i7-8700t Review and Test

This content has been written by a website visitor and has been rewarded.

After selling the second computer, it’s time to make a long-desired upgrade of the system. Buying a video card in such wild times, of course, disappears. Personally, I don’t have that kind of money. And even if there were, then there is no desire to pay more than 70 thousand for the heir to the GTX 1060.

Actually, the proceeds made it possible to implement three options.

The first step was to «move» from the current generation of CoffeeLake to the new socket 1200, represented by the i5-10400f processor. The board could keep him company, both on the B460 chipset, and on the newer one — on the B560 (ASRock B560M Pro). The latter was a little more expensive, but it would allow overclocking the memory … And this is where the minus of this upgrade lies in my case. Memory would move from the «coffee pot». And I have questions for her. She categorically refused to work at lower, relative to the XMP profile, primary timings. This made it clear that overclocking is also not worth counting on.

recommendations

Of course, there may be other reasons for this behavior. This needed to be clarified. Firmware of more recent versions of the BIOS did not give anything. I did not take risks and lay out about 24 thousand for this option.

The i7-9700 could cost about the same in different versions. Here we already have 8 cores, albeit without multithreading technology. A big plus is the higher CPU frequency, which would come in handy in older low-threaded games where frequency is important. But the high frequency of this processor has two drawbacks.

The first is the increased power consumption of the processor. The power supply of the ASRock B360 Fatality board can handle it, even in stress tests. But the second one is the elevated temperatures of the cores. I have looked at many reviews and reviews on this processor. Many wrote that even under solid coolers, the processor got quite hot. This prospect did not particularly suit me: I am not a supporter of high temperatures and noise. Let the owners of i9-11900K with RTX 3090 put up with this …

But the main disadvantage of such an upgrade was the «internal toad», which insistently said: «Processor at the price of another processor along with the board . .. no, no need …»

Yes, the price of the former pretop is quite high. Most likely, I would have bought it anyway, if there hadn’t been a third option in the face of the «energy efficient» i7-8700t. The price for it was two thousand more than the i5-10400f, but I saved on buying a board. The new i5 gains a little in terms of frequency response, but it’s a rather meager gain.

It only remained to understand how the memory would behave with the new processor. And she «did not disappoint» my worst assumptions. And also refused to work on timings that differ from the XMP profile. Thus, moving to the B560 would most likely be an empty undertaking. Moreover, I had to be content with only the mATX option, which I don’t really like.

Well, as the ancients said: «The die is cast.» It remains only to test it in operation. There were no problems with the installation. I changed the processors, smeared Thermagic ZF 12 Evo thermal paste and installed the cooler.

The computer started without even displaying a warning that a hardware change had occurred (I had this when I changed the i5-4690k to the Xeon E3-1240 v3), many settings remained the same, the limits were turned up to 150.

The t series processors are not new , they were already present in previous generations. They have an OEM version only and are intended mainly for compact branded computers, in which low consumption is at the forefront. That is why the official TDP limit is limited to 35W. But we don’t need that. Without the «collar» the processor is able to «eat away» and more than 110 watts. This value was obtained in the test by the ComputerBase resource.

Well, a lot depends on the processor itself, on its operating voltage. In terms of frequency characteristics, it completely matches the i5-8400, plus Hyper-threading technology. Full specifications of the processor can be viewed on the Intel website.

First, a few synthetic tests.

CPU Z

As you can see, the results in the AIDA 64 cache and memory test are very close.

There is a difference in the Cinebench R23 benchmark in multithreading. Everything is clear here:

The consumption in this test is about 60W:

The maximum consumption is measurable in the Linx run:

88W — this is at the level of my i5-8400, which operates at a higher voltage and was able to «eat out» almost 90W as much as possible.

Well, let’s start playing.

System:

Processor i7-8700t (operating frequencies 3800-3900 MHz)

RAM: 16 GB, frequency 2666 MHz (16-18-18-35 cr2)

Motherboard: AsRock B360 Fatality Gaming K4

Video card: EVGA GTX 1070 FTW (2025-20238 MHz core and 8900 MHz memory)

The choice of games this time will not be very extensive. Settings will be maxed out. In cases where the i5-8400 will oppose, the test will pass in two resolutions.

The first to enter the embrasure will be Assassins Creed: Origins . At 1080p, the gap between the processors reaches 4 frames, which is very small. There is an emphasis on the video card:

8700t

8400

At 720p with a resolution modifier of 50%, the difference is already significant.

8700t

8400

The fact is that this benchmark is probably the most processor-dependent of all the Assassins. And here the multithread is necessary, as it is impossible by the way.

Now let’s check the performance in Assassins Creed: Odyssey .

In 1080p resolution there is no difference at all, and besides, it is very difficult to guess the weather, which affects the result.

8700t

8400 In reduced resolution, the difference was 7 frames.

8700t

8400

Assassins Creed: Valhalla: This game is the heaviest on the graphics card.

1080p:

8700t

8400720r:

8700t

8400

Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition : The latest version of the game. I didn’t test on the i5-8400, but the result is almost the same on an older version of the game.

Result for i7-8700t at 1080p:

8700t

Immortals Fenyx Rising : she also has no results with the i5-8400. Therefore, we will do without sparring here.

1080p:

8700t

Shadow of the Tomb Raider : Although CPU-intensive, the benchmark results are very distorted. Only the second half of the third segment of the benchmark can be considered a processor-dependent part.

1080r:

8700t

8400 There is no difference, although, watching the benchmark itself, the advantage of the i7 in the market is clearly visible.

720r:

8700t

8400

Tom Clancys Ghost Recon Wildlands : i5-8400 result is also missing here. But the game is not particularly processor-dependent.

1080p:

8700t

In general, the result was expected for me. The advantage of the new processor can only be seen in the game itself, where all sorts of friezes disappear. The gameplay became very comfortable, although I did not suffer much with the i5.

And here it is worth making an important remark right away. Upgrading to a more powerful processor or ultra-overclocked memory (not in my case) with this kind of video card is extremely doubtful.

Would I buy a processor, pulling money out of the family budget? Definitely — no.

The best option is to buy a more powerful graphics card. But what is happening in the market, you can see for yourself.

Let’s wait…

P.S.:

My advice to those who are sitting on the old processors i5 generations Sandy Bridge — Haswell. If you have a GTX 1070 level card or even worse, and you are tight enough on a budget, then you should not run to the store to buy a new system now. The amount you spend on this will definitely not meet your expectations. Yes, it will be better, but at what cost?

If you are on a tight budget, you should take either the i7 from Avito or the corresponding Xeon from Aliexpress. The result of the upgrade will be worse, but the costs are small. And «denyushki» is better to save for the future. Here we are already waiting for new Intel processors with «amazing characteristics» and no less «fantastic» DDR5 memory. The prices for these products will definitely impress…
