Intel caught manipulating benchmarks and underreporting Ryzen 7 2700X in games against «best gaming processor» Core i9-9900K
Volodymyr Skripin
Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Head of News
The day before yesterday, Intel introduced three new CPUs, part of the ninth generation of Core processors. Among them is the new flagship Core i9-9900K (8 cores/16 threads), which the manufacturer calls «the best gaming processor in the world.» And while we are all waiting for independent tests to check the degree of conformity of this loud statement with reality, a very interesting story has been revealed related to the official test results of this chip. We are talking about tests by Principled Technologies, commissioned by Intel.

2990WX and Ryzen Threadripper 2950X) was conducted in 19 modern games, including such AAA projects as Total War: Warhammer 2, Far Cry 5, Assassin’s Creed: Origins and Rise of the Tomb Raider.
After poring over the Principled Technologies report, Stephen Walton, one of the editors of the web resource TechSpot, found that the testing itself was not conducted on an equal footing. The reviewer notes that in the case of all systems on the Intel platform, pre-configured XMP profiles were used for RAM, while on systems on the AMD Ryzen platform, DDR4 memory ran at an effective frequency of 2933 MHz with default delays set by the motherboard. In addition, Principled Technologies testers installed four RAM modules, although it is well known that the memory controller in AMD Ryzen processors works best with two sticks.
In the related article, the reviewer essentially accuses Principled Technologies of manipulating benchmarks and intentionally lowering the Ryzen 7 2700X in order to show off the Core i9-9900K in a better light. Considering that Principled Technologies conducted tests on behalf of Intel, it seems extremely doubtful that the latter was not involved in any way with these manipulations.
As confirmation of his words, the source cites the results of its own tests of the Core i7-8700K and Ryzen 7 2700X processors, which were carried out according to the Principled Technologies method. Below in the diagrams you can see a comparison of the results of Principled Technologies and TechSpot specialists. We stipulate that the source tested these processors in the games Ashes of the Singularity, Far Cry 5 and Assassin’s Creed: Origins. At the same time, two Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR4-3200 memory sticks were installed on both systems and settings from XMP profiles were used.
As you can see, in the case of the Core i7-8700K, the source managed to repeat the results of Principled Technologies, while for the Ryzen 7 2700X, the results were noticeably higher. That is, there is a fact of manipulating the results. And this despite the fact that the Ryzen 7 2700X, in fact, is not a direct competitor to the Core i9-9900K.
Neither Principled Technologies nor Intel have yet commented on this information.
