I have a D102ggc2 motherboard with socket 775 and my neighbour has a Biostar socket 775 motherboard.
He has a Core 2 Duo processor with 2.93 GHz and I have a Pentium 4 with 3.06 GHz. I wanted to change my processor and I checked the Intel website – but for my motherboard, the only supported processors were Celeron, Pentium D and Pentium 4.
How come socket 775 supports Core 2 Duo?
If I upgraded my processor to a Core 2 Duo, would it cause any problems with my DDR2 RAM, motherboard or any other component of my PC?

Core 2 required a voltage regulator on the motherboard that was not needed for the Pentium D line of processors, all early 775 socket motherboards do not have this VR, which includes your Intel mobo, so no it will not work.

Short answer is No, your motherboard does not support Core 2 Duo.
Long answer is that since Intel used this socket for a long time, you’ll have to check with what your motherboard says it supports. Newer motherboards with the same socket, came out around the time the newer CPU’s with the same socket arrived.
From CPU World:
All LGA775 CPU’s will physically fit into the socket LGA775, but not all of them are supported by all motherboards. If you’re upgrading an old computer system please make sure that the CPU is compatible with your motherboard.

I have installed duo core processors up to 2.6 GHz 800 MHz FSB on these older M.B. . I was told by everyone they would not work but I installed on a lark and they worked and performed perfectly. In dells and Some HP s . HP bios seemed to limit success on some. But I have installed 2 core duo processors on M.B. s with the orig bios and in spite of everything I was told on the support sites. They worked fine. this surprised me I have only run across a few HP s that the duo core did not work on ! The MB s would support up to 800 MHz 2.6 90% of the time. Above that not so much in the real old desktops. With LGA 775 socket.

Features Socket LGA 775 CPU
April 29th, 2014 Danil
Socket 775 is a processor, or central processing unit, that is supported by a processor socket known as LGA 775, or Socket T. It is a component that a semiconductor manufacturing company components Intel Corporation, introduced in 2004 for some members of its brands Pentium, Core, Celeron, Xeon. The prefix of the LGA socket is an abbreviation for land grid array. This characterizes it in a grid, like a processor layout, supporting pins that are made like pins instead of the holes that were common earlier. nine00005 Socket 775 CPU was considered the most common LGA socket is a supported processor, not only because LGA 775 has general popularity, but also because it supports a wide range of processors.
LGA 775 is named after the number of pins it has. They are gold-plated and form a 1.29-1.18-inch (33-by-30 millimeter) grid on a 1.48-inch (37.6 mm) square shaped substrate 0.6-by-0.55-inch (15-14 mm). nine0006 Socket LGA 775 uses a variant of LGA called «flip-chip (land grid array (FCLGA)», which means that the processor is flipped on its side so that it lies on its back, thus allowing users to place a heatsink on it for socket LGA 775 can be installed with virtually any processor that supports baud rates of 533, 800, 1.066, 1.333, and 1600 megahertz (MHz).0003
The first socket 775 CPU brand Intel Pentium 4, which was the fourth iteration of Intel then came the flagship chip of the computer family. In this regard, socket LGA 775 replaced Socket 478; the latter debuted in 2000 with the Pentium 4. The processing speed range of the first batch of Socket 775 -compatible chips is 2.66 to 3.8 GHz. Compatibility has also been expanded to the higher performing but less power efficient Pentium D and its top-tier Extreme Edition sub-category, which combine the more expansive 2.66-3.73 GHz processing speed ranges. nine0003
Also included in Socket 775 CPU family brand Core 2, which has overtaken the flagship brand Intel Pentium. 2 Quad and they are targeted at 2.6-3.2 GHz Core 2 Extreme. Intel, however, still made Pentium processors for Socket 775 . The processing range of compatible processors of the Intel Pentium Dual-Core brand, which were manufactured from 2006 to 2009, is 1.6-3.06 GHz. In the Extreme Edition production generation, which continued until 2008, it has a range of 3. 2-3.73 GHz. nine0003
In addition, the Intel Pentium and Core 2 brands include some low-budget chips and the Celeron workstation- and server-oriented Xeon family Socket 775 CPU .Celeron, consisting of the 400 series, D, and dual-core, covers a processing range of 1.6-3.6 GHz. Xeon 3000 series, has a range of 1.86-3.16 GHz, and includes Xeon chips compatible with Socket 775 .

LGA 775 gaming PC — still relevant?
Computers based on the LGA 775 are still relevant, although almost 12 years have passed since the appearance of the platform. But does it make sense to build a budget system unit for work and games on this socket in 2018?
It is worth mentioning right away that a computer on socket 775 is the minimum possible option that can be purchased now for comfortable gaming. The newer one, on socket 1156, seriously competes with this platform. The difference in price is minimal, but what about performance? nine0003
What about processors?
It is clear that processors for the LGA 775 can now only be obtained second-hand. In our case, there are server processors that are sold on Aliexpress literally for a penny.
Initially, server processors were designed for socket 771, but the enterprising Chinese optimized the processors for LGA 775 using a soldering iron and a file. For a budget assembly, Intel Xeon E5450 processors (E5440, E5430, E5420) are ideal. They are analogous to processor Core 2 Quad Q9650 , differ only in the maximum clock frequency. The difference in price between server processors is minimal, they can be well overclocked.

All presented Zeons have 4 cores, 12 MB cache and 80 watts of power. The Intel Xeon E5450 runs at 3.0 GHz and is currently selling for $21. We recommend that you pay attention to the E5440, which operates at a frequency of 2.83 GHz, but costs $13. In «two clicks» the junior processor easily accelerates to 3.0 GHz. nine0003
It is noteworthy that the junior representative of the 1156 platform, the 4-core Xeon X3430, is now selling for only $8. It initially operates at 2.53 GHz, but can be overclocked above 3.0 GHz. For 18 bucks, you can generally buy an analogue of the Core i7. And out of the box, these processors are compatible with all socket 1156 motherboards. What am I talking about?
Everything is complicated with LGA 775 motherboards
As you understand, if the processor was originally created for socket 771, it cannot simply work on another platform — you need to reflash the BIOS to a modified one. Moreover, not all motherboards support such fraud. nine0003
The 775 platform is considered a long-liver. This means that a huge number of motherboards have been released for it, but not all of them can work with 4-core «zeons». For example, a computer will definitely not start if you insert a server processor into an Intel-made motherboard or into a board based on the 945 chipset (915 and older models). Even «xeons» (as they are not called) do not support chipsets with the letters X and Q . There are also motherboards that work with the necessary processors, but it is not recommended to use them — the P9 chipset65, nForce 650i boards and older models.
The best motherboard options for us will be all chipsets with the letters G and P , and for overclocking, you need to take older models — P35, P43, P45.

Aliexpress sells motherboards that are guaranteed to support 4-core Intel Xeon, and some are sent already with modified bios installed. It is worth noting that some boards support server processors without flashing the BIOS, but they still need to be flashed for stable system operation and proper functionality. nine0003
The most popular version of the motherboard at the moment is the Chinese «noname» on the P45 chipset. The main advantage over competitors is that the board is new and comes immediately with a modified BIOS. It supports DDR3 memory, which is very important, because 4 GB DDR2 dies are very expensive. The maximum amount of RAM is 8 GB. This miracle costs 45 dollars. There is a warehouse in the Russian Federation, which greatly speeds up the delivery process. A set of Intel Xeon E5450 and this motherboard will cost $66, if you take the Xeon E5440 — $58. nine0003
For connoisseurs of the «company» there is an option to order a simpler used motherboard. It runs on the older G41 chipset, requires a modified BIOS, and has fewer overclocking options. Also supports DDR3 memory. The cost of such a motherboard is $40.
What can I take up to $60 on socket 1156? A bundle of the weakest Xeon X3430 processor (similar to Core i5) and a budget Gigabyte GA-H55M-D2H motherboard will cost 63 bucks. For an analogue Core i7, you will have to pay another $10. nine0003
What do we end up with?
Building a budget gaming PC and saving literally every penny? Then you should definitely pay attention to socket 775. Yes, you will have to tinker with the firmware, experience an adrenaline rush during the “correct insertion” of the processor into the motherboard, and also experiment with overclocking. But in the end, you get a completely productive system even for 2018, albeit without the possibility of an upgrade. This means that it will be comfortable to play on such a system for a maximum of a year, and then with a video card of the GTX 750TI/760 or AMD RX 460/560 level. nine0003
