You can have different attitudes to different esports disciplines, MMO and MOBA games, but numbers are a stubborn thing. And they show, for example, that 9of the top 10 top-grossing PC games of 2015, according to SuperData Research, are relatively undemanding multiplayer games, many of which are nominally free. Here are the ten:

    1. League of Legends (Tencent/Riot Games) − $1.628 billion
    2. CrossFire (SmileGate) − $1.110 billion
    3. Dungeon Fighter Online (Neople) — $1.052 billion
    4. World of Warcraft (Activision) — $814 million
    5. World of Tanks (Wargaming.net) — $446 million
    6. Lineage I (NCSoft Corporation) − $339 million
    7. Maplestory (Nexon) — $253 million
    8. Dota 2 (Valve Corporation) − $238 million
    9. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (Valve Corporation) — $221 million
    10. Grand Theft Auto V (Take-Two Interactive) — $205 million

According to the latest rating for 2016 (from January to October), the TOP 10 is as follows:

    1. League of Legends
    2. CrossFire
    3. World of Warcraft
    4. Dungeon Fighter Online
    5. Sid Meier’s Civilization VI
    6. Overwatch
    7. Battlefield 1
    8. World of Tanks
    9. Dota 2
    10. Fantasy Westward Journey Online II

Unfortunately, in the new rating SuperData Research analysts did not indicate digital profitability indicators, but even without this it is clear that successful MMO and MOBA games generate super profits for their creators from year to year, while the main income is producers of the usual story games. games are received only at the time of their launch. On the one hand, this pushes developers to look for new ideas for releasing their own products in the niche of online projects. On the other hand, entry-level gaming video cards will continue to be very popular among users, because they are not only used in home systems, but also in various kinds of Internet cafes and gaming clubs. And many users don’t need more, if only after work or study for an hour or two to immerse themselves in their favorite world of magic, counter-terrorist operations, tanks or ships. nine0003

In this regard, in the fall of this year, NVIDIA has almost completed the transfer of the gaming video card model range to the NVIDIA Pascal microarchitecture. The latest to debut budget video accelerators NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. Calling less powerful graphics adapters «gaming» can only be a stretch, and with the release of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, she is in no hurry for two reasons. Firstly, AMD does not have a worthy competitor in the market, and secondly, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 is already selling well, so there is no need to create an internal competitor for it. nine0003

This review is dedicated specifically to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050. Nominally, it replaced the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 and is positioned as the optimal solution for a variety of MMOs, MOBAs, eSports disciplines and other undemanding projects. That is, AMD Radeon RX 460 will be its main competitor.0631

If you take a closer look at the predecessor, the first thing that catches your eye is the transfer of the GPU to a thinner process technology (from 28 to 14 nm), which made it possible to increase the number of transistors by 76% while reducing the area by 11%. As a result, the number of CUDA cores increased from 512 to 640, texture units — from 32 to 40, raster modules — from 16 to 32. Additionally, the amount of GDDR5 memory increased (from 1 to 2 GB) and clock frequencies increased significantly.

    Packaging and delivery

The colorful packaging of ASUS Expedition GeForce GTX 1050 will tell the potential owner about all the key features of the novelty except for the frequency formula. Particular attention should be paid to the possibility of activating the World of Warships invite code until January 30, 2017 to receive the premium cruiser Diana and 15 days of premium access.

Manufacturer’s recommended system requirements are printed on one side. In particular, the power of the power supply should not fall below 300 watts. But an additional PCIe power connector is not required, since the power consumption of the video card does not exceed 75 watts. nine0003

Delivery includes paper documentation and driver CD.

    Appearance

The ASUS EX-GTX1050-2G is made in a rather compact case with declared dimensions of 212 x 111 x 38 mm (222 x 111 mm according to its own measurements), which makes it a welcome guest in many small cases . And the design in black and red colors can be called classic for a video card of a gaming level.

We weren’t allowed to look inside the graphics adapter, but we can say that it uses a reference 3+1-phase power subsystem, selected Super Alloy Power II components and automated technology from ASUS AUTO-Extreme Technology. The high reliability and stability of the ASUS Expedition GeForce GTX 1050 in conditions close to the operation of computer clubs and Internet cafes was confirmed by iCafé Labs during a rigorous 144-hour test.

The reverse side of the video card is not covered with a stiffening plate. Firstly, the heat dissipation of the GPU is relatively small, so an installed cooling system should be enough to cool it. Secondly, the cooler itself is characterized by compact dimensions and low weight, so you shouldn’t worry about the breakage of the textolite. nine0003

The new product does not require an additional power connector, since its power consumption does not exceed 75 W provided by the PCI Express x16 interface.

You should also not count on the presence of a connector for connecting an NVIDIA SLI bridge, since this technology is not available for all representatives of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 series. In turn, the set of external interfaces includes the following ports:

    • 1 x DVI-D
    • nine0019 1 x HDMI 2.0b

    • 1 x DisplayPort 1.4

NVIDIA recommends that partners use a set of three DisplayPorts, one HDMI, and one DVI. However, the absence of two DisplayPorts is not particularly problematic, since the ASUS EX-GTX1050-2G is not aimed at either VR or multi-screen configurations.

GPU-Z utility confirms all parameters of this video accelerator familiar to us. In particular, the NVIDIA GP107-300 graphics processor includes 640 CUDA cores, 40 texture units and 32 raster units. The base frequency of its operation is 1354 MHz, and the dynamic frequency is 1455 MHz. In turn, the video memory is recruited using SK Hynix GDDR5 chips with a total capacity of 2 GB. The effective clock frequency of its operation is 7008 MHz, which, with a 128-bit bus, gives a throughput of 112.1 GB / s. nine0003

There are no additional factory overclocked profiles in the ASUS GPU Tweak II utility.

    Cooling system

The cooling system for ASUS Expedition GeForce GTX 1050 (EX-GTX1050-2G) graphics card has a fairly simple design. It consists of an aluminum radiator (173 x 78 x 18 mm) and two 75 mm axial fans mounted on a plastic casing. The radiator contacts only the GPU, but the memory chips and elements of the power subsystem are devoid of any additional cooling. nine0003

ASUS GPU Tweak II utility was used to check the efficiency of the cooling system. With automatic fan speed control, at maximum load, the graphics core heated up to 60 ° C, and the propellers themselves worked virtually silently at 34% (1159 rpm) of their maximum power.

Running the game DOOM (2016) with the cooler running in automatic mode led to GPU heating only up to 61°C at almost the same speed of rotation of the blades (1196 rpm). However, the frequency of the GPU has increased significantly compared to the test in the benchmark: from 1405 to 1658 MHz. It’s nice to see that the cooling system coped with such an increase without any problems.

Forced setting of the blades rotation speed to maximum (3342 rpm) ensured that the GPU temperature dropped to 47°C, but the noise rose slightly above average and was not very comfortable for constant use. Recall that the maximum declared temperature for NVIDIA GP107-300 is 97°C, that is, there is a good margin for overclocking experiments.

In the absence of load, the frequencies of the graphics core and memory were automatically reduced, allowing to reduce power consumption and heat dissipation of the video accelerator as a whole. In this mode, the GPU temperature did not exceed 29 ° C, and the fans were temporarily turned off. They resumed active work only when the temperature rose to 55°C.

Thus, there were no questions about the efficiency of the cooling system of the ASUS EX-GTX1050-2G video card: the GPU temperature was kept much below the critical level, no extraneous sounds in the form of a high-frequency squeak of chokes were noticed, and when the fans were running automatically, the noise level remained more than comfortable. Yes, we could not check the heating of the memory chips and the VRM zone, but during testing, the new product worked stably, and monitoring did not show any problems.
