Sweeper Truck Operator Training Simulates Parking Lot Sweeping

1-800-SWEEPER along with Digital Image Studios has developed the power sweeping industry’s first virtual sweeper truck training simulator. SweeperSIM is revolutionary software that helps management in the commercial power sweeping industry screen, test, train and validate new drivers developing their skill sets before putting trainees behind the wheel of a real truck.

The SweeperSIM’s driving simulator allows managers to train new parking lot sweeper operators in a simulated sweeping environment which measures their performance against best-practice benchmark criteria. The night-time environment and peripheral vision from the cab of the sweeper are hyper-realistic, with rich graphics rivaled by only the best in modern gaming.

An operator has detailed controls that mimic a typical sweeping truck including a realistic steering wheel, accelerator, brake and reverse foot pedals in addition to sweeper-specific broom and head controls.

The simulation mimics night driving in a large retail parking lot and includes a variety of typical obstacles such as shopping carts, potholes, speed bumps, islands, cart corrals, light poles and more, in addition to handpicking debris objectives. The simulation also includes a static debris pattern of common parking lot trash, where debris naturally tends to accumulate based on human behavior and the environment.

Completion of objectives is scored at the end of each driving simulation session to measure and develop the mental awareness and aptitudes required to perform parking lot sweeping in the most efficient manner.

SweeperSIM features a panoramic view from the driver’s seat. An overhead diagram of the parking lot layout is also displayed along with live visual recording of the session statistics. The experience is enhanced through the use of realistic sounds paired with interactions in the simulator environment. Examples include the sound of broken glass and other debris being sucked up into the hopper and the sound of the gutter broom when it is engaged.

Operating SweeperSIM

Operators control vehicle speed and are able to stop the truck if, for example, they need to “exit the cab” and move an obstacle such as a shopping cart or “pick up” debris by hand that can’t be picked up by a sweeper. These actions are done using a mouse click on the screen. Mouse clicks simulates handwork, which is part of the work required on a typical property.

As the operator “sweeps” the parking lot, SweeperSIM tracks the driver’s performance. The software monitors time on the parking lot, total turns, right-hand turns, percentage of debris picked up and percentage of area covered. The simulated conditions and obstacles have been carefully constructed with input from experts in the sweeping business to test even the most experienced drivers as they hone their skills and/or qualify new drivers.

Because the simulation is set in the middle of the night, operators experience a field of view provided by the truck’s headlights. It takes practice to get used to sweeping a parking lot looking through headlights, so this gives new driver trainees a good idea of what the job will looks like at night.

Once a participant has completed sweeping the parking lot, the system tallies the driver’s points and mistakes and generates a score based on weighted parameters set by the instructor. The more debris you collect, the shorter your time on the route, the fewer turns and fewer right-hand turns you make; the higher the score. In the event of a collision with a wall, sign, speed bump, curb or parked car – the simulator session ends and is scored accordingly.

SweeperSIM As A Hiring And Training Tool

SweeperSIM will help management in power sweeping companies qualify new prospective employees and clearly demonstrate the responsibility requirements of the job, serving as a pre-employment screening process.

SweeperSIM is designed to help trainees develop the mental discipline to work efficiently. Driver-trainees can be taught to section off areas, to finish an area before moving on, and even be made aware of areas that require hand picking. It will also teach and reinforce proper parking lot best practice sweeping habits, such as approaching a speed bump squarely, rather than at an angle and minimizing gutter broom usage when sweeping wide open areas.

This final tally of a session not only tells owners if a prospect is ready to operate their street cleaning trucks and do the job, it also lets job candidates or trainees know where they stand and how well they did – before they ever get behind the wheel of expensive trucks or expose their company to real world liability or damages.

How the Broadway City Cleaner Works

Every good housewife knows how difficult it is to keep her house in order, but not everyone can imagine the effort required to keep an entire city clean. Household appliances help a person to clean up an apartment, and to cope with this task on a metropolitan scale, much more serious machines are required. In today’s issue of the Tekhobzor project, which City News is conducting jointly with the municipal special motor transport enterprise (SATP), we will talk about the powerful city cleaner Broadway.

Global Cleaning Tool

Various vehicles come out to fight the winter mud in the spring in Krasnoyarsk, but Broadway is always at the forefront of this communal army. The general cleaning of the city begins with it. Broadway is not a standalone machine, it is a sweeper trailer that can work with any dump truck.

In Krasnoyarsk, it is usually paired with capacious trucks — «KamAZ», which simultaneously tow a road assistant and take in the back of a street «estimate» (this is how public utilities call soil, sand, parts of plants, household waste from the road).

Broadway’s main sweeping tools are round side brushes with metal bristles and more than a meter in diameter, a rear cylindrical brush, an elevator that picks up debris from the road, and a conveyor belt needed to send dirt to the dump truck bed. An autonomous motor is installed on the elevator, which spins the mechanism.

— «Broadways» collect the heaviest dirt, — says Anton Starovoitov, technical director of SATP. — During the winter, so much garbage and fine dispersed dust accumulate in the city that for each first spring trip, cars manage to fill two dump truck bodies. If you’re driving through town and see a yellow Broadway parked on the side of the road, don’t think the car is idle. It’s just that the kit has already gained a full body, and the driver went to the landfill with garbage, unloads, returns and continues to work. The installation, by the way, is anti-vandal, while waiting, it turns off and closes.

There are only 14 sweeper trailers in SATP. Since our city is large, it will not be possible to restore order in it in one day or even a week after a long winter, but it is not in our interests to delay cleaning, because in the summer «Broadway» also in demand. True, in the warm months there is less garbage, in a few days one body is collected. A new increase in volume occurs with the beginning of leaf fall.

The main garbage is from smokers

It may seem surprising, but the bulk of the waste that Broadway collects in Krasnoyarsk is cigarette packs and cigarette butts. According to Starovoitov, entire KamAZ trucks are recruited like this. The smell from the estimate is appropriate. Yes, the inhabitants of our metropolis are still not very neat and, unfortunately, they treat the city, as well as their health, not very carefully. Therefore, it is not possible to do without large equipment.

— “Broadway” is able to work on rather narrow roads — from one meter 70 centimeters, and if necessary, it increases the garbage capture width to three meters, — says Starovoitov. — The machine is not afraid of bumps in the road and potholes: the brush sweeps the debris more efficiently than, for example, a car with a vacuum cleaner.

Sweeps the kit, moving at speeds from 500 meters to 25 kilometers per hour, depending on the amount of debris on the street. The performance of the equipment is up to 1.2 tons — this is how much dirt Broadway can collect per minute, quickly coping with cleaning even a very large area.

Another plus of this machine is the irrigation system, a large supply of water and nozzles on the ramps, with which the road is wetted before sweeping. This modern “miracle broom”, like most modern household appliances, works from a remote control.

Work after the holidays

«Broadways» become indispensable helpers of public utilities after … grandiose holidays, which are so loved by residents of megacities. Where a lot of people gather, there is always a huge amount of garbage. Bottles, cups from a variety of drinks, flags, ribbons, candy wrappers, bags. All this rather large waste is quickly collected by Broadway. Small rubbish and dust behind it is cleaned by a road vacuum cleaner. And then comes the communal road machine (KDM), already known to the readers of the City News, which washes the street clean.

By the way, as a rule, the technician goes to work with the same set in early spring. But only when the average daily temperature rises above zero. With negative values, vacuum cleaners and summer attachments on the KDM cannot work.

Anton Nikolaevich notes that the Broadway was also conceived by the manufacturers as a summer car, but SATP learned to use this technique even at sub-zero temperatures, having slightly improved the mechanisms.

— Knowing the attitude of our mayor to cleanliness and order in the city, we had no choice — told Starovoitov. — In other countries of the world, where it is also cold, Broadways are not operated outside of the summer season. And in Krasnoyarsk they are used. We have such a unique city. Naturally, we do not practice irrigation of the road at negative temperatures, no one needs ice on the road, but this trailer works on the principle of an elevator, so it can easily cope with tasks even at minus 10 degrees, for example.

Every day up to 150 pieces of equipment from the municipal special motor transport enterprise go out to clean the streets of Krasnoyarsk. There are more than 200 vehicles in the fleet: dump trucks, snow loaders, motor graders, tractors, loaders, road vacuum cleaners, water pumping and combined road machines.

According to representatives of public utilities, its use is tantamount to the simultaneous use of several types of equipment at once: a tractor with a brush, a watering machine, a front loader and a dump truck.
— Such equipment is quite unique for our city. But in the capital cities of the country, such vacuum machines are widely used. In our city, we plan to use it on the street. Soviet, square them. According to experts, despite its compact size, the sweeper has a high performance. Among its advantages are good maneuverability, high reliability, convenient and simple control.
— In Moscow, this technique is very popular, it has proven itself well there: it works for a long time and with high quality. In addition, it can drive not only on tiles, but also clean asphalt, surrounding areas and sidewalks. The machine performs well on roads with heavy traffic: where other harvesting equipment cannot pass, the VKM-2020 machine works successfully,” Dmitry Sukhenko noted.
While the new car has not yet started cleaning the streets, for this it must be registered. And also in the MKU «Landscaping and landscaping» two drivers are being trained who will work on this machine.
