This year has seen a number of CPU releases from both Intel and AMD. AMD’s resurgence with a high-performing x86 core, combined with their performance-per-dollar strategy, has started to make inroads into the markets that AMD lost during its Bulldozer architecture era. When Intel was offering 10 cores for $1700, AMD started offering 8 cores of almost similar performance for $329, marking a significant shift in what the ‘right price’ for a processor should be.
We collated all the tray prices for the recent processor launches for easy comparison, using the launch price of each product. Exact pricing today may differ due to retailers or sales – we have confirmed that these are still the official MSRPs for these processors.

Almost every Coffee Lake processor is identical in price to its Kaby Lake predecessor. The main deviations are the K processors, with the Core i7-8700K being +$20 over the i7-7700K, and the i5-8600K being +$15 over the i5-7600K. There is still competition in every segment.
The Competition: Red Mist (AMD)
AMD’s Ryzen and Threadripper parts occupy anywhere from almost $100 for a base quad core design up to $999 for sixteen cores with simultaneous multithreading. It is widely expected that Intel will have a standard instructions-per-clock advantage with its processors, but also Intel is running its processors north of 4.0 GHz for the most part, while AMD is limited by its manufacturing process to 4.0 GHz at best.
If we do a straightforward price breakdown, the Core i7-8700K ($359) sits almost equally between the Ryzen 7 1700X ($399) and Ryzen 7 1700 ($329). Here this would be a battle of sixteen Zen threads compared to 12 Coffee Lake threads, with the IPC and frequency advantage heavily on Intel’s side. It will be interesting to see where the Core i7-8700 ($303) sits in performance per dollar compared to the Ryzen 7 1700.
The Core i5-8600K ($257) has a nearer neighbor for company: the Ryzen 5 1600X ($248). Before today, this battle was between a quad-core, quad-thread Core i5 against a 12-thread AMD Ryzen chip. With Intel moving the Core i5 parts to having six full cores, albeit without hyperthreading but with a high frequency, it is going to be an interesting battle between the two at this price.
The Core i5-8400 ($182) and Core i3-8350K ($169) sit near the Ryzen 5 1500X ($189) and the Ryzen 5 1400 ($169) respectively. The difference between the Ryzen 5 1500X and the Core i3-8350K would be interesting, given the extreme thread deficit (12 threads vs 4) between the two.
The Competition: Friendly Fire (Intel)
Intel cannot escape competing with itself. Having played with six-core chips in the high-end desktop space, there was ultimately going to be a time when the mainstream platform would start to overlap with the high-end desktop and potentially consume some sales.
As mentioned above, for most of the 8th Generation Coffee Lake processors, the new parts are simple swap-ins for the old ones. The only ones that have a difference of opinion are going to be the overclockable K models.
Straight off the bat it looks like that the new Coffee Lake processors are going to consume both of the quad-core Kaby Lake-X parts. There is a +$10 price difference for the Six-Core Coffee Lake CPUs, but that $10 gets an extra two cores, cheaper motherboards, an easier to understand ecosystem, and if you need it, integrated graphics. On paper it is a no-brainer – quad-core HEDT processors should be dead now.
Comparing the six-core Skylake-X i7 parts to the Coffee Lake-K parts is going to be interesting. Here’s a straight specification comparison.

The main two in contention are the Core i7-8700K ($359) and the Core i7-7800X ($389). For a difference of $30, the Skylake-X chip is two generations behind and slower on frequency, but offers quad-channel memory and 28 PCIe lanes for more PCIe coprocessors. While the Coffee Lake will almost certainly win in terms of raw processor performance, features such as DRAM support and PCIe lanes are not to be thrown away lightly. If you absolutely need > 64 GB of memory, or more than two add-in cards, you have no choice but to look at the Skylake-X platform.
Key Comparisons to Look Out For
In the next series of pages, we will go through our benchmark suite. While we have only had time to run through a limited number of tests with the Core i7-8700K and the Core i5-8400, there are two battles worth keeping an eye on:
- Core i7-8700K vs Core i7-7800X
- Core i5-8400 vs Ryzen 5 1500X
Hopefully we will get the other components in for review, in particular the Core i7-8700 and Core i3-8100, both of which will be interesting to plot in performance-per-dollar graphs.

Intel Core i3-8350K vs. i5-8400 vs. Ryzen 5 1500X
Intel’s Coffee Lake CPU stack
Intel’s new Coffee Lake processors have been very competitive with AMD’s Ryzen, as we previously pointed out in our i7-8700K and i5-8600K comparisons against the competition.
Finally, we turn our attention to the 4-core 4-thread i3 line. In this article, I’ll be comparing what we know about the i3-8350K against AMD’s price equivalent, the Ryzen 5 1500X. Intel’s segmentation has gone quite out of hand though, and the 6-core 6-thread i5-8400 falls into the same price category, costing only around $10 more than the 8350K and 1500X.
So, how do these sub-$200 processors compare in gaming and some light productivity work?
Specifications
Specifications of the Coffee Lake, Kaby Lake and Ryzen CPUs. Source: TechPowerUp
The $180 i3-8350K is an unlocked CPU, so it requires the purchase of a separate cooler and a Z370 motherboard. It has 4 cores and 4 threads and runs at a 4 GHz base clock. The 4-core 8-thread Ryzen 5 1500X also costs around $180, but comes with a decent stock cooler and can be overclocked on cheaper B350 motherboards. It has a base clock of 3.5 and a boost of 3.7 GHz. The i5-8400 is the only CPU here with a locked frequency, but it has 6 cores and 6 threads and costs around $190. Even though it has a base clock of only 2.8 GHz on all cores, its max single-core boost is stated at 4.0 GHz. Depending on the motherboard, it is possible to automatically run all 6 cores at 4.0 GHz, which makes this processor very interesting.
Non-gaming benchmarks
A year ago it was hard to believe that we could be talking about productivity benchmarks with an i3 CPU, but now that Intel and AMD have upped the core counts in the sub-$200 parts, this doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. In general, the Ryzen 5 1500X beats the overclockable i3-8350K most of the time. The i5-8400 looks like the best value out of the three, though — at least at stock speeds.
Blender utilizes both higher clockspeeds and cores, so the 1500X is slightly faster than the i3-8350K, whereas the locked i5-8400 is faster than both. Source: TechSpot
Adobe Premiere, the most popular video editing software, is the typical working environment for most video content creators. Exporting a 4K60 H.264 video, the 1500X is slightly faster than the i3-8350K, but the i5-8400 is yet again noticeably ahead of both. Source: TechSpot
Gaming benchmarks
In gaming, the landscape stays very similar to all previous Intel vs. Ryzen comparisons. Due to Intel’s superior single-threaded performance and video games being optimized to utilize fewer cores, most current titles perform better on Intel processors. However, the locked i5-8400 looks very interesting in these benchmarks. Even though its frequency is locked, its performance is comparable to the previous generation flagship CPUs from Intel.
TechPowerUp does great comparison charts. Here we can see that taking the i3-8350K as base 100% performance, the Ryzen 5 1500X is on average 5% behind at 1080p. The i5-8400 is on the other hand even faster than the overclocked 8350K, falling only slightly behind at 1440p. At higher resolutions, the difference between the processors tends to dissolve; what was previously a 15% difference between the i7-7700K and Ryzen 3 1200 at 1080p becomes a mere 3-4% at 4K. Loading times and general smoothness of the experience are still worse on the lower-tier CPUs, but general gaming performance is almost indistinguishable. Source: TechPowerUp
Looking at a totally different benchmarking method from Techspot, where Steve used the Vega 64 liquid cooled graphics card, we can see that the general picture stays the same – at stock speeds the i5-8400 beats both processors without a sweat. Source: TechSpot
Overclocking and power consumption
As previously stated, both the i3-8350K and Ryzen 5 1500X are unlocked, overclockable chips. However, few publications have reported their overclocking results. Neither TechPowerUp nor TechSpot were able to reach 5 GHz, with TechPowerUp stopping at a 4.5 GHz overclock with a decent Noctua NH-U14S cooler. A 240mm all-in-one cooler did help them reach 4.6-4.7 GHz, but the system would be highly unstable at anything past that, independent of voltage. TechSpot managed a hefty 4.9 GHz on their 8350K under a liquid-cooled all-in-one CPU cooler.
The Ryzen 5 1500X, as most Ryzen CPUs, maxes out at around 3.9-4.0 GHz.
Overclocking the CPUs did slightly close the gap between them, but the i5-8400 is still ahead of both in Blender. Source: TechSpot
In terms of power consumption, the 8350K and 1500X are comparable at stock. The i5-8400 consumes slightly more power, comparable to that of the overclocked Ryzen 5 1500X. The overclocked i3-8350K, on the other hand, consumes noticeably more power, similar to a stock i7-8700K. Source: TechSpot
The Core i5-8400 is a great CPU, but…
As the benchmarks show, the Core i5-8400 is the most enticing CPU of the three. However, it is important to point out that due to this being a locked CPU, it is potentially overkill to pair it with a multiplier-unlocked, more expensive Z370 motherboard. The problem here is that there are no B- or H-series motherboards on the market yet. We won’t see those until 2018. So, all these tests were done on a more expensive than necessary Z370 motherboard.
This brings forth a number of questions: Will the 4.0 GHz on all 6 cores of the i5-8400 be supported on the cheaper B- and H-series motherboards? What will the RAM speed support be like? Is what we’re seeing here a best-case-scenario for the Core i5-8400?
Conclusion
Coffee Lake continues the story of beating AMD’s Ryzen CPUs in terms of performance. However, as we have pointed out multiple times before, the price of the CPU doesn’t equal the price of the platform.
The total platform cost of the i3-8350K will be slightly higher than Ryzen or the i5-8400. We will need at least a $30 cooler and a $120 motherboard on top of the $180 CPU, for a total of at least $330, which may bring us a 4. 5 GHz overclock.
The $180 Ryzen 5 1500X needs only a $80 B350 motherboard to function out of the box, so that will be a total of $260, at least $70 less than the Intel platform. In this case, are these CPUs in the same price league and are they even comparable?
That doesn’t matter when the Core i5-8400 comes into play. At only $190, with a stock cooler and an $80 B360 motherboard (in 2018), this platform would be a steal at $270. However, due to there being no B- or H-series motherboards on the market right now, we’re forced to buy a Z370 motherboard instead, and they start at $120. This brings us to around $310 for the Core i5-8400. On all fronts, it performs better than the overclocked i3-8350K. So, there is no way we can recommend the i3-8350K when you could buy an i5-8400 instead.
In conclusion, when choosing out of these three CPUs, we would recommend the Ryzen 5 1500X on the AM4 platform in a case where the extra $60-$70 will help you get a better graphics card or larger capacity SSD. If that is not the case, then the Core i5-8400 is your best choice at around $300 total platform cost, with a Z370 motherboard.
Once B- and H-series motherboards are on the market in 2018, the i5-8400 paired with a cheaper B- or H-series motherboard looks poised to beat everything else in its price range.

[Edit/Modify Cache Info]
Cache Organization Cache is a hardware component containing a relatively small and extremely fast memory designed to speed up the performance of a CPU by preparing ahead of time the data it needs to read from a relatively slower medium such as main memory. The organization and amount of cache can have a large impact on the performance, power consumption, die size, and consequently cost of the IC. Cache is specified by its size, number of sets, associativity, block size, sub-block size, and fetch and write-back policies. Note: All units are in kibibytes and mebibytes. |

To date, AMD has almost completely finished updating the line of processors based on the Zen core. The top-end Ryzen 7 2700X has come out, the mid-range CPU with six cores is the Ryzen 5 2600X, and APUs with the Vega video core are attacking with might and main from below. The only thing left to do was to cut the TDP level and announce versions without X, which was done. It turns out that not only top-end solutions are important for companies, but also their energy-efficient versions?

Ryzen 5 2600X — what is it? What could be improved and so in a good processor? Its predecessor, the Ryzen 5 1600X, was good for everyone: six cores, uncut caches, support for any DDR4 RAM, a nice price. But what improvements did users want to see? And what can we expect from a Zen+ representative? First of all, a higher CPU operating frequency and better compatibility.

The performance of AMD Ryzen processors in games is extremely acute. Theoretically, one can speak of a stalemate. On the one hand, Ryzen offers many cores and high speed in applications designed for multi-threading; on the other hand, its owners a priori lose in personnel. At the first one, we already found that the performance with single-threaded jobs was increased by several percent, introduced support for high-frequency memory and significantly increased compatibility with it. All this must necessarily affect the speed of rendering frames.

While this material was being prepared, AMD presented a small surprise — prices for its processors in foreign stores decreased by $10-20. Yes, and in Russia, judging by the numbers, they are gradually falling. And in this case, the younger Ryzen are becoming more affordable and of greater interest. Especially if you remember that in past materials, the difference in speed between the top CPUs was not so noticeable.

At first glance, the term «Processor dependence» is difficult to understand, but still it has, though not a simple, but an explanation. In theory, the dependence between the processor and the video card manifests itself linearly: the better the quality in the game and the higher the resolution, the less pronounced it is. But is it possible to strike a balance and will the game engine, graphics quality, resolution and secondary factors affect it?

Not so long ago, Intel introduced Coffee Lake processors, releasing a six-core Core i5-8600K (analogous to the hero of the review) and a quad-core Core i3-8350K in the most massive segment. It is on them that they make the main bet in the company, because the first one surpasses the Core i7-7700K in characteristics, and the second is suitable for any PC configuration. But there is a third contender for the role of the most successful «heart» of the new system.

Next week, sales of new processors from AMD with integrated graphics will already be launched, which, according to the developers and judging by the leaks on the network, outperforms its competitors in its price category.
This release is the most anticipated event for geeks over the past few years, especially for fans of AMD. The products of this company have always been considered more affordable relative to the closest competitors. And today, in the midst of cryptocurrency mining, when even the weakest representatives of video cards are quite expensive, the issue of price is more relevant than ever. Details below

Over the past years, when many AMD haters and Intel processor lovers have openly buried AMD, the mantra “Wait for Zen” was heard from the mouths of the fans of the red company who did not give up, later replaced by “Wait for Ryzen”. In this article, we will try to figure out whether it was worth the wait and whether that long-awaited increase in performance with the release of a line of new processors turned out.
AMD Ryzen 7 1800x vs. AMD FX 8350
3DMark Time Spy
We chose
3D Mark Time Spy
, it tests not the processor itself, but the graphics system, but as practice shows, this indicator has an extremely strong dependence on the processor. The higher the score, the better, as we can see in the chart below, Ryzen outperformed the FX by more than two to one.
SuperPI
SuperPI is a popular processor benchmark program. The test is carried out by calculating the number Pi up to a million characters in the program called 1m, the value is shown in seconds, the less time spent on calculating the number Pi up to 1 million characters, the better.
Cinebench R15
Cinebench R15 is a well-known test, in which the higher the value, the better. was carried out using 64 bit instructions. Testing also shows single-threaded mode
and multi-threaded mode
HWBot x265
We convert video using x265 codec, in 1080p and 4k modes, the more points the better, comments are superfluous.
Ashes of the Singularity
Ashes of the Singularity tested at 1080p on high settings
DOOM (2016)
DOOM with Vulkan is a strong argument for the FX 8350’s longevity and durability combined with low-level APIs such as Vulcan. This game has been tested at 1080p on ultra settings and 8x TSSAA.
Deus Ex Mankind Divided
DXMD was tested by the built-in benchmark at 1080p resolution at high settings with DX12.
DiRT Rally
In this game, if there is no DX12 or Vulkan, the advantage is almost twofold.
Total War Warhammer
Total War Warhammer works with DX12, and it can be seen that due to the lack of scaling, there is a large dependence on the performance of a single core.
Watch Dogs 2
Watch Dogs 2 loves cores and IPC and this game shows it.
A lot of time has passed since the introduction of the FX 8350. This testing showed that AMD is still better in rendering and computing than in the gaming space, and proved to me personally, as an AMD fan, that Ryzen was worth the wait. Ryzen 7 1800x is far from being a budget processor, its market price is 49$9, but if you want eight cores and sixteen threads, you can get them for $329 with a Ryzen 7 1700. I started a channel in which I initially wanted to show how I immersed myself in the doorway theme from scratch and to infinity, and in the end I just talk about myself, my successes and failures in websites, applications, offline projects. AMD Ryzen 5 2600 — 1800X Gaming Performance
Introduction
As previously reported, AMD made a dizzying return to the processor market with the Ryzen family, which Intel had to respond to with 8th Generation Core processors, which gained 50% -100% «Nuclear Growth». The blue giant managed to seize the initiative again, but only until AMD responded with the second generation of Ryzen «Pinnacle Ridge». We previously reviewed two of the four launch products, and now the most affordable option is the Ryzen 5 2600.
Retailers consider the Ryzen 5 1600 to be their cash cow, although at first glance it seems that 1800X or 1600X bring more profit. After all, we get a 6-core chip with 12 threads and an unlocked multiplier for $ 200, the package also includes a cooler. This price point was simply stunning for Intel’s meager 7th Gen Core i5 lineup, and it wasn’t until the launch of the Core i5-8400 that Intel managed to put a brake on AMD’s success. Unlike Intel, which bloated the 6-core new Core i5 family with five products, AMD’s lineup is quite small, with only two SKUs: Ryzen 5 2600X and Ryzen 5 2600. The 2600X chip in our launch review of the new line impressed many and continues to be one of the best processors under $300.
AMD segmented the Ryzen 5 2600 from the 2600X pretty close. It’s still a 6-core chip, available on a 12nm «Pinnacle Ridge» die, with a full 16MB of shared L3 cache, and you still get an unlocked multiplier for some overclocking. Clock speeds succumb to the nominal 3.40 GHz with a 3.90 GHz boost, and a vestige of XFR 2.0 feature adds a 50 MHz cap on top. This is surprisingly close to the nominal 3.60GHz and 4.10GHz (+200MHz XFR) boost clocks of the Ryzen 5 2600X given the difference between the 2700 and 2700X. Naturally lower frequencies translate into a much lower TDP rating of 65W. The Ryzen 7 2700 surprisingly surprised us with its power efficiency, and one can only imagine how the 2600X will perform with fewer cores.
The Ryzen 5 2600 is priced at $199, $30 less than the Ryzen 5 2600X. Its price point is aimed at several products from Intel, including the i5-8400, i5-8500 and maybe even the i5-8600. The primary target audience for this processor is avid gamers looking for an affordable processor that won’t bottleneck modern high-end graphics cards and can also deliver decent multi-threaded performance in addition to gaming.

Testing of Intel Core i5 processors for LGA1151 «Second Edition» platform
Testing methodology for 2017 computer systems
Testing eight-core processors Intel Core i7-9700K and i9-9900K (Coffee Lake Refresh)
The release of the «ninth» generation Core processors in October last year was accompanied by a mass of materials devoted to older, eight-core models of this family: Core i7-9700K and i9-9900K — precisely because they are eight-core. These were the first such processors for the Intel LGA115x mass platform (more precisely, the line of platforms that had changed several generations since its appearance in 2009), and the Core i9 brand was not previously used in this segment, and the Core i7 changed significantly, «exchanging» six dual-threaded cores to eight «single-threaded» ones. In general, there was much to discuss.
The third processor of the Coffee Lake Refresh family presented in the fall, namely the Core i5-9600K, did not cause such a stir. And this is also understandable: six-core Core i5 became last year, and they remain so. At the same time, it cannot be said that the i5-9600K is exactly identical to the i5-8600K — after all, it uses the same crystal as the older models (just two cores are disabled), and the same improved thermal interface. The first one is especially interesting, since the family updates are designed to “plug up” the “holes” identified about a year ago, such as Meltdown, in a hardware way. In principle, all this is fixable and programmatically — only software fixes seem to do much more harm in practice at the moment than the vulnerabilities themselves (however, as is usually the case). In this case, there is nothing to fix. And the operating frequencies of the new processor have increased somewhat, so that in the default mode it will be faster than its predecessor, while maintaining the unlocked multiplier. But fans of overclocking can just (at least theoretically) improve the thermal interface.
In a word, there are pluses, but not fundamental ones, so, other things being equal, the i5-9600K looks a little more interesting than the i5-8600K, but it is unlikely to radically influence the choice of those buyers who were looking at other processor lines. However, it makes sense to test the novelty — at least for the final material on this version of the test methodology. In addition, from the Core i5 of the previous line, we previously tested only the youngest i5-8400 and the oldest i5-8600K, and for a very long time, literally at the start of sales. And now the i5-8500 and i5-8600 have fallen into our hands, so the whole family has gathered. But is there any noticeable difference between its representatives? Let’s see.

We have collected all four Core i5 models from the Coffee Lake line. Moreover, as mentioned above, the results of the i5-8400 and i5-8600K were obtained by us a long time ago — with the very first firmware versions in the very first boards for the LGA1151 «Second Edition». Accordingly, they may not be entirely up to date — Pentium, for example, we had to test again. In this case, we decided to go the other way: first, get the results of two more models and see if there are any noticeable oddities .

Moreover, we are primarily interested not in this family, but in the Core i5-9600K. Which needs to be compared not so much with the i5-8600K as with the i7-9700K, because now the i5 and i7 lines have become very similar in design, but differ in the number of cores.

In previous generations of desktop Cores, this was usually not the case — most Core i5 and all Core i7 (for the mainstream platform) were quad-core, and differed primarily in the presence / absence of Hyper-Threading support. We decided to take a couple of top models for the “previous” version of LGA1151 “on this voyage”. It is useful to refresh the memory, and in practice, the user of some Core i3 for this platform may have a question, how best to increase performance (if suddenly it is not enough): change the processor or, nevertheless, “move” to another platform? 9We added 0003
Core i3-8350K first of all in order to evaluate the difference between neighboring families of processors for the new LGA1151 version, not only “from above” (i5 / i7), but also “from below”. In principle, we have already done this, and we also compared it with previous families of processors, but we can repeat it.

Without AMD solutions in a big comparison is impossible. Let’s take a couple of six-core representatives of the Ryzen 5 line (which just formally opposes the Core i5): the younger Ryzen 5 1600, which has fallen considerably in price the year before last, and the older «updated» Ryzen 5 2600X.
Testing technique
The technique is described in detail in a separate article. Here we briefly recall that it is based on the following four pillars:
- iXBT. com performance measurement method based on real applications of the 2017 sample
- Methodology for Measuring Power Consumption in Processor Testing
- How to Monitor Power, Temperature, and Processor Load During Testing
- 2017 Game Performance Measurement Methodology
Detailed results for all tests are available as a complete results spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel 97-2003 format). Directly in the articles, we use already processed data. This is especially true for application tests, where everything is normalized relative to the reference system (AMD FX-8350 with 16 GB of memory, GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card and Corsair Force LE 960 GB SSD) and grouped by computer application areas.
The technique is old, but, as already mentioned, first of all, we now need to replenish the database of results for the final article. After it (finally!) we will switch to a new one — let’s see if anything changes. Then we will also deal with games, since everything has long been clear with the old ones.
iXBT Application Benchmark 2017
Judging by this group of tests, the 8400 and 8600K do not need to be updated — a beautiful ladder that corresponds to the operating clock speeds. They also correct the degree of influence of the number of cores in the i3-i5-i7 line. If we consider modern models of these families, it is easy to see that, already along with the release of the “eighth” generation of Core, a kind of denomination of indices occurred, which was corrected by the devaluation of the “ninth”. And over the past year and a half, six-core Ryzen 5 have lost their status as convincing winners of the Core i7, but still continue to overtake the Core i5 — which is what is required of them.
These applications (as well as the previous group) are able to load any reasonable number of cores and/or threads with work, so nothing changes in a flat way.
As has been noted more than once, interactive work with video (unlike transcoding) demonstrates a not so great dependence of performance on the number of computation threads. But in the end, this degenerates into just a decrease in the «gap» between the Core i3 and Core i7 (modern, of course), and the Core i5 still fall into the same subrange.
The obvious odds of processors with SMT support can be explained (as we have known for a long time) by the behavior of one of their Adobe Photoshop filters, but this does not prevent us from comparing Core i3, i5 and i7 under the same conditions. And in them, as we see, the Core i5 “family” degenerates into the Core i5 “processor” to an even greater extent than usual. It’s simple — you can do it without indexes.
In less clinical cases, we return to the usual ladders within the family — but with a radical difference from neighboring steps.
The only case where it can be argued that with the test results of a year ago, something is not quite the same as from the point of view of modernity. On the other hand, this only applies to the Core i5-8600K — and to a degree that has almost no effect on the state of affairs «as a whole».
With a regular grand total. The performance of different Core i5 models varies — simply because they operate at different frequencies. But the fundamental importance of this factor is much less than the differences in the number of cores — but it already gives in the end not different models, but different families.
Energy consumption and energy efficiency
Sometimes you can see that one family, but within different generations — these are two big differences. And the new is not always better than the old. By releasing the six-core Core i5 and Core i7 the year before last, Intel managed to keep their appetites within the same framework that the best quad-core Core i5 had. But the power consumption of the new eight-core crystal is very high. Last time we assumed that this was due precisely to the number of cores, but the hypothesis turned out to be wrong: turning off a couple of cores reduces power consumption, but not to the level of the year before last «classic» six-cores. Nothing terrible: the Core i7 for the first version of the LGA1151 consumed just that much, and Ryzen 5 is just starting from this level. But… but there are parameters by which the new processors are worse than the old ones.
Therefore, the energy efficiency of the Core i5-9600K is not brilliant. Not bad, but this is a clear step backwards, not forwards. Let’s see if the company will be able to solve the problem as the «simple» models of the new family appear, but so far so.
Total
It may very well be that the fight against vulnerabilities at the hardware level is also not given “for free” — which is the reason for the increased power consumption. However, we repeat, nothing terrible and unprecedented we are not seeing: just some rollback within the framework of the platform, but at a new level of performance. In the worst case, a rollback to the days of LGA1156. However, for 10 years now, all coolers have been designed specifically for the most «gluttonous» processors for LGA115x, and top models of coolers are also designed for their overclocking, i. e. with a noticeable margin. If we are not talking about the top Core i7 or Core i9, but about the new Core i5, then their (more precisely, while its — but other models will have lower frequencies) the power consumption level is still below the maximum. On the other hand, it is clear that in their case, changing the thermal interface is not some kind of gift for overclockers, but an urgent need.
And the main task of the buyer is not to get lost in the abundance of different processors. The choice between lower power consumption and the elimination of vulnerabilities can still be made, as well as between overclocking or a slightly lower price (and given the savings on the board, etc. — and not «a little»). But then the buyer will face three, for example, models of the «eighth» generation (and in the «ninth» there will hardly be less of them), which are essentially one processor. Because within the family in terms of price and performance, they differ slightly, but radically from representatives of neighboring families.
