Single-board computers can serve as an excellent corporate tool for a variety of purposes. In the house, single-board cards will also come in handy — both for everyday tasks and as a basis for creating DIY projects.

In the new collection — a few new and not very single-board computers, which are worth paying attention to.

Orange Pi 4 LTS

The developers of the Orange Pi single-board line recently announced a new model that is equipped with a six-core Rockchip RK339 processor.9, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, USB ports. The board supports 4 GB of RAM, you can optionally install an eMMC module with 16 GB of memory. In addition, there is also a slot for memory cards. Dimensions — 91 x 56 mm.

The Orange Pi 4 LTS single board will be available this month for $55 to $70.

If you think that the processor of this device is a little outdated, then you don’t think so. But it is only morally obsolete, and then — in such devices it can be used for a long time. It has the advantage that its specs and all are very well known, having been installed on Chromebooks for several years.

Moreover, it is in the PinePhone Pro smartphone and PineBook Pro laptop. As for the processor cores, two of them are ARM Cortex-A72 CPUs, and four more are ARM Cortex-A53 CPUs. Graphics — ARM Mali-T860MP4.

The new board supports Ubuntu, Debian and Android operating systems.

Starting from mid-February, the single-payer will be available for purchase on Amazon and Aliexpress.

PocketBeagle

This is an open-source single-board computer from BeagleBone, which has one feature — it does not have a GPU, so it cannot work with a GUI.

It is based on Octavo Systems OSD3358 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 and 512 MB DDR3. The single board is only 56 x 35mm, making it as small as a Raspberry Pi Zero.

It can be connected to a laptop or desktop PC like a flash drive — and it’s very convenient. You can upload the firmware through a browser with support for a text editor and the Linux command line. The single-board also has 2 PRUs, which expands its capabilities.

ROCK5

This is another new single board based on the Rockchip RK3588 processor. It immediately supports 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM, can work simultaneously with three displays, there are wireless modules with support for WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2. Plus there is a PCIe 3.0 x4 connector for connecting an NVMe SSD.

Unfortunately, this device is not yet available, the single-board device will be available from the second half of 2022. Its cost is $129 for the version with 8 GB of RAM. There are other models, their cost is higher:

  • ROCK5 with 4GB RAM for $129
  • ROCK5 with 8GB RAM for $149
  • ROCK5 with 16GB RAM for $189

The single-board size is relatively small — 100 x 72 mm. The processor is made using 8 nm technology. Here are the CPU specifications:

  • 4 x ARM Cortex-A76 CPU @ 2. 4 GHz
  • 4 x ARM Cortex-A55 CPU @ 1.8 GHz
  • ARM Mali-G610MC4
  • Neural Processing Unit with 6 Teraflops

In general, the cost of the device is justified. It has a lot of connectors and connectors. For example, there are two HDMI 2.1 ports and a USB-C port, which allows you to connect three 8K HDR10 displays at once. And there’s also a 4k/60 HDMI input.

On the board, the developers placed a 40-pin GPIO connector, two MIPI-CSI connectors, two USB 3.0 Type-A ports and two USB 2.0 Type-A ports.

Single board PCs is a very interesting topic, but we have other articles, check it out — we talk about:

→ Small «raspberries» in a large data center
→ Apple’s new SoCs — M1 Pro and M1 Max
→ Creating your own server enclosure

Orange Pi 3 LTS

Another representative of the Orange Pi line. This is the basic version of the single board from the manufacturer, which is equipped with an Allwinner H6 processor with a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor and Mali-T720 graphics. The board has 2 GB LPDDR3 RAM, 8 GB eMMC, a microSD card slot, plus support for WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0.

As in all previous cases, the size of the board is small — 85 x 56 mm. Here’s what’s on the board in terms of connectors and headers:

  • 1 x USB 3.0 Type-A
  • 2 x USB 2.0 Type-A
  • 1 x Gigabit Ethernet
  • 1 x HDMI 2.0
  • 1 x 3.5 mm audio
  • 26-pin connector with GPIO, I2C, SPI and UART
  • IR receiver

The fee is $35.

Odroid-N2+

You can’t call this board new, but it is still in service with DIY lovers, and not only with them. You can’t name a cheap board, it costs about $80, but the capabilities of a single-board card are not bad.

Processor — Amlogic S922X (4x 2.4GHz Cortex-A73, 2x 2.0GHz Cortex A53). Graphics — Mali-G52 GPU. As for RAM, there are two options for the board — with 2 GB and 4 GB of RAM. Plus, the developers have provided eMMC with up to 128 GB.

Lots of ports and connectors:

  • HDMI 2.0
  • 4x USB 3.0 host
  • micro USB
  • 3.5 mm audio/mic
  • IR receiver
  • UART
  • RTC
  • 40-pin GPIO

The performance of the board allows you to use it to run video game emulators or software based on the Android OS. The presence of a 40-pin connector makes it possible to use the device for direct control of other equipment. All in all, the Odroid N2+ is a good all-around single board PC.

Pine A64-LTS

This is also not a new board, but it has not lost its relevance in 2022. It should be considered as a good alternative to the Raspberry Pi 4. The board has a microSD slot, HDMI, gigabit internet, two USB 2.0 and micro-USB ports.

The board measures just 133 x 80 and has a 40-pin GPIO.

Also worth mentioning is the quad-core ARM Cortex A53 1.152 GHz 64-bit processor with Mali-400 MP2 GPU and 2 GB LPDDR3 RAM. There is also an option to add an eMMC with up to 12 GB.

Actually, that’s all for today. If someone has already worked with boards from the list, tell us about your experience — what did you like and what did not?

Single board computer Raspberry Pi 4 model B (1Gb)

The miniature single-board computer Raspberry Pi 4 Model B has replaced the third generation — it is a complete replacement for the desktop on Linux. The platform is suitable not only for web surfing and application development, but can also become the “brain” for a robot or smart home, a media center, a distributed computing system node or an industrial controller.

The board already has four USB ports, a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth wireless module, and full Gigabit Ethernet to get you started right away.

Differences from Raspberry Pi 3:

Supports 4K resolution at 60Hz (HDMI 2.0).
Ability to work with two monitors at the same time.
Hardware accelerated H.265 video stream.
Availability of USB 3.0 ports.
Gigabit Ethernet controller with full speed.
Increased RAM (in older versions).
Stuffing:

The Raspberry Pi 4 uses the Broadcom BCM2711 single-chip system. The die includes a 1.5GHz quad-core 64-bit Cortex-A72 (ARM v8) processor and a 500MHz VideoCore VI GPU. According to the manufacturer, the system on the new architecture is 50% faster than previous generations of RPi, and it also supports more RAM — from 1 to 4 GB, depending on the version of the board.

This modification of the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is equipped with 4 GB of LPDDR4-2400 SDRAM, which is shared between the CPU and GPU. The top version of the microcomputer will be able to replace your PC in everyday tasks: it will be able to surf the web with many tabs and work with heavy documents in office programs. Enthusiasts can devote themselves to unleashing the power of hardware to make a Raspberry Pi 4 home media center, IPTV set-top box (STB), and other demanding projects.

If the amount of RAM is not too important, and you would like to save money, pay attention to the Raspberry Pi 4 versions with 1 GB and 2 GB of RAM.

The controller supports H.265/HEVC (up to 4Kp60) and H.264 (up to 1080p60) hardware decoding. This offloads the CPU when working with streaming video on the Internet and watching «heavy» video files in the media center mode.

The wireless module supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac standards and Bluetooth 5.0 protocol with BLE.

Peripheral connection:

The Raspberry Pi 4 has 40 GPIO pins for connecting digital sensors, expansion modules, and other peripherals. The GPIO pinout is fully compatible with past versions of the Raspberry Pi, so you won’t have any problems porting existing projects.

For connecting HDMI displays, monitors and TVs, there are two micro-HDMI 2. 0 connectors. Through them, you can simultaneously display the image on different screens. To do this, you will need a standard HDMI cable with an additional adapter, or a ready-made HDMI to micro-HDMI cable.

On the side of the controller are two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports. Standard peripherals are connected to them for comfortable work: keyboard, mouse, joystick and other USB devices.

The MIPI CSI port is designed to connect cameras for the Raspberry Pi. The MIPI DSI port is needed for direct connection of screen modules.

The audio and video output are combined in a 4-pin 3.5 mm jack, which allows you to output analog audio and composite video.

Meals:

At the bottom of the board is a USB Type-C connector for connecting power. The recommended voltage and current is 5 V, 3 A. Use a powerful switching power supply.

There is no hardware power switch. To make the board work, it is enough to connect a powered USB cable to it.

Attention! Don’t power off your Raspberry Pi 4 by simply unplugging the USB cable, as you risk killing the raspberry. For a safe shutdown, use an operating system shutdown.

Software:

The system requires a microSD memory card with Raspbian OS. In a few seconds, the system boots up with a Raspbian graphical shell similar to the familiar Windows or macOS. You can alternately use several flash cards with different system images.

Losing data or messing up badly with the settings is not at all scary, since the system can be restored on a microSD card in a matter of minutes. After that, feel free to continue experimenting.

Orange Pi 3 LTS

Another representative of the Orange Pi line. This is the basic version of the single board from the manufacturer, which is equipped with an Allwinner H6 processor with a quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor and Mali-T720 graphics. The board has 2 GB LPDDR3 RAM, 8 GB eMMC, a microSD card slot, plus support for WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5. 0.

As in all previous cases, the size of the board is small — 85 x 56 mm. Here is what is on the board in terms of connectors and connectors:

  • micro USB
  • 3. 5 mm audio/mic

The size of the board is only 133 x 80, while the device is equipped with a GPIO with 40 pins.
