Description
On September 27-28 at the Innovation 2022 event, Intel introduced its 13th generation of processors, codenamed Raptor Lake. New CPUs will be built on a hybrid architecture, where half of the cores will be productive and half energy efficient (P-cores and E-cores). Energy-efficient blocks have not changed and remain the same as in the previous generation, but the microarchitecture of productive blocks has been changed, and obviously for the better. nine0006
Thanks to E-cores, the processor will consume 15% less power when idle or under low load. A special microcontroller will be responsible for distributing the load on the cores. More precisely, its third variation, which will provide better resource control for multi-threaded tasks, so that the system will work more smoothly. In general, the technology will be familiar to anyone who has dealt with the previous generation of Intel devices.
The company claims performance gains compared to the twelfth generation will be 41% and 15% in multi-threaded and single-threaded modes, respectively. nine0006
Declared support for:
- PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 4.0;
- DDR5 and DDR4, it is worth noting that AMD in its new line of Ryzen 7000 refused to support DDR4.
All Intel CPUs will have an unlocked multiplier, and those with the “F” index will traditionally be without an integrated graphics core. Rated power consumption for processors without integrated graphics will be almost half as much and will be 65 W and 125 W for older models, respectively. nine0006
Compared with the previous series, the 13th series will receive an increase in the number of cores and higher clock speeds, which leads to a significant increase in CPU heat dissipation. In resource-intensive tasks, temperatures can rise above 80 ° C, and without proper water cooling, they can exceed the peak of permissible values.
The new generation of semiconductors has prompted the creation of another series of chipsets in motherboards (700 series), but the 600 chipsets will also support new Intel processors. Motherboards based on the latest version of chipsets promise to be available, the cheapest one will cost about $270. nine0006
The Raptor Lake line is represented by the following models (in the future the company promises to expand it with more budget options):
The advanced line turned out to be much more powerful, but at the same time incredibly voracious and hot.
In 2023, the company plans to release a special series of i9 processors-13900K, which without additional manipulations will be able to operate at a maximum frequency of 6.0 GHz!
CPUs of the new series will demonstrate excellent compatibility and high-quality interaction with NVIDIA’s new family of graphics cards, thanks to the hard work of optimization engineers from both companies.
Characteristics
Intel Core i9-13900K and Intel Core i7-13700K can be considered the flagships of the line, because due to their design, they are the most productive in their family. The more popular 13th gen model, the Intel Core i5-13600K, and its non-graphics version would be great successors to the Core i7-12700K, even with a 2-core advantage. The characteristics of all new products are shown in the table below. nine0006
Features | Intel Core i5-13600K | Intel Core i7-13700K | Intel Core i9-13900K |
---|---|---|---|
Cores/Threads | 14 / 20 | 16 / 24 | 24 / 32 |
Rated/maximum frequency | 3.5 / 5.1 GHz | 3.4 / 5.4 GHz | 3.0 / 5.8 GHz |
L2 cache | 20 MB | 24 MB | 32 MB |
L3 cache | 24 MB | 30 MB | 36 MB |
TDP | 125 W | 125 W | 125 W |
Maximum temperature | 100C | 100C | 100C |
All processors are made in 7 nm process technology and have an integrated graphics core Intel UHD Graphics 770, which distinguishes them from the background of the «F» versions, which do not have integrated graphics. In all other respects they are identical. The supported RAM format is DDR4-3200 and DDR5-5600, and the total number of PCI-Express lanes is 20 pieces. nine0006
The graphics won’t perform great, but will allow you to postpone the purchase of a video card until more favorable times, coping with most everyday tasks and medium-demanding games.
Processors support a full set of additional instructions from AES-NI to SIPP. The new line also supports Wi-Fi 6E and a series of monitors with Thunderbolt 4 technology.
Intel semiconductors are exactly on par with the new AMD line, and only independent tests and time can show how good it is. nine0006
Benchmarks
Synthetic
The i9-13900K is the flagship of the i9-13900K series, which claims to be the most productive processor for gaming and resource-intensive tasks according to the results of public testing. In only a few tests, it is on par with AMD’s best past generation gaming CPU, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
In the CPU-Z and CineBench benchmarks, the flagship processor performed quite well, surpassing the Intel Core i9-12900K(F) in every way. With the AMD flagship in synthetic tests, it was relatively on a par, losing in some places, and surpassing Ryzen 9 in some places.7950X. But in general, the stones showed an equal result.
Gaming
In gaming tests, the advantage for Intel is solely due to the difference in the number of cores and threads, so in many games the new family of «blue» leaves the «red» behind. It is worth waiting for an independent assessment of gaming publications. When tested in games, the processors are on par with the new AMD line. They lose when the system is equipped with DDR4 memory.
In comparison with the previous series, the temperature of computing devices has increased significantly, in some places reaching up to 94°C, and TDP increased by an average of 20-40 watts.
Most of the tests showed that the new Intel Core 13 will be an excellent base for games, and the mid-budget models of the new generation have come close to the flagships of the previous generation, which demonstrates an impressive increase in power.
Release date
The start of sales of processors took place on October 20, 2022, and in the near future it will be quite problematic to find a new product in the public domain, since there are difficulties with logistics and supplies. However, from mid-November, HYPERPC will already be able to purchase gaming computers and workstations configured with top-end Intel Core 13 Gen. nine0006
Price
The price of the new line has changed slightly: older models are sold at almost the same price as the models of the previous generation. The younger ones added a little in value, but not significantly, and the difference sometimes does not reach even 10%.
RRP for the Raptor Lake processor family is as follows:
- i9-13900K — $589
- i9-13900K(F) — $564
- i7-13700K — $409
- i7-13700K(F) — $384
- i5-13600K — $319
- i5-13600K(F) — $294
The specific price in the Russian Federation for this series of devices has not yet been officially approved.

Intel Core i5-2400 processor overview
to the CPU of average performance in the line of the third generation of Intel Core processors, it has physical 4 cores without logical division with frequencies of 3100-3400 megahertz and heat dissipation of 95W, which will require a good cooling system (up to 120W). The Intel Core i5-2400 is made according to the technological standards of 32nm and carries the Sandy Bridge architecture. At the time of entering the market, this processor was considered a good gaming option. Currently, an Intel Core i5-2400 paired with a fairly powerful graphics card (Radeon RX470, GeForce GTX960 and older), at least 8 gigabytes of RAM, at 1080p resolution (1920*1080) and medium-low graphics settings is still able to provide fairly good performance (30-40 frames, with a drawdown of up to 25 frames per second in complex scenes) even in demanding projects like Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2. In older games like GTA V and Tomb Raider 2013, the Intel Core i5-2400 will give a comfortable number of frames per second (45fps +) at high graphics settings. This CPU can easily cope with office tasks, providing comfortable work in standard Windows and Office applications, surfing the Internet. nine0006
