GeForce GTX 960 vs UHD 770 specs and performance

For gaming, the GeForce GTX 960 graphics card is better than the UHD 770 in our tests.

Our database shows that the GeForce GTX 960 has a significantly higher core clock speed. This is the frequency at which the graphics core is running at. While not necessarily an indicator of overall performance, this metric can be useful when comparing two GPUs based on the same architecture. Despite this, the UHD 770 has a slightly higher boost clock speed. This is a frequency that can be reached if the GPU is cooled sufficiently and has enough power.

In addition, the UHD 770 has a significantly lower TDP at 15 W when compared to the GeForce GTX 960 at 120 W. Heat output doesn’t match power consumption directly but, it’s a good estimate.

In terms of raw gaming performance in our GPU benchmark, the GeForce GTX 960 is better than the UHD 770.

    Since the launch of the new generation of consoles, the system requirements of games have grown. The expanded capabilities of the hardware of these devices and a significant increase in memory allowed developers to work with high-resolution textures, and, as a result, the general requirements for multiplatform projects increased. Ultra-high resolution monitors are also slowly gaining popularity. A couple of years ago, two gigabytes were an attribute of powerful video cards, and now in the top segment they compete with models with four, six, and even eight gigabytes. GeForce GTX 9 Standard Edition60 provides two gigabytes of video memory. But many manufacturers managed to release alternative versions with four gigabytes. Is it justified for a device with such performance? Let’s try to find an answer.

    This will require two instances of the GeForce GTX 960 with different amounts of memory. They will be tested in a number of games at 1920×1080 resolution with Ultra graphics quality. To identify the direct impact of memory size on performance, you need to compare video adapters at the same frequencies. In view of the variety of models produced in terms of frequency characteristics, such an operation will require little manual intervention.

    ASUS STRIX GTX 960 DC2OC with 4 GB VRAM will take part in this comparison. This is a factory overclocked video adapter. Fully adjust it to the reference level does not allow certain restrictions on changing the operating frequencies of the GPU. The minimum available option is 1138 MHz at the base frequency with Boost up to 1289 MHz, which is slightly higher than the frequencies of the regular version. Under this configuration 1138/1289 MHz, the second participant with 2 GB was adjusted.

    Let’s do without studying the features of specific models, and focus on performance.

    The main frequency configuration for both versions of the GeForce GTX 960 will be 1138-1289/7012 MHz. Both instances are additionally tested in overclocking. The frequency potential is different. The younger GeForce GTX 960 with 2 GB overclocked to 1352-1516 / 8074 MHz, the 4 GB version was able to work at 1378-1530 / 7840 MHz. At such frequencies, they were compared in the overclocking mode. The different ratio of core and memory frequencies, combined with different memory sizes, are of additional interest. This will reveal more important parameters for the final performance.

    Will not do without comparison with other video adapters. These include the GeForce GTX 770 2GB, Radeon R9 380 2GB, Radeon R9 280X, and Radeon HD 7970 3GB.

    During testing, video memory loading was monitored using the MSI Afterburner utility.
