    The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and GeForce GTX 1050 are the latest additions to NVIDIA’s new Pascal graphics series. In a separate article, we reviewed the junior GeForce GTX 1050 card and compared it with the Radeon RX 460. Now let’s take a closer look at the older version, compare both cards with solutions from the previous series, with competitors from AMD and representatives of a higher level.

    The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and GeForce GTX 1050 are based on the GP107 GPU, which is NVIDIA’s first 14nm chip. The GP107 processor has two graphics clusters with three multiprocessors each. This structure is close to GM206 (GeForce GTX 960/950), although the total number of computing units is less. GP107 operates 768 CUDA cores, 48 ​​TMUs and 32 ROPs. The memory bus is 128 bits, new data compression algorithms in the Pascal architecture increase the efficiency of such a bus.

    The full potential of the processor is unleashed in the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, this video card offers the entire set of computing units with a base core frequency of 1290 MHz and a Boost Clock of 1392 MHz. At the same time, the Ti version is equipped with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory with an effective frequency of 7 GHz. The GeForce GTX 1050 got a GPU with one disabled SM, so the capabilities of the younger model are represented by 640 CUDA cores and 40 texture units. The operating frequencies of the core are 1354/1455 MHz, the memory operates at a frequency of 7 GHz, its volume is reduced to 2 GB.

    GeForce GTX 1050 series video cards are designed to be the best solution for eSports games, but their potential should be enough for AAA projects, although you won’t have to rely on maximum quality. With double the memory and more compute units, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti has the best potential for today’s games. What are the real differences between the younger and older video cards, testing will show. At the same time, we compare the new items with the GeForce GTX 960 and GeForce GTX 950, some models from AMD. All of them will be tested at nominal and overclocked, which will allow us to fully assess the potential of each model. Well, first, let’s take a brief look at the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti by MSI.

    MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GAMING X 4G

    Comes in a medium-sized red box, which is unusual for NVIDIA products, but has already become a corporate style for MSI models.

    This card fully corresponds to its status and looks no worse than other representatives of the MSI GAMING line. Equipped with solid cooling, a single design is sustained. Illumination has been implemented — red teeth on the right side of the case and a small logo on the side.

    The cooler occupies two expansion slots and is equipped with a pair of 90mm fans. The design uses a single thick heat pipe with direct contact technology with the GPU die. This tube bends and penetrates the radiator fins on both sides of the base.

    One of the screws on the cooling system is protected by a warranty seal. In this case, we did not have the opportunity for a complete analysis, so we confine ourselves to an external examination.

    MSI GTX 1050 Ti GAMING X 4G also features a full-format PCB with high-quality components and three-phase GPU power. Four gigabytes of memory are typed in GDDR5 chips from Samsung.

    The video card is equipped with three connectors — DisplayPort, HDMI and DVI, without analog interfaces.

    All GAMING models run at higher frequencies, and the presence of the letter X means the maximum factory overclocking from MSI. This card operates at a combination of frequencies 1354/1468 MHz (Base/Boost), the memory operates at an effective value of 7 GHz.

    When you install the MSI Gaming App, you can use the faster OC Mode profile with a combination of 1379/1493/7100 MHz.

    The simple solutions of the GeForce GTX 1050 line are characterized by a floating Boost frequency, which varies over a significant range, due to severe power limitations. MSI GAMING has increased Power Limit, which ensures stable operation at maximum Boost frequencies. And the real core frequency in the gaming load was kept at 1772 MHz (rare bursts up to 1797 MHz). When working on an open bench in a room with a temperature of 22 ° C, the core warmed up to modest temperatures of 62-63 ° C.

    The video card turned out to be very quiet in operation. Powerful cooling easily kept the GP107 chip at low temperatures at less than 800 RPM. And even in harsh operating conditions, it is unlikely that the speed will increase much.

    MSI’s initial performance is excellent, but we still need to evaluate the potential of the simplest GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. To do this, the base frequency was reduced so as to bring the final Boost value to a level that is closer to the average frequency value for ordinary models. And if we start from reviews from other sources, then 1648-1654 MHz with rare bursts up to 1671 MHz fully meet such requirements.

    High technical performance, power reserve and high-quality cooling allow you to achieve maximum frequencies without much effort. At the same time, the overall frequency potential of the representatives of the GTX 1050 series is weaker than the potential of the older 16-nm NVIDIA chips. Judging by our experience and other reviews, the ceiling for budget Pascals is about 1900 MHz, and if top versions can keep stable frequencies at this level, then simple versions reach these values ​​at peak moments.

    We managed to overclock our MSI graphics card to 1479MHz at the base frequency with a final Boost at the level of 1898-1924 MHz. Memory overclocking 4050 MHz (effective value 8100 MHz).

    Such overclocking is easily implemented in quiet mode. We manually cranked the fans up to 1100 rpm, which even brought the heat down to a ridiculous 52°C.

    Video cards of the GeForce GTX 1050 series are comparable to the younger solutions of the previous series in the face of the GeForce GTX 950 and GeForce GTX 960. From AMD, there will be a representative of the middle class of the old generation in the face of the Radeon R9 270X and the new budget Radeon RX 460 video adapter.
