Nvidia GTX 1660 vs 1060: Which is faster?

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 is finally a thing that exists, and what a neat thing it is, too. Available from just £200 / $220, it’s now pretty much exactly the same price as Nvidia’s existing 6GB GTX 1060, which until now has been one of my top recommendations over in my best graphics card list as to what you should actually buy for 1080p gaming if you’re looking to keep costs down and don’t mind settling for, say, High settings as opposed to Ultra.

But now that both graphics cards can be snapped up for the same amount of money, which one is actually worth buying? Let’s find out via the medium of some lovely graphs.

GTX 1660 vs GTX 1660 Ti: How we test

As with every comparison article I do, such as my GTX 1660 Ti vs GTX 1060 and GTX 1660 vs GTX 1660 Ti pieces, I’ve run each card through my general games benchmarking suite at 1920×1080 and 2560×1440 resolutions to see how they perform across different graphics quality settings. The aim, as always, is see what it takes to get a decent 60fps, and how far each card is able to stretch before things start to become too choppy for comfort.

The games in question include Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Monster Hunter: World, Metro Exodus, Final Fantasy XV (with Nvidia’s fancy HairWorks, TurfEffects, VXAO and ShadowLibs effects turned off), Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Total War: Warhammer II, Forza Horizon 4 and The Witcher III.

Paired with my Intel Core i5-8600K CPU and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance 2133MHz RAM, I’ve seen what each card can do on both High and Ultra settings at each resolution and taken an average frame rate (either from their own built-in benchmarks or from my own repeated manual gameplay tests) to see how they stack up against each other.

To aid us in our quest, I’ve got Gigabyte’s GeForce GTX 1660 OC and the 6GB Asus GeForce GTX 1060 OC 9Gbps edition. The Gigabyte is at the lowest £200 / $220 end of the GTX 1660 price spectrum, which should give us a pretty good baseline of what to expect from this type of card, but the Asus (which I should note isn’t actually available any more) used to be one of the nippier 6GB GTX 1060 around. As a result, the GTX 1060 figures are more of a best-case scenario for this card, and are probably about as good as it’s going to get compared to the cheapest GTX 1660s out there.

With that in mind, let’s graph it on up.

GTX 1660 vs GTX 1060: 1080p performance

Let’s start with how each card fares on Ultra settings at 1920×1080. In a lot of cases, you’re actually only looking at a difference of about 5-10fps here, which considering the GTX 1060’s age really isn’t too shabby for such an old card. There are a couple of more dramatic performance jumps, admittedly, such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider with the full brunt of its SMAA x4 anti-aliasing enabled and Forza Horizon 4, but on the whole both cards are pretty competent here, with the GTX 1060 offering at least 40fps in most cases and the GTX 1660 pushing that up closer to 50fps.

I should note that the GTX 1060 can still get a decent 60fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider on Highest as long as its regular SMAA anti-aliasing is enabled, but needless to say the GTX 1660 will get you the same kind of speed boost as you see in the graph above on the same settings.

Really, though, both of these cards are most comfortable on High at this resolution, as you can see from the graph below. I haven’t included Forza Horizon 4 and The Witcher III here because they were already well into 60fps territory back on Ultra, but the rest of my benchmarking suite are all pushing practically perfect speeds here, save Metro Exodus because that benchmark is one tough cookie to get running smoothly on its built-in High preset, the details of which you can find out more about in my Metro Exodus graphics performance guide.

Indeed, there’s just a single frame separating my two Assassin’s Creed Odyssey scores and only 5fps over in Metro. The GTX 1660 has the clear upper hand in games such as Monster Hunter: World, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Total War: Warhammer II, but you’ll only actually see that extra 10fps or so if you have a high refresh rate monitor at your disposal. Otherwise, you’ll just see the maximum 60fps on a regular 60Hz monitor, which is really no different to averages of 55fps or 57fps when you’re looking at them side by side.

The thing is, when the 6GB GTX 1060 now costs exactly the same as the GTX 1660, there isn’t really any reason why you shouldn’t just go for the GTX 1660. It would be a different thing entirely if the GTX 1660 was more expensive than the 6GB GTX 1060, but when you can pick them up for exactly the same amount of money these days, you’d have to have a very good reason indeed for picking the GTX 1060 over the newer GTX 1660.

GTX 1660 vs GTX 1060: 1440p performance

Indeed, the same thing’s true when you look at their 2560×1440 performance. While there’s hardly any difference between some games on Ultra settings, such as Total War: Warhammer II and Final Fantasy XV, the gains you get in others such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, for example, are just too big to ignore.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s result is particularly telling here, too. Unlike the graphs at 1080p, I’ve only used the regular SMAA x4 anti-aliasing at this resolution, because otherwise the GTX 1060 would slow to a crawl. Similarly, it was only by turning the settings right down to Low that I managed to get anywhere near 60fps with the GTX 1060 at this resolution. The GTX 1660, on the other hand, was hitting highs of 54fps on Highest, and I only had to lower the quality to High to push it into 60fps territory.

Admittedly, a rather strange thing happened when I dropped the quality down to High for everything else in my testing suite, as the GTX 1060 actually performed better than the GTX 1660 in both Final Fantasy XV and Total War: Warhammer II. We’re still only talking an average of a couple of frames difference, all told, but I’ll admit I was pretty surprised by the result nevertheless.

Again, though, this would only be of any significance if the GTX 1660 was a lot more expensive than the GTX 1060, but when both cards can be picked up for the same mount of money, it would be silly to hamper yourself with the otherwise inferior performance of the GTX 1060 just because it can run two games ever so slightly (and pretty much imperceptibly) faster than the GTX 1660.

GTX 1660 vs GTX 1060: Conclusion

As a result, I think the GTX 1660 is the clear winner here, despite the sometimes minuscule improvements (or even minor blips) to its overall performance. Not only is it more capable of hitting smoother frame rates on max settings at 1080p, but it’s also a lot more comfortable on High settings at 1440p than its 10-series predecessor. Sure, there might be times where they’re neck-and-neck, but when the GTX 1660 does pull ahead, it pulls ahead big time.

This verdict may well change if the GTX 1060 suddenly drops in value as a result of the GTX 1660’s release, but right now, anyone looking to buy a graphics card for 1080p should definitely have the GTX 1660 at the top of their list over the 6GB GTX 1060.

When comparing GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB and GeForce GTX 1660, we look primarily at benchmarks and game tests. But it is not only about the numbers. Often you can find third-party models with higher clock speeds, better cooling, or a customizable RGB lighting. Not all of them will have all the features you need. Another thing to consider is the port selection. Most graphics cards have at least one DisplayPort and HDMI interface, but some monitors require DVI. Before you buy, check the TDP of the graphics card — this characteristic will help you estimate the consumption of the graphics card. You may even have to upgrade your PSU to meet its requirements. There’s a new mainstream graphics card in town. The GTX 1660 Ti offers many of the same architectural advantages of Nvidia’s latest cards, but doesn’t include the specialised RT and Tensor cores you’ll find on the company’s RTX GPUs. Given the slow adoption of RTX series features like real-time ray tracing and deep learning super sampling (DLSS), giving up these technologies to hit a lower price point sounds like a winning formula.

However, at £260/$280, this new GPU still costs more than its predecessor, the GTX 1060, which launched at £240/$250 and has since dropped in price significantly — to around £170/$200. So, is it worth choosing the new model for 1080p gaming? And can either stretch to 1440p gaming?

That’s what we’ll answer here, as we compare these two affordable cards in terms of features, pricing and performance. We’ve tested each in nine separate games released over the past few years, so you’ll be able to see precisely what sort of frame-rates you can expect — and with our live benchmarks, you’ll be able to get an idea of any frame-time spikes too. GTX 1660 Ti vs GTX 1060: Feature comparison

Before we get stuck into the results, it’s worth briefly covering the feature differences between the GTX 1660 Ti and Pascal cards like the GTX 1060. As we already mentioned, the GTX 1660 Ti doesn’t include the specialised ray tracing and deep learning cores of the RTX series, so these features aren’t present on the GTX 1660 Ti. However, Turing cards do include new features that don’t rely on its specialist cores, and these have made the jump to the GTX 1660 Ti.

One of the most interesting is variable rate shading, a new technique which reduces detail in areas of the screen that are of less interest to the player or can’t easily be seen — for example, areas in shadow. Opting for minimal processing in these areas can boost performance by a good margin, but developers need to add support for the technology for it to work. The first title to support the tech is Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus with frame-rates rising by about 15 per cent at best. Another nice feature is the upgraded NVENC encoder on the GTX 1660 Ti, which is more CPU-efficient than its predecessor and also supports more video codecs for streaming or recording gameplay footage.

Unsurprisingly, features that debuted on the GTX 1060 persist onto the GTX 1660 Ti as well. That includes G-Sync monitors, and after a recent software update both cards can also work with FreeSync monitors. In the GeForce Experience and Nvidia Control Panel software, you’ll also find options for multi-display gaming, streaming to Android devices and so on. The GTX 1660 Ti has the feature advantage then, but it’s a much tighter race than it is between the GTX 1060 and RTX cards.

Now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for: we’ll see exactly how these GPUs compare in some of the best recent games. We have included 1080p and 1440p results here only, as there’s no expectation for 4K gaming on either card — and both are best at 1080p.

Our GTX 1660 Ti card is a one-fan PNY XLR8 model, while the GTX 1060 is a 6GB Founders Edition model. The GTX 1660 Ti XLR8 comes with a small 45MHz overclock over reference speeds, while the Nvidia card remains stock. As there is no reference card for the GTX 1660 Ti, this is a fair comparison of how the two compare out of the box, but just keep in mind that overclocked versions of both cards exist and performance can vary slightly depending on the clocks you can sustain.

Our tests were performed using a high-end rig built around a Core i7-8700K processor, overclocked to 4.7GHz on all cores to minimise the times we were CPU-bound. Other specs for our test system include 16GB of dual-channel memory running at 3400MHz, a Corsair h200i liquid AiO cooler and solid state storage for all tested games. Fairly obviously, if your system has a weaker processor, your in-game results may be slightly worse than ours; we recommend a recent Core i5, Core i7 or Ryzen 7 processor to get the most out of your PC.

Note that we’ve only included the two cards we’re most interested in here: the GTX 1660 Ti and the GTX 1060 6GB. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

We begin with one of our most recent benchmark titles, 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The game’s sprawling vistas and detailed textures can put any card through its paces, and it’s clear to see the generational advantage possessed by the GTX 1660 Ti. The new card almost manages 60fps at the game’s highest graphical preset, while the GTX 1060 can’t reach 40fps at 1080p. At 1440p, it’s the GTX 1660 Ti that manages 40fps, while the GTX 1060 is constrained to a console-quality 30fps. At 1080p, the gap between the two cards is a solid 34 per cent, rising to 41 per cent at 1440p.

Assassin’s Creed Unity

Unity is an older Assassin’s Creed title, having been released in 2014, but it remains a challenging title. We’re looking at around a 35 per cent advantage for the GTX 1660 Ti once again, but this time both GPUs are able to maintain at least a 60fps average at 1080p. At 1440p, the GTX 1660 Ti is still a few settings changes away from 60fps, but the GTX 1060 has to make do with a result in the high thirties.

Battlefield 1

Battlefield 1 is the first title where we see both cards able to meet 60fps at 1440p, which is an impressive result given the cost of the GTX 1060 6GB. The GTX 1660 Ti brings the game into high refresh rate monitor territory with a 122fps average at 1080p, while the GTX 1060 hits 87fps at the same resolution. Here, the advantage for the GTX 1660 Ti is 40 per cent at both resolutions.

Crysis 3

Another card, another generation and another year of using Crysis in our benchmarks. This 2013 title just keeps giving, and looking at the results here it’s clear that only the latest generation has truly tamed this game at 1440p. The GTX 1660 Ti is more than 30 per cent clear of its competition here, delivering more than 100fps at 1080p and in excess of 60fps at 1440p. Meanwhile, the GTX 1060 makes do with just over 60fps at 1080p and nearly 50fps at 1440p.

Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 is one of the least challenging games in our benchmark suite, despite having been released just last year. The GTX 1060 6GB manages to exceed 60fps at 1080p, while the GTX 1660 Ti pushes its advantage to 37 per cent. At 1440p, only the new card manages to deliver a 60fps average or better.

Ghost Recon Wildlands

The ultra graphics setting in Ghost Recon Wildlands isn’t intended for use by real human beings in normal gameplay; it’s the kind of punishing preset that seems tailor-made to break your GPU in half even at modest resolutions. Neither of our cards manages to hit 60fps here, even at 1080p, while the 1440p results are closer to 30fps. The GTX 1660 Ti’s advantage remains consistent at around 33 per cent.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

That 33 per cent advantage for the GTX 1660 Ti persists into Rise of the Tomb Raider, the first of two TR titles we’ve included in our benchmarks. We would expect even the GTX 1060 to manage at least 60fps at 1080p though, and the card duly delivers a result closer to 80fps on average while the GTX 1660 Ti closes in on 110fps. At 1440p, the GTX 1660 Ti manages nearly 70fps, while the GTX 1060 must content itself with a sub-60fps average.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Our second Tomb Raider title is the 2018 release, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The benchmark is a better simulcrum of real gameplay than that of its predecessor, and unsurprisingly offers a stiffer challenge for both cards. We’re looking at the biggest advantage we’ve seen yet for the GTX 1660 Ti here, with the new card outperforming the GTX 1060 6GB by a staggering 47 per cent at 1080p. However, this does drop to a more consistent 30 per cent at 1440p, where both cards fall below 60fps on average.

The Witcher 3

Our final title is The Witcher 3, where we take a Roach-bound jaunt through one of the biggest cities in the Northern Kingdoms. The GTX 1060 just about manages to exceed a 60fps average at 1080p, even with the punishing Nvidia Hairworks tech turned off. The GTX 1660 Ti runs away with the show though, with a 45 per cent lead at 1080p and 40 per cent advantage at 1440p.

Generational comparison

We conclude with a look at how the GTX 1660 Ti compares to its predecessors in one of our longest-running benchmarks, Assassin’s Creed Unity, at 1080p. It’s impressive to see how the GTX 1660 Ti beats out the GTX 980 Ti, which launched at more than double the price four years ago and wipes the floor with the GTX 780 Ti that cost even more six years ago.

GTX 1660 Ti vs GTX 1060: Price and availability

Having extra performance is great, but you’ve got to pay for it. In the case of the GTX 1660 Ti, things are pretty straightforward right now, with the cards going for dead on their RRP: £260 in the UK and $280 in the US. There are a range of configurations available, but we recommend an entry-level model as these provide the most bang for the buck. Premium GTX 1660 Ti models offer better thermals and faster clocks, but their prices start to creep very close to RTX 2060 cards which offer significantly better performance. Even at the low end, most cards come with small overclocks built in, but we recommend sticking with a brand you trust or the form factor that makes sense for your build instead of going by raw clock speeds.

How does the GTX 1060 stack up? Right now, the cheapest we’ve spotted the GTX 1060 for is £170 in the UK and $200 in the US. That means you’re paying an extra £90 or $80, respectively. Given the around 40 per cent uptick in performance you can expect, this could well make sense — especially if you’re able to sell on your old card. However, if you’re building a system afresh, then it makes sense to consider how long you want your PC to last before needing another upgrade and what kind of frame-rates you expect to get. The GTX 1660 Ti will definitely provide more staying power than the GTX 1060, but the premium you pay is significant. Ultimately, the decision is yours — but we recommend the newer card for most people.

LET’S GET INTO RESULTS.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends was tested in campaign mode. In this test GTX 1660 is the clear winner. At 1440p, there was 5.1% diference and 12% diiference at 1080p.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

In Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the GTX 1660 is ahead, with a 7.8% higher average frame rate at 1080p, rising slightly to a 12% lead at 1440p.

Battlefield V

Battlefield V was tested using the games built in benchmark tool, and the GTX 1660 was almost 14% faster at 1080p, and this increased up to a 16% lead at 1440p.

Counter Strike: GO

Counter Strike: GO was tested in campaign mode. There was not too much difference between both cards but still 1660 was ahead. At 1080p, the difference was just 1FPS and stepping up to 1440p, now the difference was 5FPS.

Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 was tested with the games benchmark tool. With almost an 8% higher average FPS at 1080p and 12% at 1440p.

Far Cry New Dawn

There was less of a difference observed in Far Cry New Dawn, which was tested with all graphical settings set to high Settings. At 1080p there was just a 11% higher average FPS with the 1660, and this increased to 12% higher frame rate at 1440p.

Fortnite

Fortnite was tested using the replay feature, with the exact same replay file used for all testing. The results were a little strange here, 1660 was a little ahead, though realistically most of the results were so close together it’s within margin of error, regardless the performance was very similar.

Metro Exodus

Metro Exodus was tested with the game’s benchmark tool, and there was a bit more of a difference this time around, with the 1660 coming out 8% faster at 1080p, and there was a larger 11% boost at 1440p. I have to say that both the graphics card were not performing well at 1080p.

Rainbow Six Siege

Rainbow Six Siege was tested using the built in benchmark, and there was 22% at 1080p. At 1440p however, the 1660 was able to hit an average frame rate 23% ahead of the 1060.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was tested in the practice range, so while not quite the same as actual gameplay, it allows me to perform the same test pass more accurately which is ideal for comparison purposes. At 1080p the 1660 was almost 15% higher than the 1060, then at 1440p it had less than a 18% lead.

CONCLUSION

In general, the newest 1660 seems worth picking and is what I’d go for today especially given it performs better too.

If you’ve already got a 1060 6GB, is it worth upgrading to the 1660? I think it depends on the game but in general, not really, as you’re only getting a 13% improvement on average.

NVIDIA introduced the GTX 1660 SUPER at the end of October, and immediately allowed partners to sell their modifications. It is based on the TU116-300 GPU, created on the basis of the 12-nm Turing microarchitecture with a number of related technologies in the form of simultaneous operations with integer and fractional numbers, a unified cache structure and support for Adaptive Shading.

A similar GPU version uses the GTX 1660. Not only do they have the same number of CUDA cores, texture and raster units, but even the frequencies have not changed. The performance bonus is achieved solely by switching from GDDR5 memory to GDDR6 memory with increased frequency and bandwidth. TDP new items increased by only 5 watts.

The main role this time went to the model Palit GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER GamingPro OC . It boasts a factory overclocked GPU dynamic frequency up to 1830 MHz. Cooling is provided by a dual-slot cooler with two copper heat pipes, an aluminum heatsink, and two 86mm fans.

Not without a simple LED backlight, and the set of external interfaces has DisplayPort, HDMI and DVI. The length of the video card does not exceed 250 mm — there should be no problems with its installation in conventional cases.

Now let’s imagine the opponents. Since we have a 1660 SUPER with factory overclocking, then the competitors were taken with factory overclocking. The first in line is the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1660 OC . She received a 6-phase power subsystem, similar GPU clock speeds and a dual-slot WINDFORCE 2X cooling system with one copper heat pipe, two 87 mm fans, an aluminum radiator and a stiffening plate on the back.

Be sure to compare the new product with the nominally more powerful GeForce GTX 1660 Ti , in this case also from GIGABYTE. It received a similar design and cooling system, but is based on a GPU with support for 1536 CUDA cores and higher clock speeds. It also uses GDDR6 memory, but with an effective frequency of 12 GHz.

AMD has no external competitor for the 1660 SUPER in the Navi line yet. While she bet on the RX 590 by lowering its retail price and gifts from the Raise the Game promotion. Surely this will interest someone, and we have added SAPPHIRE NITRO + Radeon RX 590 Special Edition to the comparison. In addition to the spectacular appearance and GPU overclocking, it boasts video memory overclocking and an efficient DUAL-X cooler with 4 heat pipes and two 95mm fans.

The last participant in the main test is the SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon RX Vega 56 .     Before the tests, we would like to draw your attention to one very important point! In the process, each benchmark is run several times — abnormally high or low values ​​are discarded, and on the graphs you see the average results. This avoids random misses, as, for example, in Borderlands 3 — in one of the passes, very rare events dropped to 18 FPS, and in the rest they were around 30 fps.

    Now let’s start with a mini comparison with the 6GB GTX 1060. In Far Cry New Dawn at maximum settings, the new product produces more than 60 FPS in all three indicators, which GTX2 cannot boast of 1066.

    Switching to DirectX 12 in Shadow of the Tomb Raider doesn’t make much of a difference. At the maximum preset, the results of 1660 SUPER are 36-39 better%.

    In Gears 5 on ultras in the same API, the difference is reduced to 28-33%, but this is a very good indicator. The GTX 1066 statistics point to the possibility of getting playable gameplay, and with the 1660 SUPER you can already count on a comfortable frame rate.

    And let’s take a look at how things are in Vulkan on the example of World War Z at ultra settings. The difference between the results is reduced to 20-33%, but without a change of leader and without any chance of a fight.

    On average, the GTX 1660 SUPER outperforms the GTX 1066 by 28-34%. We see a similar picture in NVIDIA’s internal tests. That is, we can safely confirm that the new product can really be considered as a replacement for a representative of the Pascal family with the ability to see the difference by eye.

    Main test opens benchmark World of Tanks encore 0511 RT with ray tracing on ultra settings. It does not require special hardware blocks to accelerate ray tracing, but so far it is better optimized for NVIDIA graphics cards than for AMD. For example, the GTX 1660 SUPER is at least 27% faster than the Vega 56.
