Red Bull Trans-Siberian Extreme champion Alexey Shchebelin: Almost 9200 kilometers without a single puncture!.

Distance from Moscow to Vladivostok — 9156 km — by bike. Not all of Russia, but already close. 24 days on the road of 14 stages. Of course, for those few who will master the path to the end. This is the program of the ultra-marathon road race «Trans-Siberian Extreme». This season, it was won by Aleksey Shchebelin from St. Petersburg, who spent a total of more than 312 hours behind the wheel — and this is in the race, at the maximum possible! Only three participants out of ten who started made it to the finish line. The champion told the correspondent of «Sport Day by Day» how cyclists eat on the go, where the best roads are in Russia and how fatigue begins.

Sandwich from the window

– The longest stage of the Trans-Siberian Extreme is…
– About 1400 km. Segment Chita — Free. I drove it in 52 hours and 30 minutes.

— 52+ hours on a bike?
— With sleep breaks. Two pauses of 30 minutes and one hour. We choose our own tactics. Someone can stop for 15 minutes, but many times.

— And after the stage finish?
— You go to the hotel, there is food, maybe a massage, and — you fall into bed. Back on the bike in the morning. And to the next step.

— What did you eat?
— Sports nutrition first. Bars, drinks. After 20 days, it starts to get boring, and then options are possible … Someone chewed the chips out of desperation! Harmful for an athlete, but, apparently, the standard food is too boring.

— Have you lost weight?
— For six kilograms. I ate well. In my opinion, the most in the race. Food is a source of energy. I tried to eat every 20 minutes.

— And how? The hands are busy.
— We had stationary food stations where you can rest and eat, but in general — on the go. Each rider has his own escort car. The guys make you a sandwich or unwrap a candy bar, hold it out the window — you eat.

Tigers avoided us

— Did you see the country during the tour?
— Of course, I was focused on the race. There are places where it is reluctant to look around. For example, a stage in the Omsk region. Long flat tedious plain… I wanted to cry. But further in Transbaikalia there are very unusual views.

— Crazy fans, like on the Grand Tours, met?
— In every city, cyclists accompanied us to the stage. A particularly good «support group» gathered in Chita. There were no crazy fans, but the drivers reacted to us in different ways. We moved in a convoy with an escort car in open traffic, sometimes causing small traffic jams. Someone from the window of passing cars wished good luck, and someone … sent in a different direction.

— Did you have any emergencies?
— No! Even the animals apparently avoided us, although we would like to see some kind of tiger. Small animals, like foxes, crossed the road, but without consequences. On the other hand, foreigners were nervous about the Russian organization of traffic on the roads. One American woman was especially indignant at how dangerous it was to drive here. I’m used to it. I train alone in the Leningrad region without any escort cars.

— Were you lucky with the weather too?
— In general, yes. I train in St. Petersburg, so I’m most afraid of the heat ( laughs ). It worked out. There were relatively hot stages, but then clouds would come, then rain, then wind.

Did you ride the whole race on one bike?
Yes. Without breakages and punctures — I’m the only one so lucky. I had a spare bike but didn’t need it.

— What will happen next with your miracle bike that has traveled all over Russia without a single puncture?
— It will be returned to me from Vladivostok ( laughs ). And I will continue to train on it.

Trained as a submariner

— About 9200 kilometers by bike. How do you not get tired of pedaling?
— Hard, of course, but it’s a race. Either you make it or you don’t.

— A very specific race. The track is long and there are few participants.
— Because few people dare to do that. I made the decision last year. Not very thoughtful. I learned that there is such a race and someone copes with it. I thought, why not give it a try? In 2016, no one mastered the track to the end. The last trio, including me, got off at that most difficult stage of Chita — Free. There was a storm downpour — the most difficult conditions. We simply did not have time to get there in time before the start of the next stage. There was no strength left. The decision to withdraw was made by vote of the participants. Came together — me, the Brazilian Marcelo Soares and the Austrian Eduard Fuchs. By common agreement, they decided to act together. I had the best time with a ten hour lead over Fuchs, so I was declared the winner of the junior classification. It’s nice, but there was a «bite mark». I wanted to win the general standings, that is, to go through the race to the end.

— Postponed finish for a year.
— You could say that. This year I knew for sure that I was physically ready to get to Vladivostok. More difficult with psychology. Now I understood at what stage to expect showers, where it would be very windy, and where it would be hot. Anticipating these «pleasures» is unpleasant! I tried all year not to think about the race. Just before leaving for the start, I thought: “Damn, but it will be hard.” But it was too late to refuse.

— How to prepare for such a long trip?
— None. It makes no sense to squeeze 500 kilometers in one workout. This is only to the detriment of the body. In training, I didn’t ride for more than five hours at a time. He put more emphasis on general physical training and tactics. Let’s say I expected that at the right moment I could easily move at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour.
