How to Properly Uninstall Nvidia or AMD/ATI GPU Drivers

As a GPU reviewer, I spend a ton of time testing both AMD and Nvidia GPUs using a variety of GPU drivers. Because I generally only use one testbench for testing so that benchmark results can be compared between different GPUs, I’m constantly faced with the need to properly uninstall old AMD or Nvidia GPU drivers.

While many of you simply uninstall your graphics driver in the Programs and Features menu in the Control Panel (and this is fine in many cases), removing drivers in such a way leaves behind extra registry keys and drivers in the driver store, which may sometimes cause issues such as blue screens, driver install hangs, weird display bugs, unusually low performance, and other annoying bugs. Generally this isn’t the case, but in situations where you’re dealing with Beta drivers or switching between GPUs from different vendors, there’s a good chance that some of these issues may pop up in one way or another.

Now before we begin, I have to go through the obligatory disclaimer. This guide is provided for informational purposes only. Custom PC Review, Custom Media Inc. and I take no responsibility for any problems that may arise from you using this guide. If you have no idea what you’re doing, please take your system to a professional.

Uninstalling the AMD/ATI or Nvidia Drivers

Alright then. First, let’s first uninstall your GPU drivers the typical way – through the GPU driver software’s provided uninstall utility. The newer driver utilities from both AMD and Nvidia are pretty good at removing most of the stuff that they install.

Windows 7

1. Click on the Start Menu

2. Click on Control Panel

3. Click on “Uninstall a Program” or “Programs and Features”

4. Find your AMD/ATI Catalyst or Nvidia Graphics driver, double click it and follow the steps in the driver’s uninstall utility.  Nvidia or AMD may sometimes install multiple applications, so don’t forget to uninstall everything.

Windows 8/8.1

1. Go to the Home Screen

2. Type in “Programs and Features” (Windows 8 users may have to click on the Settings tab at the right) in the search box and click on “Programs and Features” when it pops up.

3. Find your AMD/ATI Catalyst or Nvidia Graphics driver, double click it and follow the steps in the driver’s uninstall utility. Nvidia or AMD may sometimes install multiple applications, so don’t forget to uninstall everything.

Removing AMD/ATI or Nvidia drivers from the driver store

At this point, your GPU’s driver and software utility should be uninstalled. If you’re only doing an update to your current driver, you shouldn’t have any issues installing the new driver if you’re too lazy to do more.

However, if you’re upgrading to a beta driver or you’re planning on switching GPU vendors (Nvidia to AMD or vice versa), you’ll probably want to go through a more thorough driver removal. Additionally, if you’re experiencing issues with any driver that you’re currently using, I’d recommend removing the drivers from the registry and driver store as well.

Here’s how that’s done…

Windows 7

1. Click on the Start Menu

2. Type in “CMD” in the search box

3. Right click on “CMD.exe” when it pops up and left click “Run as Administrator”

4. Type in “pnputil.exe -e | more” and hit enter. This executes the Microsoft PnP Utility, which manages the driver store.

5. Search for any entries that are “Advanced Micro Devies, Inc.” or “Nvidia” under “Driver package provider” and are “Display adapters” under “Class”. Write down the “Published name”. For example, “oem133.inf”.

You can hit space to scroll one screen down or you can hit enter to go down one line at a time.

6. Now that you have a list of drivers that need to be deleted, simply go ahead and delete these drivers by typing in “pnputil. exe -f -d [Published name]” and hitting enter. For example, “pnputil.exe -f -d oem133.inf”. This will force delete the driver and it should also remove the registry key associated with the driver.

Do this one at a time until you’ve removed every driver you’ve written down in Step 5.

Windows 8/8.1

1. Go to the Home Screen

2. Type in “cmd” in the search box

3. Right click on “cmd” when it pops up and left click on “Run as administrator”.

Write the “Published name” down. For example, “oem13.inf”.

You can hit space to scroll one screen down or you can hit enter to go down one line at a time.

6. Now that you have a list of drivers that need to be deleted, simply go ahead and delete these drivers by typing in “pnputil. exe -f -d [Published name]” and hitting enter. For example, “pnputil.exe -f -d oem13.inf”. This will force delete the driver and it should also remove the registry key associated with the driver.

Do this one at a time until you’ve removed every driver you’ve written down in Step 5.

At this point, your old drivers should be cleaned out and you’re now ready to install your new AMD or Nvidia graphics driver. This is what I typically do for my test systems at Custom PC Review however, I know there are a number of additional methods for doing this as well as automated methods such as Driver Sweeper.

Got a better method that I should know about? Feel free to share in the comments below!

Do I need to use a cleanup driver when updating drivers? ?

Some geeks use «driver cleaners» when updating their drivers — usually graphics drivers — to ensure that the old driver is completely removed and there are no leftover files in conflict with the new driver. But is it necessary?

If you have ever used a driver’s cleaner, it was probably a few years ago. You won’t need to run them anymore unless you run into problems after updating your drivers.

What is a driver cleaner?

Hardware drivers are not just stand-alone pieces of software. When you install something like NVIDIA or AMD graphics drivers, the installer leaves many separate driver files all over your system.

When uninstalling an existing hardware driver, the uninstaller may not properly clean itself and leave some of these files behind. For example, you may have updated your NVIDIA or AMD graphics driver to the latest version. If the uninstaller was unable to remove all the old driver files, you can get driver files from two different versions. This can cause problems because these driver files were never designed to work together. A driver file conflict can lead to crashes, slowdowns, and other failures.

If you were worried about driver conflicts when updating, you can uninstall the driver using the standard uninstaller and then go through your system removing the hardware device and deleting the remaining driver files manually. The Driver Cleaner automates this last part — once the driver is removed, the Driver Cleaner will look for leftover files and remove them for you.

In the past…

Cleaners used to be much more popular utilities. There was a time when NVIDIA and ATI (now AMD) instructed their users to uninstall their existing graphics drivers before installing new drivers.

Users have uninstalled their existing graphics drivers, rebooted their Windows computers into low resolution VGA mode, and often ran the driver cleaner to make sure old drivers have been completely removed. They then installed the new graphics drivers again and rebooted Windows.

Drivers didn’t handle the update process in a meaningful way — users had to manually run the uninstaller, and users who never ran driver cleaners sometimes ran into problems when NVIDIA or ATI developers were able to completely remove previous driver files.

Different today

Today we live in a different world — the process is much more automated. NVIDIA and AMD graphics drivers automatically check for updates. When an update is available, they will download the graphics drivers and update them on the spot for you. The installer automatically removes the old drivers and installs the new one without even requiring you to restart Windows. The worst thing you will see is an instant black screen when the graphic drivers are switched.

This non-reboot upgrade process is made possible by the Windows Driver Model (WDDM) graphics driver architecture that was introduced in Windows Vista.

Is this necessary?

First of all, driver cleaners were generally only needed for graphics drivers. Other drivers may experience the same issues when updating, but Windows users tend to run into problems with their graphics drivers. You probably shouldn’t worry about updating most of your hardware drivers anyway, but you should update your graphics drivers if you want the best PC gaming performance you can get.

Drivers were only needed because users were having trouble installing new versions of graphics drivers. Many users have gotten into the habit of running the driver cleaner every time they update their drivers — after uninstalling the previous version and before installing a new one — just so they don’t run into any problems after updating them.

Users who did not do so and encountered problems were required to uninstall their drivers, run a cleaner to wipe out all traces of the drivers, and reinstall the drivers.

So, do you need a cleaner for the driver? Only if you have updated your graphics and experienced crashes or other issues. If you’re like most users, you usually update your drivers when prompted and don’t notice any issues — or you can’t update your graphics drivers at all, which is great if you never play games on your PC.

Cleaning drivers is not for you unless you have a real problem after updating the driver. There’s no point in running a driver cleaner just in case — if you’re still used to uninstalling your drivers and running the driver cleaner every time you update them, stop using the driver cleaner and save yourself some time.

Using the driver

If you want to use a driver cleaner, you can download and use something like Driver3Weeper Guru3D. But don’t say we didn’t warn you — you probably don’t need to. The reason is that this program hasn’t been updated in years and doesn’t even officially support the final version of Windows 7. Given the lack of updates, we would recommend not running this outdated program in the first place.

One thing’s for sure — you don’t have to spend money downloading a driver cleaner. It won’t fix common PC problems or make your computer run faster, no matter what the websites say.

Driver cleaners are therefore largely a relic of the past. Sometimes they were needed in the past, but now we are at the point where you don’t need to run them.

Program for complete removal of ati drivers.

How to completely uninstall drivers for video cards NVIDIA, AMD and Intel

The computer is a receptacle for various interconnected devices, and for the correct interaction of the equipment, special software is required, namely, drivers. Thanks to this software, the full functionality of the device is achieved. Due to outdated, “flying”, crookedly installed or unsuitable drivers for equipment, failures are likely, the system may also not see components, as a result of which normal operation is impossible. Installing new software over the old one is not always successful, even if these are updates of the same drivers.

    TOP programs for uninstalling drivers.

In a good way, you must first complete the complete removal of unnecessary firewood, and then install new ones, this will help avoid software conflicts, and also prevent the accumulation of excess ballast. Old drivers leave «tails» behind them, which also need to be cleaned up after them. You can perform the removal using the regular means of the system, but here you need to be especially careful not to leave any traces of the software being removed. In addition, the standard procedure with built-in tools will not always be effective, because some files, empty folders or entries in the registry may remain, which will further interfere with the correct operation of the new software, which may affect the functioning of the entire system. To cleanly erase the remnants of old software, a driver removal program is used, which completely eliminates all connections with them.

You can remove unnecessary firewood, just like other software, in several ways. In the standard way, the procedure is carried out through the «Control Panel» in the «Programs and Features» section, where you can find the software that is no longer required in the list and uninstall it. But such actions are often ineffective, because they still leave traces. Another method involves manual removal through the Device Manager:

Windows 10, 8 or 7 systems have an integrated disk cleanup utility. To use it to remove drivers, you need to do the following:

Administrator rights are required to perform these steps. In addition, after removing old drivers by any of the methods, it is necessary to restart the computer. In practice, the use of the functionality built into the system often does not live up to expectations, leaving traces of the presence of old drivers. For a more thorough removal of software with all its «tails», you can use both native utilities from device developers and third-party products.

The procedure for removing drivers from the system is required for various purposes. This may be a replacement of equipment, incorrect operation of the installed software, or simply installing a new version cleanly. The remnants of some components of old drivers after a standard removal can provoke a conflict with the new software. To erase absolutely all memories of the past, it is better to use a driver removal program.

Regardless of what tools are used to get rid of unnecessary software ballast, it is recommended to create a system restore point before the procedure, which will help minimize the risks associated with a possible failure. There is no need to remove the driver if there is nothing to replace it with, since restoring the software can be problematic. Among the software solutions of various developers, there are those that are really worth paying attention to. There are both free and commercial versions of driver removal programs, but they are often not very expensive.

A program for the complete removal of video card drivers, eliminating, in addition to them, the rest of the software that usually comes with the kit. Display Driver Uninstaller is one of the best utilities that will help even if standard tools fail to complete the procedure, and when the most thorough elimination is required, the software will come in handy for the user when replacing equipment without reinstalling the system. The program is designed to remove AMD, Intel, NVIDIA + Physics drivers. System registry keys, files, directories and other items related to this software will disappear without a trace from the bowels of the system. With Display Driver Uninstaller, you can not only uninstall video card drivers, but also view information about the device, model, and ID number.

The program interface allows you to select a language, so you can immediately switch to Russian for convenience. Working with Display Driver Uninstaller is simple, in principle, the algorithm of actions when using this category of utilities is similar. After installing the software, it is recommended to boot the computer in safe mode, then the video driver is determined automatically (if the card manufacturer is displayed incorrectly, select manually from the list). Information about the video card can be seen in the log at the bottom of the program window. In the selection field, the name of the NVIDIA, AMD or Intel drivers to be removed should be indicated, when we have decided on this, we press the delete button (there are only three of them, we select the option to reboot the device or turn it off if the video adapter is to be replaced). After the procedure, there will be no trace left of the old drivers and their «tails». The product is regularly updated and supports Windows 10.

A free utility that performs not only the correct removal of video adapter drivers, as discussed above, but also other devices, including sound cards, USB ports, printers, etc. The Driver Sweeper product allows you to erase all traces of their presence in the system, getting rid of unnecessary junk in the registry, folders and other objects associated with the software being eliminated. Unfortunately, the application is no longer supported by the developer, for this reason it is becoming more and more obsolete, but at the same time it does not lose popularity among users.

Utility options allow you to change the interface language to Russian. When you go to the «Analysis and cleaning» section, a list of all detected driver manufacturers (sound, keyboard, usb, video cards NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, HP printer, Canon or other equipment) will appear. Here we put the checkboxes in front of the more unnecessary firewood and click the «Analysis» button, after which the program will find all related objects. Use the «Clean» button to delete files, confirming the action in the window that appears, then reboot the device.

Driver Sweeper also offers the option to back up older drivers before cleaning, so you can revert to them if needed. Another interesting option is to save the location of icons on the desktop, which is very convenient when replacing a video card driver.

This is a program to remove drivers and their leftovers, replacing Driver Sweeper. There are two versions of the program — free and paid with advanced functionality. Use this tool to remove Realtek, Marvell, NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, HP, ATi and other device drivers. Even with a limited set of options in the free version, you can effectively solve some problems, in any case, the utility finds the most popular device drivers. There is also the ability to save shortcuts on the desktop when removing video card drivers, a backup function, thanks to which you can return everything to its place, checking the relevance of drivers, customizable filters.

The interface is simple and convenient, there is an option to select a language, Russian is also available. To perform the uninstallation procedure using Driver Fusion, open the application and open the «Driver Cleaner» in the left interface block, where we select the device type and manufacturer, then click the «Clear» button and restart the computer. The premium version also provides the ability to delete protected files and registry keys. The Driver Fusion software product is updated by the developer and supports the latest versions of Windows.

The software is paid, but its cost is insignificant. The Driver Cleaner tool works with drivers for almost all modern computer devices, on any operating system. The product interface provides a choice of languages. There is also a very useful backup option that allows you to go back in case of failure.

After installing the program, it is better to update it immediately, the corresponding option is in the «Tools» menu, after which you need to restart the software. All actions in the application are performed by analogy with those discussed above, select drivers from the list (if you need to select several, check the box next to the “Several filters at the same time” item). If it is necessary to select individual files and registry keys after scanning, also check the box next to “Use Advanced cleaning”, then click the “Scan” button to start the analysis, and after it is completed, mark the detected elements, click the “Clean” button, then reboot.

In some cases, it is enough to use standard system tools, but it is better to use special software to control equipment, especially since no special skills are required to master it. Application cleanup processes are automated, so the risk of deleting something important is minimized, and the backup option will protect against the possibility that the deletion will not go well or the user will accidentally select the wrong driver for removal.

For modern Windows operating systems, it is often not necessary to install video card drivers separately, since they are already included in the system. This is especially true for users who do not want to install the numerous additional components that come with the driver.

If you are an avid gamer or just need some helper utilities, it is recommended to install updated NVIDIA, AMD or Intel drivers to get performance improvements, stability and new features.

Sometimes you may encounter problems after installing drivers. There is always a possibility that the new version may conflict with the installed game or some application using the driver will start to behave incorrectly.

This is why it may very often be necessary to completely remove the driver from the system. In most cases, removal by standard system tools helps, however, in some cases, the driver removal process may not complete or be interrupted due to a failure, the cause of which is difficult to fix on your own. To do this, you can use our separate instructions.

In these cases, the third-party Display Driver Uninstaller can be useful to uninstall NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel video card drivers. The program is compatible with all the latest versions of Windows. The developer suggests running the utility in safe mode, but this is an optional condition. The user is asked if they want to boot in safe mode or not. If you answer yes, then make sure to save the progress of all changes, because the computer will immediately begin to automatically restart.

The program can also enable/disable automatic driver updates via Windows Update. You will receive information about this when you start the program.

All the main functions of the program are displayed on one screen. At the top, the user can select the graphics driver to be removed. This function is useful when you change your video card and want to remove all driver components installed in the system.

Display Driver Uninstaller supports three operating modes:

    • Delete and reboot (highly recommended)
    • Uninstall without reboot (may cause black screen issue)
    • Uninstall and shut down (to install a new graphics card)

Several additional operations are also available: uninstall NVIDIA GeForce Experience and enable driver installation via Windows Update by default. In the «Options» window, you can enable the removal of 3DTV and Physx, as well as the removal of temporary folders C:\NVIDIA
    and C:\AMD
, which are used when installing drivers

Before choosing any of the options, make sure you have downloaded the graphics card driver package from the manufacturer’s website, you will need it after you have finished uninstalling the existing drivers.

If you select the Uninstall and Reboot option, you will notice that the system automatically reboots after a short uninstall period. If you don’t choose to automatically install the driver, Windows will use a generic video card driver that can run at a lower resolution.

    Note
: The source code for the Display Driver Uninstaller application is available for inspection on GitHub.

    Conclusion

Display Driver Uninstaller is a useful application for reliable and complete removal of drivers in cases where you encounter problems with their operation. The utility effectively performs its task, even if the driver does not work correctly or is not updated.

The program ensures that all traces of NVIDIA, AMD or Intel drivers are completely removed from the system.

    • booting the computer in safe mode;
    • Adding a utility to the exclusion column of any security software;
    • Internet shutdown to prevent auto-installation of remote drivers.

The official assembly of Display Driver Uninstaller does not require specific skills from the user, is easy to use and has multilingual support, including Russian.

To prevent possible usage problems, it is recommended to make a backup system restore point before starting to work with the program.

How to use Display Driver Uninstaller

After downloading, install the software to a convenient location on your hard drive. Display Driver Uninstaller is small in size, and thanks to its portability, it will not leave «traces» of work on the system. It is automatically updated, and for full operation you may need to install .NetFramework 2.0.

    1. Run the application and click the «Yes» button in the window that opens. This step is not required if the computer was originally started in safe mode. The latter is necessary for a more hassle-free uninstallation of drivers and services associated with them.
    2. We are waiting for the restart of the PC or laptop. In the Display Driver Uninstaller window that appears, we check with the automatically selected video card and install it manually if the program makes a mistake. You can see the installed video adapter model and other similar information right there in the window a little lower in the log.
    3. Decide on the deletion method. It is recommended to select the first item «Delete and restart». The second, «Delete without reboot» is fraught with errors and the appearance of a black screen for a while, but the third, «Delete and turn off», is useful when you subsequently physically replace the video card.
    4. We are waiting for the end of the utility. The program also maintains a detailed log that records all the actions it performs. You can view it using the corresponding tab in the upper part of the window.

It’s so easy to remove drivers from Nvidia and other developers using Display Driver Uninstaller, which can be downloaded in Russian from the link to the site below.

The free Driver Sweeper utility will help you completely remove unnecessary drivers or their remnants from the Windows operating system. At the same time, in case of system failures due to the removal of any driver, it will help to restore it in a matter of seconds.

It often happens that after installing new drivers into the system, it stops working normally. Especially often this happens to beginners who are just beginning to comprehend the basics of computer literacy. The reason for the failure of the system most often is the remaining traces after the removal of the drivers, or the conflict of its new version with the old one.

It is not at all easy to fix this situation by removing the remnants of drivers, especially if unofficial or very “ancient” versions of specialized software were installed. In addition, when changing a video card, for example, from NVIDIA to ATI, incompatibility problems may also arise, not only they can, but they will arise in 90% of cases. After replacing the graphics video adapter, you must install the appropriate drivers for it. If you do not remove the drivers, they will clog Windows, possibly conflict with it and slow down its work. The free Driver Sweeper uninstaller will help you solve this problem. It is about not, and about how to remove Windows drivers with it, we will talk today.

Complete removal of drivers using Driver Sweeper

The Driver Sweeper program is distributed by the developer absolutely free of charge. You can download the program for uninstalling drivers from our website using the link above, or from the official website of the utility, the address of which is indicated in the table. When installing the utility, please note that along with it it is proposed to download and install another program, it is paid, so if you do not need it, then refuse to download it. It is done like this: In the program installation wizard, carefully review each step and uncheck the checkbox “I accept the End User License Agreement and the Privacy Policy and want to install Mobogenie for free” in the necessary one.

After you download and install the program, you can proceed to remove the drivers from the system. By default, Driver Sweeper has an English interface language, so that it is more convenient to work with it, you need to change it to Russian. To do this, click in the “Options” section of the “Navigation” menu on the “Language” item and then select the Russian language in the drop-down list (see the figure below). Click the “Apply” button to localize the program interface.

To detect all the remnants of drivers previously installed in Windows, click on the link “Analysis and cleaning”, check the checkboxes of drivers by their developers. We recommend checking all checkboxes. Click the «Analyze» button.

The utility will find all specials. programs and their traces, and will list them in the next window. Check the ones you don’t need. If the program found a lot of garbage, and you decided to delete everything, then for the convenience of selection, click on the button with an asterisk located at the very bottom of the list and select the “All” item. To start the process of uninstalling drivers in Window, click on the “Cleanup” button.

The program will ask you a security question — “Are you sure you want to continue”, click on “Ok” in the dialog box that opens to confirm your intentions. After the utility completes the process of removing drivers from the system, you will need to restart the computer.

If after uninstalling the drivers and restarting the computer, Windows does not work properly, you can recover all deleted files. This is done simply. Launch Driver Sweeper again and in the Navigation menu, click on the Recovery item in the Tasks section. In the list of deleted files that the utility displays, select the ones you need and click on «Recover».

    That’s it. Good luck!
