I own both these cards i have to get rid of one, the problem is the last time i used the Diamond Viper V770 TNT 2 Ultra it crashed in diablo 2 ( every bloody time in the same spot ) although it was on anouther computer ( shouldnt matter that computer worked fine on every other game i have ).
My questions are:
a: Will my Diamond Viper V770 TNT 2 Ultra out perform my voodoo 3 2000 in every game especialy Unreal Tournament, Sacrifice, Half Life, NBA LIVE 2000, Diablo 2 ?
b: will it have any problems with these games or any other games ( i dont want to install this card and see it crash my computer in some games View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif ) ?
c: which one would you use if you were me?
and please give a reason why you think i should use what ever card you think i should use
computers specs:
. Celeron 500mhz
. 192MB of SDRAM 133mhz
. Creative Sound Blaster Live! Value
. Abit BF6 M/B
. soon to have a 19 inch moniter
I use this machine for surfing the net and playing computer games.
I havent used my Diamond Viper V770 TNT 2 Ultra on the computer above ( the one under specs )

The V220 had 2 advantages over the V3 2000
(i) 32-bit colour
(ii) more frequent driver updates from nVidia.
However, turning on the 32-bit colour will lower your framerates by around 25% (remember, no GPU in TNT2Us), and it’s arguable as to whether or not you’ll notice / have time to notice it when playing games. With a Celeron 500, you should probably be content at 16-bit colour. The issue of compatibility is partially addressed by nVidia’s frequent driver updates. But although they’re released more often, 3dfx is still the king of compatibility here — the UT engine is still quite popular, and a voodoo card does the business here. The newest drivers from 3dfx are quite a decent improvement over previous ones, too. And this time there was scarcely a month between updates.
That said, if you play a lot of UT, GLide is the API to do it with, and your V3 will probably do better in GLide than the Viper in D3D in this respect.
SOooooo:
If you plan on upgrading your CPU anytime soon, keep the TNT2 Ultra. If not, I’d keep the V3

and if you plan on playing d2 a lot then perhaps the v3 would be better. on my system d3d performance was lower than 2d performance with my tnt2 (and looked the same anyway ?) on this poorly written software. Now i have a mx and the performance may be a bit better than with the tnt2 but as in multiplayer it wants to crash every few minutes i can’t be bothered seeing if that is the case.

TNT2 Ultra (V770):
32bit colour.
Large texture support.
32MB RAM.
AGP Texturing.
150MHz Core.
183MHz Memory.
Frequent (Beta) driver updates.
Voodoo3 2000:
16MB RAM.
143MHz Core/Memory.
Stable drivers.
Most can OC to 183MHz+ (my 3000 is at 192MHz with stock cooling) obtaining equal or greater performance to the TNT2Ultra @ 16bit colour (as long as texture thrashing doesn’t become an issue with only 16MB).
If I were running WinME I’d pick the TNT2Ultra. If I were running Win2K and/or Linux, I’d pick the V3. The cards should really run pretty much neck and neck, it’s mostly personal preference. Then again, I don’t know how the TNT2Ultra overclocks? The V3 can pickup 20% or so… what can the TNT2Ultra do?

I had TNT2 and I have Voodoo3 3000 now.
I took one look at HL and I knew I will stick with Voodoo…don’t care about the numbers…I CAN SEE that voodoo is better (on my computer — celery 600, 256PC100)

Don’t know how this would pan out, but can you sell both and get something better? New V3 3000’s can be had for ~$80.

I would stick with the V3 2000. A lot of old games don’t support 32 bit colour and the newer games run too slowly on the TNT2 at that setting. For 16 bit rendering nothing touches 3dfx’s 22 bit postfilter.
Plus 3dfx’s drivers and hardware are rock solid and really compatible.

I’ve always thought the V3 line was much maligned, when they’re actually highly competant cards. Their 2D output is really quite good, and with a 350Mhz CPU or faster, their 3D output just keeps going. Their compatibility has always been legendary (i.e. you almost never see a game requiring a patch to run a 3dfx card), and GLide a secret ace up the sleeve with regards to performance.

As a former owner of a Diamond Viper V770 Ultra (TNT2 Ultra) I was more than pleased. I tested V3 2000&3000 and IMHO they are OUTDATED in terms of modern games (no AGP texturing, no 32bit rendering, no large textures, only 16Mb etc.). I gave my Diamond to a friend and he uses with a Abit BP6/C400@552 and works great.
Overclocking was also great (150/183 default, 175/200 with no problems — I didn’t even try more).
So, I recomand the TNT2 Ultra. Just put it in Quake3 and it will leave any V3 in the dust.

Having run both cards, in Quake II, definitely, the V770 Ultra kicks ass. Voodoo3 handles everything, up to a certain point.
For the particlar generation of cards involving the question, it depends. I liked the Unreal engine, I like the glide API. And there, of course, is a major point. If you are going to play games which consist mainly of OpenGL or Direct3D software, the Viper770 is the way to go.
However, a Voodoo3 device and a Glide enabled game, is a beautiful experience.

The TNT 2 is a better ‘future’ card. Even on the more recent games the V3 2000 will have problems keeping up. Not to mention that you can’t possibly run 32 bit color which, in my opinion, is necessary to play most games.

quote:
However, turning on the 32-bit colour will lower your framerates by around 25% (remember, no GPU in TNT2Us),

What the heck does a GPU have to do with 32 bit color. The only thing I could think of is the fact that the geometry and transform information stress memory bandwidth further and therefore it is possible that a geforce would take a harder hit going to 32 bit color. I would much rather run 800x600x32 than 1024x768x16 because 800×600 looks much better in 32 bit color than higher resolutions would look in 16 bit color.
You can add that to Nvidias driver record. nVidia had stable win2k drivers way before 3dfx and their drivers are as good or better in almost every circumstance.
When whistler comes out you can bet that Nvidia will have better TNT drivers than 3dfx will have V3 drivers at the release date.
In general, however, the cards are comperable.
// LJ
