i9-9900K
  • The i9-9900K has a higher turbo clock boost. Turbo Boost is a CPU feature that will run CPU clock speed faster than its base clock, if certain conditions are present. It will enable older software that runs on fewer cores, to perform better on newer hardware. Since games are software too, it is also applicable to them.
Ryzen 7 3700X
  • The Ryzen 7 3700X has higher Level 2 Cache. Data/instructions which have to be processed can be loaded from the fast L2 and the CPU does not have to wait for the very slow DDR RAM
  • The Ryzen 7 3700X has higher Level 3 Cache. This is useful when you have substantial multiprocessing workloads, many computationally intense simultaneous processes. More likely on a server, less on a personally used computer for interactive desktop workloads.
  • The Ryzen 7 3700X is more power efficient and generates less heat.
  • The Ryzen 7 3700X has a smaller process size. The faster a transistor can toggle on and off, the faster it can do work. And transistors that turn on and off with less energy are more efficient, reducing the operating power, or “dynamic power consumption,” required by a processor.

3700X vs. 9900K | WePC

Both the Ryzen 7 3700X and the Intel i9 9900K processors are great options for gamers, but let’s dive into a look at their features a little closer.

Cores and Threads

Both the Ryzen 7 3700X and the Intel i9 9900K processors come with an eight-core processor and 16 threads.

The Ryzen 7 3700X uses a hyperthreading system (SMT), which allows 16 threads to be processed simultaneously. This benefits titles that support multithreading but improves multitasking performance in day-to-day applications. The 3700X does have a lower boost clock of 4. 4 GHz, which results in slightly lower performance in games as they benefit from higher single-core performance.

The 9900K will offer better performance in games due to Intels lower inter-core latency and a higher turbo frequency of 5.0 GHz. The 14% increase compared to AMD’s Ryzen 7 3700X will provide you with faster speeds and enhanced gameplay. We should note the full overclocking potential of the 9900k; you will need a new Z390 chipset motherboard and sufficient cooling.

When compared against one another on benchmark testing, the 9900K came up on top. It beat the 3700X in 5 of the six tests that we ran. The 9900K outperformed in the cinebench R20 single and multi-core tests, PassMark CPU single-core, Geekbench 5 single and multi-core tests.

In most of these tests, the win was marginal, with as little as 1 and 2%. The most noticeable difference was the Passmark CPU single-core, where the 9900K performed better by a whopping 11%. However, when testing the multi-core PassMark CPU, the Ryzen 7 won by a staggering 22%.

These numbers show how little difference between the two in terms of performance, although the 9900K would seem to have the edge.

Architecture

Like the series, architecture is how we categorize design changes across CPU groups, ranging from essential core and thread counts to the more practical logistical side of things.

The Ryzen 7 3700X uses a Zen 2 build, made from a 7nm chipset silicon process node. It delivers consistent performance at higher overclocking speeds and is generally compatible with most existing motherboards.

This is where Coffee Lake Refresh comes in. It is used in the Intel 9900K to assist in the hyper-threading technology, which doubles the power each thread can handle. The Coffee Lake Refresh attaches to the motherboard through an LGA 1151 socket, so you will need to make sure you have the compatible chipset before purchasing this.

Clock Speed

The Ryzen 7 3700X offers a base clock of 3.6GHz and a max boost clock of up to 4. 4GHz. Builds with aftermarket cooling solutions can use Precision Boost Overdrive to increase the power delivered to the CPU by the VRMs, and AutoOC to increase the max clock speed by 200Mhz. The extra clock speed will only be achieved if the Precision Boost algorithm determines sufficient power and thermal headroom.

The Intel 9900K offers an identical base clock of 3.6GHz but boasts a higher turbo frequency of 5GHz. This is reflected in benchmarks, where the 9900K pulls ahead due to the higher core frequency. The 1% lowest average frames are much higher than the 3700X, which could be a deciding factor if you use a 144Hz/240Hz monitor.

Overclocking

Both the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and Intel i9 9900K are fully unlocked, allowing you to push for those faster speeds.

The 3700X is packaged with two handy tools for overclocking. The Precision Boost Overdrive increases the power delivered from VRMs to the processor. This, in turn, allows higher boost clocks if both power requirements and core temperatures are within predefined limits.

AutoOC is an offset of the maximum boost clock, allowing up to 200MHz more headroom on the default max boost clock. However, enabling both PBO and AutoOC doesn’t necessarily mean you will achieve higher boost clocks. This is dependent on your motherboard’s VRM’s ability to deliver the extra power and your cooling system’s ability to maintain low temperatures.

Overclocking the Intel i9 9900K is easy to do and can result in up to a stable 5.1GHz, which is pretty impressive. The i9 9900K can be overclocked higher than the 3700X using air and water cooling but will require a decent cooling solution to dissipate the generated heat.

Overclocking will allow you to achieve better performance, but it is worth noting that overclocking can void your warranty.

Cache

The Ryzen 7 3700X features an L1 cache of 512KB, an L2 or 5MB, and an L3 of 32MB. The memory types support these we have just looked at. As gaming usually requires 16MB of cache, this extra cache will provide excellent speeds and performance for your games.

The intel 9900K is fitted with a single L3 smart cache that has a 15MB capacity. This means that it won’t hold as much at the same time as the Ryzen, but in terms of gameplay, there is very little difference between both CPUs. Opting for the Ryzen 7 will provide you with more cache to play with, handy with larger games.

PCIe

The latest x570 motherboards support PCIe 4.0, allowing up to 64 GB/s between slots, increasing from 32GB/s for PCIe 3.0. A welcomed increase for those with SLI GPUs or rely heavily on M.2 SSDs.

PCIe 4 will provide outstanding communication speeds from your video cards to the rest of your computer, an excellent win for gamers!

The latest Z390 motherboards do not support PCIe 4.0. However, this is unlikely to pose a bottleneck though regular gaming. PCIe 4.0 delivers a noticeable benefit when running SLI GPUs or extensive file processing with an M.2 SSD.

The Ryzen 7 has 20 PCI express lanes, more than Intel’s 9900K, which boasts 16. The difference here is small, but for those after the extra lanes, the Ryzen is the better choice.

Compatibility

The intel i9 9900K is compatible with Z370 and Z390 motherboards; however, to realize the full potential of the 9900K, a Z390 motherboard is recommended. If you wish to upgrade your CPU in the future, you will need to upgrade your motherboard when upgrading to a 10000 series or later CPU.

The Ryzen 7 3700X can support PCI4 on x570 motherboards and is expected to be compatible with multiple CPU releases. The precision boost overdrive for overclocking needs a compatible motherboard to enable.

Memory overclocking versus core overclocking — PC-01

Contents

In the last part, we looked at how it is worth overclocking modern processors for everyday work, and got an increase on i9 9900k from 2 to 12% depending on the task increasing TDP from 95 to 145 watts.

And I ended the video by saying that in the tests I used rather mediocre memory sticks. They had an XMP profile at 3 GHz, not with super low timings, and at the same time I promised that we would see what is more important than overclocking memory or overclocking cores.

Of course, in reality, if you want to increase productivity, then you need to do both.

But “what will contribute more in the created conditions” is a big question.

The answer to this question will help us with a fresh set of memory 2 x 8 Gigabytes, which were provided to me by the Patriot company.

Two XMP profiles are stored in memory, at 4400 and at 4266 MHz.

In general, when choosing frequency bars for yourself, you should understand that not any processor can pull above 4 GHz from memory, and besides, the motherboard may not be able to cope with it. And 4400 can be a problem for all processors except for the last two ryzen lines, and even then with a divider for infinity factories, the ninth generation i9 from intel. as well as tenth generation Intel processors. In general, for this, there is a 4266 MHz profile on planks, which is easier to run on processors and motherboards.

Also, not all motherboards can provide stable signal transmission and automatic selection of sub-timings for high frequencies. I have ASUS maximus gene 11 in the test. But when buying frequency bars, you should also check the manufacturers’ websites to make sure that the memory manufacturer considers your board to be supported for this memory.

In general, just in case, I warned you that the frequency XMP profile is not a guarantee that it will work for you. But the frequency XMP profile is a guarantee that if other components of the system pull, then the memory will start at this frequency.

In the second part of the video, we’ll look at the gain from memory overclocking compared to a simple 3 GHz kit.

What causes memory overclocking?

But first, let’s figure out how to overclock memory in general, of course, except using the XMP profile.

This video is not going to be an overclocking guide. I don’t think I have enough experience in this to make guides. And in general, there are no secrets and secrets. More practical experience is described in the topic on the overclockers.ru forum.

But still, I will tell you the general essence and physics of the process itself.

We have globally three devices that are responsible for overclocking.

The first is the RAM itself.

The second is the memory controller, which in modern processors is built into the central processor itself.

In addition, there are connections between these devices through the motherboard.

And memory has two global parameters.

The first is the frequency with which the memory can work.

The second one is the speed of execution of the commands of the memory itself.

The frequency can be limited by all three components of the system, that is, the memory itself and the processor controller and not the ideal motherboard.

But the speed of command processing can be limited only by the memory itself.

Let me briefly describe how it all works so that you understand the essence of what we will do during overclocking.

What are memory timings, why are they needed and what are the limits for reducing them?

Imagine that you are RAM. The data itself is stored in huge racks. These racks have shelves. There are many different books on each shelf, there are pages in the books, and there are lines on those pages. Your job is to get information from your boss about what kind of data is needed, then determine in which rack, on which shelf, in which book and on which line this data is located. Then go to the right rack and open it, open the right shelf there, pull out the right book from this shelf, open the book on the right page, find the right line, read it, return to the boss and tell him what was written there. Well, or vice versa — the boss requires you to write down some information, you must write it down in a free space and log the location of this information, so that later, when you need to read this data, you can understand from this log where this data is recorded.

In general, everything is simple.

But the difficulty is that you do not have your own brain in order to do all the actions independently and smoothly. That is, you perform each task in stages only at the request of the boss. That is, you reach the rack, wait for the command to open this rack, open the rack, wait for the command to open the shelf, etc. In general, you are an employee.

But what’s more interesting is that even the boss doesn’t know whether you managed to complete the previous stage or didn’t.

That is, you might not have reached the required rack yet, and the boss will already tell you that you need to open a certain shelf. You, going to the rack, make movements in the air with your hands, as if you are opening a shelf on the rack, then when you come to the rack, you are given the command to open the book you need, you try to take the book through the closed shelf, etc. Naturally, in this case, writing or reading will fail.

In other words, for normal work, the boss needs to know in advance how long it takes you to go to the rack, open the shelf, etc. And when giving you commands, you need to time the time before issuing a new command so that you don’t stand idle for a long time and so that you have time to execute the previous command, that is, ideally, you should receive the next one almost instantly after executing the last command.

In general, memory overclocking consists in organizing the operation of the memory in such a way that all idle times between the issuance of memory commands are such as to minimize idle times.

RAM has an internal hierarchy that is essentially the same as in my example.

And the memory must be activated in turn on the way to the desired data, all these levels in turn one after another. And at each of the levels, activation takes some time for the passage of physical processes, mainly this is the accumulation of the required charge to the operating voltage values. That is, in my example, you physically walked, but in reality it is the accumulation of the necessary charge to working values. Because of which between the teams you need to retreat time periods.

And the time between certain commands is called timings.

True, these timings are indicated not in seconds, but rather in nanoseconds, but they are indicated in the number of cycles.

That is, let’s say. at a command frequency of 1 MHz, the “one” timing is 1 millionth of a second.

timing — “two” is two millionths of a second.

And let’s say at a frequency of 2 MHz the timing “one” is half a millionth of a second, and the timing two is one millionth of a second.

That is, at a frequency of 1 MHz, the timing of one is equal to the timing of two at a frequency of 2 MHz.

Actually, overclocking the memory without changing the voltage to the memory does not allow accelerating transients in the memory.

Therefore, with increasing frequency, you have to proportionally increase delays, that is, timings.

And, let’s say, if you picked up the minimum timings for a frequency of 2 GHz, then in an ideal world you can take a frequency of 4 GHz simply by doubling the timings.

But by increasing the frequency — we get two bonuses — the first bonus is that the memory, in fact, works in parallel with several banks and ranks, that is, it may not remove power from certain sections, so that some commands can be skipped when calls to recently involved elements, and here the theoretical possibility to transmit target information every cycle becomes more important. And if the frequency has doubled, then you can transmit target information twice as much. In an ideal world, of course, in practice — delays and a complex memory hierarchy do not allow this to be fully implemented.

And the second bonus is that we have reduced time sampling between adjacent timing values.

Let’s say if at a frequency of 1 MHz between timings 1 and 2 the difference is 1 millionth of a second, then at a frequency of 2 MHz the difference between timings 1 and 2 is half a millionth of a second.

And if the transient process actually took one and a half millionths of a second, then at a frequency of 1 MHz, timing — 2 will be needed, because it will not work with unity, while at 2 MHz — timing 3 will be needed, which will give the necessary one and a half milliseconds.

That is, due to the increase in the resolution of the timings, you can get closer to the minimum working delay time.

That is, to survive all the juices from the memory speed more efficiently.

In practice, of course, things are not so rosy. Memory, when approaching its maximum operating frequencies, ceases to be 100% responsive, and by the maximum frequency, real timings, expressed in nanoseconds, begin to increase, that is, an increase in timings to frequency ceases to be dependent.

And the task of overclocking is to find the frequency at which this dependence is still preserved and to fine-tune all the timings so that the memory does not idle more between commands than is necessary for transient processes to occur.

And, of course, transient processes can be accelerated.

Based on the nature of these processes — that is, the processes of charging and discharging — it is obvious that by increasing the supply voltage, these processes begin to proceed faster.

That is, by increasing the voltage, you can ensure that the memory starts working normally at lower timings at the same frequency.

The algorithm of actions that I recommend for memory overclocking

In general — summing up what needs to be done for overclocking.

The first is to initially select the voltage for the memory. The voltage depends on the memory heatsinks and your own limits on how much you are willing to throw.

I have memory with thick heatsinks and fins to increase the heat dissipation area, plus rather cold 20nm memory from Samsung. And for these strips, I chose a safe voltage of 1.52 Volts. Under which the memory will not warm up above 50 degrees outside the case. In a case, it would be somewhat higher, but in general — up to 60-65 degrees on chips — the memory does not begin to lose transient speed yet. But we must remember that as the temperature rises, there is a loss of stability, so on the bars for decent overclocking, radiators are needed not only for beauty. Here the radiators are quite efficient for voltages higher than recommended.

But I do not recommend setting the voltage that you want to get right away. So for example, during the overclocking process, I set 1.5 Volts, so that later I could slightly increase the voltage for stability.

If you have hot chips or thin heatsinks, then your voltage limit will be between 1.35 and 1.4 Volts on DDR4.

Next, the task is to select the main timings at any frequency, leaving the sub-timings at auto (at high memory frequencies, motherboards can set incorrect values to “auto”, so this method is for typical frequencies for your platform). It is clear that the closer the frequency is to the future target, the faster the entire overclocking will be completed. The selection of the main timings is a fairly simple task. Lower them one at a time until lowering each of them causes the test Mem program to fail. And gradually increase the frequency, changing the timings in proportion to the frequency. This can be calculated by proportions and manually, it is possible in iksel for example. Again — in the topic on ru overs there are links to excel files in the topic header, where there is a timings recalculator when changing the frequency. And so you increase the frequency while the linear increment of timings to the increase in frequency continues to work. As soon as the linear increment stops working, it means that you have reached the frequency at which the memory will perform best and it is on it that you should manually turn the rest of the timings and sub-timings.

Regarding intel. On processors of the 6th and 7th generation, it is necessary to set two additional voltages manually from the memory frequency of 3700-3800 MHz. This voltage is on the memory controller, it is also Vccio, that is, the thing that is responsible for transmitting memory commands and sending and receiving data, as well as voltage on the system agent (SA), this is an extra-core part of the processor, which includes, among other things and memory controller.

At frequencies below 4 GHz, these voltages usually will not exceed 1.2 Volts, and as a rule it happens a little higher than the stock 1.05 Volts, and they must be set manually so that motherboards do not raise these voltages to one and a half volts. In general, activating high-frequency XMP profiles is also worth looking at what motherboards throw at the agent and memory controller.

With ryzens — unfortunately, I don’t have much experience here, since the last processor I had was 2400 G, where the memory managed to greatly increase the performance of the built-in.

But that was a long time ago. See the thematic topics or other videos on YouTube for the realities of setting up boards for modern ryzens.

In addition, we must also remember that on ryzens from a frequency of 3800 MHz, a divider for infinity factories is switched on and in general — it will be necessary to select sub-timings at a frequency of 3800 MHz or, as they promise for 5 thousandths of a difference, 4 GHz.

On Intel, problems with the memory controller begin, depending on the generations and the success of a particular processor instance at frequencies from 4 to 4.5 GHz. My processor is not the most successful in terms of the controller and, for example, for 4.4 GHz I need a voltage of almost 1.3 Volts per controller, which is a bit much. It is strictly not recommended to set the voltages on these two components above 1.35 volts.

But in any case, the extremely low voltage of the controller and agent should be set after overclocking, that is, during overclocking — you need to set excessive values of these voltages in order to accurately limit overclocking not by the processor controller, but by the memory itself.

And, as for the test meme program, it loads the controller very weakly. That is, the lack of voltage on the controller and the agent cannot be reliably tested by this program.

As for sub-timings. The difficulty here is that these values are dependent on each other. That is, you cannot reduce them one by one in turn, like the main timings. It is necessary to apply a whole package of settings at once. That is to change a lot at once.

For ryzens, there is a ryzen DRAM calculator program, which already contains suitable configurations for different memory revisions, from which it will be possible to start overclocking, for Intel there are Excel sub-timing rhymes. Or you can just rummage around in the topic itself until you find screenshots of a person with a memory like yours and with basic timings similar to those that your memory could squeeze out. And just rip off the sub-timing values from someone else’s screenshot. Actually — a topic with screenshots on the ru over and the results — that’s what it’s for.

In this case, I personally remember the table of isotopes of chemical elements in which there is a so-called island of stability, for which the existence of new chemical elements is predicted.

So, using programs or tables for calculating sub-timings, your task is to get into this island of stability for your memory.

And as soon as you get into this island of stability, start reducing sub-timings manually by controlling the normal operation of memory not only by the test meme, but also using the memory speed test in AIDA64 and I also use the performance test in Win-rar, it is very sensitive to memory delays . In theory, the lower the sub-timings, the better. But in general, sometimes there are some conflicting combinations of sub-timings, since they are dependent on each other and the memory speed drops without losing stability.

In general, it is not necessary to change all sub-timings manually.

For starters, half of the sub-timings are waiting for switching between memory bars and between memory ranks. These are sub-timings with the letters DD and DR in the title.

Let’s say if you have one bar per channel and the bars themselves are single-ranked, then you can put anything into these sub-timings. You can at least zero, at least your favorite number. This will not affect the operation of the computer in any way. Naturally, you can leave it on the car.

And the process of memory overclocking is very pleasant on good boards, which do not get stupid when they hang, and when searching for the limit — blues, and stalling on computer initialization during reboots will be frequent guests.

Therefore, after each change, you need to do stability tests, and constantly save the current stable memory overclocking profile.

If there are no plans to get, so to speak, the last half percent of performance, then only these sub-timings should be changed to intel: tRRDL tRRDS tRFC tREFI tWR tRTP tFAW. At the same time, not all are dependent, so, for example, tRFC and tREFI (the only one in which “more is better”) can be changed as arbitrarily as the main timings, just until stability is maintained.

Also, if you’re using the same config file for the meme test as mine, cut tFAW right away in the first batch of settings. By default, motherboards at high frequencies set it to 50, and the operating values are always below 20. And reducing this value greatly reduces the run time of the meme test. It runs faster by 30 percent, which, on the scale of the entire memory overclocking, can save an hour of time, or even more.

Returning to the duration of overclocking: in the process of its implementation, you will find such values that there is almost stability, everything works, but there will be no more stability and errors, but otherwise everything works both in games and in programs. It is for this that I previously wrote that it is necessary to set the voltage slightly lower than the final one. 10-20 millivolts later will give you this missing stability and you won’t have to drop by one, including the main timings.

Well, the nice part of overclocking is that the heat dissipation of the system practically does not change, and the performance starts to increase.

Results

This is where we move on to the practical part of overclocking and look at the results.

Unfortunately, the 5.2 Adaptive Mod with offset and memory overclocking received in the last part became unstable at the same voltage, nevertheless, a denser load on the processor due to less downtime with fast memory affects the complexity of the processor. Of course, 5.2 can still be obtained, but at higher voltages and for the same performance with a large heat pack, which violates the logic of constant overclocking.

So we replay everything at 5.1 GHz. Naturally with the same heat pack of 145 watts.

That is, the system will differ from the drain by 50 watts, as in the last part.

It turns out there will be 4 systems.

The first is a stock processor, XMP memory profile at 3000 MHz.

The second system — overclocking processor — the same memory at 3000 MHz.

The third system — the processor is overclocked XMP memory profile at 4400 MHz on a new memory kit

And the fourth system — the processor is overclocked, the memory is at maximum overclocking, which was released for these brackets, and it came out at a frequency of 4266 MHz.

As for tests in games, there are some difficulties. I test games at maximum settings, but without anti-aliasing and at a reduced resolution, if necessary for processor tests, to get rid of the emphasis on the RTX 2070 graphics card. lowering the graphics settings and getting rid of the emphasis on the video card does not work even at a resolution of 1024×768 with half the resolution scale. There are also suspicions that in the game Shadow of the Tomb Raider, at some points, the system was also limited by the video card with memory overclocking.

Let’s take a look at the benchmarks before the games.

First, tests in AIDA64.

3000 MHz memory in stock processor.

Speed and read about 45000 MB/s, latency 48 nanoseconds.

With the overclocking of the processor, let me remind you, I also overclocked both the ring bus and the cache, which also speeds up the real speed of the memory.

Approximately 1000 MB/s has been added and memory latency has slightly decreased.

XMP profile at 4400 MHz on an overclocked processor is already under 60000 MB / s and the delays have dropped to 43 ns.

Well, the last profile — with manual overclocking at a frequency of 4266 MHz with the selection of some sub-timings.

About 3 thousand more MB/s added, latency dropped below 40 ns.

Win-rar.

His benchmark is very fond of low memory latencies.

Overclocking the processor gave an increase of about 5%.

Changing the memory from 3 to 4.4 GHz gave another 1.5% growth.

Manual selection of sub-timings and timings at a frequency of 4266 MHz memory allowed to increase performance in comparison with the drain by almost 20%.

A logical question arises — why is there such a weak gain from changing the memory and such a large increase from the selection of sub-timings, and even at a lower memory frequency.

There are several reasons for this.

First of all, manual memory overclocking allows you to get the memory potential better.

And the reason for the low gain from changing the memory is that I had to greatly increase the power consumption of the processor due to the high voltages on the agent and the memory controller. And, let me remind you that we overclocked the processor by significantly limiting its TDP, in general, this was the point of the video about constant overclocking. That is, part of the limited TDP was eaten away by the memory controller, and, of course, with faster memory, the processor at the same frequency begins to consume more energy due to the reduction in processor idle waiting for data — in fact, which is the reason for the performance increase.

At the same time, my processor with 4266 MHz memory can work on voltage to the controller almost like a drain, and at 4400 at already high voltages. In general, the reason here is not in the memory as such, but in the TDP limited by the conditions of the tests, and the fact that this TDP selects the controller in the processor.

For example, 3D Mark TS was more indicative. And, by the way, in this this benchmark also shows that although it simulates a game load, it is still far from real tasks.

In the CPU test, after changing the memory to a more efficient one with the XMP profile at 4400 MHz, the performance dropped altogether.

In traditional overclocking with frequency fixing, of course, there will be no such effect. But now we have such conditions.

With manual memory overclocking, compared to stock, I got an increase of 13%.

Game results

I’ve written before that there is uncertainty about Shadow of the Tomb Raider. But even with possible time constraints in the video card, simply overclocking the processor gave an increase of about 6%, and overclocking both cores and memory gave an increase of 18%.

Number of rendered frames in benchmark

And here, even with a 40% increase in processor TDP, an 18% increase in performance is already a decent result.

Let’s consider other games in more detail.

World War Z. Just overclocking the cores gave an increase of about 6%. Overclocking with changing memory to a fast one increased the gain to almost 9%.

And manual overclocking of the memory already leads to an increase from the drain by a little more than 19.5%.

Here you should pay close attention to the frame time graph.

It can be seen that despite the fact that synchronization is disabled, frames are output with discrete time, which could also affect the results, that is, a simple memory change did not allow jumping to a lower frame time level quite often, but manual overclocking did.

This is the reason for such a non-linear change in performance from additional memory overclocking.

If you look at the frame time distribution graphs, you can also see steps that are unnatural for this graph.

Let me remind you that this graph shows how often what duration frames occur in the test.

Well, the same — many people like values less than 1 or 5% (they are also 99%, 95%).

In this graph, you can get any values for any of these percentiles, and 50% is the median.

But here, due to the peculiarities of the game, these graphs are somewhat incapable of reflecting reality.

And the last game in the test is Far Cry 5.

Simply overclocking the processor allowed us to get about +3.5% gain, changing the memory increased this gain to just over 8%, and manually overclocking the memory allowed us to increase this figure to almost 16, 5%.

The distribution graph here shows that in general, for most of the instant FPS values, changing memory to the one with a 4400 MHz profile made it possible to achieve an increase comparable to overclocking the cores, and only in the high FPS area — memory overclocking has a greater impact than overclocking the nuclei.

Manual overclocking of memory — allowed to achieve a significant increase in performance compared to other tests.

Results

First of all, it is natural to drive everything during acceleration.

But memory overclocking is more harmless in terms of system energy efficiency.

In the last part — by increasing the power consumption of the system, I got an increase from 2 to 12%, depending on the task.

Now, overclocking both memory and cores, with the same increase in consumption by 50%, a performance increase of 10 to 20%, depending on the task.

Well, in general, given that a 50% increase in heat dissipation is not a plus of 200-300 watts to the entire system, but plus 50 watts, an increase of 10-20% looks quite effective and, in terms of energy efficiency, memory overclocking is certainly significant is more preferable than core overclocking, and in terms of absolute growth, core and memory overclocking on the i9 9900k turned out to be approximately equivalent and in some tasks overclocking of the cores had a greater effect, and in others, in particular in games, memory overclocking. If we talk only about games, then of course, in reality, when processors leave the factory with almost no overclocking option, and even with a large number of cores in just two memory channels, memory overclocking plays a greater role than core overclocking.

In general, if we talk about stock DDR4 sticks, the overclocked sticks reached the speed of 4-channel memory on just two channels. 16 core ryzens partially saves a large cache, if we talk about two memory channels, but still, for 16 cores on ryzen and 8 or 10 in intel — two memory channels are very small. Hence the 20% increase in some tasks.

Well, in this test there were strips with chips from Samsung B-Die. These are the best DDR4 memory chips. And here I propose to raise the question — how much one B-Die can differ from another. For example, in my motherboard there are settings presets for B-Die, there are settings in the Ryzen DRAM calculator for B-Die. But nothing of this ready-made fit for me personally. Now I have 3 sets of bi-daily single-rank memory 2 modules of 8 gigs.

And I will say that this patriot set is much better than my first set.

And I also have a third set, which I recently bought.

XMP profile of the third set of B-Die memory

In general, it is possible to find out how high the B-Die spread is, which I will show in one of the future articles.

Benchmarks AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 4.

4GHz vs Intel Core i9-9900K 5.2GHz review, description, reviews, specs

Expanding on all the tests we did in our first 3rd gen Ryzen review, today we will do a comparison test. IPC stands for «instructions per cycle» and can be a good indicator of the efficiency of a processor architecture.

Traditionally, Intel Coffee Lake processors offer high IPC combined with high operating frequency, and this is the best combination for maximum performance.
While AMD is still behind when it comes to frequency, they seem to have shut down and may have topped Intel IPC performance with this latest update.

Pre-Testing

To see how far AMD has come here, we’re going to neutralize as many variables as we can while still making things as realistic as possible.
The first and most obvious step is to remove the core frequency from the equation, and for this we have locked all the processor cores at 4 GHz. Any type of boost technology has been disabled, meaning cores cannot exceed 4GHz and all cores run at 4GHz.
Then, for the Ryzen 9 3900X, we disabled two cores in each chipset, moving it from 12-core to 8-core. All tested processors will have 8 active cores, but where the 3700X has them all in one die, 3900X distributes cores across two dies (two 4-core chipsets).
Ryzen 3rd generation processors were tested on Gigabyte X570 Aorus Xtreme using AGESA 1.0.0.3AB BIOS revision, Ryzen 1st and 2nd generation were tested on Asus ROG Crosshair 7 Hero, and Coffee Lake processors on Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra.
All configurations used the same G.Skill FlareX DDR4-3200 memory using the xtreme memory profile and the same MSI GTX 2080 Ti graphics card.
A small disclaimer we’d like to add for this kind of article: we’re testing purely for the science of it, and this is not buying advice.
Coffee Lake processors certainly have a clock speed advantage, but that doesn’t necessarily make them the best choice. For actual performance, please refer to our recent Ryzen 9 3900X, 3700X and R5 3600 reviews. You can find out more about these numbers.
In multi-core Cinebench R20 processors, the 3900X and 3700X delivered roughly the same performance, making them about 14% faster than the 9900K at clock-matching. What’s more, they were 18% faster than previous 2700X generations. This is a significant improvement in IPC performance.
In single-core performance testing, there is a 13% performance increase for 3rd generation Ryzen parts compared to 2700X. They were also 9% faster than 9900K, which is pretty good for these new processors.
The dual-chip design of the 3900X improved performance in the V-Ray test by 2% over the 3700X, which is not a significant difference, but it was significantly faster in this test. This meant that when matched at the same clock speed, the 3900X was 6 % faster than the Intel i9-9900K and 13% faster than the 2700X.
Using the Corona test, this time the 3900X was 3% faster than the 3700X. The 3900X was also 5% faster than the 9900K and 16% faster than 2700X. Now let’s see how things look in a few games.

Gaming Benchmarks

The first game we’re testing is Battlefield V. Despite a significant drop in clock speed, the Core i9-9900K still manages to take first place. The 1% low performance was very impressive, and here the 9900K was 9% faster than 3rd gen Ryzen processors.

Looking at the average frame rate, we can see that the 3700X was 8% faster than the 2700X, and 3900X was 13% faster. This means that even at the same clock speed and the same number of cores, the 3900X is still 5% faster than the 3700X, which is very interesting. The
9900K also takes first place in Far Cry New Dawn, beating the 3900X by 5% headroom in average framerate and 10% headroom in the low 1%. This is when operating at a frequency lower than out of the box.
It’s not like AMD didn’t make a noticeable leap: the 3900X was 20% faster than the 2700X, while the 3700X offered a 16% performance boost.
Even at 1080p with the RTX 2080 Ti, Total War: Three Kingdoms is mostly GPU bound. We can still see some improvement in results up to 1%, and again Intel comes out on top.
World War Z has received an update that significantly improves performance. The Ryzen processors perform significantly better in this update, with the 3900X now able to roughly match the 9900K in our IPC test.
The dual 3900X chipset was again slightly faster than the single 3700X chipset, offering a 4% increase in average frame rates. 39The 00X was 14% faster than the 2700X and the 3700X was 9% faster.

Memory and more

What we found when we first tested the Ryzen 7 3700X was much lower than expected memory write bandwidth. After discussing this with AMD, they explained that they had made a compromise here, since client workloads barely write.
Instead of using that space to improve things they didn’t need, they invested in silicon real estate in more profitable ways to improve performance.
The end result is that the Core Complex Die to IO Die reference for memory reading is 32 bytes wide, but for writing it is only 16 bytes, which is why peak write throughput is effectively halved. However, since the 3900X has two CCDs, it has two 16-byte wide lanes for writing, and this allows it to reach a maximum throughput of up to about 50 GB / s.
Moving on to cache bandwidth, we can see that the 3700X and 3900X are nearly identical, and both offer significant gains in L1, L2, and L3 throughput over the second generation 2700X. L3 cache bandwidth has been increased from about 40% to 50% since 3rd gen Ryzen.
We also see a 30% improvement in L2 throughput and an almost 100% increase in L1 throughput. This is an incredible performance boost and explains why we saw 100% performance gains in applications like WinRAR.
As far as memory latency, little has changed. Anyway, we have seen an increase in memory latency compared to the 2nd gen Ryzen, and we can see this by looking at latency in the DRAM and L3 caches.
