Good afternoon.

The simple truth is that you need to drive what is chasing. Successful overclocking, in addition to central processors, lends itself well to system memory. But not all yogurts are equally useful, or rather, not all microchips run well relative to their nominal frequency.

Today I’m going to tell you about overclocking Crucial’s DDR3 memory based on Micron D9KPT chips, taken from my good friend for all sorts of bullying))).
Micron-based memory was the most expensive and productive during the DDR2 era and was used by many manufacturers like: Corsair, G. Skill, OCZ…

It’s no secret that the P55 platform is the best for memory overclocking. But at the same time, it is very important that it be based on an Intel Core i7 860/870 processor, because this series has a 2:12 memory divider, unlike the Intel Core i5 750, where the maximum divider is limited to 2:10. Also, the 800 series processors have a strong IMC (Integrated Memory Controller).

So let’s get started.

For more successful memory overclocking, a special cooling system using liquid nitrogen was installed.
Also, in order for us not to run into overclocking on the bus, a nitrogen glass is also placed on the processor.
Unfortunately, during the whole process, I did not have a camera at hand, so I can show pictures of the installation for cooling the memory later.

When using only air cooling, the maximum that I could squeeze out of memory was about 2600 MHz.

At low temperatures, after about an hour of «disgrace» I barely managed to squeeze out 2980 MHz. Another hour of time wasted, and that’s it … a dream came true, here it is a psychological mark of 3000 MHz. HOORAY!!!

As we previously assumed, the appearance of DDR4 RAM on the market could not significantly affect the popularity of the DDR3 standard. The lack of available platforms and the high price of modules are the two main factors that hinder the introduction of a new type of memory to the masses. Therefore, manufacturers, although they have presented their solutions based on the DDR4 format to the general public, still make the main bet on DDR3 standard kits. Kingston is especially active in the market, continuing to actively popularize its HyperX division. Not so long ago, we already talked about the new HyperX FURY memory series and even managed to get acquainted with one of its representatives. However, in less than a few months, the manufacturer made another announcement of a line of DDR3 modules. This time it was called «HyperX Savage» and, apparently, is aimed at gamers and computer enthusiasts.

The range of this series turned out to be very wide: it contains modules with a capacity of 4 and 8 GB, which can operate at frequencies of 1600, 1866, 2133 and 2400 MHz. They will hit the store shelves both in the form of single solutions, and in the format of two-channel and four-channel sets.

We were lucky enough to start our acquaintance with the new line of memory from the flagship kit DDR3-2400 HyperX Savage HX324C11SRK4/32 with a capacity of 32 GB.

Packing and appearance of modules

HyperX Savage HX324C11SRK4/32 DDR3-2400 kit comes in a compact plastic package that protects the memory modules from damage and static electricity. On the cover of the box there are stickers with brief technical information and marks on the compatibility of the kit with high-performance Intel processors that support quad-channel memory operation. For sets that include 4 modules, this is a rather important factor. On our own behalf, we will add that we are talking about the Socket LGA2011 platform, since the transition to the DDR4 standard has already taken place in Socket LGA2011-v3.

Inside the package, in addition to the memory modules themselves, there is also a manual for installing this kit on the motherboard and a sticker with the HyperX series logo. It is worth noting that the DDR3-2400 HyperX Savage HX324C11SRK4/32 kit is covered by a lifetime warranty.

Even while getting acquainted with the HyperX FURY memory line, we noted that when updating the model range of its products, the manufacturer revised its view on the appearance of the modules. In particular, the HyperX Savage series got rid of the «dull» radiators in the form of conventional rectangular plates. Now the cooling system has a bright and aggressive design with slots in the upper part. At the moment, kits with red radiators are only available, although we do not exclude that other color options will appear in the future.

In any case, DDR3-2400 HyperX Savage HX324C11SRK4/32 modules look very impressive and will definitely please the owners of cases with a side window, as well as modding enthusiasts.

At the same time, the cooling system itself cannot be called overall. The upper part of the radiator protrudes above the textolite by only 2.8 mm. Therefore, this memory kit will be compatible with the vast majority of CPU coolers on the market today.

Structurally, the cooling system of each module consists of two plates fastened together by latches, so it is not difficult to remove it. If you decide to do such an operation, then remember that this will automatically void the warranty. In addition, there is a big risk of damaging the memory chips or completely tearing them away from the textolite. Tight contact between the chips and the heatsink is ensured by thin thermal pads. During testing of the DDR3-2400 HyperX Savage HX324C11SRK4/32 kit under continuous load, the temperature of the modules was about 47.2°C. This indicator is quite good, especially considering the modest dimensions of the radiator. Just in case, we note that according to the specification, the maximum air temperature at which this kit is allowed to operate is 85 ° C.

The slats are made on black textolite, on both sides of which 8 memory chips are attached, with a capacity of 512 MB each. Thus, the volume of each module is 8 GB, and the entire set is 32 GB.

The microcircuit manufacturer is the well-known company SK hynix, and the chips themselves are marked SK hynix H5TC4G83BFR-PBA. According to the documentation, they belong to the high-performance series, since they can operate at a frequency of 1600 MHz with a reduced voltage of 1.35 V. It is not surprising that with these initial parameters, Kingston engineers managed to get them to work stably at a frequency of 2400 MHz. The SPD EEPROM chip is represented by the SEIKO S-34C02B chip.

The sticker found on the memory modules has minimal information. Only the marking (HX324C11SRK4 / 32), the number of strips in the kit (4) and the nominal supply voltage (1.65 V) are indicated. Specifications and operating modes

More detailed technical information can be obtained using special utilities. We stopped using the popular AIDA64 and CPU-Z programs, as they interpret information from the SPD according to the old algorithm and not always correctly. To avoid possible inaccuracies, it was decided to use the Thaiphoon Burner utility, designed specifically for diagnosing memory modules. Above is a brief and detailed report on the technical characteristics of the modules from the Kingston HyperX Savage HX324C11SRK4/32 DDR3-2400 memory kit.

When switching from a frequency of 1600 to 2400 MHz, the increase in performance in games and regular applications reached 2-5%. If we take into account tasks that are demanding on the speed of RAM, then here the increase in performance is already about 10-14%. In other words, the “heavier” the application (CAD systems, compilers, complex real-time calculations, modern games at maximum graphics settings), the more the effect of the effective frequency of the RAM subsystem will be felt.

As for the comparison of the DDR3-2400 HyperX Savage HX324C11SRK4/32 with its opponent, in most tests at the same frequency the new product performed slightly better. It should also be remembered that the nominal frequency of the tested memory modules is slightly higher: 2400 MHz versus 2133 MHz.

Overclocking

In practice, it turned out that the memory chips used here, despite the factory optimization, still have a certain margin for further overclocking.

HyperX Savage HX324C11SRK4/32 DDR3-2400 modules were overclocked to 2600 MHz without problems, which corresponds to an increase of 8.3% compared to the nominal frequency. The supply voltage remained unchanged (1.65 V), but the timings had to be increased to 12-14-15-33 to ensure stable PC operation. Note that usually with this frequency of operation, the value of the first CAS Latency should already be set at 13. Here, the system started with a CAS Latency of 12.

A much greater effect is observed in overclocking disciplines, for example, in the SuperPi (32M) benchmark. In this case, increasing the frequency from 2400 to 2600 MHz reduced the test time by 11.449 seconds, which is a pretty good result.

Attempts to reach higher speeds have not been successful. In addition, as practice has shown, DDR3-2400 HyperX Savage HX324C11SRK4/32 modules react poorly to an increase in supply voltage. Therefore, if you do not strive to conquer world overclocking records, but simply want to build a system with the maximum performance of all components, then we recommend stopping at DDR3-2400 MHz.

To verify the stability of the modules after increasing the frequency of their work, we used the standard memory test tool of the Windows 7 operating system. systems. During the experiment, we also decided to measure the temperature of the memory modules, which was 49.7°C. This is only 2.5°C more than in the nominal operating mode, which confirms the good efficiency of the cooling system used.
