Hands-On: NVIDIA’s New GTX 780 Ti Gaming in 4K

Earlier this year NVIDIA released a new lineup of 700-series desktop GPUs with the GeForce GTX 780 taking the “flagship” position in this exciting new product family. Today, NVIDIA has expanded the capabilities of the GeForce GTX 780 with the introduction of the new GeForce GTX 780 Ti GPU. The GTX 780 Ti is available today at a starting price of $699.

The GeForce GTX 780 Ti pushes NVIDIA’s PC gaming capabilities to the next level and also includes many refinements and support for the latest gaming technologies. In this article, I’ll outline the specs and capabilities of this new GPU and also share experiences running the GTX 780 Ti with EA’s Battlefield 4 (BF4) at 1080p, WQHD, and 4K Ultra HD screen resolutions. The GTX 780 Ti is an exciting new piece of gaming hardware as you’ll see in this article.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Specs

Since the GTX 780 Ti is an enhanced version of the GTX 780, let’s take a quick look at the side by side specs for both of these cards and quantify the improvements:

With 25% more cores running even faster than the GTX 780, this new GPU builds nicely on the capabilities of the previous top gaming GPU from NVIDIA. I ran GPU-Z on my test gaming system to check out all of the detailed specs for the GTX 780 Ti:

On the inside, this is an amazing piece of gaming technology. On the outside, my reference card was definitely nice on the eyes, with typical reverse illuminated GEFORCE GTX lettering on the side:

The GTX 780 Ti is designed to be both faster AND more efficient than previous NVIDIA gaming GPUs. Even with over 25% more horsepower and faster memory, the GTX 780 retains the 250W TDP of the GTX 780. This means you won’t need to worry about upgrading your power supply if you upgrade from the GTX 780 to the GTX 780 Ti. The GTX 780 Ti incorporates the latest thermal efficiency advancements from NVIDIA so that graphics horsepower can co-exist with optimized acoustics for quiet operation even when this GPU is pushed to the max. My GTX 780 Ti installed in just about 60 seconds thanks to the available 6-pin and 8-pin connectors I had available in my gaming PC. In this time I took out the GTX 760 and had the GTX 780 Ti installed and ready to boot the PC. I couldn’t wait to see what the performance would be like!

Gaming With the GTX 780 Ti

In order to test the performance of the GTX 780 Ti, I decided to use one of the latest and hottest PC games out there: EA’s Battlefield 4 (BF4).

BF4 is an amazing FPS game that showcases the latest in DirectX graphics

The tests I ran were quite simple, I ran BF4 at three different resolutions, running each resolution at Medium, High, and Ultra graphics settings.

Here are the basic specs for the PC gaming rig I used:

  • OS: Windows 8. 1 x64
  • CPU: Intel Core i7 950 3.06 GHz
  • RAM: 24GB GSKIL F3-10666CL9T2-24GBRL
  • Boot drive: Corsair Force 240GB SSD

BF4 @ 1920×1080

A ton of people game at 1080p resolution, so I thought I would start my tests there. The GTX 780 Ti is overkill for one 1080p display as you can see in the following side-by-side FRAPs FPS numbers:

BF4 @ 2560×1440

PC gaming at 2560×1440 resolution is a good “sweet spot” for graphics experience and value for the dollar. DirectX games look amazing on these displays, and you can get one (or more) of these displays without breaking the bank. BF4 looks and plays awesome with the GTX 780 Ti, but I knew I wouldn’t be satisfied until I pushed the resolution to 4K!

I discovered that the GTX 780 Ti can handle BF4 in a single-GPU/card config no problem. At medium settings, BF4 was North of the 60 FPS boundary that I consider to be the threshold of meaningful human perception. To see what would happen, I turned graphics setting up to ultra, and still was able to get 30 FPS. Amazing!

Conclusion

Introduction


When I wrote our first “4K Gaming Showdown” article, nearly 6 months ago, the article was very popular among our readers. However, one of the most common pieces of feedback I received was something to the tune of: “As 4K monitors are so expensive most people who would be buying a 4K monitor will also probably be going with SLI or CrossFire of high end graphics cards, can you test that too?”. To a large extent I agree with that idea, of course there are cheaper 4K monitors out there but most of the good quality 60Hz ones (which you really need for a fluid gaming experience) still cost thousands of dollars, if you’re willing to spend thousands of dollars on a monitor then you would be likely to spend a similar amount on GPUs. I’ve therefore taken this as an opportunity to see what SLI and CrossFire bring to the table for (60Hz) 4K gaming – as requested by our readers. In this article we will be doing a “smackdown” of Nvidia GTX 780 Ti SLI against AMD R9 290X SLI in a variety of games. Based on specified MSRPs the GTX 780 Ti SLI ($699 x 2) is a much more expensive option than the AMD R9 290Xs ($549 x 2) but with recent (mining induced) inflationary pricing on AMD R9 290X graphics cards the pricing is actually a lot closer than you might think and so it begs the question – which combination should you choose for the best 4K Gaming experience?

As you can see above we have a rather complicated mix of cards – sadly we do not have two identical cards for each GPU. That said we will both running all cards at reference clocks for the respective GPUs and the solitary reference graphics card, the Nvidia GTX 780 Ti, will be set to maximum fan speed to prevent thermal throttling as it is the only card out of the four where cooling is a limiting factor. With those modifications made we have 2 reference speed R9 290Xs and 2 reference speed GTX 780 Tis all able to performance at their maximum potential without any thermal throttling. Without any further ado let’s get on with looking at the monitor, the performance and my thoughts on 4K with dual GPUs.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 was officially announced in May 2013. She did not live on the market for so long — in September 2014 she was taken out of the sale so as not to interfere with the promotion of the next generation. However, it is still supported at the driver level.

It is based on the 28nm NVIDIA GK110 GPU. It includes 2304 CUDA cores, 192 texture units and 48 raster units. The base reference frequency is 863 MHz and the dynamic is at level 900 MHz.

Paired with it, 3 GB of RAM works, although in the spring of 2014 6 GB options appeared. In any case, the effective frequency is 6 GHz, and the throughput is 288 GB / s with a 384-bit bus.

The GeForce GTX 780 was not expected to innovate much, as it uses a slightly updated Kepler microarchitecture, which first debuted in the GeForce GTX 600 series cards. its main competitor in the form of the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition.

We will explore the possibilities using the reference version NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 as an example. It uses a 6-phase power subsystem and a dual-slot cooler. Its design consists of an evaporation chamber, a small aluminum heatsink and a compact radial fan. It directs the airflow along the PCB and pushes it out of the case.

Despite the simplicity of the design, the cooler is able to maintain the GPU dynamic frequency at 1000 MHz. True, for this you will have to take earplugs and headphones with good sound insulation, since the reference turbine is very noisy at maximum rotational speed.

You can reduce the turntable frequency by 2 times to get a comfortable noise level, but then the GPU speed drops to the declared 900 MHz. Accordingly, the speed indicators are also reduced. For tests, we used a compromise: we manually raised the cooler frequency to 75-80% so that the GPU could work at 1000 MHz in games, and the neighbors with a punch did not come to complain about the noise.

The following stand was used for testing:

An external system with AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K was used to record gameplay in Full HD resolution, that is, without loss of performance.

In DOTA 2 at maximum settings we decided to watch skilled players. When several heroes collide and spells are actively used, very rare events sink into the region of 30 frames / s. The rest of the problems were not noticed.

In World of Tanks managed to win a tough fight at ultra settings thanks to a comfortable framerate without freezes and stators. The average speed has risen above 80 FPS. Only emotions blocked the path to victory, but experience came to the rescue in a critical situation.

In War Thunder with the Kino profile, I remember only a short drawdown of very rare events below 40 FPS and an arriving one-shot. We can’t say anything else bad.

ARK Survival Evolved was played twice: first with the settings, and then in the game itself. More or less pleasant gameplay turned out with medium parameters, but with manual selection of the quality of the sky and the level of detail. The average speed rose under 70 FPS, but there were some stators.

The most difficult thing in RUST is to choose the graphics settings so that the picture pleases and the video does not freeze. With the N-th attempt, we succeeded. There were no critical drawdowns, even if you run aimlessly. But for this, you must have more than 10 GB of RAM in stock.

Insurgency : Sandstorm at a high preset pleases with good speed around 60 FPS, but upsets with friezes. So I had to go down to the middle profile. And then there were no questions to the gameplay — you can target opponents even at long distances.

B CS : GO Danger Zone runs mostly at low settings. In this mode, there were no problems with the video sequence, but the video card was loaded by 80%. Therefore, we asked the engine to choose the optimal parameters so that it cools less. As a result, 165 FPS without friezes and hitches.

In Quake Champions chose a high preset and manually lowered the quality of the textures to the average level so as not to exceed the amount of available video memory. The pleasure of the gameplay can only spoil the skillful actions of opponents. Yes, and at the moment of the death of the hero, very rare events fall into the region of 30 FPS, but this is no longer important.

PUBG with a folk mix of low and ultra settings ran without brakes and glitches with video or control. On average, you can count on 90 fps. While running, 0.1% Low stats are within 45 FPS. We change to a motorcycle, and it falls in the region of 30 frames / s.

If your hands do not prevent you from sitting on your buttocks evenly, then you can play and enjoy Fortnite even with the epic preset. The average speed exceeds the comfortable level. The rest of the statistics also do not sink much.

When launching Apex Legends we let the game adjust its graphics settings on its own. Basically, the engine chose medium-high settings so as not to go beyond the available 3 GB of video memory. As a result, the picture turned out to be pretty, the video sequence is smooth, and the controls are responsive. We don’t need more.

Frankly pleased Strange Brigade : with the ultra preset, she gave out a completely comfortable gameplay. There is nothing to complain about: even the consumption of RAM was minimal, so let’s move on.

The holiday feeling continues in Rainbow Six Siege . All that is required is to select a high preset, turn on the reaction and gently trim the hands with a hammer — the system will do the rest on its own.

Wolfenstein II decided that 3 GB of video memory was not enough for her for the average profile, although earlier with the GTX 1063 she did not issue any warnings in the settings. The engine did not make a mistake, and in the process the stators really slipped, which is noticeable by the sagging statistics of 1 and 0.1% Low. Evil 2 is a very voracious game and we had to limit its appetite to the recommended settings. The result is a completely balanced gameplay with an acceptable picture, smooth video sequence and predictable controls.

Assassin s Creed Odyssey is playable at medium profile. The frame rate is not exorbitant, but pleasant, without drawdowns and friezes. There were no glitches in management either. A good result for a 6-year-old video card.

But The Division 2 is misleading. If you look only at the monitoring, then with an average preset we see a playable picture: the average speed is under 50, the rest of the statistics are around 30 fps. But the feeling of the game is not so joyful: in the process there were stators in previously unexplored locations. Therefore, playable gameplay can be called a stretch.
