.

Yes, TDP is not an indicator of power consumption, it is a requirement for processor heat dissipation, but it is determined based on the actual power consumption of the CPU. TechSpot resource specialists decided to delve into this issue.

In short, just like with modern video cards, Intel processors have power limits. Everyone knows that the maximum CPU frequency varies depending on how many cores are loaded. For example, for the same Core i9-9900K, the 5 GHz limit is declared under the condition that only one core is loaded, while all eight cores can operate at a maximum of 4.7 GHz. All this is just regulated depending on the power limit, which for this CPU is the same 95 watts. That is, the maximum frequency in one case or another will be limited not by the CPU specifications, but by the power limit. This means that if, with a load on all eight cores, the processor’s power consumption reaches 95 W is already at a frequency of 4 GHz, then the frequency will not increase further, although it could.

However, it turned out that none of the motherboards used by the source specialists have any power limits for the Core i9-9900K by default, which means that the CPU frequencies are regulated not based on the limit, but on the basis of the maximum values provided by Intel . Simply put, the Core i9-9900K is never power-limited, so its power consumption is substantially higher than its predecessor at the same TDP. In fact, we have a situation that can be considered either as cunning (or even lies) on the part of Intel, or as the presence of a processor that always works in overclocked mode by default, and not in normal mode.

Against this background, the source decided to re-test this CPU, specifically limiting its power limit to the declared 95 watts.
