Introduction of AMD Catalyst Accelerated Parallel Processing («APP») technology Edition
There will now be two variants of the AMD Catalyst package available:

1. AMD Catalyst (comparable to prior versions in features and components) — currently includes the Direct3D, OpenGL, display driver and AMD Catalyst Control Center components

2. AMD Catalyst Accelerated Parallel Processing («APP») technology Edition — AMD Catalyst plus the OpenCL driver

Why you need Catalyst Control Center on your PC

Catalyst Control Center is a utility that comes with the driver for your AMD graphics card. It shows up as CCC. exe in the Task Manager, and in most cases, you won’t need it. You may need to dig into the Catalyst Control Center settings if you play games on your computer, and you might remember it if it ever gives you an error, but you can just ignore it.

What does the Catalyst Control Center do?

The Catalyst Control Center starts when the computer is turned on because it must run in the background to control the operation of the AMD graphics card. The same software was also used to manage ATI graphics cards before AMD acquired ATI, so older computers with ATI graphics cards may also have CCC.exe installed.

If you don’t play video games on your computer, you’ll probably never need to touch the Catalyst Control Center, but if you do, it’s pretty easy. The program allows you to check for driver updates for your video card and manage its operation.

Some basic actions you can perform using the Catalyst Control Center include changing the desktop resolution or area, and changing the screen refresh rate. There are also many more advanced settings that are mostly useful for gamers. For example, you can change the anti-aliasing settings to remove jagged edges in 3D objects.

If you have a laptop that has two graphics cards, you can also use the Catalyst Control Center to switch between them. This is useful if the game has poor performance and this is because the game does not use a powerful AMD graphics card.

How did CCC.exe get on your computer?

If you have an AMD graphics card, then CCC.exe is usually installed along with the driver that actually controls the graphics card. While it is possible to install just the driver, without the Catalyst Control Center, it is much more common to install them together as a package. Other executables such as MOM.exe are also included in this package.

In less common cases, your computer may have been infected with a virus or malware that masquerades as the Catalyst Control Center. If you have an Nvidia graphics card and have never had an AMD graphics card installed in your computer, this may be the case.

CCC.exe is a virus?

CCC.exe when you download directly from the AMD site is not a virus, of course, but viruses can disguise themselves as CCC.exe. Any good antivirus or anti-malware program will find this hidden problem, but you can also look at the location of CCC.exe on your computer for yourself. This can be done in six easy steps:

  • Press and hold control + alt + delete on your keyboard.
  • Click on “Task Manager”.
  • Go to the Processes tab.
  • Find CCC.exe in the Name column.
  • Write down what is written in the corresponding command line column.
  • If there is no command line column, right-click the Name column, and then left-click the Command Line label.
  • If your copy of CCC.exe is official, the location in the Command Line column will be something like Program Files (x86)/ATI Technologies . If CCC.exe is located anywhere else, this is a sign that it may be malware.

How can I fix CCC.

exe problems?

When CCC.exe starts to work incorrectly, it can cause an error message to pop up on the screen. Some common error messages are:

  • CCC.exe has stopped responding
  • CCC.exe is experiencing problems
  • Catalyst Control Center: The application has encountered an error and needs to close

This usually happens when the program is corrupted and the most common solutions are repairing the Catalyst Control Center or completely reinstalling it. In earlier versions of Windows, this can be done in Section Control Panel Programs and Features . On Windows 10, you must go to Apps and Features in Windows Settings .

An easier option is to simply download the latest version of the Catalyst Control Center directly from the AMD website. When you run the Catalyst Control Center installer, you must first uninstall the corrupted version before installing the working version.

Since the Catalyst Control Center is not a required utility, you can also simply stop it from starting when the computer boots.
