Dell xps l501x weight: Dell XPS L501x: An Excellent Mainstream Notebook

Dell XPS 15 L501X

Why you can trust Pocket-lint

(Pocket-lint) — For a widescreen 15-inch laptop, the latest version of the Dell XPS 15 is a huge — if stylish — slab of a machine. The hefty base, with a curved cutout for the dropped hinge and stereo JBL speakers flanking the keyboard, makes the screen look slender by comparison, but this machine is something of a multimedia monster — at a mainstream price. Be prepared for the weight; by hefty, we mean 2.8kg. But packed inside the sturdy magnesium alloy chassis and tucked under the brushed aluminium lid are an impressive range of features, including one of the best screens we’ve seen on a mainstream notebook yet. Many features are optional extras though, so check the spec.

The one you’ll definitely want is the 1080p screen on our review model; the 1920 by 1080 resolution and beautiful, bright colours make watching movies or streaming HD content a delight and the Nvidia GeForce 420M can easily keep up. (The Core i5 and speedy 7200rpm hard drive make the XPS 15 a great performer generally.)

The JBL speakers and the subwoofer on the base deliver sound to go with it that’s nothing like what you expect from a 15-inch notebook. There’s more than enough volume and excellent stereo separation (at least when you’ve got the XPS 15 on your lap). The bass in particular is strong and vibrant, the midrange is punchy and details in the music are clear, although even boosted the treble is a touch disappointing (you can also tune the output from the Realtek audio with the Waves MaxxAudio control panel, which has profiles for movies, music and conversation). You wouldn’t mistake this for a high-end hi-fi setup, and we think HP’s Beats audio has a slight edge, but it’s still extremely impressive.

The XPS is what Dell and Nvidia call 3D ready; that means you can play 3D content from the Blu-ray drive (or the small amount of content that’s online so far) if you hook it up to an external 3D TV. DisplayPort and HDMI 1.4 mean it’s easy to connect to newer screens, but be aware there’s no VGA port. There is an SPDIF connection for plugging in to stereo components, or you can use it as a second headphone socket for sharing movies (and the excellent viewing angle makes that work well).

The keyboard is almost lost in the case, with a huge wrist rest and an equally large touchpad (at 4-inches it’s nearly the size of the MacBook Pro’s). The keys have a reasonable feel and amount of travel, although this isn’t the smoothest keyboard we’ve used. There’s no flex at all, as you’d expect with something this sturdy, and the keyboard is the standard XPS layout, with a vertical column of navigation keys from Home at the top to End at the bottom. There’s a dedicated key on the function row to turn off the touchpad, and a light to remind you it’s turned off, which is good use of the space available.

The matte surface on the touchpad gives you enough texture to make gestures comfortable; pinch/zoom, rotate and two-finger scrolling were all smooth and responsive and it’s nice to see the full Synaptics control panel with options like momentum dragging (which carries on moving the pointer if you hit the edge of the trackpad — so you don’t slow down suddenly in a game). The two separate mouse buttons are large enough to be usable rather than stylishly slender as well.

One thing confuses us about the mostly well-designed chassis; the battery and hard drive activity lights are on the top of the case — behind the screen where you can’t see them. On the other hand, there’s a second battery indicator on the touch control strip above the keyboard. The Wi-Fi indicator here isn’t a control for some reason — that’s an option on the function keys — and the three touch buttons open the Windows Mobility Centre (complete with plenty of useful Dell controls), the Waves Maxx control panel for the speakers and one program of your choice. Multimedia, volume and brightness controls are on the function keys and although they’re selected by default, it still seems a shame not to have them on the touch strip where you could quickly mute the system.

The SD card slot (which accepts a total of 9 different card types) is conveniently at the front and although the sides are mostly taken up by the heat vent on the left and the Blu-ray drive on the right, it’s nice to have the choice of the USB ports on either side where you can reach them or another one at the back where cables won’t get in the way. And although three USB ports might not seem generous, two of them are USB 3 ports — ideal for a fast external drive for backups or videos — and the other is a combination eSATA/USB port that can charge devices like your phone or MP3 player even when the notebook isn’t turned on.

Dell says the 2-megapixel webcam can do 720p HD and certainly it’s Skype certified, but we found the image and colour fidelity disappointing on most calls, especially in low light (and the video you see depends on what webcam the person calling you has, of course). The bundled software isn’t exciting; Windows Live and Office Starter are welcome, as are PowerDVD 9.6 and Roxio Burn, but the MacAfee security software not only slows the system down — it’s extremely hard to disable in favour of your preferred antivirus solution.

If you like the design of the XPS 15 you’ll call it understated and slab-like; if not, you’ll call it boxy. Either way the size and weight mean you may not carry it around that much. That means the slightly disappointing battery life may not be an issue. Because of the Nvidia Optimus auto-switching technology, the battery life you see varies significantly with what you’re doing; stick to surfing the Web and using Office and you’ll see the 5 hours plus that Dell claims. Crank up games, videos, Blu-ray movies, HD Skype video calls and the screen brightness and you’ll be done in about half that time. If you do want to use the XPS 15 on the go, you’ll want the optional 9-cell battery instead.

If you’re looking for a new laptop, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve tested all the top options.

To recap

We love the screen for watching movies and the speakers definitely impress, the performance is good enough for gaming and what you get for the price makes this a good all-rounder

The Dell XPS 15 is a seriously impressive laptop. Dell is calling it the smallest 15-inch laptop ever made and the reason is simple: the ‘InfinityEdge’ display – as seen on the XPS 13 and XPS 12 hybrid – has such a thin bezel that the total profile of the laptop is only a shade larger than the 15-inch 16:9 display itself.

That means it’s quite a bit ‘smaller’ than your standard 15-inch laptop but it still looks like a bit of a monster when you set it beside one of Dell’s incredible 13-inch Dell XPS 13 ultrabooks.

To give you an idea on price, the Dell XPS 15 starts from around £1,058 but the top model costs something more like £1,728 .

  • Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 review: a thin, powerful hybrid with genuine gaming chops

The entry level model is powered by an Intel Core i5-6300HQ, has Nvidia GeForce 960M graphics and comes with a full HD screen, 8GB memory and a 1TB HDD with Windows 10 installed on a 32GB SSD.

Every other model comes with a Core i7-6700HQ and the top couple of models, one of which we have here, have 4K touchscreen displays, 16/32GB memory and a 500GB/1TB SSD, while the GeForce 960M component is standard across all models.

That’s a hell of a lot of power for a home laptop particularly. It turns on and off lightning fast which is super convenient and never leaves you waiting for apps or program to load. But while this laptop is indeed blisteringly fast, by far the most impressive feature is the display.

4K screen

InfinityEdge looks fantastic, but it’s the epicly bright, 4K colour accurate picture itself that’s the real stunner. If you’ve ever walked through the TV section in a Currys or John Lewis and found yourself blown away by an OLED TV compared to its LCD compatriots, the effect is similar here.

The screen on this laptop is not an OLED but in almost all conditions you could easily believe it was one. It’s simply gorgeous to look at, mesmerising even. Contrast ratio and absolute black levels aren’t the best, but in normal applications it looks world class.

It’s also one of the best touchscreens we’ve ever used on a laptop – it might well be the best ever. It’s fast and responsive to touch and really justifies itself. We regularly found ourselves reaching out and using the touchscreen in ways we’ve in the past found it easier to jsut use the other standard inputs.

If you work with graphics you’ll love it, and you’ll find the Nvidia GeForce 960M and Intel Core i7 more than powerful enough to handle the toughest of tasks.

Gaming

And if you’re hoping to game on this laptop, you can absolutely do so. But your best bet would probably be to go for the full HD option in order to hit playable framerates for demanding games — either that or plug into a secondary 1080p screen. You can buy this laptop with all of the power but 1080p non-touchscreen for £1,308 – and you’ll save some weight there as well, 1.78kg versus 2kg.

It’s worth pausing and mentioning that weight for a second. If you’re weighing up whether to get the Dell XPS 13 or the XPS 15, weight has to be a consideration. The XPS 15 is not far off double the weight of the non-touch version of the XPS 13 – 1.2kg versus 2kg. That combined with the substantial increase in size means that the 13 is ideal for carrying around with you, the 15 is not despite its relative smallness. You won’t want to have this in a bag on your back all day.

Keyboard and trackpad

The keyboard on the XPS 15 is exactly the same as on the XPS 13 which means it does look a bit lost in the middle of the larger carbon fibre-effect chassis. That being said, you probably wouldn’t want it to be any bigger because it’s super comfortable to type on and the keys feel responsive with just enough travel.

The trackpad, where some Dell’s have been a bit of a letdown in the past, is also excellent. That being said, the enemy of all laptop users are ‘accidental inputs’ where your hand or your arm touches the trackpad by accident. That’s still an issue here, particularly because it’s so large. Honestly if you’re using this laptop on a desk you should probably use a mouse and disable the pad, but that’s true of basically all laptops.

Ports and connections

Honestly this is one of the only areas where you might question some of Dell’s design decisions. There are only two USB 3. 0 ports on this laptop. Where you’d normally expect the third one to be on the right hand side you instead have a battery meter. You press a button and it uses five mini-LED’s to let you know the state of the battery.

That’s theoretically useful when the laptop is turned off, but seriously, given the number of times you’ll ever use it versus a third USB port it seems like an unnecessary and disappointing compromise.

You also get an SD card slot, a full size HDMI port and a Thunderbolt 3 port which supports PowerShare, 40Gbps data transfer in both directions, VGA, HDMI, Ethernet and USB-A – but you’ll need to buy the relevant cables or one of Dell’s Thunderbolt docks, none of which come with the laptop.

Battery life

Dell claims battery life of up to 17 hours but in reality you’ll probably get substantially less than that. We managed to get about 5 hours out of it under normal conditions which is pretty good actually, especially given it has a 4K touchscreen and very powerful components. You’ll get more like 3 hours if you run with maximum screen brightness while performing demanding tasks with high CPU use.

Cosmetics

This laptop looks the business, particularly when you open it up. The carbon fibre effect on the inside surface is the same as on the XPS 13 and looks brilliant. You could even say that the laptop would look better if the whole laptop was done out with that material instead of the slightly boring silver aluminium shell.

One explanation for why Dell did not do that could be that the carbon fibre surface is an absolute fingerprint magnet. I’ve heard and read people saying that about many smartphones and other laptops in the past. But I’ve never used a device that attracted, retained an displayed fingerprints like this one. It can look really quite grotty after some intense use and it’s definitely our least favourite aspect of the device, albeit just a cosmetic one.

T3 Verdict

The Dell XPS 15 is a fantastic laptop and a no-brainer purchase for anyone who wants a laptop that lives primarily on a desk at home or in the office. It’s cheaper and more highly specc’d than a MacBook Pro and makes far more sense to buy than something like a Microsoft Surface Pro 3.

The 4K screen is seriously gorgeous to look at while the colour accuracy makes it ideal for anyone working with graphics. We’d happily buy one of these for ourselves and that’s about the highest praise we can give.

Dell XPS L501x Laptop Review

The DELL XPS L501x is a laptop that can compete with the Apple Macbook Pro in terms of performance and quality. The XPS L501x has 15.6 inches of Full HD screen display, an Intel Core i7 and a 640GB HDD. The XPS L501x is not as attractive as the Apple Macbooks but it is more budget wise and much more powerful.

Specifications:

  • 15.6 inch HD display
  • NVIDIA GeForce® GT435M 2048 MB Graphics Card
  • Intel Core i7 processor
  • 4GB DDR3 RAM
  • 640GB HDD
  • 16x DVD+/-RW
  • Integrated Gigabit Ethernet
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • Intel Centrino Advance WiMAX 6250
  • 2.0 MP Camera
  • Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
  • 6 Cell Battery: up to 5 hours

The XPS L501X passes my not-yet-patented backpack test (where I see how heavy it feels when carried in my backpack as I commute on my bike), and the Dell XPS L501x battery life is pretty good (especially when compared to other, bulkier XPS models). Sporting an Intel i7 CPU (1.73Ghz), 6GB of memory and running Windows 7 64-bit Premium edition, the XPS has a 15.6-inch screen (capable of pumping out 1080p resolution content from the HDMI 1.4 connection) and comes with two USB 3.0 ports, a LAN connection and an nVidia GT435M graphics chip – just right for all the gaming you’ll want to do.

What separated itself for people was just how good the particular Dell XPS L501x’s inner stereo system loudspeakers seemed. They are certainly not an area about genuine computer speakers, but they’re The very best we now have observed in a laptop computer. Apparent Treble plus a unexpected amount of mid-range and Largemouth bass make the XPS L501x fine for music or motion picture Play.d

The graphics card is also pretty good for a notebook. At medium settings, the Dell XPS L501x AC adapter churned out an average of around 30 frames per second in Crysis 2, Bad Company 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R, which are playable results, plus an ultra-smooth 60 frames per second in Trackmania on high settings. On paper, the GT 435M graphics chipset is roughly similar in terms of processing power to Nvidia’s decent-but-dated 9600GT desktop cards. Coupled with the fairly low resolution of the screen, it should be able to handle most other modern games at medium settings as well.

The HD theme follows through to the Skype-approved webcam, which manages to capture 720p video without fuss or dropping frames. This model also features an integrated digital tuner, so if you’re lucky enough to be able to pick up a signal on the mobile aerial included, you can watch your pick of Freeview. Sadly, it’s DVB-T only, so that’s means no hi-def telly, and inexplicably it’s left to the user to work out that Windows Media Centre is to act as your conduit to televisual delights.

On flipping to back, there is a JBL Subwoofer 🙂 of power 12w, three heat vents & four rubber feet which gives elevation & better air flow. It contains a panel with 3 screws; upon removing one can add memory, WWan/TV cards easily. Mine is 9-cell Dell K4CP5 battery one, obviously it gives better elevation and also battery comes with charge level indicator.

We’re also still trying to get an HP Envy 14 in for comparison, and it would be great to get some Sony laptops in for testing as well, but with every passing week we tend to lose hope. At this point, the latest Envy 14 revision has been around for over three months. It still looks like it compares well with the new XPS L501X, but the Radiance Infinity 900p panel is no longer an option, Waves comes standard while Beats costs extra, and Optimus trumps AMD’s switchable graphics.

One thing confuses us about the mostly well-designed chassis; the Dell XPS L501x battery and hard drive activity lights are on the top of the case — behind the screen where you can’t see them.

The Dell XPS L501x can be customised with one of over 100 designs on its lid. Ours came with the Dazzling Dreams design, which we thought was very unusual and attractive. What stood out for us was how good the Dell XPS L501x’s internal stereo speakers sounded. They’re not a patch on real computer speakers, but they’re the best we’ve heard in a laptop. Clear treble and a surprising amount of mid-range and bass make the XPS L501x fine for music or movie playback.

I sent back the extended battery that came with the system (the 92 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion) for the standard (56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion), as the extended Dell K4CP5 battery was too tall and tilted the laptop to an uncomfortable angle. So much so I called and had them send me out the smaller one instead. The hard drive being a dud sucked, but I’ll say that is an isolated incident, and the replacement has been flawless.

The new design looks better, and it feels better as well—though we didn’t have any real complaints with the Studio XPS build quality to begin with. The L501x has rounded corners and beveled edges that fit together snugly and look attractive. It’s a sturdy laptop—not at the level of business notebooks perhaps, but definitely a step up from the Inspiron and other consumer offerings. Some may prefer the industrial design aesthetic of the Adamo line, but personally the L501x is more my speed. The palm rest is plenty large, with an equally large touchpad in the center. Like most modern laptops, the touchpad is multi-touch and gesture aware; it may not integrate with the OS as well as the MacBook touchpad does with OS X, but that’s more of a Windows and application problem.

Dell has been peddling its premium XPS desktops and laptops for many years now. Like most products in its line up the L501X we received this month is a good looking, solid little piece of equipment.

The XPS L501x is not quite perfection in laptop form, but considering it’s loaded down with goodies and outperforms hardware going for twice the price, it demands to be considered by anyone after a powerful portable.

Typing experience on this keyboard is really really good. Keys are well placed, but one can be disappointed with absence of numeric pad. Above the keyboard is a capacitive touch panel which can be used to launch any one favorite application, Windows Media Control / Dell Utility & Maxx Wave Settings and also it has light indicators for Wifi, Capslock etc. The function keys be default are set as Multimedia Keys & Special keys like Brightness, WiFi, Monitor out, Backlit, Voulme & Media control buttons. But those can be reverted back to function keys, by changing a simple setting in bios.

If there’s one thing that annoyed me about the XPS L501X – and it annoyed me about a previous Dell laptop that I looked at – it was the intrusive pop-ups from the pre-installed McAfee anti-virus software, which got on my nerves with their continual warning that «Your computer is at risk». It became more annoying when it did it while I was watching DVDs.

All of us went via a series of performance checks to give the particular Dell XPS L501x charger somewhat of a possiblity to extend the legs. Our own Blender rendering analyze carried out 2min 14sec utilizing a solitary thread with the CPU as well as 43sec when working with almost all eight accessible strings. 3DMark06 delivered due to 7390 3DMarks, as well as iTunes encoded 53min regarding WAV files in order to 192Kbps New music in 1min 16sec. They’re powerful outcomes and are reflected within the generally snappy functioning with the Dell XPS L501x.

Although you can get an XPS L501x for as little as $629, with Core i5, Bluetooth 3, the combo Blu-ray/DVD burner and the superb 1080p screen the model we looked at is nearly twice the price at $1039. You can reduce that by leaving out a few of the options, but it’s the combination of the screen, the sound system and the performance that makes the XPS L501x a winner. The word we keep wanting to use is solid — but in a good way.
