Corsair has lifted the cover on their new line of RGB coolers, with their 240 AIO model being christened the Corsair h200i RGB Platinum.   As expected, the pump housing and each of the 120mm fans provide multiple LED RGB lighting effects aimed at providing a user-controlled, lighting environment inside your PC case. 

Unfortunately, Corsair’s focus on providing RGB ambiance and flair with the h200i RGB Platinum doesn’t make up for otherwise lackluster cooling performance that is easily bested by the h210i RGB Platinum’s sibling, the h200i Pro at a fraction of the cost.

Intel and AMD fans can rejoice in the fact that the h200i RGB Platinum’s standard mounting kit supports hardware options for every current-generation CPU, including Threadripper. Previously, most AIO coolers have had minimal (or no) support for AMD socket TR4, and if it did it was typically only as an add-on. The included micro-B USB cable that interfaces the h200i RGB Platinum to the PC is only viable as a 9-pin USB motherboard header; there is not a 9-pin to USB Type-A adapter to connect with a typical USB port, although one could be sourced if you look hard enough.

The distinct, blocky pump housing with the silver and black color scheme and back-lit Corsair logo is the central focus of the h200i RGB Platinum, and while the pump is technically PWM controlled, it can only be managed from the Corsair iCUE software suite via the supplied micro-USB cable. As expected, RGB lighting controls, thermal monitoring and firmware are also driven over USB through Corsair’s iCUE user interface (UI).

The base of the h200i RGB Platinum is milled from copper with a smooth, satin finish and a splotch of pre-applied thermal compound, although we’ve cleaned it for better visual representation of the block mating surface (above). The pair of 90-degree swivel fittings allow some flexibility to block orientation and tube routing during installation.

The h200i RGB Platinum’s mounting plate system is a snap-fit solution. Each socket bracket pair slides around a channel groove in the block base and secures the pump base to the mounting hardware. Swapping these plates out simply requires sliding the existing bracket plates apart and away from the block and then snapping the selected ones back in.

The h200i RGB Platinum has the basic look and feel of most 240 AIO coolers in the Corsair armada: a 240mm all-aluminum radiator, black-sleeved tubing and two 120mm ML120 fans, although this time those fans are equipped with RGB LEDs. Although they sport 4-pin RGB connectors, they don’t work well with most traditional 4-pin male or female adapters, as Corsair seems intent on keeping their lighting ecosystem relatively exclusive.

As with most 240 AIOs, the Corsair h200i RGB Platinum is compatible with most PC cases that support a 2x 120mm radiator. Radiator and block installation were relatively problem-free and nearly identical to every AIO we’ve installed, which makes routing the fan, USB and RGB cabling the only portion of the cooler setup that required any real focus. Cable management not only looks tidy but also prevents chassis airflow interference for ideal thermal regulation.

Corsair Hydro h200i RGB Platinum CPU Cooler Review

Earlier this year our friends over at Corsair released three new all-in-one liquid CPU coolers with the “Pro” series and today they are introducing two brand new models in the “Platinum” series. The two new models are the Corsair Hydro Series h200i RGB PLATINUM and h215i RGB PLATINUM. The h200i RGB PLATINUM comes equipped with two 120mm ML RGB fans and a 240mm radiator for $159. 99, while the h215i RGB PLATINUM is cooled by two 140mm ML RGB fans and a 280mm radiator for $169.99.

The Platinum series is basically a new variation of the Pro series that came out in January 2018 with a handful of key changes that mainly revolve around the fans and pump head. For starters the pump and block technology used on this series is from CoolIT Systems. The Pro series was based on Asetek technology, so the core components of this new series are very different. Corsair explained to us that when they designed the Pro AIO liquid cooler series that it was done so from a quiet performance standpoint for the workloads by normal desktop users. The new Platinum series takes performance up a notch thanks to fans with higher operating ranges, a new pump head design, and some minor radiator changes. This is a good thing as more cooling performance is always welcomed as AMD and Intel keep adding more cores to desktop processors!

Oh, and you get more RGB. These two new models come with a pair of CORSAIR ML PRO Series RGB magnetic levitation PWM fans that have tuned fan profiles to deliver the right airflow and static pressure at all times. There are also 16 individually addressable RGB LEDs in the pump head to go alone with the four in each fan. That means there is a grand total of 24 RGB LEDs that you can control with Corsair iCUE software.

Legit Reviews talked with Geoff Lyon, CoolIT Systems CEO & CTO, and found that this will be exclusive to Corsair as they do not make desktop cooling products for anyone else. CoolIT says that they have increased performance on the pump and copper baseplate while being able to reduce the physical size of the pump head. CoolIT explained that this was done by heavily optimizing the flow path within the head unit to reduce the number of short, sharp, 90 degree turns and re-architecting to smooth ramping curves. The new design conserves momentum to increase flow efficiency and when combined with their new split-flow baseplate, the platinum line coolers deliver best-in-class performance with a near silent acoustic signature.

The model that Corsair sent over for us to try out was the Hydro Series h200i RGB PLATINUM. This model runs $159.99 and is backed by a 5-year warranty that includes free technical support. This AIO comes with two 120 mm fans that are capable of generating 75 CFM of airflow at 2,400 RPM. However, iCUE software has precise PWM control over the fans and the fans can be set between 400 and 2,400 RPM. At top speed you are looking at a fan noise level of 37 dBA and a static pressure rating of 4.2mm-h30.

Inside the retail box you’ll find simple to follow written instructions to get the h200i RGB PLATINUM installed in your PC case. Corsair includes a wide range of CPU sockets and this cooler will work on Intel 115x, Intel 2011/2066, AMD AM3/AM2, AMD AM4, and AMD TR4 motherboards.

We are going to be testing out this cooler on the Intel Z370 platform with an Intel Core i7-8086K 6-core, 12-thread processor. The Intel LGA115x bracket is already installed on the pump head, so installation was super simple! AMD users will have to switch brackets, but everything is straight forward thanks to the modular, tool-free mounting solution.

We should point out that Corsair pre-applies thermal compound to the copper base plate and you don’t need to buy a tube of thermal paste unless you want to use your own brand. After reviewing AIO coolers for over a decade we no longer see a big need to dedicate time to covering installation as it really is that simple.

Corsair also dressed up the Platinum series by including a brushed aluminum trim ring for the pump head to give it a higher-end appearance. The Pro series had a bead blasted trim ring.

At first glance the 27mm thick radiator looks the same on the h200i PLATINUM versus the h200i Pro, but it’s really not. Corsair changed the end caps and went from 13 rows of fins on the pro series down to 12 rows of fins on the platinum series. This changes the FPI (Fins Per Inch) and likely the fan tunes that Corsair uses in iCUE. The Corsair h205 had only nine rows of fins, but had a much thicker 38mm radiator.

The ML RGB fans also now feature rubber corners for better noise isolation. Gray corner caps are included, but these are replaceable and Corsair will sell you Red, Black, Blue or White ones for $3.99 per fan if you’d like to customize your fan appearance.

The Corsair iCUE software is optional to download and use, but we highly suggest using it. CORSAIR iCUE software allows you to control and synchronize your coolers RGB lighting with all iCUE compatible devices, monitor CPU and coolant temperatures, and adjust fan and pump speeds, all from a single intuitive interface. If you don’t download iCUE software the AIO cooler will default to quite mode and you won’t be able to control the 24 RGB LEDs that you paid for.

Here is the menu that shows the lighting effects available out of the box. If you’ve ever owned a Corsair RGB product you’ll easily be able to navigate and setup your desired lighting effects.

The Corsair Platinum AIO liquid coolers come in quiet performance mode, but iCUE will allow you to change that to Balanced, Extreme and Zero RPM. You can also use Corsair iCUE to manually adjust the pump speeds and fan curves if you’d like. You can set the pump to Extreme and the fans to Quiet if you’d like.

  • For maximum cooling performance set the fans set to Extreme and the pump set to Extreme.
  • For lowest possible noise set the fans set to Zero RPM and the pump set to Quiet. Be aware that the fans will only automatically spin up once the coolant temperature reaches 45C.
  • For good general performance set to Balanced and the pump set to Quiet.

Zero RPM is a brand new mode that not all Corsair coolers have. This mode turns both fans off and set the pump to run at quite mode. This isn’t going to be a setting to use during long periods of heavy CPU use, but we found it to be great for casual web browsing and very light use. Quite mode is silent enough for our needs, but those looking for the quietest water cooler around will love this mode.

So, how did the Corsair Hydro h200i RGB PLATINUM perform? We compared it to the ‘old’ Corsair Hydro h200i PRO RGB and found that it was 1.5C cooler at idle and 2.2C cooler at load on a stock Intel Core i7-8086K processor. So, we are seeing a 4-6% performance improvement over the previous generation. This may not seem like much, but it is a solid performance improvement. Dramatic changes in water cooler performance is rare between generations!

Idle and load power between the PRO and Platinum coolers wasn’t anything to be concerned about. We were hitting 44.7 Watts at idle and 144 Watts at load on the h200i PRO RGB. On the new h200i RGB Platinum we were using slightly more at 47.5 Watts at idle and 149 Watts at load. I’m sure you can thank all the extra RGB LEDs for the higher power draw! When we enabled Extreme mode in iCUE we dropped the load temperature down 2. 5C lower than quiet mode, but the fan and pump noise was very audible. Zero RPM mode was nice, but after running the AIDA64 CPU stress test for 20 minutes we were looking at an average temperature of 85C across all the processor cores.

Final Thoughts and Conclusions

The Corsair Hydro h200i RGB PLATINUM is one heck of an All-In-One liquid CPU Cooler. All the changes that Corsair did helps the new Platinum series perform and look better than the Pro series that came out at the beginning of 2018. This is hands down the best performing and most well rounded 240mm cooler that we have ever used. A big hats off to Corsair and CoolIT systems to come up with this new series of 240mm and 280mm coolers. Corsair does not have a 360mm Platinum model available right now and they have not informed us of any plans to bring one to market. Corsair is working on an open loop water cooling kit that is due out soon, so maybe they are saving it for later. CES 2019 is just a little over 2 months away and we expect Corsair to save some products for that trade show.

After spending some time with the Corsair Hydro h200i RGB PLATINUM our only gripe with the unit is that it has a ton of wires. You’ll need to sit down and do some serious wire management to make your installation look professional! Hopefully Corsair can come up with an innovative solution for the wiring on future series to make installation even easier down the road.

When it comes to pricing the ‘old’ Corsair Hydro Series h200i PRO RGB and h215i PRO RGB can be found on Amazon for $119.99 shipped and $139.99 shipped, respectively. The h200i RGB PLATINUM has an MSRP of $159.99 and the 115i RGB PLATINUM is $169.99. That is a significant price increase over the last series, but we were told that this pricing includes adjustments to some of the tariffs that are in place right now. The ‘old’ models on the market haven’t had their price raised due to the tariffs, so its tough to compare the two series. If the higher tariff rates go into place as expected in Jan 2019 then the older models will likely go up in price and the new models may remain the same. If the trade war ends then pricing on the new Platinum series could be adjusted down. So, just be prepared to spend a little more to get the best performing AIO cooler from Corsair and you can also blame the trade war between America and China.

Corsair Hydro Series h200i RGB Platinum liquid cooling system shipped in a medium-thick corrugated cardboard box. The design of the box is colorful, but slightly gloomy, as it uses a black background. On the outer planes of the box, not only the product itself is depicted in color, but also the main features, technical characteristics are listed, the equipment is indicated and there is a drawing of the radiator with the main dimensions. Inscriptions in several languages, including Russian. Papier-mâché mold, PE foam padding, PE foam covers and plastic bags are used to protect and distribute parts. The sole of the heat sink and the thermal paste on it are protected by a cap made of transparent plastic.

Inside the box are a heatsink with a connected pump, fans, mounting kit, USB cable, installation instructions and a description of the warranty.

Manual with drawings and explanatory inscriptions also in several languages, including Russian. The company’s website contains a description of the system, a PDF file with installation instructions, and a link to the distribution kit of the current version of iCue software. The system is sealed, primed and ready to use.

The pump is integrated in one unit with a heat sink. The sole of the heat sink, directly adjacent to the processor cover, is a copper plate (2.5 mm thick in the visible part). Its outer surface is ground and slightly polished. The plane of the sole is slightly (0.2-0.3 mm) convex towards the center.

The dimensions of this plate are 56×56 mm, and the inner part, limited by holes, is 45×45 mm. The central part of the copper base is occupied by a thermal paste applied with a thin layer. Unfortunately, there is no stock for its restoration in the delivery set. Due to temporary problems with the test PC, the water block installed on the processor had to be removed before testing, so in all tests we used thermal paste from another manufacturer, packaged in a syringe and more liquid. Looking ahead, we will demonstrate the distribution of thermal paste after all tests are completed. On processor:

It can be seen that the thermal paste has spread over almost the entire area of ​​the processor cover, and approximately in the center there is a large area of ​​tight contact.

We also ran two additional tests with an Intel Core i9-7980XE processor and an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX. Thermal paste distribution on i9-7980XE processor:

For the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX processor, the tight contact patch is smaller as a percentage of the processor lid area. It can be seen that the thermal paste layer is very thick towards the edges of the cover, and this processor has four crystals located with a shift from the center to the four corners. That is, one should hardly expect good efficiency when cooling AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors.

The base of the pump body is made of hard black plastic with a matte finish and the top is made of white translucent plastic. The top of the pump is covered with a transparent plastic cover with a mirror-smooth surface, on which a black coating is applied from the inside. The places where it is absent form the logo pattern. An aluminum frame is fixed on top around the perimeter of the pump housing.

The pump is equipped with a multi-color multi-zone (16 addressable RGB LEDs) backlight, controlled by a controller built into the pump. In plan, the pump body is a square with beveled and slightly rounded corners with a distance between the sides of approximately 62 mm. It can be seen that the pump consists of two chambers — the pump impeller rotates in the upper one, and water passes through the microchannels on the heat sink in the lower one. Under the cover on the printed circuit board are the control circuit and RGB LEDs.

Pump only 37 mm high. The length of the SATA power cable from the pump is 30 cm, and the length of the cable (one wire — only the rotation sensor signal is transmitted) to the fan connector on the motherboard is 31 cm. 8 cm to the second. USB cable length — 62 cm (Micro-USB per socket).

Relatively rigid and resilient hoses encased in a slippery plastic sheath, outside diameter of braided hoses approx. 10 mm. Hoses length — 37.5 cm (with sleeves). The hoses are not short, but there are also a couple of centimeters longer. The L-shaped fittings at the inlet to the pump rotate, which makes it easy to install the system.

The radiator is made of aluminum and has a matt black finish on the outside. Radiator dimensions — 277.5 × 120 × 27.3 mm. The maximum thickness of the heatsink with attached fans is 55mm. The complete system with fasteners for LGA 2011 has a mass of 1304 g.

The fan impeller is made of white translucent plastic with a matte finish. On the stator, there are 4 RGB LEDs in a circle that illuminate the impeller from the center.

Mounting lugs are attached to the fan frame through inserts made of elastic plastic, but the ratio of the mass of the fan and the rigidity of these vibration damping elements allows us to reasonably assume that due to the high resonant frequency this mounting system will not have any significant anti-vibration properties anyway.

Height of fan frame 25 mm (27.4 mm height over inserts). Frame dimensions — 120 by 120 mm. The weight of the fan with cables is 207 g. There is no decorative braid on the fan cables, just as there is no braid on the pump cables, which makes installation easier. The length of the fan power cable is 60 cm and the lighting cable is 61 cm.

The fasteners are made mainly of hardened steel and have a durable galvanized or semi-gloss black paint finish. Of note are the large knurled nuts that eliminate the need for tools when mounting the pump to the processor, and the fact that the mounting brackets simply fit into the slots on the pump, which is very convenient.

To control the operation of the cooling system, namely the operation of the fans, the pump and the backlight, you need to install proprietary iCue software on your PC. At least under Windows 10, the installation of this software takes place in a semi-automatic mode, the user only needs to allow the installation in the pop-up window that appears after connecting the pump to the PC via USB. Let’s go through those functions that are directly related to the cooling system in question. To access them, you need to select the system in the main window.

It is possible to monitor the values ​​of the coolant temperature, the speed of rotation of all two fans and the pump, including in the form of graphs for a certain period of time.

Backlight profile selection and customization available.

Fans and pump can be set to one of the preset profiles with different rotation speed vs. temperature, while for fans a low temperature stop profile is available.

A full description of the testing methodology is given in the corresponding article «Testing methodology for processor coolers (coolers) of the 2017 sample». This technique assumes the use of the Intel Core i7-6900K processor installed in the LGA 2011 socket. At the moment, such a system is not very relevant, so we conducted additional tests with the processor Intel Core i9-7980XE on Skylake-X core for more modern Intel LGA2066 platform (ASRock X299 Taichi motherboard was used). Most likely, in the future, testing of cooling systems will be performed only using the Intel Core i9-7980XE processor, if, of course, there is compatibility with LGA2066. For the load test, the Stress FPU function from the AIDA64 package was traditionally used. CPU consumption when measured by an additional 12 V connector on the motherboard under load varies from 128 W at 45. 9°C CPU temperature up to 147W at 88.4 °C for Intel Core i7-6900K, and for Intel Core i9-7980XE from 218W at 47.3 °C CPU temperature up to 227W at 82.8 °C . All cores of the Intel Core i9-7980XE processor worked at a fixed frequency of 2.8 GHz (multiplier 28).

Determining the dependence of the cooler fan speed on the duty cycle of the PWM and/or supply voltage

An excellent result — a wide range of regulation and a smooth increase in the speed of rotation when changing the duty cycle from 15% to 100%. Note that at a short circuit of 0% (more precisely, at 12% / 13% or less), the fans stop, which can be useful in a hybrid cooling system with passive mode at minimum load. At 13%/15% the fans start.

The change in speed is also smooth, but the adjustment range with voltage is noticeably narrower. Fans stop at 2.8V and start at 2.9V. Apparently, if necessary, it is permissible to connect them to 5V. all three voltages (12, 5 and 3.3 V).

The Intel Core i9-7980XE processor heats up more (TDP 165 W), and at a short circuit = 15%, the system can no longer cope with its cooling.

Determining the noise level depending on the fan speed of the cooler

The noise level of this cooling system varies over a wide range. It depends, of course, on individual characteristics and other factors, but somewhere from 40 dBA and above, the noise is, from our point of view, very high for a desktop system; from 35 to 40 dBA, the noise level is classified as tolerable; below 35 dBA, the noise from the cooling system will not stand out much against the background of typical non-noisy PC components — case fans, fans on the power supply and on the video card, as well as hard drives; and somewhere below 25 dBA the cooler can be called conditionally silent. In this case, the entire specified range is covered, that is, depending on the fan speed, the system can be both noisy and very quiet. The background level was equal to 16.4 dBA (conditional value, which shows the sound level meter). The noise level from the pump alone is only 18 dBA. The pump is very quiet.

Let’s try to get away from the test bench conditions to more realistic scenarios. Let’s say that the temperature of the air taken in by the cooling system fans can rise to 44 °C, but the temperature of the processor under maximum load does not want to be raised above 80°C. Restricting ourselves to these conditions, we construct the dependence of the real maximum power (denoted as Max. TDP ), consumed by the processor, on the noise level:

Taking 25 dBA as a criterion for conditional noiselessness, we get the approximate maximum power of processors corresponding to this level, this is about 170 W for the Intel Core i7-6900K processor and as much as 255 W in the case of Intel Core i9-7980XE. Hypothetically, if you do not pay attention to the noise level, the power limits can be increased somewhere else up to 200 W and 330 W, respectively. Let us clarify once again that in harsh conditions of blowing the radiator with air heated to 44 degrees, when the air temperature drops, the indicated power limits for silent operation and maximum power increase. In general, this system is typical in terms of performance in its class (for two 120 mm fans).

The results show that the Intel Core i9-7980XE processor cools much better than the Intel Core i7-6900K, i.e. the former heats up a little more, but consumes much more power than the latter. This fact can be explained by the difference in the area of ​​the crystal. Intel Core i9-7980XE it is much larger — 484 mm² (Skylake-X (HCC)), while the Intel Core i7-6900K has only 246 mm² (Broadwell-E). The negative point is that when switching to testing cooling systems using the Intel Core i9-7980XE, the results will not be consistent, that is, the results cannot be compared with those obtained on the Intel Core i7-6900K processor. But manufacturers of coolers and LSS will obviously like the formal increase in cooling capacity.

Testing on AMD Ryzen Threadripper

As an additional test, we decided to see how the Corsair Hydro Series h200i RGB Platinum system handled the cooling of the Ryzen Threadripper 29 processor90WX, the maximum consumption of which reaches 335 watts. The technique has been adapted for the AMD Ryzen Threadripper family of processors. The specified processor and Asus ROG Zenith Extreme motherboard were used. All processor cores worked at a fixed frequency of 3.5 GHz (multiplier 35).

In fact, the 2990WX processor overheats at 24 degrees of ambient air at fan speeds reached at a short circuit of 30% or lower (the voltage did not change — 12 V).

The result for LSS not optimized for AMD Ryzen Threadripper is not bad, but worse than in the case of the Intel Core i9 processor-7980XE. This can be explained by the fact that the heat sink area (more precisely, its active part) does not cover the entire area on which the AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor chips are placed.
