Hardwareluxx Modding Contest 2021: a review of finished projects

Since mid-November, the participants of the Hardwareluxx modding competition, selected by the jury, began to collect their projects. All five participants received the MSI case and accessories, after which they began the process. Of course, after modding, the projects of the participants will no longer resemble the original components. This year, five projects turned out to be very different, from a wooden computer to rusty sheets of iron, stylized as a famous computer game.

The participants of the contest put a lot of effort into implementing the most ambitious ideas in their projects. Each member kept a work journal which allowed for feedback from other modders. Today all projects are ready, in a few days they will appear before the jury.

«富士山» project — ivory2k14

«ivory2k14» focused on the Japanese theme, inspired by both Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms. White and black were chosen as the base colors, the project is decorated with hieroglyphs, symbols and drawings, including cherry blossom branches, a red sun and the slopes of Fujiyama. The modder chose an open case, in which the circuit of a self-assembly CBO is installed. Of course, components are also painted in the Japanese style, first of all, this concerns the video card. All cables are beautifully braided.

«Eternals“ — i2r

«i2r» dedicated his mod to the Marvel series, namely the film «Eternals». The black body is covered with appropriate ornaments and lines of the power of space. The modder experimented with aluminum wire to get circles. On the front panel The body was laser engraved and sanded and then painted, inside you can see the golden Marvel logo, all components were also painted in the same style. are also wrapped in a beautiful braid in the same style.0003

«glory to mankind» — karta03

«karta03» chose wood as the material, inspired by Square Enix’s NieR series, especially the scene from Emil’s memories. The modder cut out the wood panels and sheathed the body with them. Only the side panel and back panel resemble the original MSI product. The case is mounted on brass legs, a separate block is provided for the cooling system with a large 1. 080 mm radiator, which the modder made himself. Inside the case, steel panels are covered with artificial leather. «karta03» also worked on the keyboard, which also matches NieR’s play style.

«Abandoned reactor» — Pipoi

«Pipoi» chose the image of a nuclear reactor. His mod is supposed to resemble an abandoned nuclear reactor, damaged in some places. The side panel of the case contains a sign of radiation danger, which is cut out of steel and decorated with a yellow acrylic backing, after which it is illuminated with ultraviolet light. The entire body has been machined to remove the black paint. However, the paint didn’t come off easily, so the modder just decided to burn it out. 3D printing was used for the heat spreaders of the memory modules and the back plate of the video card. A toxic green liquid was poured into the water cooling circuit. Moreover, the tank is equipped with a drive that allows it to automatically rise to the cover of the housing.

«Fallout Bullet Time» — MudzieModz

Forum member «mudziemodz» was inspired by his favorite Fallout 4 game and a bottle of quantum Nuka-Cola frozen in flight. Here the modder is referring to V.A.T.S. technology slowing down time in order to better aim. Of course, the hull was specially treated to show signs of rust and fire. Not without the classic baseball bat. The modder kept the Fallout color palette, so you can see yellow and blue accents, as well as an abundance of rust. The components and body were disassembled and then painted with an airbrush and acrylics. On the lid, the modder installed three tanks resembling a nuclear reactor, the liquid also received a poisonous green color.

The jury will choose the winner in the coming days. All projects this year are worthy, so it will not be easy. Projects will be evaluated according to DCMM rules.
