With the crypto market experiencing volatility, gaming GPUs are easier to find and at more reasonable price points. 

While the Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards have established themselves as a sort of gold standard for gaming, AMD’s Radeon RX 6000 series cards, and even some older RTX 20 series models, are excellent, more affordable, alternatives. Both GeForce RTX and Radeon RX cards use raytracing technology to provide more realistic lighting and shadows as well as artificial intelligence for cleaner upscaling of non-UHD graphics. And while gaming GPUs are pretty much plug-and-play when it comes to compatibility and installation, you will see a small boost in performance if you match your card to the rest of your build: an AMD card will work much more efficiently with an AMD CPU as will an Nvidia model with an Intel processor. 

Just like CPUs, graphics cards can be overclocked to squeeze out higher frame rates or faster processing when dealing with graphically or technically intensive games, but most cards will have a base clock speed that is more than capable of handling just about any title.

As of September 2022, the long-running graphics card shortage has finally come to an end. Most AMD and Nvidia GPUs are now widely available and prices are back to pre-pandemic levels, more or less.

Also, Intel is about to enter the entry-level and mid-range markets, which is putting further pressure on prices.

On this page, we take a detailed look at the best graphics cards below $200 in 2022 based on actual gaming performance. This includes new entry-level cards as well as mid-range graphics cards that you might find on the used market around the same price point.

Unfortunately, none of the two major GPU manufacturers have been overly enthusiastic about the entry-level market in the past couple of years.

At the time of writing, Nvidia hasn’t released any new budget gaming GPUs since the GeForce GTX 1650 and 1650 Super in 2019. The recently announced GeForce GTX 1630 will do nothing to remedy the situation, as it is barely sufficient for AAA titles at 1080p. AMD has done marginally better by releasing the Radeon RX 6500 XT, although this card is also a disappointment for reasons we will go into below.

These cards are nevertheless what the current market has to offer for under $200 (or sometimes slightly above, depending on daily price moves).

From just looking at raw FP32 performance, the Radeon RX 6500 XT looks like the far more powerful GPU. However, in terms of actual gaming performance, it is only significantly faster than the GTX 1650 when using a PCI Express (PCIe) 4. 0 interface. In older PCIe 3.0 systems, the RX 6500 XT loses some of its performance, at which point it may be comparable to the GTX 1650 and slower than the 1650S.

Any of these GPUs can do 1080p gaming, but you will usually have to lower the settings to reach a consistent 60fps in more demanding titles. Here’s a quick look at relative GPU performance using Futuremark’s 3DMark Time Spy benchmark scores. We’ve included some additional GPUs for reference and will be discussing some of them below.

This is not an exact measurement of gaming performance, but still a reasonably accurate indicator of what to expect in games, on average.

Bottom line: The “performance/value” calculation changes daily along with GPU prices, which have not been very dependable lately. In spite of its shortcomings in PCIe 3.0 systems, however, the Radeon RX 6500 XT is currently the best GPU under $200 in relative terms.

Buy Now or Wait?

Throughout all of 2021 and early 2022, the graphics card market was in a really bad state, with severe shortages and inflated prices across all performance tiers. Even used cards from previous generations have been selling for more than their original MSRPs.

This all seems to be behind us now, as supply has improved and prices have dropped from previous peaks. And not only that – there is even talk of oversupply and markdowns. In other words, we are back in a buyer’s market. If you have been waiting for the right time to buy a budget graphics card, this may be it. 

In terms of release cycles, new entry-level cards from AMD and Nvidia based on upcoming architectures are likely several months away. Intel is however also getting ready to enter this market, which could shake things up.

This is good news, as the current budget GPUs are less than inspiring as far as price/performance goes. The AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT is a rather mediocre release that fails to surpass its predecessor, whereas Nvidia doesn’t even seem to bother with entry-level cards at this time.

Best GPU Below $200: Radeon RX 6500 XT

The Radeon RX 6500 XT may be the fastest GPU under $200 on the market right now, though this is mostly due to a lack of competition. Even in the best of circumstances, it fails to surpass its predecessor, the Radeon RX 5500 XT, but this is not the main issue.

What makes the RX 6500 XT problematic is that it requires a PCIe 4.0 interface to run at full speed. In a PCIe 3.0 system, it will not have enough bandwidth, resulting in a 5–20% performance drop depending on the game. Before buying this card, you should be aware of this weakness.

Systems that normally support PCIe 4.0 include those based on AMD’s Ryzen 3000 and 5000 series or Intel’s 11th-gen Core processors (or later).

That said, an RX 6500 XT-based graphics card does offer an acceptable price/performance mix in today’s market – at least for anyone with a Gen4 system looking for a budget GPU. Since the closest Nvidia competitors tend to be more expensive, it may even be the best option for Gen3 (not counting used cards).

Best Nvidia GPU Under $200 (MSRP): GTX 1650 (or 1650S)

Graphics cards based on the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU have once now mostly reverted to prices under $200. Even so, it is really the only Nvidia GPU to consider at this price point, since the alternatives are very old and will perform poorly in today’s AAA titles.

Like the RX 6500 XT, the GTX 1650 is bus-powered and requires no separate PCIe power connectors, which can be an advantage when upgrading e.g. OEM systems with a low-end power supply. This GPU is however older and considerably slower than an RX 6500 XT over a Gen4 interface but can be almost as fast over Gen3.

Compared to its predecessor, the GTX 1050 Ti, the GTX 1650 is around 30% faster and offers more than decent frame rates in the likes of Fortnite and CS:GO at 1080p. In more demanding single-player AAA titles you may need to lower the settings.

As prices are dropping, the significantly faster GTX 1650 Super can occasionally be found under $200, which makes it a far more interesting alternative to the non-Super variant. Note however that the 1650 Super requires a PCIe power connector, whereas the non-Super does not.

Some more recent 1650 boards are equipped with GDDR6 memory instead of GDDR5. This improves memory bandwidth and overall performance, but the clock rates have unfortunately been lowered to even out the difference. However, some testing indicates that GDDR6 boards are 5–10% faster, so this is a detail worth looking for.

Used AMD Radeon Cards: RX 5500 XT, RX 570/580/590

If you are looking for a decent graphics card on a budget, the used market may also be worth a look. Just be wary of cards that have been used for crypto mining, which is a greater risk for older mid-range cards with more than 4 GB of video memory (VRAM).

Used cards with AMD GPUs that may be of particular interest include:

  • Radeon RX 5500 XT & 5600 XT– As mentioned earlier, the RX 5500 XT is the 6500 XT’s predecessor. The older GPU is actually the better of the two since performance is about the same regardless of the interface used, as the RX 5500 XT has enough bandwidth over PCIe 3.0. Also, some cards with this GPU come with 8 GB VRAM (instead of 4 GB), which perform even better.
  • Radeon RX 570/580/590 – These cards are old and inefficient, but if you don’t mind a higher power consumption and have the PCIe power connectors to spare, the 580/590 in particular can offer performance on par with the more recent entry-level GPUs. They can often be found at attractive price points in the used market, but be aware that this generation of cards has been very popular among miners.

Used Nvidia GeForce Cards: GTX 1650S/1660/1660S

As opposed to the aforementioned AMD graphics cards, the 1650 and 1660 Super are still available in stores, but not for less than $200.

  • GTX 1650 Super – Compared to the non-Super GTX 1650, the 1650S is much faster and its performance is closer to the GTX 1660.  As opposed to the standard GTX 1650, the Super version requires one 6-pin PCIe power connector but draws much less power than equivalent cards from the previous generation.
  • GTX 1660 – The original GTX 1660 has now been superseded by the GTX 1650S and 1660S. It was intended as a direct successor to the GTX 1060 but is considerably faster (15-20%) and more efficient. Compared to the AMD alternatives, the GTX 1660 is also faster than the previous-gen RX 580 or even the RX 590 in actual games.
  • GTX 1660 Super/Ti – Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1660 Super is almost as fast as the GTX 1660 Ti. Compared to the non-Super, the 1660 Super is based on the same chip with an identical amount of shaders and transistors but it’s equipped with faster GDDR6 VRAM.

Summary

A lot has now changed for the better as far as price/performance goes in the entry-level market. For now, it’s mostly graphics cards based on the Radeon RX 6500 XT GPU that offer the best performance under $200 (with the right interface). The Nvidia GTX 1650, on the other hand, is quite old by now and can barely compete with AMD’s offering. If you can find a GTX 1650 Super under $200, this is a better alternative.

On the plus side, relatively speaking, is that none of these cards (except the 1650 Super) require external power. This is often an advantage when upgrading older pre-built systems, which tend to ship with low-end power supplies that lack separate power connectors for graphics cards. As long as the card fits in your case, you should be good to go.

When looking at the used market, AMD’s Radeon RX 5500 XT, as well as old RX 570/580/590 cards, may still offer good value depending on current prices.  Especially the RX 590 is an attractive option if you don’t mind the higher power consumption. As a consolation, it’s the latest and most efficient version of the now somewhat ancient Polaris GPU.  What that means is that you may need a bigger power supply unit (PSU) and sometimes an additional PCIe cable to power them. In the case of the RX 580 Nitro+, for example, you need one 8-pin and one 6-pin auxiliary (PCIe) power connector.

Factory Overclocking: Is it Worth It?

Another topic worth mentioning is factory overclocking. Most manufacturers bump the specs on their premium cards by raising the maximum GPU boost clock (and sometimes the VRAM speed), which also tends to be reflected in the price tag. These slightly higher clock rates do not have an impact on how much the card can be overclocked by the user. On the other hand, the larger coolers on more expensive cards are beneficial when overclocking.

Each GPU chip is unique quality-wise and therefore the chips’ overclocking capability varies. Unfortunately, you never know exactly how capable it is before you buy (hence it is called the “silicon lottery”). The main difference is that a factory-overclocked card is guaranteed to work at the specified clock rates, which is not the case otherwise. In some cases, pricier and factory-overclocked cards also have better cooling solutions than budget GPUs.

As for video memory (VRAM), more is always better, but entry-level cards will benefit less from large amounts of VRAM. Compared to 4 GB, an 8 GB card will (on average) improve frame rates by single-digit percentages, but may also allow for more details and higher resolutions (e.g. 1440p) with less significant performance drops. If the price difference is tiny, we definitely recommend an 8 GB variety.

About System and PSU Requirements

You need at least one of these to power faster cards than the GTX 1650S and RX 6500 XT.

You certainly don’t need a monster gaming rig to power budget graphics cards around the $200 price range. The most important thing is to ensure that your power supply unit (PSU) is up to the task.

The most demanding of the cards we’ve been looking at here are the older ones based on the Radeon RX 580 and RX 590 GPUs. AMD recommends a 500 Watt PSU for the entire system. This will, of course, depend on how power-efficient the rest of your system is. Typical board power is 185 Watts for the reference design RX 580, but overclocked cards will use a lot more.

Newer cards under $200 like the RX 6500 XT and GeForce GTX 1650 are far less demanding as they are both bus-powered – i.e. you don’t need a separate connector. Just install the card and it will be ready to run using power from the motherboard. The GeForce GTX 1650 Super does require a single 6-pin connector though.

Other than the PSU, your other PC components should preferably be at least fairly recent. The processor (CPU) does affect what frame rates you’ll be getting to some extent, but the difference will be quite small if you’re using any AMD Ryzen or Core i5 from the past few years. Older AMD CPUs in general and some older Intel Core i3 CPUs, in particular, may have a more severe negative effect on game frame rates.

If you already own a good mid-range CPU and want better gaming performance, upgrading to a faster GPU will yield more noticeable results compared to upgrading the CPU. Check our guide to the fastest GPUs below $300.

When coming across component page after component page on the internet, it’s easy to get burned out trying to decide which is the best graphics card to buy.

In this article, we’ll try and ease some of those decision-making pain points by helping you understand some of the features in NVIDIA graphics cards. Then you can make a more informed choice when you’re shopping for the best NVIDIA graphics cards for laptops and desktops to meet your PC gaming needs.

What is a GPU?

The graphics processing unit (GPU), which is also called the graphics card or video card, is a very important part of a gaming system. And for some graphics-intensive applications, it may be more important than the central processing unit (CPU), which is often referred to as the brain (or heart) of a computer.

The GPU performs rapid math calculations while freeing the CPU to perform other tasks. It speeds the process of creating and rendering images, animations, and video.

Two types of GPUs exist, integrated (or embedded) GPUs that reside on and share memory directly with the CPU, and discrete GPUs that have their own memory on their own card.

Types of GPU cores

Cores convey sets of instructions that enable software programs to perform specific functions and process data.

Processors like CPUs have both single and multiple cores, which are used for sequential processing. A GPU, on the other hand, was built for multi-tasking. It has hundreds or thousands of smaller cores that handle thousands of threads (also known as instructions) simultaneously.

1. CUDA cores

A leader in graphics card design, NVIDIA created CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture), which is a specialized programming language that uses the GPU to perform tasks faster and more efficiently. CUDA cores are the GPU’s equivalent of CPU cores. They’re parallel processors, with several thousand cores, that perform numerical calculations in fractions of seconds.

CUDA cores are responsible for handling all of the data that flows through the GPU, bringing it power and speed. Graphics settings that are affected the most by CUDA core counts are those that require the most from the GPU including lighting, shadows, special effects, complex simulations, virtual environments, and more.

2. Tensor cores

Built on NVIDIA’s Turing architecture (see below), tensor cores are designed for performing complex calculations, especially those within artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning applications, in a single operation — enabling massive increases in efficiency and throughput.

They’re used specifically for deep learning super-sampling (DLSS), NVIDIA’s proprietary technology that provides enhanced images without having to tap into a lot of the GPU’s key processing capabilities. DLSS forces games to render at lower resolutions while using AI to make it appear as if the images were rendered at higher resolutions.

It does this by using some anti-aliasing techniques. Anti-aliasing is the technology that removes edges or “jaggies” (what’s often referred to as the “staircase effect”) from video games. making them appear smoother.

3. Ray-tracing (RT) cores

Ray-tracing (RT) cores are designed to carry out ray-tracing techniques. Ray tracing is a rendering capability that realistically simulates a scene’s lighting and objects by rendering physically accurate and lifelike shadows, reflections, and more.

It forms an image by tracing the path of simulated light, creating levels of realism that are much better than those created using traditional rendering techniques. Because ray tracing is very computationally intensive, RT cores are designed to accelerate some of the most time-consuming components of ray-tracing calculations.

What about the architectures?

NVIDIA graphics cards such as the GTX series and RTX series are built on the Pascal and Turing architectures, respectively.

1. NVIDIA Pascal architecture

The NVIDIA Pascal architecture is one of the more powerful computer architectures ever built inside a GPU. It offers substantial improvements over older architectures in performance, power consumption, and heat generation.

The Pascal architecture delivers extraordinary performance of more than 5 teraflops for high-performance computing (HPC) workloads and a 7x increase in deep learning capabilities compared to previous-generation GPU architectures. [1]

2. NVIDIA Turing architecture

The NVIDIA Turning architecture is currently the world’s most advanced GPU architecture and the first GPU that’s capable of real-time ray tracing. It improves performance significantly more than previous generations (such as Pascal) with enhanced graphics capabilities and new programmable shading technologies. This enables fluid interactivity with large models and scenes, improved virtual reality (VR) experiences, more realistic details, and smoother rendering.

A multi-purpose GPU architecture, Turing combines multiple processor cores, including both tensor cores (for AI acceleration) and RT cores (for real-time ray tracing) performing real-time ray tracing, AI, and pixel processing simultaneously.

GeForce GTX 1060, 1070, and 1080 series graphics cards

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 Series graphics cards are some of the best NVIDIA GPUs, powered by the Pascal architecture to deliver up to 3 times the performance of previous-generation graphics cards. In addition, they offer innovative gaming technologies and enhanced VR experiences.

1. GeForce GTX 1060

The GeForce GTX 1060 takes advantage of the Pascal architecture to enhance speed and power efficiency. It has a base speed of 1,506 MHz and boosted speeds of 1,708 MHz, a memory bandwidth of 192 GB/s, and 1,280 CUDA cores.

The GTX 1060 will play most games at Full High-Definition (FHD) resolution (or 1920 x 1080 pixels, which is referred to as 1080p gaming) resolutions, as well as some in the Quad HD (QHD) resolution range, which is 2560 x 1440 pixels (also called 1440p). The GTX 1060 is a solid mid- to budget-range card, going for around $200 to $300.

2. GeForce GTX 1070

The GeForce GTX 1070 offers GDDR5 video memory of 8GB, a clock speed of 8 Gbps, and a 256 GB/s memory bandwidth. Like the GTX 1060, it has a base speed of 1,506 MHz, and boosted speeds of 1,683 MHz, but with more CUDA cores (1,920 in fact).

The GTX 1070 falls somewhere between high- and mid-end graphics card, retailing in the $400 price range, and is ideal for gaming at FHD resolutions. It also works well with games playing in QHD.

3. GeForce GTX 1080

An advanced gaming GPU, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 is one of the most powerful in the GTX 10 series. It features 2,560 NVIDIA CUDA cores, GDDR5X high-bandwidth video memory of 8GB and a memory speed of 10 Gbps, with a base speed of 1,607 MHz and boosted speeds of 1,733 MHz.

This card runs approximately 30% faster than the GTX 1070 and 1060 cards delivering breakthrough power, efficiency, and performance. The GTX 1080 is considered a high-end card running in the $500-plus price range and is perfect for gaming at QHD resolutions.

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, 2080, and 2070

The GeForce RTX series graphics cards are the first gaming GPUs based on the NVIDIA Turing architecture. The highly advanced Turning-based RTX series graphic cards run powerful AI algorithms in real time to create crisp images and lifelike shadows, refractions, reflections, and other advanced and special lighting effects that were not possible on previous architectures.

This GPU architecture is equipped with all the cores — CUDA, tensor, and RT — and it’s the first to support real-time ray tracing (RT). The real-time RT is carried out by the RT cores, and its performance is expressed in a new metric called Giga Rays per second (or GR/s).

Armed with GDDR6 memory (currently the world’s fastest), RTX series graphic cards let you play games on maximum settings with high frame rates which are usually those higher than 60 frames per second (fps).

The Turing architecture performs 6 times faster than Pascal for games using ray-traced graphics. NVIDIA claims that on existing games Turing will deliver 2 times the performance of Pascal, and 4K gaming at 60 fps, on even the most demanding triple-AAA (AAA) titles. [2]

Resolutions for 4K are Ultra High Definition (UHD) or 3840 x 2160 pixels — more than 8 million pixels. And 4K means that it offers 4 times the resolution of standard HD.

4. GeForce RTX 2080 Ti

Arguably the best premium GPU in the market today, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is truly revolutionary in terms of performance, speed, and realism. It has incredibly fast 14 Gbps memory speed and memory bandwidth of 616 GB/s as well as a huge amount of 11GB of GDDR6 memory.

While its base speed of 1,350 MHz and boost speed of 1,545 MHz are not all that high — and lower in fact than the GTX 1080 — it does have a whopping 4,352 CUDA cores, 544 tensor cores, and 68 RT cores speed along at 10 GR/s.

With the additional memory and CUDA cores, the RTX 2080 Ti is especially suited for high-performing, GPU-intensive 4K gaming. The RTX 2080 Ti can handle 10 GR/s and 78 trillion RTX-OPS (what NVIDIA refers to as the performance available when rendering next-generation games with hybrid graphics).

All of these features enable both ray tracing and DLSS in games that support it. And that’s the caveat: there are only a handful of games using ray tracing currently available.

The RTX 2080 Ti is definitely not cheap, though, as it runs well over $1,000 at the moment. But as a high-end card that’s packed with screamingly fast performance features and very cool cutting-edge graphics capabilities, it may just be worth your investment for soon-to-be-released and future gaming titles for years to come.

5. GeForce RTX 2080

The GeForce RTX 2080 is only a slight step down from the RTX 2080 Ti. While the RTX 2080 Ti performs approximately 20% faster at 4K than the RTX 2080, it still packs a punch with the same memory speed of 14 Gbps, and with faster base clock and boost speeds of, respectively, 1,515 MHz and 1,710 MHz.

It features 8GB of GDDR6 memory and a high memory bandwidth of 448 GB/s. It has 2,944 CUDA cores, 368 tensor cores, and 46 RT cores, an average of approximately 30% less than the RTX 2080 Ti.

Like the RTX 2080 Ti, the RTX 2080 will be able to handle most 4K games at 60 fps. According to NVIDIA, it’s capable of 60 trillion RTX-OPS and 8 GR/s. Considered a high- to high-mid-range card, the RTX 2080 retails in the $700 to $800 price range.

6. GeForce RTX 2070

The GeForce RTX 2070 is similar to the RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 2080 in terms of power, efficiency, and speed. Like its siblings, it has a 14 Gbps memory speed, along with 8GB of GDDR6 memory like the RTX 2080. Its base clock and boosted speeds of 1,410 MHz and 1,620 MHz aren’t that far removed from those of the RTX 2080 either.

It isn’t quite as powerful as its brethren, however, as it only offers 2304 CUDA cores, 288 tensor cores, and 36 RT cores — almost half of that of the RTX 2080 Ti. So, unlike the RTX 2080 Ti and 2080, it won’t be able to push the same boundaries of playability at many games’ highest settings.

But it will enable a decent 60 fps and, probably more importantly, the remarkable ray tracing graphics capabilities as the others in the RTX series.

The GeForce RTX 2070 is a powerful yet cost-effective alternative to both the RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 2080 in that at approximately $500, it only costs about half as much as the RTX 2080 Ti.

Understand your gaming requirements

Choosing the right graphics card for your gaming needs is highly subjective. Are you upgrading your gaming system or just parts of your system? Are you buying an entirely new gaming desktop or gaming monitor? Are you building a computer gaming system from scratch? Are you looking to play one specific game? Or do you want to be able to play a range of different types of games? Is your budget very restrictive, or is the sky the limit?

About the GTX 1650 OC Edition

This GTX model by ASUS features a two-fan cooling system, making the overall GPU smaller than any of its counterparts that we have reviewed in this article. It is actually a low-profile graphics card. In other words, it’s perfect for small to medium-sized gaming rigs that don’t have a whole lot of space to play with. But, even if you’re using a full-tower PC case, it won’t be a problem.

As for the actual specifications of this graphics card, it does have 4GB of GDDR6 VRAM with a memory clock of 1,785 MHz and bandwidth of 128GB/s, which is very reasonable considering the price of the GPU in the current state of the market. The manufacturers claim that the ultra-fast GDDR6 VRAM has over 50% more memory bandwidth than the typical 1650 GPU.

As for the base clock speed of this graphics card, it is 1,485 MHz, which is still very decent. What’s more about it is that since this model is an ASUS TUF variant, it has been tested for complete TUF gaming compatibility.

What Performance to Expect

Despite the fact that this GPU was once great during its prime, it is now a few generations old, meaning you can’t expect to get a level of performance equivalent to what the 30 or even 20 series can deliver.

For reference, you can expect to get around 44 FPS at 1080p when playing games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. If you want to play 1440p, that FPS will drop to around 25, which is far from ideal.

But, if you’re someone who enjoys playing less graphically demanding games in the likes of Battlefield V and R6 Siege, you can easily get between 80 and 150 FPS at 1080p.

In other words, if you want to play 1440p or higher, this GPU isn’t sufficient enough to provide you with a sufficient level of performance no matter the game at hand.

What Performance to Expect

After running some tests, we can confidently say that for the price that the 3070 currently goes for, you get a lot. In order to give you a bit of a perspective as to what you can expect from this GPU, we tested it across a number of games and the average FPS at 1080p was 164.

For 1440p, the average FPS for those same games was 128, and in 4K, the FPS was 76 on average. What’s impressive is that on some games like Civilization VI, the FPS went as high as 120, which is awesome.

One thing is for sure, with this GPU, you can play any game at any resolution you want – and that’s without even overclocking it. Do note that you’ll need a good gaming case to go with this GPU as it produces quite a fair amount of heat when put to its limit.

What Performance to Expect

As far as performance is concerned, using this GPU, when playing Battlefield V at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, you can expect an average FPS of 205, 189, and 128 respectively. This is quite average in terms of what you can expect as Battlefield V is neither the least nor the most demanding video game in terms of graphics.

On the super low end, games like Anno 1800 really do put this video card to the test as at 1080p, you can barely get over 65 FPS. What’s surprising is that even at 1440p or 4K, the level of performance doesn’t really change much.

These days, 4K gaming is very much possible. It is all thanks to the new graphics cards released in the market that are fully capable of driving games at very high resolution. 4K gaming was somewhat not feasible before, or at least getting the smoothest experience with an older generation of graphics card was tricky. You will have to adjust the graphics settings and sacrifice the quality just to get near 60fps. In this article, we recommend six graphics cards for 4K gaming; three from NVIDIA and three from AMD. These graphics cards can push games at 4K even at maximum graphics quality. Best 4K Graphics Cards for Gaming

For this current generation, I can comfortably recommend six graphics cards, three from NVIDIA and three from AMD. All graphics cards can drive games at 4K UHD resolution, 3840×2160, with at least 60fps at maximum graphics settings. Of course, with some (really) graphics-intensive games, you might need to use DLSS (NVIDIA) or FSR (AMD).

I have tested three of these graphics cards. Below are some benchmark results to give you an idea of what kind of numbers these GPUs offer. Unfortunately, I do not have the other three cards to share with you some results. Although I haven’t tested the other GPUs, I’m confident that they are capable of driving games at 4K.

Based on the results I got, you need at least a GeForce RTX 3080 or its AMD counterpart, the RX 6800 XT, to enjoy playing games at 4K resolution and maintain at least an average of 60 fps. There are some graphics-intensive games, like Cyberpunk 2077, where you may need to enable DLSS and/or lower some of the graphics settings to enjoy the game at smooth 60 fps or more.

Of course, some games are not as graphics-intensive as Cyberpunk 2077, and you may not need a powerful graphics card to drive them at 4K UHD. Another solution, aside from adjusting the graphics quality, is to use DLSS or FSR if the game supports it.

But if you want to play games at native 4K, or with ray tracing enabled, or perhaps you own a 4K 120Hz or 4K 144Hz monitor and you want to take advantage of the high refresh rate, then you need a powerful graphics card to push those frame rates higher.

Best NVIDIA Graphics Card for 4K Gaming

If you want an NVIDIA graphics card, since they are the better solution when it comes to ray tracing, and NVIDIA’s DLSS is more mature compared to AMD’s, I recommend the RTX 3090 Ti, RTX 3080 Ti, and RTX 3080.

The RTX 3090 Ti is currently NVIDIA’s flagship GPU. It is the fastest they have. It rocks 10752 CUDA cores and 24GB of VRAM. Next is the RTX 3080 Ti, with 10240 CUDA cores and 12GB of VRAM. Finally, the RTX 3080 features 8704 CUDA cores and 10GB of VRAM. Note that there is also a 12GB variant of the RTX 3080. Although, based on reviews, the difference in performance between the 10GB and 12GB is very minimal.

I intentionally skipped the RTX 3090 because its performance is very close to the RTX 3080 Ti in gaming. Its only advantage is the 24GB of VRAM, which is useful for non-gaming workloads. In my opinion, the RTX 3090 Ti is a much better option than the RTX 3090, especially today when the prices of the RTX 3090 Ti have significantly dropped.

Generally, I recommend EVGA’s FTW Ultra, MSI’s SUPRIM X or Gaming X Trio, or Asus ROG Strix or TUF. These are some of the best graphics card models on the market. Best AMD Graphics Card for 4K Gaming

AMD graphics cards are not as good in ray tracing compared to NVIDIA. They are, in fact, a generation behind in ray tracing. Meanwhile, AMD’s FSR is getting better and closer to NVIDIA’s DLSS. It won’t be long until AMD’s FSR will be on the same level as NVIDIA’s DLSS.

However, AMD has an advantage when it comes to price/performance. Or generally speaking, AMD’s graphics cards are cheaper compared to NVIDIA’s. The RTX 3090 Ti currently retails for around $1,500. Meanwhile, AMD’s flagship RX 6950 XT retails for around $1,100. And the RX 6900 XT is even cheaper.

Again, I haven’t tested the RX 6950 XT and RX 6800 XT. But the RX 6800 XT performs on par or slightly better than the RTX 3080, depending on the game title. And the RX 6950 XT trade blows with the RTX 3090 Ti.

So, again, when deciding which AMD graphics card to get, it falls to personal preference and price. But generally, I would go for the top brand models, like MSI, Asus, Sapphire, or PowerColor’s RX 6000 cards.     What is the best graphics card for FPS Esports?

    Currently 99.24 percent FPS per player is played with an NVIDIA graphics card. The most popular model is NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti with 20%. Top models like the RTX 3080 or 3090 account for 9.78%. Only 0.76% of professional gamers use AMD graphics cards.

    Let’s dive into the results. As I said, we are only objectively presenting the results of 1320 ranked professional players. In total, we analyzed the data of more than 1700 professional gamers, but the video card score came up with only 77.64%.

    Currently, the majority of professional gamers surveyed (20% percent) use the NVIDIA RTX 2080 Ti model and therefore the powerful model with the maximum possible 11 GB VRAM.

    We know that sponsorship always plays an important role in games with a competitive esports scene. For example, if AMD is the main sponsor of the CSGO League, then more professionals will play with AMD video cards, because, on the one hand, the team sponsor wants this. But on the other hand, hardware provided at offline events such as league finals also comes from AMD.

    Regardless, you can assume that esports organizations and teams are always looking to compete with the best equipment so as not to be at a disadvantage compared to the competition. CSGO also has teams that do not use AMD graphics cards, or teams with completely mixed graphics cards from AMD and NVIDIA. Thus, there can be no question of sponsorship restrictions.

Also, if you have the same equipment as the pros, you can copy their settings and profit from them.

    No video card will get five stars on Amazon, but that’s okay. Damage in transit, manufacturing errors, and inconsistent estimates (such as delivery time instead of product quality) reduce the reliability of the estimate.
