With New Driver, Intel Arc GPUs Run Older DirectX 9 Games Up to 79% Faster
It’s no secret that Intel’s Arc graphics cards struggle to offer the best frame rates on older games. But in some good news, the company has developed a new driver that can boost performance on select DirectX 9 titles such as CounterStrike: Global Offensive by as much as 79%.
Intel is rolling out the performance enhancements through a new “31.0.101.3959” driver(Opens in a new window) for its Arc GPUs on both desktops and laptops. The beta driver specifically includes performance optimizations for eight games built with DirectX 9, which originally came out two decades ago.
Intel also posted(Opens in a new window) benchmarks comparing the new driver to an old one Intel released in October, when Intel’s flagship Arc desktop cards first launched. As you can see, the new driver can help CS:GO and League of Legends—two games popular on the esports circuit—reach over 300fps.

In terms of average FPS, the performance uplift can range from a mere 3% to 30% all the way up to nearly 80%, depending on the DirectX 9 title. The new driver also promises to eliminate stuttering in the frame rates by producing consistent frame times, resulting in a smoother performance.

The reason for performance gain is due to Intel developing a native DirectX 9 implementation for the eight PC games. In August, the chip maker quietly dropped the native DirectX 9 support for Intel GPUs in favor of software emulation through Microsoft’s open-source D3D9On12(Opens in a new window) interface.
But in a video on Tuesday, Intel graphics fellow Tom Petersen said: “We weren’t satisfied with where we ended up on DX9, so we’ve been working on it.”
The only catch is that the native DirectX 9 implementation is designed to work with specific games, such as Guild Wars 2 and Stellaris. For other DirectX 9 titles, the Arc GPU will revert to relying on emulation.

“So there will be times when a game is going to run on our native DX implementation. But there’ll be other times when we take advantage of translation layers to go from DX9 to a more modern API,” Petersen said. “So our new approach is to do a hybrid.”
According to Petersen, Intel created the DirectX 9 implementation to make the company’s graphics cards more appealing to players of esports games, such as CS:GO. “They’re not all, but a lot of [esport titles] are DX9 titles,” he said, later adding. “So we cannot be a graphics vendor without doing a great job on CS:GO.”
The eight DirectX 9 games that can benefit from the driver include: League of Legends, CS:GO, Payday 2, Stellaris, Starcraft 2, Guild Wars 2, NiZhan and Moonlight Blade.

Far Cry 3
«Open world» in any video game is always an element of the gameplay with increased interest and quality expectation index. Some players are ready to make concessions and accept the roughness of the gameplay or story, if the implementation of the open world is at a high level — it is large, lively, visually pleasing and fits the overall atmosphere of the game as a whole.
And if now the open world is a huge territory where you can explore almost every corner, then some 5-10 years ago the open world was significantly limited, but it was also interesting to explore, it was nice to look at it and come back again and again.
Below we’ve rounded up some of the best open world games for you to enjoy even on a (conditionally) weak PC.
***
Considering that all modern open-world games have much more serious system requirements than a PC with a weak configuration can offer, within the framework of this collection, more than 9-ty years ago. Yes, we can say that modern AAA titles can be played at minimum wages, but is it possible to enjoy the game in this way? Debatable question!
As part of the selection, we will deviate from the course of previous articles and also present games whose release dates back to the first decade of the 21st century. Far cry 30046
Steam rating: 89%
The first part of Far Cry from Crytek became one of the best games in the industry, but the second part came out as a failure, despite the interesting concept and mechanics.
Far Cry 3 moved to the sunny island of Rook, which is run by local pirates led by Vasa Montenegro, who later became a feature of the game and the «favorite» villain of gamers.
This story, where the protagonist Jason Brody tries to save his friends from the clutches of the sadistic Vasa without losing his humanity, with a complex emotional ending and a beautiful open world with a bunch of gorgeous landscapes, can be called one of the best open world games. the world and not only for weak PCs.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag
Release date: October 29, 2013
9000%
For all fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise (which the author of this article considers himself to be) it is known that the story of the English privateer and pirate Edward Kenway was originally supposed to be a separate game, not related to the confrontation between the Assassins and the Templars. But Ubisoft management decided to tie the game to the main series and make it a direct sequel to Part 3, which resulted in the appearance of one of the best games in the series, which some «fans» consider the last canonical part of the franchise. The opinion must be said to be the most controversial, but this topic is already for a separate extensive discussion.
So, the events of the game «Black Flag» will take us to the era of the «Golden Age of Piracy» (1715) in the waters of the Caribbean Sea, where we have to stand at the helm of the pirate two-masted brig «Jackdaw» and surf the endless sea in search of boarding targets and replenishment of the hold of your ship.
The plot of Black Flag, the gameplay and the large and beautiful open world, which are interesting to visit with soulful pirate songs and a bottle of rum in hand, confidently allow us to call the game one of the standards of «piracy simulator» and one of the best games in the franchise Assassin’s Creed.
