Which are the best graphics cards?

AMD’s R9 Nano crams a full Fury X into a tiny 6-inch form factor

Earlier this year, AMD unveiled three new graphics cards: the R9 Fury X, R9 Fury, and R9 Nano. While the top-of-the-line water-cooled R9 Fury X and air-cooled R9 Fury have both since been released to positive reviews, the mini-ITX sized R9 Nano has remained something of a mystery. Fortunately, the Nano appears to have been worth the wait. While the Nano costs the same as a Fury X—$649, or about £530 (UK pricing is unconfirmed)—the diminutive card also sports the same full-fat Fiji chip, which is crammed into its teeny 6-inch form factor.

With the R9 Nano you get full 4096 stream processors, 256 texture units, 64 ROPs, and 4GB of 4096-bit high-bandwidth memory operating at 1000MHz. AMD claims performance is around 8.2 TFLOPS, which is only five percent below that of the Fury X. Even better, the Nano needs just a single 8-pin PCIe power connector, with a typical power consumption of 175W, which is miles below the 275W of the Fury X.

Of course, such dramatic power savings have to come from somewhere, and for the Nano that means a reduction in clock speed. The Nano’s GPU is rated for «up to 1000MHz,» with AMD saying that under typical usage in most games it runs between 850MHz and 900MHz. That’s around a 14 percent decrease over the 1050MHz of the Fury X, but it’s still impressive given the Nano’s size. AMD puts performance somewhere between the Fury and Fury X, with the full shader count helping to mitigate the drop in clock speed versus the Fury.

Keeping the Nano cool is a combination vapour chamber and heat-pipe solution with a single fan, which largely vents hot air outside of the case, making it a great fit for smaller mini-ITX systems. AMD claims that because the Nano is targeted at the sweet spot of the Fiji power/performance curve, its target temperature under load (albeit with decent case cooling) is 75 degrees Celsius. Even better, the card won’t start throttling until it hits 85 degrees, which is the typical load temperature for most high-end graphics cards.

The Nano sports a similar design theme to the Fury X, with a brushed aluminium finish, full metal shroud, and matte black PCB. It’ll initially only be available in the reference design, but partner cards with different designs will arrive later in the year. That said, users who are brave enough to install third-party cooling solution, or water-cool the card, will be able to overclock the card to Fury X levels simply by changing the power target in AMD’s Catalyst Control Center software. Further overclocking will be possible with third-party tools like MSI’s Afterburner software.

The Nano is an extremely interesting product, then, and as AMD points out, there’s not really much else like it on the market. Both the R9 380 Compact and GTX 970 Mini have similar form factors, but both are in a completely different performance bracket to the Nano. For those building a mini-ITX gaming PC that can’t take a full-length graphics card, or even those wanting to build a low-power CrossFire system (there’s support for up to four-way CrossFire), the Nano is potentially going to be the best option.

At $649/£530, you will have to pay for the privilege when the Nano is released on September 10. But on paper at least, performance should be outstanding compared to the competition. AMD is also at pains to point out that the Nano and Fury X are a «dual flagship stack,» with one «all about performance,» and the other «about form factor.» Whether users will see it that way remains to be seen, but consider our interest piqued.

If the Nano does indeed perform as well as, if not better than, the Fury thanks to its full shader count, then it’ll be an outstanding card for smaller system builds. That’s not to mention the potential for overclocking, which could push performance even further. Hopefully we’ll get to put the card through its paces; we’d love to see how the R9 Nano does under DirectX 12.

AMD Radeon R9 Nano Review

Over the past few months AMD has been focusing its efforts on the high-end GPU fight with its ‘Fiji’ line up. The Radeon R9 Fury X lead the charge armed with 4096 stream processors and AMD’s cutting-edge high-bandwidth memory technology (HBM).

Priced at $649, the Fury X is AMD’s most expensive single-GPU graphics card yet, and yes, we feel GPU pricing has gotten out of hand, likely thanks to anyone who has bought a variant of the GeForce Titan. Priced alongside the GTX 980 Ti, the Fury X delivers competitive performance and due to its compact design using a liquid cooler, it also runs much cooler.

However the GTX 980 Ti is a significantly better overclocker, netting more than 20% extra performance, which is why it got the nod in our recent multi-GPU SLI vs. Crossfire review.

A month after announcing the Fury X, a second high-end Fiji GPU was unveiled, known simply as the Fury. Dropping the X meant 13% fewer stream processors and texture units were available, while the liquid cooler was dumped for a more traditional — albeit massive — heatpipe cooler. Those changes afforded a reduced MSRP of $550, 15% cheaper than the Fury X.

AMD says the Nano is a sort of co-flagship product with the R9 Fury X and therefore has given the Nano the same $650 MSRP.

The Fury is only 5% slower than the Fury X on average, creating a GTX Titan X/GTX 980 Ti situation where the Fury X became a bit pointless.

Although the Fury X was released 2+ months ago, buying one today is still next to impossible. Online retailers such as Newegg have been out of stock for weeks and only show models from Sapphire, Asus and VisionTek. The Fury can be purchased though just two models exist: the Asus R9 Fury STRIX and Sapphire R9 Fury Tri-X.

AMD has said it is «saving up quantities» of the Nano ahead of its launch in hope that supply will be sufficient to meet demand.

Meanwhile, there are more than three dozen GTX 980s to choose from and around two dozen GTX 980 Tis from half a dozen board partners.

Despite the lack of supply, AMD is moving forward with another Fiji GPU. The new Radeon R9 Nano is perhaps the most interesting Fiji GPU yet, which could be the very reason why you haven’t been able to buy a Fury X for weeks now.

AMD says the Nano is a sort of co-flagship product with the R9 Fury X and therefore has given the Nano the same $650 MSRP. AMD has said it is «saving up quantities» of the Nano ahead of its launch in hope that supply will be sufficient to meet demand.

Based on the fully fledged Fiji XT, the Nano gets the same 4096 stream processors as the Fury X, just in a much more compact package. The Nano measures only 6″ (152mm) long, made possible by the Fiji GPU’s modest power consumption and HBM. AMD hopes to enable 4K gaming in tiny Mini-ITX systems with the Nano.

The fact that all 4096 stream processors are enabled is shocking but what’s more impressive is the card’s 175w TDP rating, a full 100 watts less than the Fury X. It’s expected that the Nano will keep power consumption and temperatures in check through relaxed voltages and frequencies when compared to the Fury X.

The R9 Nano core is comprised of an incredible 8.9 billion transistors and because the 28nm process is still being used, the die measures a massive 596mm2. That said, if you include the 4GB of HBM then the die area measures 1011mm2. All told, the Nano features 44% more transistors than the 390X while the die is 36% larger.

In total, the Nano core features 4096 SPUs, 256 TAUs and 64 ROPs, 45% more SPU and TAUs than the 390X with the same amount of ROPs. The core is clocked at up to 1000MHz and it’s important to note the «up to». We suspect in order to meet the power targets the Nano will spend more time operating closer to 900MHz.

The HBM is clocked at just 500MHz (1.0Gbps) which is obviously much lower than the GDDR5 memory of the 390X. However, keep in mind that HBM memory features a bus width of 1024-bits per stack versus 32-bits of a GDDR5 memory chip. This means even at much lower clock speeds the wider bus allows HBM to deliver over 100GB/s per stack compared to 28GB/s per GDDR5 chip.

HBM comes at a cost of a little over 35GB/s per watt while GDDR5 offers just 10.6GB/s per watt.

As was the case with the Fury X and Fury, the key downside to HBM at this point is the 4GB capacity limitation, which could become a problem at ultra-high resolutions. However, AMD says those situations won’t matter much because the games most likely won’t be playable at those settings anyway. We tend to agree.

Apart from the obvious performance advantages and power savings, another key advantage to HBM technology is saving space as the DRAM dies are stacked on top of each other. For example 1GB of GDDR5 memory (comprised of four 256MB chips) requires roughly 672mm2 of space and using HBM technology that same 1GB needs only about 35mm2.

According to AMD, 9900mm2 of PCB is required for the 290X GPU and its associated memory, whereas less than 4900mm2 is used for the Fury X.

This then brings us to the key feature of the Nano. The board design which, like HBM, is unique in itself. Never before have we seen an ultra-high-end graphics card that measures less than 10″ in length. The Fury X was well under this at just 7.5″ but the Nano is even smaller again at just 6″ and most crucially doesn’t have a 120mm radiator and fan hanging off it.

The good news is that unlike the Fury X, the Nano is open for modification by board vendors, so we should see custom versions from the likes of HIS, Asus, Gigabyte and so on. AMD has also shared that some of its partners are prepping designs with water blocks for liquid cooling.

In the case of the Fury X, dissipating at least 275 watts of heat needs a serious cooler and instead of equipping a 13″ long heatsink and fan combo like they did with the standard Fury, AMD looked to the R9 295X2 for inspiration. The end result was an all-in-one liquid cooler that made the Fury X less compact than its 7.5″ PCB would suggest.

Dissipating 175 watts is a much easier task and in a limited space can be handled with air cooling. The Nano incorporates a dual vapor chamber and heatpipe solution to cool the GPU and HBM memory with a single fan. The thermal solution also incorporates a dedicated heat-pipe to cool the voltage regulators on the board.

An advantage to using 30% less power than the R9 290X is that the Nano only requires a single 8-pin PCIe power connector.

AMD claims that the Nano has a target GPU temperature of just 75°C and will typically operate at this temperature under load. This is 20°C cooler than the target operating temperature of the reference R9 290X.

In thermally constrained situations the Nano will allow the GPU temperature to rise above the target 75°C to its maximum 85° GPU temperature without compromising on fan acoustics or engine clocks. AMD also claims that the Nano will be «library quiet» at 42 dBA, 16 dBA quieter than the R9 290X.

The backside of the card doesn’t feature a backplate which will no doubt upset a few users, though for such a small graphics card we don’t feel a backplate is entirely necessary. Considering the card’s $550 price tag, we’re also a bit disappointed in the lack of a glowing Radeon logo which we thought was a nice touch on the Fury X.

Overall, the R9 Nano looks good but also relatively basic, so we’re excited to see what AMD’s board partners will come up with. The Nano’s tiny size is obviously its biggest draw and given its size we still can’t imagine it being anywhere near as fast as the Fury.

When AMD announced the Fury family of GPUs at E3 back in June, it promised that its new graphics hardware would ship in multiple high-end flavors. We’ve already covered the launch of the water-cooled, 7.5-inch Fury X and the larger, air-cooled Fury, but today’s announcement covers what was arguably the most interesting card of all — the six-inch Radeon R9 Nano. (The GPU was initially referred to as the AMD Radeon R9 Fury Nano, but AMD’s marketing folks realized that’s a bit of a mouthful).

It’s very small

AMD has set a high bar for the Nano, with some aggressive performance claims and a tight power envelope. Now that the company is formally revealing the card, let’s take a look at its specs and capabilities.

Positioning and specifications

The Fury Nano is aimed at customers who want an extremely small graphics card but aren’t willing to sacrifice performance. At six inches long, it’s exactly the size of a standard PCIe x16 port — AMD executives told us at E3 that they could’ve made the board even smaller, if not for that limitation. Size isn’t the only feature of the card, however. According to AMD, the Nano has a TDP of just 175W. The GPU’s power configuration confirms that; the Nano has a single eight-pin PCIe connector, compared to two eight-pin connectors on the standard Fury X.

Given its aggressive TDP target, one might expect AMD to have aggressively trimmed core counts and other features of the R9 Nano compared to the full Fury X. That’s not, however, what the company chose to do. Specs on the Radeon R9 Nano are shown below:

The R9 Nano is a full Fury X, only on a smaller PCB. The TDP difference between this card and its higher-power sibling can be explained by two things. First, AMD is using a lower core clock speed for the GPU. While the Nano is capable of bursting up to 1GHz in certain scenarios, we expect its real-world clock to be in the 850-880MHz range. This can vary by application, however, and we don’t have final silicon in-hand yet, so treat this as a ballpark.

You might not think that trimming a relatively modest 200-250MHz off the GPU core clock could slash power consumption by nearly 50%, but there’s reason to believe AMD’s figures. Generally speaking, power consumption in modern semiconductors rises as the square or cube of the voltage increase and in direct proportion to frequency. Since higher voltages are required for higher frequencies, this means that increasing the clock speed by a small amount can create a much larger increase in power consumption. AMD’s FX-9590 (5GHz Turbo) has a 220W TDP, compared to the FX-8350’s (4.2GHz Turbo) 120W TDP. A 19% increase in frequency requires an 1.83x increase in maximum dissipation. Intel CPUs suffer from similar trends, though the absolute figures are smaller, as we’ve previously covered.

The other reason that AMD can hit these power targets has to do with GPU binning. Any time AMD, Intel, or Nvidia builds a processor, they test the batch to determine which chips can operate at which frequency and voltage settings. While AMD didn’t specifically comment on its binning practices with Nano, it’s a safe bet that the company is reserving the very best of its Fiji GPUs for this product line.

As far as absolute performance is concerned, AMD is predicting that the Radeon Nano will deliver 30% more performance than the R9 290X in a fraction the space and 16dBA less noise.

AMD is projecting that the Radeon R9 Nano will compare extremely well against the GTX 970 Mini, as shown below:

After some of the issues surrounding the Fury X’s early benchmark leaks, many people will give these results a gimlet eye. According to the footnotes published in AMD’s presentation, Far Cry 4 was tested at 4K at the Ultra High preset with 0x MSAA and 0x AF. AMD used its own Catalyst 15.201 and compared against Nvidia’s 355.60 WHQL driver. All of the additional games were tested at High detail and 4K, with no MSAA or AF forced on or manually selected. FXAA was used in several titles, but it has a minimal impact on GPU performance.

Price, initial thoughts

AMD has announced that the Radeon R9 Nano will debut at $649, just like its highest-end Radeon R9 Fury X. If we take AMD’s claims of offering 30% more performance than the R9 290X at face value, it means that the R9 Nano should be within 10% of the Fury X in the majority of benchmarks. Factor in the card’s tiny form factor and 175W TDP, and it’s easy to see why AMD wants to put a premium on this card. There’s literally nothing like it on the market today.

AMD wants to put 4K-capable systems into living rooms — without writing it into your prenup.

By keeping the Nano at $649, however, AMD is also setting a very high bar for itself. Even if we assume that the R9 Nano beats the GTX the 30-40% estimates that the graphs show, that still leaves AMD charging almost twice as much for its premium solution. Again, we’ll have to wait for hardware to see if this is justified. At 175W, the R9 Nano still draws significantly more power than the GTX 970 Mini it compares against — though it would still win past Nvidia’s card in terms of performance per watt if AMD’s test results are accurate.

AMD will ship the card the week of September 7, which is when reviews should begin to roll as well. We’re very interested to see how this plays out.

    AMD Unveils $650 R9 Fury X And $550 R9 Fury

    AMD has officially launched its new Radeon lineup with Fury X, Fury, Fury Nano as well as the upcoming Radeon 300 series lineup here at E3. So they’re finally here the AMD Radeon Fury X and Fury, the graphics cards that everyone’s been anticipating. We also managed to see numerous 300 series graphics cards as well. The Fiji GPU, both the XT and Pro variants, form the foundation of AMD’s new ultra enthusiast «Fury» brand. There are several reasons as to why AMD decided to resurrect the «Fury» brand name with Fiji. Chief among which is that with Fiji AMD will be introducing the world’s first GPU featuring 3D stacked High Bandwidth Memory, otherwise known as HBM. Another reason is the sheer performance of the chip, which AMD has proclaimed to be the fastest in the world. To crown these achievements AMD decided that a simple numerical product name will not do this chip justice and thus will be bringing back the Fury brand name.

    AMD debuted a brand new card along with R9 Fury X and R9 Fury called Fury Nano. Which measures 6 inches long and is the fastest mini-itx graphics card in the world. It features a cut down fiji GPU ( Fiji LE ) with 4GB of HBM. AMD states that the card is faster than the R9 290X and has 2x the performance per watt of the R9 290X. So we may very well be looking at a graphics card that uses nearly half the power of the R9 290X.

    AMD also confirmed Fury and Fury X. Just like we said, Fury will feature Fiji Pro with air cooling. While Fury X will be the watercooled flagship featuring Fiji XT. AMD announced pricing for Fury X will be $650 and it will launch on June 24th. Fury is priced at $550 and it will launch on July 12th.

    Here are the specifications for AMD’s upcoming «ultra-enthusiast» Fury line of graphics cards. Powered by AMD’s largest, most powerful and most advanced GPU to date code named Fiji.

    Now let’s briefly talk about Fiji and it’s new secret weapon, HBM.
    HBM represents the revolutionary step that has been so badly needed in the evolution of graphics memory standards. The first generation of HBM promises to deliver 4.5X the bandwidth of GDDR5 and a staggering 16 times the bandwidth of DDR3.

    Both GDDR5 and DDR3 are eclipsed by the 128 GB/s figure for first generation HBM.
    The second generation promises to double the bandwidth by doubling the speed from 1Gbps to 2Gbps. While also quadrupling the memory capacity for 4-Hi stacks from 1GB to 4GB. HBM2 will be featured in AMD’s upcoming Arctic Islands graphics architecture with the “Greenland” flagship GPU.

    In our technical deep dive on Fiji we were able to draw a rough estimate of the Fiji’s performance based on the core count and the clock speed. But as we can’t yet quantify the performance benefit from HBM without rigorous testing we left it out of the equation. Even without putting HBM into the equation the estimated performance of Fiji XT is quite phenomenal.

    But they lack something else, Nick Parker understood. People lack suffering.
