First-Class Mail is an affordable service that does not include end-to-end tracking. However, you can pay for the extra service of tracking information. In the case of international mail, tracking is included with many, but not all, international mailing services. Some destinations have restrictions on tracking.

How to find your USPS tracking number

To track your package, you’ll need the USPS tracking number. There are several places you can find your number, depending on how you paid for or sent the mail:

  • The shipping or sales receipt you received at the post office when you sent the item, or from an online retailer.
  • The sales receipt or e-receipt from a USPS self-serve kiosk.
  • The online label record if you purchased the item through Click-N-Ship.
  • The receipt for insurance, if you chose to purchase some.
  • An email confirmation if you shipped using USPS.com.
  • The bottom portion of the USPS tracking label, which peels off.

Postcards, and items sent by First-Class mail or USPS Marketing Mail may not have a tracking number. In those instances, if you want to track the package, you have to add the extra service of tracking, or mail it with a different service.  

The important thing to remember is that you need the tracking number, so save your information. If you don’t have a receipt, you should have an electronic copy of the number on your USPS account. USPS online service agents and those at the Post Offices can’t recover lost tracking numbers.

What does your USPS tracking number look like? 

Although international tracking numbers are different, most of the numbers look like this:

If you’ve forgotten how you sent the item, or want to see the expected delivery, you can enter the USPS Tracking number and look up «Product Information.» This gives you the type of mail class you chose, and the progress of your package. If your item has a status of «Alert,» a delay could have occurred because of weather or other natural disaster or event. 

What if you lost your USPS tracking number? You won’t have much success tracking your package without a number, unless you set up an Informed Delivery account.

How to track a USPS package without tracking number 

Since you need a number to track a package, and USPS agents can’t help you recover a tracking number, you’re out of luck if you lose it. If the package doesn’t arrive, you can file a Missing Mail search request. To do that, you need the mailer’s address and the recipient’s address, the date of mailing, and a description of the package.

  1. Set up a USPS account.

  3. Enter your address to determine if it is eligible for Informed Delivery.
    If your address is eligible, login to your usps.com account and select “Informed Delivery” in the top right of your profile page.
  4. Select “Enroll” and scroll down to the Informed Delivery box under “Account Management.” 
  5. Select the appropriate boxes to agree to the terms and conditions and certify your address, then select “Enroll in Informed Delivery” to continue.
  6. Complete the identity verification questions, if you didn’t when setting up your account.

Then you’ll be able to:

  • Track packages. Use informed delivery to check the delivery status of packages, including when they’re scheduled to arrive.
  • Check on incoming mail and packages on the secure, online dashboard.
  • View grayscale images of the exterior, address side of letter-sized mail that is scheduled to arrive.
  • Leave delivery instructions if you won’t be home to accept a package.
  • Schedule a package to be redelivered if you missed a delivery.
  • Set up email and/or text notifications to track the delivery status of your packages.

If you’re the person waiting for the mail, and you don’t have a tracking number, then ask the person who sent the mail to provide you with the number. That will allow you to track the package until it arrives at your home.

How to send a package from USPS

By now you know that the United States Postal Service ( USPS ) is a fantastic way to ship your packages. Here are some tips on how they work:

  1. Choose the box, making sure your item will fit safely. A standard size helps avoid fees due to packages that can’t run through the USPS machines. 
  2. Tape the box closed and ensure it is flat on all sides. Reinforce the closed flaps with packing tape.
  3. Print the shipping label or write the addresses with a permanent marker. The delivery address is written in the center of the package and your (return) address goes in the top left corner.

Has the USPS changed international services on its parcels?

The USPS has made some changes to the names of international service options recently which should be noted by customers looking to use USPS services.

How can I know what format the tracking number has?

This is how the system works: your parcel, like every other parcel, has a unique barcode. The tracking number consists of letters and numbers, usually from 8-40 characters. After finding the tracking number, you can copy-paste it to the tracking tool of the courier company you have the shipment booked with. If you have selected the correct tracking number, your shipment will be located within seconds. If you see in the tracking status that the shipment has not moved for some time now, it could be because it is either stuck in transit or stuck in customs.

Why is the tracking number for my shipment missing?

The tracking number serves the purpose of showing the status of the parcel, meaning, to see if the parcel is on its way, in transit, or maybe even stuck in customs. Therefore, if you do not have the tracking number, you will not be able to check the status of the parcel.

If you have lost your tracking number, you won’t be able to track your USPS parcel. This number is crucial to making the system work, and without it, you will be unable to track the parcel. This prevents you from knowing when it will be delivered, or if it has got lost en route.

 

 

What Is The Tracking Number?

 

The tracking number is a string of numbers that you will be given when you send a parcel via a tracked service with USPS. You can type this number into the tracking service on USPS’s website and it will display your parcel’s journey information and delivery estimates.

 

You can do this as many times as you want while the parcel travels, and it will show you updated information as it moves through the different stages, up to delivery. If a postal worker misses scanning it, it may jump a couple of steps, but this is still the most accurate way to track where your parcel is at any given time.

 

 

Where Do I Find My Tracking Number?

 

Your tracking number should usually be displayed upon the receipt you are given when you hand the parcel to USPS. You should also receive a confirmation email with the tracking number written on it.

 

You may also be able to locate the number on the online label record, if you paid for your postage online, or on the barcode that is placed on the item to be mailed (although you probably will not have this anymore).

 

Check all of these places. It is also a good idea to write down a tracking number when you are given it, so that you have a secondary copy. Often, an email is the safest way to receive your tracking number if you are given a choice about this.

 

Your tracking number is only generated at the point when you make an order with USPS. You cannot generate a tracking number prior to this; it is given to you when you pay to ship an item with the company.

 

How Do I Use A Tracking Number?

If you have purchased something, you may also be able to see the tracking number on the website you purchased from. It is usually under “order information” or alongside the notification that your package has been sent. However, not all websites encourage sellers to upload this information.

 

If it isn’t on the site, your will need to request it directly from the seller. USPS cannot give you the tracking information, because they don’t store it, so the seller is the only person who can help.

 

Alternatively, if you are a current Informed Delivery subscriber with USPS, go to your online dashboard. This should provide you with the tracking number.

 

What Happens If I Lose My Tracking Number?

 

It’s important to keep your tracking number somewhere very safe. Once lost, it cannot be recovered, because you are the only person who has access to the number.

 

As mentioned, USPS does not store the tracking information, and they will not be able to help you recover it or generate any further information about it whatsoever. It is up to you to keep this information safe.

 

This is partly why it is sent via email, as well as printed on the receipt. This ensures that you have a copy that should be easy to access at all times, and recoverable even if you move it to the “Deleted” folder (with most mail providers).

 

It is best not to delete this email until the parcel has been safely received by the recipient, as they may need the tracking information.

 

If the parcel gets lost or delayed, this tracking information will be a crucial aspect of finding out where it is and potentially recovering it. Without the tracking number, you have no way of locating your item, and therefore no way of telling if it has got lost – and where it was last logged in the system if it has.

 

 

Can USPS Look Up My Parcel With Other Information?

 

USPS has lots of other information about your parcel, such as the sending date, the recipient’s address, the sender’s address, etc. You might be wondering if they can use this information to look up your parcel and find out where it is.

 

Unfortunately, the answer is that they can’t. Your tracking number is what is associated with the parcel, not the other information. This makes sense if you think about it, because it is a unique number and there is no risk of getting it mixed up.

 

If USPS tried to look up your parcel by recipient address, they might find information about other parcels that are being sent to them, rather than yours. If they tried to look up the parcel by sender address, they might get other parcels that you have sent out. They keep things simple, and only use tracking numbers.

 

This system does seem rather outdated; by now, it seems USPS ought to be able to locate parcels via other information. However, given the size of the USA and the extensive nature of USPS’s postal network, this would involve unthinkable amounts of work.

 

What Steps Should I Follow?

 

You have probably already looked for your receipt and/or email, but these remain your only options, so it’s worth following the steps below.

 

  1. Look for the receipt you were given when you mailed the parcel. This would have been handed to you by the shipping clerk. Check your wallet, purse, car, or any grocery bags you were carrying that day.
  2. Check whether you have the insurance slip (if your mail was worth more than $50). This slip should be given to you at the same time as the normal receipt, and it will also have the USPS tracking information printed on it.
  3. Check your Inbox and your Junk folders for your email from USPS. Try looking in the Deleted folder, or use your email’s search function to look for “USPS,” “tracking,” “dispatched,” or other key phrases.
  4. If you are a buyer, and you purchased from an online store, check whether their confirmation/dispatch email contains a tracking number.
  5. If you are a buyer and you can’t find this information, contact the person you purchased the item from. They should still have the tracking information and can send it to you again.
  6. Try contacting USPS. It is unlikely that they can help at this stage, but you have nothing to lose by trying.
  7. If you are the sender, ask your recipient if they are an Informed Delivery subscriber. They must have an active subscription for this to work, but if they do, they should have the tracking number on their dashboard. While a long shot, this may solve the issue!
  8. Wait for the parcel to be delivered. If all else fails, this is your only choice! That’s why it is important to hang onto your tracking information.

 

I Still Lost My Tracking Number; What Should I Do?

 

So, if you have managed to misplace both your receipt and your confirmation email, what are your options?

 

Unfortunately, you do not have any options besides looking for one, the other, or both of these documents, or simply waiting for the parcel to be delivered. There is no other way to access USPS’s online tracking system, or to generate the tracking number again. If USPS customer service cannot help, all you can do at this point is to wait for your parcel to be delivered.

 

That’s why it is very important to keep your tracking number in a safe place. You could make a folder in your email program for tracking numbers if you regularly mail parcels. Create a safe spot in your home for the physical receipts, and consider taking a picture of each one on your phone as a secondary copy.

 

Hopefully, this will help to ensure that you never lose a tracking number. If you do, don’t panic; your parcel will probably still be delivered just fine. All you have to do is wait.

 

Do I Need A Tracking Number To Report Mail As Lost?

 

If the mail unfortunately does get lost en route and you have lost the tracking number, you might be wondering what you can do and whether this means the mail is lost for good.

 

Fortunately, no! Technically, you do not need the tracking number in order to inform USPS that mail has gone missing, although it is a recommended piece of information to include if you can. When submitting a Missing Mail request, you will be asked for:

 

  • The date of mailing
  • The recipient address
  • The sender address
  • What the parcel looked like
  • A description of the contents (preferably with a photo)
  • The tracking number if available

 

If you do not have the tracking number, you can still file a Missing Mail request, and USPS will do what they can to locate the parcel. However, it is harder for them without a tracking number.

 

You will need to wait for seven days after the last estimated delivery date before you can file this request, so it’s a good idea to keep this information safe (because without the tracking information, you won’t be able to access it online).

 

If you do not have access to this information anymore, simply wait a few days and attempt to file a request. If USPS rejects it, you may have filed too soon. Wait another few days and try again. If it is again rejected, it may be time to contact the company and request some assistance.

 

Does All Mail Have A Tracking Number?

 

Not all mail will have a tracking number, no. Items that do not include a tracking number are those such as:

 

  • Periodicals
  • Postcards
  • Certain Marketing Mail parcels
  • Letters (although tracking can be added at an extra cost)

    On arrival in Norway, we apply a unique tracking chip so that you can track the shipment from arrival in Norway until delivery to the mailbox.

    Norgespakke™ and Pick-up parcel usually uses 2–5 business days depending on the distance.
    Business Parcel, Parcel to the door uses 1–4 business days depending on the distance.
    Express next day. Shipping time for most places is 1 day. These packages are sent by air over longer distances.

  • Last status in tracking is the last registered. Between our terminals there is no update in the tracking solution. Some distances takes 1–4 days depending on the transport method.

    When your shipment has arrived at the terminal, it is normally forwarded to the pick-up point the same day or it is available at your pick-up point the day after. Way of delivery depends on type of shipment and transport method.

  • If your business supplier has been given your mobile number and/or e-mail address, you can be notified by SMS or e-mail on some package products that the package has arrived at the pick-up office.

    You will then not get any message in the mailbox. It will normally be sent a notice on day 1, day 3 and day 11 if the package has not been retrieved.

    Packages that are sent to you by other than business suppliers, will not be given e-mail notice. Retrieving message will then appear in the mailbox.

  • If you have a tracking number on a consignment, you can track most shipments. Tracking for shipments abroad gives some limited tracking information. This is related to the mode of transport and the destination country’s tracking system

    Packages can be traced in most countries in Europe as well as some other countries.

    Registered letters to foreign countries have limited tracking. Here you can follow the consignment from submission until it leaves Norway. The shipment is still transported and is sent to the recipient’s address.

  • No tracking information is provided when a shipment is en route and transported between our terminals. It may take 1-4 days depending on the route and mode of transport.

    Should the parcel be executed by car, it will normally run on the day it is registered arriving at the terminal.

    Should the package be delivered from a pick-up point, it will be available there the next day after arriving at the terminal.

    There may also be packages where we will contact the recipient for delivery agreement.

    Delivery method depends on the type of shipping and transport method.

  • If you have provided your mobile number or e-mail address to the sender, your supplier may choose whether to notify you when the shipment is en route or ready for dispatch. How many times you get notified depends on which service the sender has chosen.

  • If you have received a notification that is not for you, we may have received the wrong mobile number or email address from the sender. As you can get more alerts for the same sending, please contact us so we can stop further alerts.

Q&A about pick up

  • Packages are available at your local pick-up office, which is either a post office or Post in Store. The tracking will usually show which pick up place the package is on.
    If you get a retrieval without a specified pick up place, you can find this by using your address under the Posten address search..

    Our mail terminals sorts and reload the packages and are not pick-up point for packages. Packages in category 3 are sorted all day and run collectively to the pick-up offices the next day no matter what time the package is sorted at the terminal.

  • There is different delivery times on our shipments.

  • No. Our terminals are not pick-up point for letters or packages. Only sorting and reloading takes place here.

    Is your package registered as arrived at the terminal, it will normally be delivered the same day or be available at your pick up office the next day. Delivery method depends on the type of shipping and transport method.

  • The deadline for picking up packages and other shipments at post offices is 14 days. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate requests for extended deadline.

    Sender owns the consignment until it is delivered and is entitled to return it if it is not retrieved within 14 days. Post offices also need the space for other packages and letters that are constantly arriving.

  • Others may collect packages for you if the sender has not requested legitimized delivery.

    Shipments that must be collected by you personally will appear on the retrieval notification. In addition, some consignments as registered letters may be obtained with mandates and original credentials for both the recipient and the person who retrieves.

    Post offices may refuse other than recipients to collect packages if they are in doubt if you are the right person or have the right to retrieve the package on behalf of the addressee.

The number assigned to domestic shipments consists of numbers. International identifier (according to the standard
S10 )
contains 13 characters and has the following structure:

R/C/E — indicate the type of departure;

X — letters from A to Z, for the uniqueness of the code;

123456781 — a combination of numbers for the uniqueness of the code;

CN – code-identifier of the country of origin according to the S10 UPU standard (in this case, China).

If the shipment is handled by commercial express carriers (UPS, DHL, etc.), then the structure of the track number may differ from
international
standard.

For example, DHL Global Mail has the following structure: GM 12345678

5678, where GM — type of delivery, 17 digits —
unique

It is by this number that you can track the parcel while it is inside the sending country. After export, the transfer is assigned
international
code in the format S10 for further tracking.

How can I find out the shipment number?

The track number of the postal item will be indicated on the receipt (check) issued by the postal service. If the purchase was made in
online store, the number will appear in your account on the order page.

Do not confuse the order number and tracking number: the first is assigned immediately after the purchase, and the second only after
